- As promised, here is a video about how I mixed the drums recorded in my series on micing up drums.
Much more to go into later on but this covers a lot of the essential stuff.
Feel free to comment with any questions etc.
Thanks, Mark, for all of this. I appreciate all of the nitty gritty bits and bobs you're considering during the process. Sometimes your asides are every bit as informative. It's Cesar Chavez Day here in San Diego. I have the day off from work to honor and celebrate the man who invented the Mexican Caesar salad. Taco shells, grated parmesan, hot sauce, anchovies, ground beef, black pepper, diced tomatoes, and fettucine alfredo, all served on a bed of crisp romaine. This one's for you.
cortical1 no worries man! It’s worth making these vid just for your comments 😂 Enjoy yourself!
@@markrobertsproducerenginee945 Just trying to give back in my small way. 👍🏻
I'm a second year Production student at LCoM and I've learned more about mixing rock drums from this video than I have during my whole course, cheers man!
Angus H ah thanks so much, dude! Really happy it’s helped you out!!
Your West Country accent when you say “Joey Sturgis Tones” kills me haha, great video man! Rad to see your process, sounds really sick.
Fantastic! Just a quickie: Would be great to hear a section where Ben is crashing away - I have a hard time setting my cymbal to shells balance in heavy sections of a song.
LukeBass1000 fair point man, should have shown some more cymbal stuff! Was largely hat grooves etc to be fair. Was pretty controlled though. Cymbals are always a pain to get right. Will be sure to do more on this mate 😉
Hey Mark, thanks for the video! Really nice mix indeed! Just wanted to ask about the use of effects on drums. I saw that you used only the physical sounds of the kit and no reverb and delays. Just wanted your opinion on that. Thanks again!
George Kalivas thanks man!
The annoying answer is unfortunately “it depends”.
I guess if you can get everything from the recording you’ve done then you’re sorted. However if the recording for whatever reason needs helping out with effects, reverb, triggers etc then my feeling is use whatever gets you there! It might just be the genre that dictates this even if you have the “perfect recording”.
Hope this helps, thanks for watching!
🤓
hey mate, new to mixing drums here. What are some of the most essential plug-ins you would get if you were in my shoes? Thanks in advance!
Great video dude.
Wil Wainwright thanks bro! 🙏
Did you eq/compress during tracking? These drums sound decent right off the bat
Poliszynel Nice one! little bit of eq on the board, usually. Nothing drastic. And some compression on room mics. That’s about it. Just well tuned drums in a nice room with a good player, that’s the stuff that makes the biggest impact on the sound I think 😊
By adding the limiter to the drum bus could it be said you're doing a fully mastered drum track? Is this how you do most or all of your drum mixes, or was this just for the sake of the video?
DavidSJ quite right. I guess It was a master of sorts in this case. Saying that, it’s not unheard of in a heavy tune for me to use some very light limiting if I feel the track need it 😊
@@markrobertsproducerenginee945 OK, cool...thanks...I should have said originally, though, that I think the track sounds amazing...I really appreciate your approach, and appreciate your sharing it...it's going to have a major effect on how I do things...Cheers!
DavidSJ Ah thanks Dude. Glad it’s of some use to you! 🙏
Can't wait to watch this on decent speakers!
Thumbs up before I even start
so good man haha
