  • 3 Days of Hammock Camping, Hiking & Backpacking on the White Mountains Presicat Loop.
For this 3 day, 2 night summer backpacking trip, I’ll be hiking a 30 mile backpacking loop in New Hampshire’s White Mountain National Forest. I call this the Presicat loop because it’s comprised of the Carter Range and Wildcat Range on one side, and the northern section of the Presidential Range on the other.
This route creates a grand tour of the northern White Mountains with a section of the Appalachian Trail and Mt Washington as it’s centerpiece. Along the way we’ll hit 9 major summits (NH48’s) and 8 subsidiary peaks, while racking up 15,228 feet of elevation gain on some pretty rugged trails.
For sleep and shelter I chose a minimalist ultralight hammock camping system. This allowed me to get my base weight down to 9 lb. Notable gear can be found at the end of this post. Or check out my
Full printable gear list with weights & links on LighterPack
    lighterpack.com/r/vfcwc4
For an easier read, more info & downloadable GPS data, check out my blog post:
    www.sintax77.com/hiking-the-ul...
No permit is required to camp in the White Mountains, but the trailhead I chose did require a self payment of $3 per day. Rules & regulations for backcountry camping can be found on the USFS website here. bit.ly/2YASpiq
Trailhead Used: Great Gulf Wilderness Trailhead, N44° 18.675′ W71° 13.228′
    Route 16, Gorham, NH
Peaks Bagged - In order, * indicates NH48 majors:
    Middle Carter Mountain*
    South Carter Mountain*
    Mt Hight
    Carter Dome*
    Wildcat Mountain A*
    Wildcat Mountain B
    Wildcat Mountain C
    Wildcat Mountain D*
    Wildcat Mountain E
    Gulf Peak (Slide Peak)
    Boot Spur Mountain
    Mt Washington*
    Mt Clay
    Mt Jefferson*
    Adams Five
    Mt Adams*
    Mt Madison*
    Trails Used, Day 1:
From the lot, cross Rt 16 to Camp Dodge Rd
Head up Camp Dodge Rd. At the fork, go left towards the shed. You’ll see a herd path to the left of the shed. This is the Imp Cutoff Trail.
    Imp Cutoff Trail
    Imp Trail
    North Carter Trail
    Carter-Moriah Trail (Appalachian Trail South)
Camp along 19 Mile Brook Trail
Head 1/8 mile down 19MBT to get outside of the forest protection area around Carter Notch Hut. This isn’t really a typical “campsite” at all. It’s a random spot in some very dense and uneven terrain. I used a hammock and managed to find some properly spaced trees after a bit of searching. A tent in this area wouldn’t be realistically possible from what I saw. A small stream crosses the trail nearby for water.
Day 1 Mileage: 8.7 Miles miles
Day 1 Gross Elevation Gain: 4,717’
    Trails Used, Day 2:
Backtrack on 19 Mile Brook Trail
    Wildcat Ridge Trail
    Glen Boulder Trail
    Davis Path
    Lawn Cutoff Trail
    Tuckerman Ravine Trail
    Trinity Heights Connector
    Gulfside Trail
    Mount Clay Loop Trail
    Gulfside Trail
    Sphinx Trail
Camp near the intersection with Great Gulf Trail
Room for several hammocks or tents. There are other pockets of decent camping nearby as well. Water is readily available.
    Day 2 Mileage: 11.9 miles
Day 2 Gross Elevation Gain: 6,805’
    Trails Used, Day 3:
    Backtrack on Sphinx Trail
    Gulfside Trail
    Mt Jefferson Loop Trail
    Gulfside Trail
    Osgood Trail
    Great Gulf Trail
Return to Great Gulf Trail parking.
    Day 3 Mileage: 9.5 miles

Impressive accomplishment. Even in my thirties, I would have scheduled 4 days for this loop, if not 5. I've always thought the Whites were easier to walk in winter than summer, simply because one gets to choose foot placement instead of having it dictated by the rocks. You managed to hit most (Ammonoosuc is probably the hardest, but the ends of the Wildcat Range are no joke) of the most difficult hiking of the Whites in this loop. Happy you got the weather to play ball. Well done.

Hiked up and down Tuckerman Ravine to the Mt. Washington summit with my family as a teen. Both hips replaced at 19, and obviously those beautiful hikes are over.
But you gave me a gift by filming this. It is by far the closest I’ve come to hiking those trails again, and it brings deep joy to my life! Thank you!!

That's awesome, congrats on doing the AT! I ran across several NOBO's on this trip, it was pretty cool.

Oh man I could feel your pain in the end. Tough rough loop. Neat to see all tne hikes Ive done. Glad to see what sphinx trail looks like, I will be sure to avoid that one. Congratulations.

It’s difficult to see how steep it is till you turn around , looking back . The path looks narrow in a lot of places too . I really enjoy watching your trip, thank you 🙏🏻

I’ve backpacked all those sections but not continuously. YOU are a beast! The scale and elevation and footing is far far more challenging than video portrays. Well done! Sure seems the Sphinx option would not at all work with a tent.....

Thanks, it was great but definitely a challenge :) There are actually some nice flat areas near the intersection of Sphinx and Great Gulf trails that would make for some decent tent camping. 19 Mile Brook Trail near Carter Notch though - not so much, haha. Perhaps theres a hidden gem in there somewhere, but I didn't see anything tent worth. Not legally outside the protection area at least.

sintax77 Thanks! I have never been to that part of the Sphinx but yea, the area around Carter Hut is brutal. We swam in that lake and it was glorious

Yeah, I had to dig way back in the archives for that flashback sequence, haha. I really enjoyed getting back up there for some old school hiking in the whites ;)

@@sintax77 Great job with this video and congrats on doing the complete Presicat Loop! 👍 I laughed so hard at the end when you hiked out with the broken sunglasses. 😂 This will rank as one of my favorite videos from you!

the rocks on those bare summits are the result of millions of years or freezing and thawing with ice getting into the granite expanding and contracting and cracking the rock into the boulder fields you see today... apparently the whites where taller that the Himalayas millions of years ago

Ever wake up in the morning from a night hike in awe of the place you just spent the night? Maybe not here but any hike anywhere?

Actually, the first time I attempted this loop was kind of like that. I dropped down into Carter Notch after dark and didn't even realize what that pond area looked like until I woke up the next morning. It was pretty cool :)
