Joseph, I want to thank you for the time spent in sharing these absolutely beautiful and inspirational videos of your treks along the WM region. I have watched each of your videos and they have inspired me to begin hiking. I want to follow your lead and make some of the hikes you have mapped out. I am 70 so I want to begin small and work my way up to some 4K hikes. I know I am starting much later in life, but I am hoping that I can encourage my sons and my grandchildren to begin early in life enjoying the beauty of the White Mountains. Thanks again for inspiring these old bones.
Larry, thank you so much for the kind words! Hearing from fellow hikers like yourself is exactly why I love making these videos and I'm so glad to hear that they have made you excited to get out and enjoy the mountains. It's never too late to get started on the 48, that is for sure. The best part is that they are always there can be enjoyed anytime. I hope that your grandchildren get excited about hiking as well, I started hiking with my parents at a young age and just fell in love with the Whites. Please stay in touch and let me know how your adventures go!
I make it an annual event for me to hike Lafayette which I just did it yesterday and my legs are still pretty sore lol. really cool to see an HD video on this.
Thanks for watching, Klint! The clouds felt like a tsunami, the way they approached so quickly and how they were hitting the mountain peaks and splashing every which way. It was definitely something you don't get to see very often!
Wife and I just moved to southern NH, last fall while living in NC I made it a goal to hike Lafayette so we could look down on where we got engaged at Echo Lake. Really glad I stumbled across this video! Cannot wait to get into the other hikes from your videos. The drone shots are incredible! Thanks for doing all of these!
Tommy, welcome to New Hampshire! And that is so cool that you were engaged at Echo Lake. Such a beautiful spot! Have you achieved your goal of hiking Lafayette yet? And thanks so much for watching my videos and for commenting. It really means a lot and although I haven't produced a video or have been that active lately, I plan to get back into it in the near future as my schedule allows. See you on the trails! -Joseph
@@GettsWild Thank you! I have not hiked Lafayette as of now. Moved up to the Granite State just over two weeks ago, and with my lack of hiking experience, I am not tackling that loop until the weather turns! I look forward to watching more adventures of you and Dexter! I will make sure I say hello if I run into you at Great North (it is on my list of breweries to visit). Thanks again!
Thanks, Paul! You're going to love the hike. Try to get started early morning and go during a weekday to minimize the crowds. It will be awesome anytime you go though!
Amazing video!!!! Great views! I was gonna hike Mt Madison, but after seeing your video I’m ready to hike both Lafayette & Lincoln! Thanks for the upload
Joseph, I just watched your (this) vid and I wanted to compliment you. The images you documented, the drone footage, insightful content and your interaction with your tennis-shoe bud made for an amazing vid. I think I'll subscribe and go watch a few more. P.S. beautiful dog
Thanks so much Sam, I'm really glad that you enjoyed it! I haven't put out a video in quite some time. But I hope to get back into it in the future. Definitely subscribe so that you'll see those videos once I finally do make them. Cheers 🍻
Awesome video...loved the clouds and view from Lafayette! I'm doing this section with friends in July. Thanks for giving us a heads up of what to expect!
Awesome, Dawn! You will have so much fun on these mountains, and I'm glad that I am able to help prepare you and your friends for them 🙂 Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. Also, if you're planning on hiking other 4,000 footers in NH, I'm making a video to showcase each mountain. I have a few other videos already posted on my channel, and I will have new videos each week 👍
Getts Wild looking forward to watching all your videos on the Whites! My friends and I are flying in from Southern Cal to hike for five days across the Whites. We will be staying in huts and lodges along the way. We start on Falling Waters Trail and will end at Joe Dodge Lodge. Being West Coasters we are learning all we can through video and blog so we know what to expect. Thanks for posting these!
That's so great, Dawn! I was just in Cali this past September doing the Rae Lakes Loop through Kings Canyon National Park with my family. You can expect a video about that experience in the near future as well. It was an incredible trip!
Thanks so much, Jonah! I think in part because I haven't uploaded in a long time. I'm hoping that changes in the future though because I love putting together these videos. Thanks for watching man! 🙏
Second time I've seen a video of yours where I took the same route. Mine was on 5/23/18. Trails were clear, no blowdowns, sunny in the 60's on the ridge- Heaven! Agreed- the ridge walks are the best. Pat on the head and a backscratch to Dexter! Gotta love dogs- you can spend a second mortgage on toys, and they'll go for the stick....
Ha! That's so true. No matter what, they love their sticks. I attempted to do a pemi loop on 6/2/18 this year, and the stretch of trail from Mt. Liberty to the top of Little Haystack was ALL blowdown and extremely tiring to navigate. You're lucky you missed that section while doing this loop! Thanks again for watching 🙂
Your video brought back wonderful memories. Mt. Lafayette was my first major hike. I spent a whole summer day on the trail with friends, using the Greenleaf Trail to reach the summit. We had a fun time, though by the end I was exhausted, with my legs and feet feeling like jelly due to the steep ascent. Nevertheless, I’ll never forget how amazing it was to take in the serenity of the White Mountains at such a high altitude.
Chip Rollinson thanks so much, Chip! I use the DJI Mavic Pro. Shoots 4k video and does pretty well in the wind. It's compact which is why I got it because it fits easily into my hiking backpack and doesn't weigh too much either.
Could you give the trail head location and the exact trails you used. This hike look unbelievable!!! Thank you for sharing your experience with others.
Thanks so much for watching, Dominique and for the question! I have updated the video description to include the trailhead/parking info and the specific trail intersections and distances. Please let me know if you have any other questions before you do this hike, but I hope that you have a great time and really enjoy it. It is absolutely breathtaking. Thanks a lot for subscribing to my channel as well, I appreciate the support 🙂
If u want some easy and beautiful hiking I suggest Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor Maine. If u want more of a challenge definitely tackle this hike it's awsome but tough. Another fairly easy one is Mt Haystack in VT as well as Mt Manadnock, NH or even Mt Greylock in MA. Another easy one with a rewarding view of Mt Greylock is Spruce Hiill in Savoy Mtn State park
Just watched this, planning on hiking this in two weeks, but.. doing this at 21 weeks pregnant, 😂 (was an active hiker before baby) hopefully I can waddle up and down this at a decent pace 🙏🏼 but great video!!!
Each dog is different, but Dexter's paws are fine unless there's snow and ice. For winter conditions I use Mushers Secret to protect his paws, and you could use that in the summer too if you wanted. In the summer, the heat is a bigger issue since he's long haired and doubled coated. Just need to make sure they get enough rest, water, and monitor them. Otherwise, enjoy the hike, it's fantastic!
Thanks Jack! I use the Manfrotto Be Free tripod. It's lightweight and works really well. My main camera is the Panasonic GH4, my drone is the DJI Mavic Pro, and I also have the GoPro Hero 5 Black.
Thanks so much, Glen! I have the DJI Mavic Pro. I got it because it's lightweight and folds up so that I can fit it easily into my backpack. And Sean wasn't having a good time until we got to the summit of Lafayette. He knew that it was all downhill after that! He did really love being above treeline in general, I think. And who couldn't!?
Hey Mike, at the time of me filming this drones were just starting to become mainstream and the laws were not concrete yet. Since then drones are prohibited from being flown anywhere along the Appalachian Trail, which part of this loop includes. I am unsure of what laws have been passed since, but I'm sure you could find out through some quick Googling. Hope that helps!
Hey Craig, I would give yourselves about 7 hours just to be safe, though I think you could do it in less. Better to put aside the day though and take your time. As you can see from the video, it's absolutely stunning up there and you'll want to take it in and enjoy it. Best time of the year to hike it, too!
The loop is the most common way that people hike Mt. Lafayette, because you are able to enjoy hiking along the "knife's edge" Franconia Ridge and you are able to hit three peaks in an 8.9 mile hike. The most direct root is via the Old Bridle Path (2.7 miles) which will take you to the AMC Greenleaf Hut, and from there you continue along the Greenleaf Trail for another 1.1 miles to the summit of Lafayette. Retrace the route to go back to your car. Total round trip is 7.6 miles with a total elevation gain of about 3,300 feet.
Awesome, you won't be disappointed! The parking fills up very quickly this time of year, especially on Saturdays. Try to get to the trailhead as early as possible, or at least before 7 a.m. to make sure you get a spot. People end up parking along the shoulder of Interstate 93, but it's illegal and not something that I would recommend. Have a fun and safe hike! Let me know how you like it after you do it. Cheers, - Joseph
