Here in California, around 2010, I went to a Porsche dealership just to see a new GT3 and im just wearing a polo shirt and pants and driving a 95 civic. One of the sales asked me if I want a Porsche 911 and I said Of course, but told him I cant afford it, and he said do you want to drive one, and I said yes but im just here to see a GT3 and he said No worries. He asked for my drivers license and he went to their storage along the dealership and 5 mins later he brought an old 2007 GT3 and he let test drive the car. After the test drive, still told him I cant afford the a porsche and he said “its ok, at least you have experience to drive a Porsche” and up to now, still cant forget the power and its rawness of a GT3.
What a good salesman! I got told I was too young to test drive an Audi S8 (used) when I really wanted to buy it and drove an hour and a half to see that exact one! Only 1 of 3 for sale "near" me and they knew I was coming far
I had a similar experience though I came in driving my Camaro and it was a 911 GTS I got to take out. I still have that salesman's card and its been years later.
The Mercedes dealer used to look at me like I was cluttering up the showroom, so I was surprised that when I switched to BMW, they treat me like royalty and let me (encourage me) to test drive anything and everything, as well as inviting me to every VIP event / unveiling / product launch. Yes I know its just good sales practice and they just want to get more money out of me, but it's nice to be treated like you matter to them, rather than you are not good enough to drive their cars.
I had a same experience with my dad when he was looking for new SUV. First we went to BMW dealership where we basically got full review form the salesman about their cars and they literally bagged us to test drive some of the cars that we had in mind. After that we went to other brands dealership and then we went to Mercedes. When we showed up, no one really wanted to talk to us so we basically started looking at cars on our own. After like 10 minutes car salesman finally came up to us. He showed us around and when we asked if we could test drive it, he started doing BS things like that first we have to configure car and then he's gonna need us to fill out some sort of personal form. Well at the end, he got to test drive the car next week, but over all experience was worst that I have ever experienced.
It varies by the dealership. I've heard people complain about not being allowed to test drive a 370Z at the nissan dealership and being surprised how easy it is to test drive a benz (or a BMW or a Porsche).
Local Benz dealer saw me pull up in my Fiat 500 Abarth, tshirt, jeans, didn't notice the $300 shoes and $2400 watch I guess, I wanted to look at the new SL Roadster, she told me that didn't look like it was in my price range, and brought me to look at C-Classes and a freakin SMART car. I walked next door to the Ford dealership and bought a 350R off the showroom floor that day.
Both mercedes and bmw near me are bad. I test drove a used 335 and had the worst experience. I get it its not a new car but still, first i got put on a waiting list that involved other customers walking in after me and being helped first because they were older and taken more seriously. Like 30 minutes later im finally being helped by some snooty bitch in high heels. Who wouldn’t let me drive the car i wanted to because it was a manual and thought i would burn the clutch..so i had to test drive an automatic instead. And about halfway through the test drive she doubts im even buying the car and tells me to go back to the dealer. When i get to the lot she makes me repark it like 6 times because it was parked “too close” to the m3. By this time i was already pissed off and basically got out of the car and explained how that was the worst fucking customer service ive ever experienced and then i left and bought a manual 335 at a cadillac dealership who treated me the same as all their other customers

What it all boils down to is this: You don't have the spending power? Don't bother. As such you will never see me walk into an exotic dealership for a test drive. I'll visit them just to look though, and if you are respectful they have no problem with that at all.
You know, I would just love to arrive to admire the cars with my ambitious son. I'll even buy an expensive shirt for the priveledge of viewing these pieces of art. I even did it once as a very young man, but today I would just feel stupid. I drive a V6 Mustang, which is a complete joke of a car compared to even modern V8 Mustangs, let alone exotics. But I am thankful to have even I do. There are many who don't have what I have.
Im deff. to poor and deff dont know anyone..... Hell i couldnt even sit in a NSX when my friend and i went to the dealership to drop on his off to get maint. done..... Luckily he has let me sit in his tho so ya thats was nice of him.....
You can pay to drive them on special track days for not very much. I drove a Ferrari, Lambo and a Nissan GTR for a few laps each and it only cost like £100.
I'm not spending 3k on a rental if i'm planning on buying a high end car for 250k +. Basically don't be an ass when looking to buy a car. If the dealer is blowing you off, go find a different dealer.
Joe L well it's obvious you don't have the 3k to even spend on an exotic car rental. 3k is barely a drop in the bucket to most of the people who own these cars.
@@chevyon37s 3k is a nice little bit of money and while I do agree that it is a stupid thought process, in the grand scheme of things 3k is not a lot ..
You obviously did not watch the video, he explains exactly why. Or better yet I’m betting if you rented the car from rob and walked into that dealership the next day and said I want that car the will pay the rental fee for you or make a deal with rob.
Flip side of my F150 comment below, in 2012 I was waiting for the launch of the Focus ST in the US. The day my local dealer got one, I called to schedule a test drive and told them I was very interested. I wanted to make sure it was as much fun as advertised but I was basically sold. I arrive at the dealership and meet the sales guy (I'm 25 at the time he's in his 50's) he looks at me and says oh I'm busy I'll find someone else to help you. He clearly thought i was just there to mess around. He gives me to the new guy, I drive the car and love it. Sit down to work out details and my original sales guy who blew me off is finding out that the customer he blew me off for has bad credit and they can't finance him for a truck. My guy asks how many months I want to finance it for and I say loud enough for the other sales guy to hear 0, I'll trade in my paid off car and write a check for the difference. I'd worked hard, saved up and it's a Ford not a Ferarri. Original guy probably should have just taken me for the test drive lol.
This is why I like Rob. He's not a "RUclipsr" by trade, he's a tried and true businessman and knows his way around the luxury lifestyle much better than a lot of these supercar "youtubers"
I test drove an F10 M5 wearing gym clothes because I know cars and was legit serious about buying one in 12-18 months. I even told them there's no way I was buying it that day and was going to wait until they depreciated another $15-20k. It's not hard as long as you're genuine about it.
100% about attitude, not clothing. I dress well everyday, but it has been 95-100 here lately, not wearing a dress shirt and slacks to go test a car or 2 and any smart salesman gets that.
A trick I have used to be able to test some pretty new exotics..............I look at the car, then tell the salesman I would like to speak with their finance person if I could, just to make sure I can qualify for some sort of reasonable financing, before I get serious looking at the car. They always do. Work out a couple scenarios with their finance person. I always get to drive the car, and they don't treat you like a slub, because you don't wear a suit to go car shopping.
Good advice. I walked into my local Ferrari dealer last year looking at either a 911 Turbo or the California. I was shocked they let me just take them out to test drive. I ended up buying an LC500. I came back this year, spoke to the same salesman, gave him a budget I was looking at and a specific used Ferrari they had on the lot. I ended up buying a different car than I came in for. Same type, an F430, but a Spider and in Rosso Corsa rather than the white one. I told them I didn't even want to look at anything outside my budget. I had no problems, but I'm 52 years old and I assume they knew I was legit.
This is a GREAT video, and I'm glad you made it. As someone who works in automotive sales, what you are saying is spot on! Let me add something, aside from not bullshitting (which is VERY important), make an APPOINTMENT! But, make one during slow/quiet times. Early Saturday and Sunday morning is a bad time, as salespeople are usually delivering cars that customers have already purchased. However, any time after 1pm or 2pm on the weekends (particularly Sunday) is good. Why? Salespeople are usually bored out of their minds, and they'll fall over themselves to help you! LOL
Laws in my state means the dealer isn't open Sunday. I used to work a 10-7 shift as well, so no, appointments were not happening my man. Just switched 8-4:30 though, so it's all good now.
Very sage advice, sir - as someone in the business, it is very easy for professionals to sniff out dreamers or folks that just want to mile up cars with no intention to buy... kind of ruins things a little bit for the actual buying public at times. If you're a buyer, it will be evident very early on in the interaction. Be cool, respect is a two-way street and it isn't difficult to earn quickly as long as you're genuine as Rob says.
This is true. When I was looking for my 996.2 ( between yrs 02-04) I was very specific as to wanting it in grey or silver and must be a manual, hardtop only, must have black interior. The local Porsche dealership here in New Orleans didnt have any used 996.2s in stock but tried to get me into a nice used Cayman for about the same pricerange I was looking for the 996.2. Although I told them no thanks I rather the 911 996 they still wanted me to go for a test ride anyways. Needless to say I still didnt drive a Cayman and eventually found my 996.2 in Dallas on a business trip. But like you said. If you goto a dealership looking fpr a specific model with specific specs then the dealer will most likely let you test drive a car or two to make the sale or perswade you into something slighly differe r
I have never taken a Ferrari for a test drive but I have driven Ferraris. But you can walk into many high end dealerships and get test drives. Many dealers who sell exotics in the 100-200k range will let you test drive cars if you are straight forward, and are kind to them. Way before I had enough money to buy my first Porsche I walked into my local Porsche dealer and was just eyeballing a few cars, I kept coming in every few months (my car was being serviced or washed at one of the other dealerships on the lot) he offered to let me take one out for a spin, I took out a 911 targa, almost every time I came in if he was free he would offer to let me take something out for a few minutes to drive. 4 years later I decided to pick up a Porsche and guess who I went to. They are not always looking for the quick sale very often they will build a relationship with people in order to make a sale years down the line. Most of the time these sales reps don't have customers flowing through so they have some spare time, and my dealer easily has over a hundred new Porsches on the lot, and for the most part adding 5-10 miles onto them won't do anything to their value. Its all about how you behave like you said, but dealers will let you test drive if you are nice.
The more your down payment is..the less your monthly payment is. Learn your cars very well. Figure out what you want. Also suggest not buying an exotic until you can afford two of them
GuillotineStare most of em maybe but he's talking about the salesmen at exotic dealerships I'm sure those dealerships don't hire people they'd consider non proffesional to sell cars to highly successful people
I remember when Rob used to drive the cars instead of talking about test driving, yes the good ol days back before he had his license revoked, I guess podcasts are what this channel has come too now
I've seen high end car dealerships that usually have one demo car that they use for test drives to make sales they don't sell the demo car until it's out of date and served its purpose then they sell it for a lower price usually
I had to pause the vid and comment, you should never fill out a credit app just to fake it to get the test drive, that's a hit at your report and score, and some dealers might run it more than once meaning you're tagged for each individual inquiry. Better option, if they offer refundable deposit put a decent one on a credit card, afterwards get the refund, and since it's CC any issues and you can run a claim with the CC company.
“Hello guys here I am looking really sharp thanks to Peter manning but am I comfortable? No that’s why I changed right before the video. Thanks Peter manning”
Bought my first S-Class without test driving it, but to be honest that's mainly because I had driven other friend's cars so I knew the car anyway. I've never had a problem getting to drive any car ever to be honest. Porsche was the coolest car dealership though, I went to look at a Cayman S and the salesman was cool as hell, basically forced me to test drive a 911. Worst dealers at GM dealers, they've blown maybe 80% of potential sales of cars I was interested in buying from them.
I remember being borderline forced into a BMW M235i because i was interested in a BMW M140i.. it was a sales tactic to give me a feel of the car and experience the engine and gearbox to seal the deal and put an order down. It almost worked.
Very true advice dropped in here. On the other hand, when I walked into a Porsche dealership to ask about details of the Boxster, they didnt mind at all to give me the Car catalogue which looked quite expensive and nice. Today I might not afford it, tmr I may. In fact yes I can now. And I’ll remember that experience. In fact I actually did think of renting one for a weekend. It’s a little present I can give to myself.
Bought an F150 last month over the phone, not a Raptor but still a nice truck. Drove 2.5hrs to pick it up because it was spec'd the way I wanted and price was right. Never test drove one before getting it, it wasn't necessary. Driving it around the block for 10 mins wasn't going to be representative of 200k miles of ownership. I did all my shopping over the phone/email, I was clearly very serious about buying and the lack of interest from some sales folks actually surprised me.
also a smart salesperson is gonna run your credit the moment they get a hold of your drivers license before test drive, if your credit don't check out, they're gonna tell you go fish or they don't have the keys
My dad bought a second hand Toyota Landcruiser from a interstate (we live in Australia BTW), The guy said to him "do you want a test drive?", my dad responded with "the test drive will be the 500 kilometer drive home!".
That Mustang with the chameleon paint... are we talking around 2003 era? changes from purple to blue to kinda green-ish? Seat and steering wheel inserts too?
What ticks me off is like when I was 21, going to buy first "new" car and nobody would even let me test drive saying I had to be 25 to test drive. I'm just talking about like 30-45k$ cars.
bigbenisdaman shoulda gone to a different dealership. I bought a new Wrangler at 19 ( not smart but it did hold value well) and they didn’t hesitate to let me test drive it. Chrysler salesman try a little harder than most though in general.
When I was like 10 years old, my dad and I walked into a Jaguar dealership. He was in the market for a high-end car, and Jaguar was an option for him. The salesman at the dealership were so rude we just walked out Ended up buying a Mercedes.
Dont judge the customer by their clothing. Came into the Jaguar dealer wearing an old t-shirt, jeans and a hoodie a bit tired from my gig last night. Sales person looked at me like I was scum. All the other suited up customers looked at me as trash. You should have seen their jaws dropped when the customer relation manager at the service department came out and said: Sir, your car is ready serviced...
I was about to buy a new F150 but I canceled when i saw it had 304 miles. They tried to discount it but I wanted my first new car to have less than 10 miles.
It all boils down to being able to actually afford the car. They will strain you through many questions before the test drive. Get your dough up and then you may eventually shape it into a new luxury vehicle. Thanks Mr. Spaghetti!
Well, I went in to a dealership with my 21 year old son, once they found out he worked for a major hedge fund company they literally threw the keys of a 488 at him. He didn’t buy it as he obviously he didn’t have the money (9 years later he does } but I walked out with a 3 year old Maserati I still have to this day. Be legitimate you’ll get a test drive.
I did all of the things you said when I was trying to buy my Challenger Scat Pack Widebody. I wanted to buy it then and there with the attitude to match. They wanted to run my credit before a test drive and I immediately walked out.
I hate doing hard inquiries. I don't trust too many folks unless I know I am going to buy it. I will have to be able to look at the particular car I got fully test drives could be last I'm not worrying about that but I'm trying to make sure that I am buying a quality product before I go through a hard inquiry.
What a great video. I'm a newbie entering the Ferrari market and this video was excellent advice, Rob. Thanks for helping me not look like a horse's ass. Two thumbs up bro.
I have an idea for an episode! You guys remember the episode where you guys tried to see who could get a ticket first and you took the cop who was about to write a ticket and got him to chase you. You should see how many times you can do that in a row!
A 12 minute video selling his rental service to you in earshot of the Ferrari dealership that he recommends, for a commission. He's not your friend. He's not your pal. He is a salesman.
I bought a brand new Subaru STI without a test drive, because just try to get a Subaru dealer to let you test drive one. I was able to test drive a Nissan 370Z by dressing up a bit and driving up in a newer Cadillac CTS4. I was very interested in buying until I drove it, it was so bad...
This whole video is about driving PRIOR to signing papers, that’s very common for Ford Honda and Nissan Specifically, to ask for bank statements or finance papers to be signed to drive one of their GT350’s, Type R’s and GTR’s.
-Why not have a small fleet of test drive vehicles? -The dealer could check their age, license, make sure they have insureance and they should be good to go.
If you wanna get treated seriously in an exotic dealership... bring hot chicks with you. I was showing two visiting female friends around La Jolla and we went into the Lambo dealership there. I had been there multiple times before just to kick tires and got basically ignored, but I was treated COMPLETELY different when I walked in with the girls. I literally told the guy I was there just to look but he kept trying to sell me $300k+ cars.
Most west coast dealers will have a credit application policy for anything over $100K. Do the application and then they will offer you a test drive. One dealer let me keep a car for a day
Spent some time at Ferrari of Palo Alto. Didn't have the clothes to merit attention. Based upon your analysis I now understand. Silicon Valley is strange zip to make the assessment. Better results at McLaren on El Camino. If you actually in the market I would recommend
I walked in to a Benz dealership, they completely ignored me. In a sweatshirt and jeans. Finally I just walked up to one of the sales people and said "I'm here to buy this model, sell me one".
I bought my very first 'exotic' today, or at least it is to me. I was thinking about this video when the dealer offered the test drive to seal the deal.
Never go into a dealership with a blank slate. Always know what you are looking for and know the purpose of the car your looking for. Otherwise, you're going to leave driving something you never intended/wanted to own.
Good presentation, but sometimes it's not that simple. Some dealerships WILL judge you based on nothing more than your appearance. That's why I ALWAYS car shop in tee shirt, shorts and sneakers. If I'm received in a positive manner. That pretty much seals the deal. Audi Tampa, A+, Audi Columbia , A+ I've purchased cars from both, Audi Cary, F-,. Cary is MUCH closer, but I'd purchase anything from them, as a matter of fact I drove to Columbia to buy a car from them, about a 220 mile difference round trip.
So what would be the best way to buy a car from a avrege dealership if your just going to buy a regular car like what are some tips and things you can point out that the avrege person should know when going to buy from a dealership
I've been as broke as you can be and still got into dealerships and test drive cars for fun. I'm a car nerd, I ask all the questions, know all the options and usually know more about certain parts of the car than the dealer. Pretending I'm a legit buyer is easy

A V6 Mustang is still miles better than what I'm driving. A Nissan Sentra.... lol so you're doing alright
Rob Midgettetti
Rob Manletti
He's pretty short.
how short
Rob Midgetti would have been the correct way to say it...three syllables, not four.
Rob Serengetti
I'm too poor to even test drive a Ferrari.
Im deff. to poor and deff dont know anyone.....
James Smith in forza 7?
well u can test drive just dont say stupid things and wear something decent...and be specific.last month i took a cayman and a 911 for rides
No you’re not, you can anything you want
Today Mr. Spaghetti goes to a exotic car dealer to talk about Honda civic's
The real struggle is finding tall people clothes that are not for landbeasts
they have more kilowatts under ther ass than the entire dealership
This video has a ton of value which is what I love about Robs channel.
I'm 6'2 and It annoys me that I can never buy shirts that are long enough lol
Jose Pina same
Yup!!!
5'8 and i can say everything in stores fits perfectly
In today's video Mr. Spaghetti explains to us how to get the chef to give us a taste of his pasta
don't ever change.
I'm not spending 3k on a rental if i'm planning on buying a high end car for 250k +. Basically don't be an ass when looking to buy a car. If the dealer is blowing you off, go find a different dealer.
You have no clue.
Why did I just watch this whole video that restates the same point 10 times
Pretty much every one of his videos is about 50% too long.
In this episode Mr. Spaghetti shows you how to taste test some exquisite pasta
Exotic pasta*
Will dropping your name get me a test drive?
Eric Ortiz Yea just say Rob spaghetti is my dad
No, Chances are they'll kick you in the nuts.
@Joe Jacobsen
ROFLMAO
Chances are they exacute you
A trick I have used to be able to test some pretty new exotics..............I look at the car, then tell the salesman I would like to speak with their finance person if I could, just to make sure I can qualify for some sort of reasonable financing, before I get serious looking at the car.
Moral of the story rental car company is for joy rides and dealers are for buying cars.
EXCELLENT content! This video was spot on!
Today Mr. Spaghetti addresses his small noodle
As a guy who will be able to afford an exotic in a couple years, this is going in the “watch later” category because I found these tips pretty useful.
The more your down payment is..the less your monthly payment is. Learn your cars very well. Figure out what you want. Also suggest not buying an exotic until you can afford two of them
Your giving car salesmen WAY too much credit..... LMAO
GuillotineStare most of em maybe but he's talking about the salesmen at exotic dealerships I'm sure those dealerships don't hire people they'd consider non proffesional to sell cars to highly successful people
@@raululises2677 Youd be surprised, an ex of mine worked at an exotic dealership and some of the salesman were kind of a joke.
hmm any briefs out there that can hold my twig and berries? anyone? no? darn okay.
I came for a shit shower and shave pack... dammit
Funniest comment ive seen in awhile
Theres the comment I came here for!
nice music taste
I remember when Rob used to drive the cars instead of talking about test driving, yes the good ol days back before he had his license revoked, I guess podcasts are what this channel has come too now
This is very useful I'm gonna buy a Ferrari tomorrow.
Today Mr. Spaghetti taste tests a new pasta
TacoTom did you actually try to copy my comment? Are you kidding me?
John Bauss i think the new guy is tryin' to fit in 🤣 ...
Ivan Gonzales Gonzalez this is horrendous I can’t believe this guy
So basically it's like test driving any other car
The salesman at the dealership were so rude we just walked out
Ended up buying a Mercedes.
Jaguar is not high end, nor is Mercedes.
*In this video Rob shows you how to try italian spaghetti on ramen noodles budget*
Rob USED to shop at Baby Gap but now he’s upgraded
Dont judge the customer by their clothing. Came into the Jaguar dealer wearing an old t-shirt, jeans and a hoodie a bit tired from my gig last night. Sales person looked at me like I was scum. All the other suited up customers looked at me as trash. You should have seen their jaws dropped when the customer relation manager at the service department came out and said: Sir, your car is ready serviced...
I was about to buy a new F150 but I canceled when i saw it had 304 miles. They tried to discount it but I wanted my first new car to have less than 10 miles.
At least you have finally made a video of this. People should know
It all boils down to being able to actually afford the car.
These are your best videos!
Yes, I'm here to test drive one of your La Ferrari's. I don't have a lot of time...but, I'm seriously vacillating between one of these and a KIA Soul
Frankly all dealerships regardless of the brand work by appointments. Pick up the phone & make an appointment often the best place to start
This is actually a very informative video. Now I know how to con a dealership into letting me test drive their expensive cars! Thanks!
Great vid and insight on the industry thanks Rob
This is actually a great video, thanks!
What a great video. I'm a newbie entering the Ferrari market and this video was excellent advice, Rob. Thanks for helping me not look like a horse's ass. Two thumbs up bro.
"...writing a Rap song, when it goes large next month, I will be buying a Ferrari ..... let me test drive that one there..." Works EVERY time for me.
You look like GOB from Arrested Development, lol. Good vid!
What address should I send you a shirt? I bought one and it's slim fit doesn't work for me looks like you'll fit it perfect.
I have an idea for an episode! You guys remember the episode where you guys tried to see who could get a ticket first and you took the cop who was about to write a ticket and got him to chase you. You should see how many times you can do that in a row!
So, a 12 minute video of just standing in a Ferrari dealership preaching basic sense...
A 12 minute video selling his rental service to you in earshot of the Ferrari dealership that he recommends, for a commission. He's not your friend. He's not your pal. He is a salesman.
Even low end cars you should rent them first on toro, if something wont hold up, youll see it on a rental.
This might apply to low rent buyers, but for premium clients, your proper Ferrari dealer will let you drive anything to keep you happy.
Wow great advice!! will be using this when I am looking to purchase a car.
Me, I work at Walmart:
“ Yes, hi, I would like to test drive the Culinan”
This is how I went about getting my 2017 GT350 took it off the showroom floor, didnt test drive it til after I signed papers.
Jake Ford because it's not practical to stock a bunch of Ferraris for people to test drive all the time haha
I go to that dealer all the time with my dad, it's in Nanuet NY, upstate, right by the border of NJ.
i dont need to go to an exotic dealership to meet you. The Bellagio worked just fine! w/ a POS corolla lol
One dealer let me keep a car for a day
A CLEAN 360 IS IN EUROPE NOW UNDER 60000$,a spyder for 70000$ shipping insured to the US is 2000$....
Where i live. If you walk into any of these high end dealerships and you're not Chinese and you wanna test drive even if you have the $$. Good luck!
Rob I work for BMW of Seattle and I see this all the time. They are so funny!!! Mostly Its the M cars or the i8.
I bought my very first 'exotic' today, or at least it is to me. I was thinking about this video when the dealer offered the test drive to seal the deal.
Mr.Spaghetti jokes aside this was really good and helpful video IMO
In this episode Mr. Spaghetti explains the tactics for getting free samples.
Great video, good actionable information. Don't mind the sponsor plug in the beginning, good hustle sir.
Working in car sales this is extremely true if only everyone were like this..
I use to work at a Maserati dealer they DEF treated the ppl who rolled up in nice cars (porsches, Bentley, Aston) better and more seriously
I've been as broke as you can be and still got into dealerships and test drive cars for fun. I'm a car nerd, I ask all the questions, know all the options and usually know more about certain parts of the car than the dealer. Pretending I'm a legit buyer is easy
