This is a situation I don't think I've seen before, but if I have I can guarantee you it didn't happen at a meet as big as NCAAs. Thanks for all the love on the videos recently y'all. More good stuff in the works for Men's NCAAs as well as Trials, the Olympics, and beyond.

Pretty sure his history is reversed though. Breast stroke came before butterfly. There was no rule for how arms recovered for breaststroke so someone started doing butterfly arms with their breastroke kick and it was faster. Then they made it its own stroke.
      Might be wrong though

    • @monkeybob

Not just butterfly, breaststroke was THE first competitive stroke. (Crawl existed elsewhere but wasn't common in Britain when the sport emerged.) Even the first English Channel crossing was breaststroke! It is slow, but easy to learn and useful. You can keep your head above water, change direction quickly, and it still works well enough wearing clothes or only making gentle small movements. Even today breaststroke-y movements are often used when it's not just about speed: sailors, soldiers, water polo players.

Freestyle is freestyle, meaning you can swim any stroke.
Front crawl is the stroke most freestyle swimmers choose, because it's normally fastest, but they're not obliged to use front crawl in a freestyle event.

Back in the 80's, in high school, our anchor leg for the free relay swam fly because it was faster than her free and actually, it was faster than just about everyone else's free. That's when I learned that freestyle actually means "do what you want" and that "crawl stroke" was what we were supposed to say instead of freestyle.

reminds me of the time when I accidentally swam butterfly instead of freestyle at the end of a 200m medley relay at a summer swim meet. idk why i did it. I think it was just instinctual because I was in the zone and not thinking, and I saw my teammate coming in with butterfly so my subconscious went, "oh cool, butterfly".

I had to do 400m freestyle once on a smaller meet, but i’m really not a long distance swimmer by any means. And just like any other race I got nervous beforehand, but because i hand’t swam this in almost 4 years i felt even more pressure to perform well. So I was very nervous to the point where i was sick to my stomach. But I still went to the blocks, dove in and started swimming freestyle, and the first lap was fine, but when I swam back (it was in a 25m pool) i looked down as your supposed to do while you swim freestyle and in this pool that I was swimming in it was very weird, but where you dive in the pool was deeper, but only for lane 1, 2, 3 and halve the lane of 4. I was swimming on lane 4. I saw that and the sickness that I just forgot about when I dove into the pool came back even worse. But I just thought ‘just ignore it’ and so I did. I swam another 2 laps but again when I came back I felt so sick and when not thinking about it I just started swimming the slowest backstroke anybody probably has ever seen. But in the end I did finish it was with a horrible time even worse then 4 years ago by a second. But at least I didn’t get dq’ed.

I came up doing breast and the guys on either side of me literally stopped swimming because they thought they were doing the wrong stroke. At first judges DQ'd me but then they reversed it. But next year there was a rule change in the league that defined freestyle as "a stroke other than the other 3 strokes". So I was responsible for a rule change which was probably my greatest accomplishment in the sport. LOL

At 10 I had two events at a swim meet and I mixed them up by mistake. The first one was supposed to be freestyle up and back. But by mistake I did the second event which was a breaststroke up and freestyle back, I did a breaststroke turn, which is slower than a flip turn, but it did secure my foot placement better on the wall to launch myself with a strong push off the wall and having had a full breath in the turn I didn't have to take a breath for about 8 freestyle arms. I won anyway...😅

Crikey, I must have been ahead of my time...as a teenager in the 70's I swam fly over 100 yards (33.3+yards per length) especially at district level as my fly was actually faster than my freestyle (crawl)...and yes I did a flip/tumble turn without my hands touching the wall or rail. The times were a lot slower back in the day for all strokes but we still gave it go. I still think the rules should be changed about touching the wall on both fly and breaststroke especially since they changed the laws/rules for backstroke.

I definitely think it was intentional, likely because of how they had to shuffle people around. They likely wanted somebody else to swim it, but she had to be put in the slot, and they just told her to swim butterfly based on the data. Just because it wasn't the best split in the field doesn't mean it was the wrong decision.

Well, I have never understood why flip turns are not allowed with the fly and breast stroke since they are faster than an open turn.
I have yet to hear any argument on the underwater dolphin kick that explains why some think it is faster on your back than on your tummy. If you watch the clip on Lochte, he is doing more of the back stroke style where there is less flex at the hip and more at the knee. Same with back stroke flutter kick.
Can't remember your comment about breast stroke, other than about frogs. It replaced the much faster over arm side stroke because it was more 'gentlemanly' because there was less splashing. The OAS is a long axis stroke, and as one coach said to me, it is almost like you are swimming freestyle on your side..... 1:02.5 for 100 yards, in 1895, almost 130 years ago....

I was a swimmer in high school and college and tend to watch swimming in the Olympics.
I have never heard of anyone on a free relay doing anything except traditional on-your-belly crawl stroke
"Crawl" is the proper name for what is done when the event says "free-style" although no one in the
sport every calls it "Crawl". .
Since historically the Crawl stroke is the fastest stroke, should you want to win a race and were
technically given the choice of stroke as in Free-to-choose-a-stroke, a swimmer who wanted to
win would do Crawl 100% of the time ........ that is until this event where a national swimmer was
capable of doing "Fly" faster than "Crawl" for free-style.

the whole metric verses imperial measurement thing is an issue of confusion for every one who doesnt use the English measurement system.

If she's faster at butterfly AND can put a flip turn in because it's 'freestyle'...smart move.

The Ryan Lochte rule is stupid. They interpret it only for butterfly kicks on your back -> you're doing backstroke. Whereas if you're doing butterfly kicks on your breast -> you're not doing butterfly.

Why imperial measure is used baffles me still. By your own law jou should use metric. Yard and inches are Defined by meters. But hey…
Free strok I, relay schould be an different stroke, free stroke on its,own should be free. An old official who suited 15 years ago, rules can be changed

CRAP - You should not be allowed to change your stroke on a whim - The coach allowed this. PR allowed this, NCAA allowed this - Totally premeditated 💩💩💩💩
