WatchMojo got it 100% right with putting "White Rabbit" at #1. All the other songs on this list came after White Rabbit, so that song was the one that pushed the most barriers because no song like that had ever been written before. The Jefferson Airplane were certainly before their time, and set the groundwork for so many other stoner groups from all musical genres. They easily deserve the top spot! Great list WatchMojo. I'd also add a Rolling Stones song, or 2, to the list.
It does have a meaning one is about aid Barrett mind going and one time Rodger waters had bad stomach cramps and was shot up with tranquilizers and did a show completely numb
"Comfortably Numb" is about an experience Roger Waters had with tranquilizers given to him by a doctor for his stomach cramps. I guess that sort of makes it about drugs but not in the way the others on this list are.
Bob Ross nah. I believe the name was a coincidence but the contents are totally about LSD and were intentionally written as such. just my opinion though.
Best drug song by far is Feel Good Hit of the Summer by Queens of the Stone Age. Just search the title and Rockwerchter for the best vid on YT! it's about the inescapable institution of addiction "you can check out any time you like but you can never leave" ie trying to quit but staying hooked. the "beast" is the vice killing you and keeping you from leaving
Yes master of Puppets is about drugs "Taste me you will see, More is all you need" , "Come crawling faster, Obey your Master, Your life burns faster" , "Chop your breakfast on a mirror" , etc
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds wasn't the only song by the Beatles with drug references. Hey Jude is supposedly about Heroin (Jude was a slang term for Heroin. There's also the line about letting her under your skin, an obvious reference to shooting up). There was also I Am the Walrus which supposedly at the end of the song there is a chorus of Smoke Pot, Smoke Pot, Everybody Smoke Pot.
An Syd was only there for 1 and 1/2 albums. The rest of Pink Floyd's discography had a trippy aesthetic and vibe but wasn't really about drugs necessarily.

Top 5 list: 5. Longview - Green Day 4. Because I Got High -Afroman 3. White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane 2. Aneurysm - Nirvana 1. Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix
"THAT SMELL" by Lynyrd Skynyrd didn't make this list? I thought for sure it would be in the top 5, because that song is written all about substance abuse. Read below ... check out some of the lines from the song's lyrics. "Whiskey bottles, brand new cars... oak tree you're in my way. There's too much coke and too much smoke; look what's going on inside you." "Now they call you Prince Charming ... can't speak a word when you're full of Ludes." Angel of darkness is upon you ... stuck a needle in your arm. So take another toke; have a blow for your nose ... one more drink fool, will drown you." "One little problem that confronts you ... got a monkey on your back. Just one more fix, Lord, might do the trick ... one hell of a price for you to get your kicks."
Hotel California? Hotel California is about the Members of the Eagles going to the hotel california to cleanse them selves but it is impossible because of there addiction like the line in the song "you can check out anytime you like but u can never leave" means that they can't quit

Tiziano Di Giuseppe That was the first song that came to my mind from them regarding the topic of drugs. They do have other songs about drugs but they are a lot less blunt regarding the subject.
I had to laugh when she kept saying "pink" like that was a person. The song is about Sid Barrett and his struggles with schizophrenia. He also had drug problems but I believe the song refers to the drugs given him by doctors to fight his mental issues.
Jarred Augenstein YES IT IS. It is sung by the character, Pink, and is a direct reference to Pink's manager forcibly shooting him up with something to get him out on stage. So it is not about the band using drugs, but it IS about drugs. The entire album is a story about Pink, who becomes a rock star. I listened to this whole album back when it came out, played on the radio with commentary from Roger Waters himself, and that was the explanation.
Dave Schmidbauer That song is NOT about Syd Barrett. Pink IS a person. "The Wall" is a story about a kid named Pink (in reference to the line in "Have a Cigar" - "Oh by the way, which one's Pink?") who dreams of becoming a rock star, does so, and finds out it's not what he imagined. "Comfortably Numb" is the part in the story where the rock star Pink is totally disillusioned and unwilling to keep performing, so his manager shoots him up with something against his will to get him out on stage. Trust me on this. I was a senior in high school when this came out, I heard Roger Waters talk about the entire album on a radio program back in the day. "The Wall" was basically a "rock opera" with a story line. If you don't believe me, listen to the entire album in order, in one sitting, or watch the (really crappy) movie that came out later. It's very obvious. The album was also "therapy" for Roger Waters, I think. He never got over his father being killed in WWII. ("Daddy's flown across the ocean, leaving just a memory . . . .") When asked about the final song on the album, "Goodbye Cruel World," he refused to explain its meaning, saying only that it was "the last song on the album."
+Tayne Staley Agreed! I was sitting waiting for at least 1 Alice In Chains song but no. I mean they could have picked Junk, Godsmack, Sludge Factory, Head Creeps and thevlist goes on. Hell they could have picked any of the songs off of Mad Seasons Above and it would have worked!
+retroNES2600 That's what I thought! and almost any off of Dirt would have sufficed. not to mention the couple on Facelift dedicated to drugs. I expected them to mention SOMETHING from my favorite band. or Mad-Season, (or pretty much anything Layne Staley sung) but no. I actually came to the comments to write what I was thinking and quickly noticed Malika's comment, pleased I wasnt the only one who had thought of it.
The solo to that song makes you feel like you are on a drug that's why it's the best song the others are about drugs but after you hear that solo they don't come close
"That Smell" by Lynyrd Skynyrd includes alcohol, pills and needles. "The smell of death surrounds you." This is an anti-drug song from "Street Survivors" ; Skynyrd's brilliant and last studio album... Rest in Peace Ronnie Van Zant, Townes Van Zandt, Bon Scott and Hank Williams; all of whom have written songs about drugs... Rest in Peace Steve Gaines; an unsung rock star
"There She Goes" by The La's ('she' is actually heroin) "White Lines (Don't Do It)" by Grandmaster Flash Half of Snoop Dog's back catalogue Pretty much any song with the name Mary-Jane in it
Wooooooow. Here, Mojo, let me help you guys with ideas. Cause, this is getting...ugh. Top Ten Colors Top Ten Noises Top Ten Brad Pitt Sun Glasses Top Ten Kid's Shows That Are Great To Watch When You're High Top Ten Top Ten Countdowns Y'all probably are working on half of these.
Why do people seem to think that they are running out of ideas? 1) This is a perfectly fine example of a list 2) They don't come up with the list, each one is voted upon on their website.
Tomorrow never knows should be in the list instead of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. It was the song that initiated psychedelic rock and it is equally good
WOW! I've never heard the Number one song before, that sounds so fucking cool! Would have liked to see Sweet Leaf on the list instead of an honourable mention, great song.
NOTHING oasis did is worth mentioning. They were crap who didn't have any original ideas, they stole everything they did,(Even quotes in interviews) from The Beatles,Stones,Sex pistols and many others.I detest them.
Agree with 'Needle and the Damage Done', 'Legend of a Mind' (Moody Blues) and 'Mother's Little Helper' (Rolling Stones). Honorable mentions: Looking Out My Backdoor (Creedence Clearwater Revival), 'Along Comes Mary' (The Association), Magic Carpet Ride (Steppenwolf), 'Just Dropped in (to see what condition my condition was in)' (First Edition), 'Kicks' (Paul Revere and the Raiders), White Room (Cream), No No Song (Ringo Starr), One Toke Over the Line (Brewer and Shipley), Coming into Los Angeles (Arlo Guthrie).
albert davila Nope, drugs. "Taste me you will see, more is all you need" = The begining of a drug adiction. "Veins that pump with fear, sucking darkest clear, Leading on your deaths' construction". Most likely a refrence to the paranoia that alot of drug adicts suffer, and the second part is a refrence to how drugs kill. "Needlework the way", pretty self explanatory. The entire song is a trip through a drug adiction (like Mr. Brownstone) beging with a small taste, and the evolving to something bigger, ending with him being left for death.
My personal song to start off smoking is Cypress Hill's "I Wanna Get High". Gets me in the perfect happy mood. After that I just let the entire album play. Why not. It's a classic and is still dope today.
“Captain Jack” by Billy Joel (Piano Man album) was about heroin. Captain Jack was the street name of the heroin dealer in Joel’s hometown, Oyster Bay, Long Island.
I don't know if I would call 'Comfortably Numb' a drug song. It is a song about insanity and losing touch with reality. Granted drugs might have had something to do with that, but ultimately, it is about losing your mind.
The song was written after a Roger Waters (i think or it was Gillmore) got sick during a show. That was the original inspiration, but then drug influences were added.
"Just a little pinprick, there will be no more ahhhhh"...yeah not about drugs? Jesus you people need songs to be written like "cocaine" for you to think its a drug song.
+Arthur Sepeda "The song, as lead singer James Hetfield explained, "deals pretty much with drugs. How things get switched around, instead of you controlling what you're taking and doing, it's drugs controlling you."[4] The song was bassist Cliff Burton's favorite song on the album, as quoted when the album was released. The song is one of the band's most famous and popular songs, frequently played at concerts."
Where's Tool's "Rosetta Stoned"? The song itself is a trip. It takes you on the audio trip about the story of a DMT trip. A friend of theirs. Was it about Bill Manspeaker's experience? I forget. Green Jellö dude.
I think it ties into the wall, and how he is "comfortably numb" to the harsh realities of modern society. Comortably numb because he knows he can do nothing to change it, so he builds a "wall" in his mind to make himself numb to the truth.
Draggin' The Line (Tommy James), Snowblind (Ace Frehley), Semi-Charmed Life (3rd Eye Blind), Speedfreak (Motorhead), Beauty and the Beast (David Bowie), Sanctified (NIN), Here Comes the Nice (Small Faces), Mother's Little Helper (Rolling Stones), Amphetamine (Everclear), Got to Get You Into my Life (Beatles), Rainy Day Women (Bob Dylan).
Fun fact: Comfortably Numb's lyrics were written by Roger Waters who took some tranquilizers to get through a live performance, inspiring the lyrics
TANK YOU!
are you sure he wasn't dope sick and couldn't preform ..and his manager shot him up with heroin
trust me your right i been a iv drug user for to damn long my fave is speed balls but when your dope sick me and anyone i know get that first fix and yep they say ahhhh or thank you god or my fave ahhh................. fuck...... damn dog im so much better wow damn dude ......how can ya go from sick to feeling so amazing lol my boy said that today he been out for a cpl days

Purple haze is actually about acid. The strain of marijuana is named after the song
Ralf Nuggs its about a dream
Purple Haze is about a dream that Jimi had where he was walking under the sea.
I heard it's about a woman
It's absolutely about LSD …. I know, I dropped some in'68 ….

What about Last dance with Maryjane by Tom Petty? I don't know if it's just me but I think the song has to do with smokin weed.
I;m also suprised too that the song did not make the list. Yes, Last dance with Mary Jane is about marijuana
synthia keyboard Actually it is not about Marijuana at all, was about a romance the guitarist had.
SlappyDoogle Mary Jane is another name for Marijuana!

It's actually called MaryJane's last dance. They're also missing mr tambourine man, master of puppets, rooster, and under the bridge.

What about "Snowblind" by Black Sabbath? That song is clearly about cocaine.
Kenneth Dorning trueeee
"Comfortably Numb" is about an experience Roger Waters had with tranquilizers given to him by a doctor for his stomach cramps. I guess that sort of makes it about drugs but not in the way the others on this list are.
I clicked on this thinking Snoop would be on the top, then not even one song from him
I think they're only putting songs that are actually good on this list
yup. he had a few about weed or were just incl. in the lyrics. u can tell those who are quick 2 judge yet havent listened to his music

lucy in the sky with diamonds is very known because of the entire song was just talking about that certain drug..
The Beatles topping Pink Floyd on a list about drugs? The person who made this list must of been on drugs.
Woy Henderson pink floyd didnt do a lot of drugs tbh, except for sid barret he was the crazy acid head but that was before david gilmour

There's too much coke and too much smoke; look what's going on inside you."

Angel of darkness is upon you ... stuck a needle in your arm. So take another toke; have a blow for your nose ... one more drink fool, will drown you."
"One little problem that confronts you ... got a monkey on your back. Just one more fix, Lord, might do the trick ... one hell of a price for you to get your kicks."
Ronnie wrote it because he's trying to keep his band members off drugs. Needle and the spoon is another Skynyrd drug song.
That's what im saying. White rabbit is literally about Alice in wonderland, which is already trippy all they had to do was make a trippy beat lol
Hotel California? Hotel California is about the Members of the Eagles going to the hotel california to cleanse them selves but it is impossible because of there addiction like the line in the song "you can check out anytime you like but u can never leave" means that they can't quit
Right on the money
The song has a lot of interpretations, including addiction and materialism. It would be tough to make a case that it's just about drugs.
They had Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds but I really wanted them to have another Sgt. Pepper song, like A Day in the Life-The Beatles

Tiziano Di Giuseppe That was the first song that came to my mind from them regarding the topic of drugs. They do have other songs about drugs but they are a lot less blunt regarding the subject.
Exactly my Thoughts ! Funny thing is, the lyrics are only Names of Drugs, it MUST be on this list !
Oh for Christ's sake, COMFORTABLY NUMB IS NOT ABOUT DRUGS.
Jarred Augenstein THANK YOU None of the Floyd even had any drug problems
I had to laugh when she kept saying "pink" like that was a person. The song is about Sid Barrett and his struggles with schizophrenia. He also had drug problems but I believe the song refers to the drugs given him by doctors to fight his mental issues.
Justin Voyzey They never had drug problems but they all smoked weed in the early days, it's all in the book Crazy Diamond.
("Daddy's flown across the ocean, leaving just a memory . . . .")
When asked about the final song on the album, "Goodbye Cruel World," he refused to explain its meaning, saying only that it was "the last song on the album."
Who ELSE fucking loves Tame Impala am I right?
i feel like a different word choice for capitalization would have been more fitting
Its Not Host 😂
Such an underated band
whostolemyTV yes I knooooww 😞
+whostolemyTV
Tame Impala is extremely overrated. Temples is underrated.
No Hurt by Nine Inch Nails?
It is about a heroin addiction
Halo Eight Productions I would've said Nrain Stew by Green Day, but Hurt's a good option. 🖒
what about JUNKHEAD? ? MOJO DON'T LIKE AIC!!! LOL 😲
I do love #1.....lma0o
+Malika StaleyHoonBuckley OMG! I was sitting here thinking the same thing! "what about Junkhead? that should have been 1#!"
I commented the same thing and was looking to see who else is with me..that's crazy that that it none of their others are ok this list its bullshit
Beetlebum-Blur
Electric Feel- MGMT (or any song by them really)
Two songs that come to mind for me that I'm surprised didn't get a mention was Neil Young's Needle and the Damage Done and Alice in Chains Junkhead
D12-These Drugs
or purple pills
nazariyscoot or Blow my Buzz
Best one is Comfortably Numb
The best of the best!!!
it's not about drugs though
Its not about drugs
Its not about drugs but its good to listen on drugs
The solo to that song makes you feel like you are on a drug that's why it's the best song the others are about drugs but after you hear that solo they don't come close
The Beatles needs to be every list on here.
No Alice In Chains even in the honorable mentions? Dirt is the greatest drug album ever.
"That Smell" by Lynyrd Skynyrd includes alcohol, pills and needles.
"The smell of death surrounds you."
This is an anti-drug song from "Street Survivors" ; Skynyrd's brilliant and last studio album...
Rest in Peace Ronnie Van Zant, Townes Van Zandt, Bon Scott and Hank Williams; all of whom have written songs about drugs...
Rest in Peace Steve Gaines; an unsung rock star
"There She Goes" by The La's ('she' is actually heroin)
"White Lines (Don't Do It)" by Grandmaster Flash
Half of Snoop Dog's back catalogue
Pretty much any song with the name Mary-Jane in it
V
Q1qqaa
Iain Meldrum Yes! White lines! Haven't heard that song forever!
"Smoke weed everyday" by Snoop Dogg is SOOO lame!
I don't like snoop dogg so why would I care?
tom petty Mary Jane's last dance
What happened to "Mary Jane" by Rick James?
+lovettetlb Thank you I was trying to remember that song.
As much as I love Rick James Tom Pettys "Last Dance With Mary Jane" should come first.
OR the SONG with THE SAME NAME by THE BEATLES.... ???
Oh yea forgot about that one
They aren't gonna put a black man before ppl
Wooooooow. Here, Mojo, let me help you guys with ideas. Cause, this is getting...ugh.
Top Ten Colors
Top Ten Noises
Top Ten Brad Pitt Sun Glasses
Top Ten Kid's Shows That Are Great To Watch When You're High
Top Ten Top Ten Countdowns
Y'all probably are working on half of these.
They've done top ten top ten countdowns
-faceplams- Done.
We all know Peewee's Playhouse would be top of the kids should to watch while you're high list . So there's now two reasons not to do it .
Why do people seem to think that they are running out of ideas?
1) This is a perfectly fine example of a list
2) They don't come up with the list, each one is voted upon on their website.
Lucy in the sky with diamonds should be number one because its the best song on the list. FACT. NO QUESTION!!!!!!
No.
+ Retro_Compilations I agree with you.
The fact it remained speculation for so long is the reason it's not higher.
Purple Haze and Sweet Leaf are better.
My list:
10)jimi hendrix - purple haze
9)guns n roses - Mr brownstone
8)black sabbath - sweet leaf
7)oasis - morning glory
6)eric clapton - cocaine
5)black sabbath - snowblind
4)Pink floyd - confortably numb
3)jefferson airplane - white rabbit
2)velvet underground - heroin
1)ozzy osbourne - flying high again
Tomorrow never knows and got to get you into my life
Tommorow Never Knows is not about drugs, although it was certaintly inspired by LSD. Got to Get you into my life is about pot.
I think 'The A Team' by Ed Sheeran should at LEAST be an honourable mention...
Gross
Ofcourse
your awesome
Ew
Seems fair? It's got a nice sound
Wait why is Oasis Morning Glory on here? It's clearly a song about waking up with an erection
Dirty bastard
GoldNinja Vlogspot Fancy meeting you here!
NOTHING oasis did is worth mentioning. They were crap who didn't have any original ideas, they stole everything they did,(Even quotes in interviews) from The Beatles,Stones,Sex pistols and many others.I detest them.
"Chained to the mirror and razor blade" is a cocaine reference
Master of Puppets?
My question exactly
albert davila Nope, drugs.
AntonyPancake I didn't press attention to lyrics . Thanx!
AntonyPancake "Chop your breakfast on a mirror."
Even though it's not technically about drugs, We Found Love by Rihanna is by far my favorite song to get high to.
Jimi Hendrix
cocain blues by johnny cash, snowblind by black sabbath, i need drugs by necro???
My personal song to start off smoking is Cypress Hill's "I Wanna Get High". Gets me in the perfect happy mood. After that I just let the entire album play. Why not. It's a classic and is still dope today.
What about in love with Mary Jane, by Rick James?
Ikr and because I got high
These lists are so whitewashed.
I think that Stranglers' Golden Brown should be number one.. one of the best lyrics ever written... And its really emotional as well!
Made the same comment..
Did u guys forget "under the bridge"?
“Captain Jack” by Billy Joel (Piano Man album) was about heroin. Captain Jack was the street name of the heroin dealer in Joel’s hometown, Oyster Bay, Long Island.
yall made the 10 ways to tie a shoe video yet?
I don't know if I would call 'Comfortably Numb' a drug song. It is a song about insanity and losing touch with reality. Granted drugs might have had something to do with that, but ultimately, it is about losing your mind.
I thought it was a fever.
Yeah i wouldn't call it a drug song
Especially since Pink Floyd never actually did drugs.
Where the fuck is Master of Puppets
+Lisa S. I think Master of Puppets talks about autoritarism not drugs.
+Arthur Sepeda it is actually about drugs
+Arthur Sepeda "The song, as lead singer James Hetfield explained, "deals pretty much with drugs. How things get switched around, instead of you controlling what you're taking and doing, it's drugs controlling you."[4] The song was bassist Cliff Burton's favorite song on the album, as quoted when the album was released. The song is one of the band's most famous and popular songs, frequently played at concerts."
Lisa S. Interesting, where you saw it? Can you link me?
+Arthur Sepeda just go on wikipedia and look up the song, I found it there. (:
Where's Tool's "Rosetta Stoned"? The song itself is a trip. It takes you on the audio trip about the story of a DMT trip. A friend of theirs. Was it about Bill Manspeaker's experience? I forget. Green Jellö dude.
Not sure if " Sweet Leaf" by Black Sabbath will be on here, but damn if it doesn't deserve a spot on the list.
At least it made Honorable Mentions.
Yea I know right.
I've always though Snowblind to be a better song by them, as far as drug based songs go that is.
mara10na4ever
What!? No Master of Puppets by Metallica? Not even an Honorable mention?
Uuuuh, that's about drugs? I don't think so.
slug237711 obviously is about the muppets right?
yeah, pay attention to the lyrics.
It just says top 10 songs about drugs, doesn't have to be pro drugs at all.
***** Most songs on this list are anti-drug.
Heroin should have been #1
100%
+Hexted It is absolute shit.
Obviously you don't even do heroin whitefacedakota
Hexted It is a shit song, I understand why people like it and how they can associate with it spiritually, but it is complete shit as a song.
whitefacedakota
Naw it's an awesome song
One song that I feel is missing atleast from the honorable mentions is Pray To The Junkie Maker by Fishbone
No Purple Pills - D12?
I believe Comfortably numb was actually written about when one of the members for rely sick on a tour
*really
I think it ties into the wall, and how he is "comfortably numb" to the harsh realities of modern society.
Comortably numb because he knows he can do nothing to change it, so he builds a "wall" in his mind to make himself numb to the truth.
Reubyn Carter Wow... that's deep
Reubyn Carter Yeah that sounds good! It's close to what I feel today... just don't watch the news and be comfortably dumb.
kissanrutku Nice pun
What about "Feel Good Hit of the Summer" from Queens of the Stone Age?! The whole lyrics speaks about drugs!
Right ! There is no more explicit song about drugs than this one.
Thank you!
Metallica - Master of Puppets should be on this list
Lol they put that song in almost every video they relasse
Release*
What drug is that about?
Samantha Andrews it's about Cocain
I was very surprised Bob Marley wasn't in the list,
And Snoop Dog/Lion or w/e his name is now.
OMG! BECAUSE I GOT HIGH SHOULD HAVE BEEN #1
- I was gonna clean the room but I got high da da da!!
