- 3 Days of Hammock Camping, Hiking & Backpacking on the White Mountains Presicat Loop.
For this 3 day, 2 night summer backpacking trip, I’ll be hiking a 30 mile backpacking loop in New Hampshire’s White Mountain National Forest. I call this the Presicat loop because it’s comprised of the Carter Range and Wildcat Range on one side, and the northern section of the Presidential Range on the other.
This route creates a grand tour of the northern White Mountains with a section of the Appalachian Trail and Mt Washington as it’s centerpiece. Along the way we’ll hit 9 major summits (NH48’s) and 8 subsidiary peaks, while racking up 15,228 feet of elevation gain on some pretty rugged trails.
For sleep and shelter I chose a minimalist ultralight hammock camping system. This allowed me to get my base weight down to 9 lb. Notable gear can be found at the end of this post. Or check out my

No permit is required to camp in the White Mountains, but the trailhead I chose did require a self payment of $3 per day. Rules & regulations for backcountry camping can be found on the USFS website here. bit.ly/2YASpiq
Trailhead Used: Great Gulf Wilderness Trailhead, N44° 18.675′ W71° 13.228′

Imp Trail
North Carter Trail
Carter-Moriah Trail (Appalachian Trail South)
Camp along 19 Mile Brook Trail
Head 1/8 mile down 19MBT to get outside of the forest protection area around Carter Notch Hut. This isn’t really a typical “campsite” at all. It’s a random spot in some very dense and uneven terrain. I used a hammock and managed to find some properly spaced trees after a bit of searching. A tent in this area wouldn’t be realistically possible from what I saw. A small stream crosses the trail nearby for water.

Whew! I'm exhausted just watching you hike that, and I'm on my couch. I think I need a cheeseburger.
😂 same!
That was a big one. Sat up with my daughter till 10pm watching this one. She wanted me to comment and say she likes sourpatch kids as well 😝👧
It’s a good day when a Sintax77 feature length video appears! 😁🙏🏻
No better day than that...I agree.
no shit i was just thinking today where is sintax ?
Totally agree. Even 3 years later! 😊
I'm like a kid on Christmas morning when a new Sintax77 vid comes out.
I can't imagine that trip without trekking poles! That was epic!
Hiking in the White's sure does bring back memories. Hiking is all about the experience, take your time, slow down, and enjoy the moment, remember it's the journey NOT the destination.
You know I was thinking the other day that I don't have enough of pain and soreness in my life. This hike would definitely fix that.
I'll gladly give you my pain.
you make that all look so easy. I am humbled watching this
Another EPIC white mountains video. Awesome. You’re one of the best youtubers out there.
I agree. Him and Frozen from Outdoor Adventures are my 2 favorite. I also like when Trail Slippa is with Sintax
No one beats luke with the outdoor gear review though.
@@MichaelRichards983 i dont care for lukes vids i like any winter video so i watch his and am subscribed but not my fave at all
Adrian Macklin hes my favorite and the quality so dam good. I like that hes no nonsense unlike most.
@@MichaelRichards983 his winter videos are really good juat wish hed use a hammock ( thats my current obsession) instead of military gear . brings back too many shit memories when i see all bdu and olive drab and i get kinda down
Absolutely stunning scenery. Every step of the way this was an absolute pleasure to watch. Enjoy that cheeseburger youve certainly earned it.
Impressive accomplishment. Even in my thirties, I would have scheduled 4 days for this loop, if not 5. I've always thought the Whites were easier to walk in winter than summer, simply because one gets to choose foot placement instead of having it dictated by the rocks. You managed to hit most (Ammonoosuc is probably the hardest, but the ends of the Wildcat Range are no joke) of the most difficult hiking of the Whites in this loop. Happy you got the weather to play ball. Well done.
Hiked up and down Tuckerman Ravine to the Mt. Washington summit with my family as a teen. Both hips replaced at 19, and obviously those beautiful hikes are over.
But you gave me a gift by filming this. It is by far the closest I’ve come to hiking those trails again, and it brings deep joy to my life! Thank you!!
Crazy amount of free elevation gain in 3 days. Great trip. Thanks for sharing
Great hike, great video. Beautiful views.
Dude your video description alone makes you the freakin man.... great video
I’ve done both loops but not together and not filming ..... you’re the man. Great job completing the loop and filming in a way that brought us along with you. Thanks!
Congrats, you have to have some Goat DNA to do these White Mountain Hikes. Thanks for taking us along. Great achievement, great video. :-)
Wow what a trip! Thank you for sharing! So beautiful! Poor sunglasses! Glad you were okay!
❤️
Hey syntax 77, just wanted to thank you for all your videos taking the time to make them. I suffered a spinal court injury back in 1994 playing amateur hockey, and have been a C45 quadriplegic since. I loved hiking in the outdoors and just discovered your videos this spring. Since now I pretty much am bedridden these have been a godsend for passing the time and the next best thing to actually hiking itself. Stay safe and keep those videos coming!-Mike from CT
Great video! That was a very, very tough journey. You were very fortunate to have beautiful skies and beautiful clouds for the summits. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful video, jeez dude that was hardcore, very impressive.
As usual, superb filming and editing to convey this adventure!
Let's not forget all the great information in the description. Thanks Sintax77
Hi Sintax77 - it was great meeting you up there in the Wildcats. Thanks for the good wishes - they worked like a charm, as I am happy to report that I completed my thru-hike of the AT up on Katahdin on August 18, 2019. Best regards - and keep 'em coming, greetings to Sarah and Denali! Sparky
PS: Give my regards to
Hey, Ray. That's awesome to hear. I was wondering when you would get up there by. Sounds like you made good time :) Congrats!!
Love the Whites and yes any kind of weather can pop up.Years ago we had 18" of snow and 100mph winds up there on Columbus day
Wow! Enjoyed that so much.
This was a good one. Spectacular views and summits mixed with some tough trails.
OH DUUUUUDE!!!!! I’m sitting here quarantining at my condo up in Summit County, Colorado getting over COVID and I just got to the part where the chili dog place is closed. NNNOOOOOOO!!!!! I’m living vicariously through you and I totally FEEL for you.
Kinda wonder if Sintax77 narrates to himself when cameras off
DUDE!!! Those bolder's crazy, looking like they could be tumbling down at anytime, Time to get the FUNK out of there for sure." ;) I enjoy all your videos on this channel. Your wife is FUN when she is with you on a hike....LOL.... Hope to see another with your wife out and about, it's fun.
Great video Sintax, very well done. Enjoyed as always!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Did most of this hike in the '70's in winter, on snow shoes with big frame packs! You going with 9 lbs is genius!
Watching you trying to get across those rocks views and vistas
Absolutely stunning
the one part where you slipped you said there was no trails I love the fact that you just pointed the camera up and lo and behold there is a trail blaze
Love this video excellent job young man
You even managed to put in a little bit of geological knowledge
I know, I never noticed that until editing, haha. I swear that must be the only one out there. Never seen light blue blazes in the Whites either. Maybe it was the normal dark blue when they last blazed it 30 years ago :)
Beautiful wilderness!! 👍👍👍👍
Thanks for sharing!
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Took me three days to watch this. Now I'm exhausted! Great trip!
Thank you for another great video. Those rocks are humbling.
you park your jeep for three days with the soft top on wow, trusting.
I thought that too. I live near Lake Tahoe, one of my biggest concerns is leaving my truck for several hours, let alone a few days, to go on a hike.
New to your videos and just getting into backpacking. Really excited to do my first overnight hike! Learning a lot from your videos and the awesome views you experience.
Thanks, Tucker. Congrats on getting into backpacking and enjoy that first hike! Glad you're finding the vids helpful.
Great video. Seen you on the Whites so much live vicarious through you.
True "OG" outdoors video guy... have loved these videos for along time. Thanks for another good one!
Epic adventure. Thanks for documenting and sharing it.
Wow, epic 3 day'er hike Sintax! Great hike, congrats!
Congratulations on finally completing this loop. It looked incredibly tough! 👏🍔
And thanks for the spoiler 😉
@@jawsper1 sorry. I didn't know that people read the comments before watching the video. I'll not make this mistake again.
Thank you for sharing. Great video. You have done it. Great work.
Wicked video as always. Congrats on completing the loop.
Congrats on accomplishing that strenuous hike and thank you for sharing it with us. I so enjoyed it and am glad you are safe.
Love the extended length videos! Gonna sit down and enjoy this, been waiting a whole month! secretly excited to see what your camping meal will be! ^^
3rd times the charm! Impressive and beautiful hiking. Thanks for another great adventure!
Wow thanks for sharing the video, awsome adventure you did.👍
Great job and a beautiful video! What an adventure.
Rode my motorcycle up Mount Washington a few years ago. It was pretty amazing.
It always makes me happy to see you do this loop and your videos. You have done a great job and I appreciate how your narration goes along with the story telling. Be safe and can't wait to see the next one. It's Cheeseburger Time!
Congrats on successful completion, that route looks impressive in both beauty and butt kicking!
Great video. Loved the scenery and appreciate all of your efforts on that obviously strenuous trail. Well done Sintax
George from Ct. I've done some hikes in the Whites. It's good to see someone take on a challenge and put forth the effort.
Beautiful shots! Very glad you were able to conquer this milestone!
Wow that's a lot of hiking. And when I saw the cars on the top i was like oh man you can drive to the top? I would have driven my car.
Love that loop and the White Mtns. in general. Spent many good trips there backpacking.
These videos are the best! Thanks and keep them coming
I have watched a lot of your videos and have enjoyed them immensely, but this has been one of my favorites. Loved the scenery and the adventure. I’ve always been interested in the Whites. Thanks for your hard work in sharing this!
Great video. That place is so amazing!!
Awesome loop and kudos to you for making it all the way this time! Your video and editing is really fantastic. Thank you.
Great video for sure nice to see no serious injury like last time . But those 1 eyed glasses I think that was best part of end of video. Keep up awesome videos
This video is still amazing to me. I’ve probably watched it 3 times in it’s entirety. I get the greatest backpacking agendas from you in The White Mountains. I may be able to do this in two trips. Thanks again!
Thanks for posting this. I know I'll never do another hike like this, but I used to do hikes like this when I was younger, and it's really nice to see so much of your hike. Kind of feels like I'm there. Thanks again.
I grew up in NH but have lived in NC for the past 20+ years. It's nice to see home again. Great trip, excellent video, amazing visuals. Thanks for taking me along. Cheers and God Bless you!
Good job! You made it to the top! I love NH!
Wow, watching you hike makes me tired, the terrains you have to cross with all those rocks and hold the camera at the same time! Great job! I could never do that, when I walk I have to sit and rest and huff and puff, then try it all over again. Beautiful scenery . Thanks for doing what you do and sharing it with us! Nothing like solitude. Keep em coming! 👏👏👏👏👍👍👍
WELL done my friend! Great hike! Great video!
That was a stellar adventure!
Congrats knocking out that loop man. Great video!!
Not Bad! I completed a Hut Traverse in the White Mountains. It was 8 AMC huts, 58 miles, just over 22,000 feet of elevation gain and i completed it in just under 35 hours, with no sleep. It was definitely one of my hardest hikes yet, oh and i almost forgot to mention i did it ultralight, with just 3 soft water bottles and carried all my food and rainshell with me. Got my Strava data as proof ;)
Awesome video all around! That's one hell of a loop
Dang, that's awesome you finished the loop man. Nice views up to there too.
Great hike Sintax! Thanks for bringing us along. I'm way too old for that kind of hiking. Most of the time I was thinking "That can't be a trail. Is that really a trail?".
I loved this loop as two separate trips so I could relax and enjoy it and it was still hard lol
Congratulations, well done !
Another great video..I cant stop watching once I start..that happens with all of your videos...great job on recording...
Hello my hiking friend, thank you for the tagalong. You continue to do a wonderful job of filming and narrating. You really keep your viewers informed as to what is going on. Take care out there on the trail. All the best to you and your family. 🤗
Thanks, Ronald. I'm glad you're enjoying them!
You never disappoint when I'm searching for 2-3 day hiking locations/routes. Dolly Sods, Grayson Highlands and now this one, all on my list! Also greatly appreciate the time you put into including downloadable GPS data, it's invaluable.
Yesss just what I needed to end the Thursday off
Superb hike, great video
your videos are getting better and better man! long but entertaining this one is. also, love that shot of your one eyed sunglasses at 1hr38min lol...we've all been there
Ok thanks.Really enjoy you and TrailKillas videos. You guys got a fan in Wichita Ks!
You're the man!!!!! I did the AT in '98 at age 52. I was naive and didn't realize what I was getting into. I went in the Whites blindly. I was fortunate that I could stay in the huts without reservations. I was also fortunate to have had excellent weather. The memory of my sore feet and aching body are back after watching this wonderful production. Thanks for your effort.
That's awesome, congrats on doing the AT! I ran across several NOBO's on this trip, it was pretty cool.
Oh man I could feel your pain in the end. Tough rough loop. Neat to see all tne hikes Ive done. Glad to see what sphinx trail looks like, I will be sure to avoid that one. Congratulations.
It’s difficult to see how steep it is till you turn around , looking back . The path looks narrow in a lot of places too . I really enjoy watching your trip, thank you 🙏🏻
I’ve backpacked all those sections but not continuously. YOU are a beast! The scale and elevation and footing is far far more challenging than video portrays. Well done! Sure seems the Sphinx option would not at all work with a tent.....
Thanks, it was great but definitely a challenge :) There are actually some nice flat areas near the intersection of Sphinx and Great Gulf trails that would make for some decent tent camping. 19 Mile Brook Trail near Carter Notch though - not so much, haha. Perhaps theres a hidden gem in there somewhere, but I didn't see anything tent worth. Not legally outside the protection area at least.
sintax77 Thanks! I have never been to that part of the Sphinx but yea, the area around Carter Hut is brutal. We swam in that lake and it was glorious
sintax77 Hey and I miss Mail Call - mountains of it. Do we need to start sending you more cool stuff?
This will be great!! I really enjoyed watching years ago the classic Sintax Presicat Loop video. 👍😀
Yeah, I had to dig way back in the archives for that flashback sequence, haha. I really enjoyed getting back up there for some old school hiking in the whites ;)
@@sintax77 Great job with this video and congrats on doing the complete Presicat Loop! 👍 I laughed so hard at the end when you hiked out with the broken sunglasses. 😂 This will rank as one of my favorite videos from you!
Congratulations!!
Nice! Always have enjoyed your other "presicat" videos. Looking forward to this one 👍
Oh him air quoting it makes sense to why I couldn't find it online
the rocks on those bare summits are the result of millions of years or freezing and thawing with ice getting into the granite expanding and contracting and cracking the rock into the boulder fields you see today... apparently the whites where taller that the Himalayas millions of years ago
Nicely done, congrats! Very entertaining
Nice trail action. I spent my weekend Discgolfing, it was excellent. But I need to get back on the trail!
Heck yeah! You did it and you did it right! P.S I love the Glen Boulder Trail 👍
You can actually sit there and sleep with lions, coyotes, bears, big foot and aliens all around?? Damn dude I'd be freakin out over every sound!! Lol!
Love that Garmin handheld! Awesome hike! I hike the Whites Sunday, can't wait...
Nice! Enjoy it!
Ever wake up in the morning from a night hike in awe of the place you just spent the night? Maybe not here but any hike anywhere?
Actually, the first time I attempted this loop was kind of like that. I dropped down into Carter Notch after dark and didn't even realize what that pond area looked like until I woke up the next morning. It was pretty cool :)
Very very good video. Entertaining, informative, very very good
Great hike. Thinking I might plan a similar loop but staying at the huts.
Another great video. I was wondering what you’ve been up to. Love your Jeep!
