My dad LOVED The Dungeon of Doom. He created a character using the "Jones" character class, named him Caissa which is the name he used on all his games, and played it on and off for over a year, he reached that final level, got the orb, then climbed all the way back to the first until he reached the exit and got that ending screen of having escaped the dungeon with the orb. He was so proud of that, because it had been such a VERY hard game. And, keep in mind, my dad was never good at video games (except Tetris)
I loved playing this on my Mac SE. So much amazing Shareware back then. In fact, the only game I clearly remember paying for was Space Rogue. Of course, Mac games were notoriously hard to find in stores in the early 90s and I lived in Philadelphia. Great video!
I can't recall how many hours I spent in my high school computer lab playing this game.
My father had a Macintosh SE and I used to play this, vector tank, amps, air traffic controller, Mavis beacon teaches typing, but to this day nothing has inspired me quite like the Dungeon of Doom
That's some fond memories there, like using all my wands to immediately blind myself
Formative games on my Dad's Mac Plus: Dungeon of Doom, The Dark Castle, The Manhole, and Skyfox (that one forgot that you couldn't simply pull a 3.5" floppy out of the drive the way you could with a 5.25". Had to use a paperclip to eject it any time we finished playing it).
The step sound brought me back. The fast monster always got me. Killed him once.
Man I love these games
This game was a huge influence on me. My dad brought home a Mac II from work and it sat in our living room until I started using it. I learned about Hypercard and Dungeon of Doom. I spent many hours on it. I loved this game.
I have it on a floppy. My favorite game when I was a kid.
Plot twist - the final bosses are actually Kevin Sullivan, The Shark, and The Zodiac.
Ah, yes - Rogue! I remember playing the retail version for hours back in the day. Rogue eventually spawned an entire genre, as you said.
Been waiting for this. My favorite Mac game from my childhood.
Your videos bring back memories I didn't even know I had!
I was OBSESSED with Dungeons of Doom, staying up until 3am and beyond instead of doing Uni stuff - until I finally got hold of Levitation Potion for when the Floor hits you on level 17 or whatever and IT DID NOT WORK! That it when I gave up and returned to the real world…. (Sorry Thing, this has appeared on your profile:-/ )
cool bit of history :)
I rember this on a Commodore pet back in the 80s 0:30
What an amazing game! I hope you have more time to devote to the channel. Brilliant.
Oh, man, if I had this game back in the day, I totally would have gone for the source code.
One of my favorite games from back in the day. I didn't realize all the versions and differences! Great info, Gruz. Thanks!
geez i remember playing this game ages ago, i hope i still have it somewhere or it’s easy to get, looks quite cool for it’s time, thanks grub :)
IIRC the "actual graphics" in Mac Rogue were just a special font created for the game.
The Classic Mac of Doom
I loved this game when I was a kid!
Reminds me of Chip's Challenge
Loved DOD 4.0 back in the day, although if not for starvation I probably would have made it past the halfway point. Awesome review for the depth of what things do and such 😁👍
Great game.
Frankly I never gave a thought as to why they were called "Rogue-likes". Makes more sense than "metroidvania" really. Ascii games are neat. Kroz and ZZT were a lot of fun.
Metroidvanias should just be called Metroidlikes
My favorite was when you eat too much, you stomach explodes!!
Amnesia scroll has the same effect as the randomizer in ToeJam and Earl.
I played the shareware version of this on my original 512ke. Kinda feeling like firing up an emulator, or seeing if my Mac Plus still works. 😀
I used to play this a LOT but never came anywhere near finishing it. I would LOVE to play again. How can I make that happen now? Can anyone help? I’d be very grateful!
Did the Dungeon Revealed or any of the Dungeon of Doom releases ever get an actual boxed retail release? I've seen images of official-looking floppies but I've never seen a boxed copy of any of these games or even an image.
Not sure if it had a box but this is what I have seen of it: imgur.com/LSsPMo9
@@insanelygruz thanks! that's more info than I was able to find. Id assume if they had fairly professional looking disk labels and what appears to be a small manual there would be a box out there for it as well.
