- In this video, Doctor Andrea Furlan explains that there is a relationship between food that we eat and pain. Chronic inflammation may lead to chronic pain, and there are nutrients in our Western diet that predispose to more inflammation. People with autoimmune diseases are prone to more inflammation because their immune system is attacking their own cells using inflammation. We don’t know if fibromyalgia is an autoimmune disease or not, but people with fibromyalgia have more inflammatory markers than people without fibromyalgia.
Changing their diet has a great impact on chronic inflammation. Doctor Furlan explains strategies to change eating habits and how to incorporate an anti-inflammatory diet:

👆ABOUT CANOLA OIL --> I always do thorough research before publishing my videos. I am very serious about what I recommend in my channel. I only look at reputable sources of information. Here are the findings from my research about Canola Oil.
Harvard University www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/2015/04/13/ask-the-expert-concerns-about-canola-oil/
Oklahoma State University: canola.okstate.edu/canola-info/canolaoilmeal/canolaoilmythsdebunked.pdf
Mayo Clinic: www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/expert-answers/canola-oil/faq-20058235
And by the way, at my home, I use canola oil and extra virgin olive oil. That is why I recommended those two in my video.
after reading the Harvard article, I think I reached a different conclusion and will have to respectfully disagree here. I don't want any oil in my body that has been "refined, bleached and deodorized" or that contains hexane (even at small doses) these seed oils are completely foreign to our body and are arguably a major cause of many of our modern day diseases. Polyunsaturated fats are highly unstable when heated and cause havoc throughout our body. I have psoriatic arthritis and since cutting seed oils from my diet along with other changes (fasting) I am now pain free and off of my methotrexate, I still have small skin lesions but they are manageable. I will leave this article for your perusal. I hope you consider a new conclusion. Thanks. chriskresser.com/how-industrial-seed-oils-are-making-us-sick/
There's so much mixed information put out. You can't believe everything you read. I believe that the expeller pressed Canola oil is a better alternative because of the way it's extracted without using chemicals...

A good rule is shop the outer perimeter of the grocery store - not the aisles. The outer perimeter is usually where the fresh meat, fruit and veggies are.
And frozen food. I’ve cream extravaganza. Woohooo!
I love that idea Patricia!
If I can’t eat the majority of vegetables cuz of their taste, is there a substitute for them? Somehow I’ve never been able to eat the majority of them cuz I always gag on them. Can’t do anything about it. I’ve tried salad dressings and none of them taste good to me.
No beans, rice, or pasta? That's something that I personally would not want to go without. Also, nuts and seeds tend to be in the center aisles as well and they are very healthy.
@@vidfreak727 do u like butter? My 17 yr old totally loves it in the brocolli in a bag -nuke 2-3 min & today we had green beans in a bag & cauliflower florets I chopped, nuke 5 min too. Read easy instructions on bag or RUclips.carrot bites tastes great with butter + seasoning too

For #5 everything is correct except for the canola oil. It is HIGHLY processed. If you are going to use canola oil, make sure it is expeller pressed, it's much less inflammatory. Also I would stay away from drinking fresh squeezed orange juice. You're losing all the fiber by not eating it, and you are just left with sugar water. I would recommend blending the whole orange into a smoothie with low glycemic berries.

This is exactly what brought me here, the lupus has started causing severe inflammation as well as affecting my kidneys 😫, i want to change my diet and lifestyle before this gets any worse, as of now my GFR is 88% but i have a high amount of protein in my urine, so i am looking for a diet to #1 possibly by intermittent fasting i may be able to correct this autoimmune disease and save my kidneys, and #2 eat a healthy dose of plant based, whole foods so that i can live a longer healthier life, i don't want to die early, i think of my only child and how much pain that would cause him. So I'm trying to do whatever it takes to live a healthier life and eat to live, not live to eat, i want my food to be my medicine
I cut out packaged snacks and cut back on 90% of my dairy consumption. The effect was almost immediate, that is to say within a few days there was noticeable improvement. After two weeks my joints felt 20 years younger (I'm 59). Swollen knees, ankles and toes completely gone. I am fit but it was hard to stay fit when it hurts to walk. I still put cheese on a cheese burger, I still put cream in my coffee with some stevia but no more ice cream (I was a self proclaimed ice cream addict), no more milk in my smoothies. This made a huge difference. FYI, I use cashew milk and green tea in my smoothies now.
Hi. Do no diary??
How long did it take to lose 20 pounds? I know it’s different for everyone cuz of possible medical reasons, so just tell me how long it took you. Thank you
Worth trying.
Sounds like you're making good progress. Have you thought of trying unhomogenised jersey cows m ilk, which is A2 casein and much better than standard A1 casein cows milk? Also sheep, goat and buffalo products are all A2 casein. Much better!
Ice cream is my bad too. I found several substitutes but they are either made from coconut milk (high cholesterol) and contain sugar(inflammatory). I drove myself crazy trying different substitute ice creams. My hubby said it’s ok to have ice cream at the farm stand every once in a while which I do. Ironically, it doesn’t bother me and it’s probably the stress from worrying about the after effect of it’s effects did more harm than the ice cream itself. As my husband says everything in moderation. I think he’s onto something.

All cooked foods are inflammatory. The cooking process makes them acidic. To cure acidosis which is what diseases are, you must eat raw, specifically 100% raw fruit diet. I am arthritis and psoriasis free after switching to a 100% raw fruit diet 3 years ago. So called diseases by the dumb western medicine system deems incurable. The key for me was omitting tomatoes. Zero pain, but miss them. Big discovery: heirloom tomatoes do NOT result in arthritic pain! So the inflammation results for growing chemicals in soil and sprays.
Would that mean that organic tomatoes would be safe to eat?
Barbara,
Do you mean heirloom tomatoes only? In other words not all the hybrid types?
Or do you mean organically grown?
As these are two different situations.
Based on these two differences, the best would be to look for heirloom tomatoes ( all original tomatoes that are not hybridized) which are grown organically (not sprayed with pesticides nor herbicides nor even rodenticides).
Thank you.
wow! I eat so many tomatoes. I had no idea!
Removing the tomato skins and seeds with that clear pulp around them rids the antiinflammatory properties of tomatoes. I use more diced canned tomatoes when making dishes to eliminate need for sauce and often there are very few seeds in them from processing but with fresh tomatoes, I dip them in scalding water, removing the skin then slice up and push out the seeds and clear pulp and just use the meaty parts of the tomatoes.Something called lignums in the other parts cause the inflammation so cutting them out helps.
wow, this makes me sad. 😢

Turmeric is a great anti-inflammatory spice, you can use it in cooking.
Yes, have you seen my video about Turmeric?
With turmeric being fat soluble, you would need to heat it up with oil (best would be coconut oil). Also, you need to add black pepper to activate the curcumin (the chemical in turmeric). The most beneficial way to reap the rewards of turmeric is to make 'Golden Milk'. There's recipes everywhere. Very simple and you can make a paste and store it in the refrigerator for appx 5-7 days and make fresh Golden milk daily. It's made with coconut oil and turmeric in a pan on low heat, stir until it forms a paste. Let cool and store in a glass jar. When ready to make Golden milk, add almond milk (some use oat milk) to the paste, with black pepper, and you can add other spices like cinnamon, etc., for flavor. Vanilla almond milk makes it sweeter.
@@GenXer333 Yes. I always cook it with oil and black pepper and other herbs and spices. It really does work when it comes to inflammation.

Gostei muito dessa aula sobre educação alimentar pena que poucos seguem na íntegra. Meus parabéns a você doutora vou tentar adotar essa dieta.
Obrigada Altamiro
@@DrAndreaFurlan I watched your video on the ,anti-inflammatory' diet and was absolutely thrilled to see that this is the diet l have been following for many years
Some would call it the Mediterranean Diet. I live in Spain where people are very conscious about selecting the right foods for good health. Despite this, however, l still suffer from arthrosis and bursitis - may have to have a hip replacement soon. But l think l would be much worse off without my healthy diet, so l was so pleased to see that it coincides with yours. Thank you, Dr Andrea!!
Dear Dr, I always learnt a lot of things from your video. They are very useful to me as I'm an osteoarthritic patient. I had a partial knee replacement last year when I was 51. Watching your videos on exercises and diet had made a turning point in me on managing the pain. I adopted the new lifestyles. Thank you so much dr. You're really great!

Change 1 thing at a time. Just replace sugar with home made juices blueberries, cook yourself at home. Is it in the natural you would find it in nature. Use healthy things!
How did the partial knee work out for you
@@patcampbell2664 Ya, thanks.
I’m 62 and started a big garden this year but I messed myself up I knew I had arthritis but man I damaged myself so I’ve decided to retire as a nurse I’ll learn more from an orthopedic dr Friday but I still having a hard time getting around I feel like I went from a teenager to a senior citizen in one day I haven’t been back to work in a month!!!

Very very good information thank-you so much
Dr.Furlan . I would like to say this video was very informative. My sister was diagnosed with Sjogrens disease and fybermalga at this time I’m trying to take a holistic approach on foods that are beneficial for her disease. I surely agree with you when it comes to bread gluten and sugar are the number one food items that’s may bring inflammation . I believe at this point my sister should do vegetables, and Fish because of the omega and almond milk and stay clear of all dairy . Thanks again for food education on inflammatory foods .
I too have sjogrens and fibromyalgia. I also have EDS and rheumatoid arthritis. I tried a gluten free diet for months. It didn’t change my blood results or how I felt. Great if it works, but its not for everyone
Thanks a lot for the important information .
Welcome!
Cảm ơn bác sĩ

Can u plz advice the good and bad foods for patients with chronic fissures ? Appreciate.
Thank you for your comment and suggestion. This topic is outside of the scope of this youtube channel. In my channel I talk about issues of chronic pain, diagnoses, causes, treatment and exercises for chronic pain.
I have been saying you are what you eat since the late sixties. It's way easier said then done. When you get a craving for junk food, but you haven't bought any, it's a lot easier.✌🤙🌴
Yes! Thank you!
Yes...but this junk food is available al the time...I have nonstop stores near me..:(
Obrigada pelo vídeo Dr. Andrea! Gostei
