I was ringside for this fight in 1986. Rhome was a hell of a fighter. I have been practicing karate since 1973 and Rhome threw that last right hand more like a reverse punch we would throw in class rather than a boxer's right cross. They were right above me when that last shot landed and contrary to what the commentator said, Hefton hit the mat HARD... almost like taking a second hit. You could hear it across the room. I was also there in 1977 when Rhome fought Ross Scott at the Omni in Atlanta. An incredible slugfest that Rhome lost because he just got tired of hitting Scott. He looked good in that one too. It's worth looking up on RUclips.
Jerry Rhome weathered the storm that so many people succumb to When bad Brad Hefton got them in the corner. I have to admit Jerry was a better fighter that day for sure. But I have to tip my hat to Brad he didn't let that loss Define him he went on and fought great fights afterwards.
I think of this match as sort of a sequel to Rhome's '77 fight with Ross Scott. It plays out similarly, and with Hefton sort of being the Ross Scott of this particular era, it could've easily ended the same way.
Thank You for the video! With 2 legends))
Our pleasure!
