    When you have a Passion to Learn a Language or Discipline the Learning Experience is Exciting, Invigorating and Exhilarating.
    I am from Malaysia and I am of Chinese descent. I am educated in the English medium. I started learning the Chinese Language (commonly called Mandarin) in grade 4 every Saturday morning for 3 hours under the Pupils Own Language programme. After the first year I stopped because the text book used in the second year was just too advanced for me to catch up. Along the way I learned the Chinese Language at my own pace in my exposure in my daily life. Finally at age 55, I came across a Chinese Language Institute that is started by Chinese Muslims from Xinjiang. I studied for 6 years and logged more than 200 hours of Class together with another 200 hours of self study. I am still learning the Chinese Language at my own pace today.
    Learning the Chinese Language to me is a Joyful and Happy Experience and is still my Hobby. The Chinese English Dictionary I use is like a Toy to me. Each Chinese Character is a Pictogram formed by various components. Its like Lego pieces been put together to form a Character. Wonderful Experience in Discovering how its pieced together.
    I am still enjoying learning the Chinese Language. Its my Passion and Hobby. Learning the Chinese Language enables me to have a greater and deeper understanding of Chinese Culture, History and my Roots.

      It’s important to distinguish the government from the people. One can acknowledge that Chinese people have an old & proud civilization, are generally hard-working & disciplined, value family & community, education, and good food…and are moving their country forward at lightning speed after being held back for centuries. *and also* their government is authoritarian, has implemented a dystopian social credit system, censors media, holds a million Uigyhurs in concentration camps & is committing a slow genocide against them, disappears critics, steals intellectual property, is selfishly trying to conquer the South China Sea, destroyed democracy in Hong Kong, and seems eager to forcefully “reunify” with a Taiwan that doesn’t want to be part of them.

    From what I understand about ancient Chinese literature, nothing what she taught in class seemed like it. It rather seemed to be an English conversation class.

      The basis of traditional Chinese literature (e.g. 四書五經,老莊,史記,唐詩三百; the Four Books Five Classics, the writings of Lao Ze and Zhuang Ze, the Book of History, 300 Tang Dynasty Poems, etc.) is classical Chinese (文言文) as opposed to colloquial Chinese (白話文), and she demonstrates no such expertise. There’s a noticeable contrast with how teachers are treated and viewed in the east vs. west in that they’re to be respected and even honored. That aside, Kudos for Dr. Sophia for sharing this video and yes, I think she breaks the mold in that anyone can teach a subject, even Classical Chinese, no matter their background, so long as they pay their dues and receive the credentials for it and more importantly, realize academia never stops, you’re always learning!

It is a nice and probably necessary addendum to the course to widen the students' awareness and perspectives and to encourage critical thinking. I hope the typical Chinese teaching style will evolve to be more like hers because the students can enjoy and also learn more. Most importantly they can be more relaxed and creative. Learning should be rewarding and a thirst, rather than mostly a punishing and difficult experience.

    中国文化博大精深, 比如一首宋词的背后往往有很多的典故, 如果对中国历史没有很多的了解会非常难懂这些典故, 更不会体会到这首词的意境和那种心灵被触动所带来的的震撼。 我很难想象一个外国人在中国教中国古代文学,这需要很大的勇气, 如同一个中国人在美国教英语一样有挑战。所幸的是中国学生会比美国学生宽容的多, 中国学生很少会因为老师的中国话口音而去抱怨和为难老师,对老师的尊敬和理解也是这位美国人能继续教下去的原因。

    as a Chinese i dont think her knowledge about ancient China culture is better than this students....it is just impossible...
    i think the reason why she have so many students is this students are just curious that a foreigner teach ancient China culture and want to see what's going on here...that's all

    • @RayCromwell
      @RayCromwell 3 года назад

      Why is it impossible? She graduated from Sichuan University. This seems like a racist Chinese attitude. I would never say for example that a Chinese teacher could not know more about ancient European culture, e.g. Greek, than the students, even Greek students. Or that a non-French teacher could not know more about ancient French culture than a French student.

    • @李荣-n7s
      @李荣-n7s 3 года назад

      @@RayCromwell Because if you know the Chinese primary and secondary school curriculum, you will know: Chinese students have learned Chinese ancient culture since childhood.. I don't know how long this American teacher has studied Chinese ancient culture. Judging from her Mandarin, she is not very fluent and has a strong foreign accent. So I guess it's not very long. You know, those students have studied Chinese ancient culture for more than 12 years, not only in school, but also outside school..
      so easy to say that others are racist.. I think it's also a kind of racism

    • @RayCromwell
      @RayCromwell 3 года назад

      @@李荣-n7s So why then would Chinese college students need to learn anything about Chinese culture in college? According to you, they already know everything by finishing high school? Isn't this course, whether it is taught by a Chinese professor, or an American girl professor, a waste of time?
      Or do you mean that a Chinese professor with a Masters or Phd in Chinese culture could teach them things they didn't learn in middle or high school?
      So you're making the assumption that a foreigner with a Masters or Phd from a Chinese University in Chinese Culture can't know anything that isn't taught in primary school?
      Americans learn detailed and nuanced perspectives on Western culture in college that they do not learn in primary school. Often, the college level courses teach a refutation of the simple minded patriotism taught to children, because history is often far more nuanced.
      Why do you not think this is a racist view? What if I told you that all of my foreign Chinese professors in college were inferior to the American ones, because they were not fully fluent in English.
      I had a Mainland Chinese Economics teacher in college. How can a Chinese teacher with imperfect English from a *Communist* country teach Americans about Capitalist economics?
      Do you see how this kind of stereotyping is racist? You saw a *few* minutes of a video that was obviously designed to just introduce this teacher's personality, and your extrapolated it to the whole curriculum she taught, and most of your assumptions are purely because she is 老外。
      And no, pointing out racist implicit bias is not racism.

      well Knowledge is endless. Learning a certain knowledge for 12 years does not mean learning it all. Therefore, it is logical for universities to continue to study. The question now is: is a foreigner's knowledge of ancient Chinese culture really higher than that of Chinese students who have studied for 12 years? (I don't think so). If not, it will become a low-level teach high level .. This is obviously illogical
      Cultural knowledge is different from scientific knowledge. I think cultural knowledge mainly depends on quantity. The cultural knowledge taught in universities is not necessarily higher than that in primary and secondary schools. If this foreign teacher doesn't study Chinese culture as much as Chinese students, her knowledge of ancient Chinese culture will be inferior, whether she studies in primary school or university
      Economics has nothing to do with language. Chinese economics professors do not need to understand English, but can also learn economics in Chinese in China. But culture has a great correlation with language, because you are unconsciously learning culture in the books you usually watch, TV, talking to people, etc. If the teacher is not fluent in Chinese, it can be imagined that she learns less cultural knowledge in her daily life, so I think the reason why Chinese students who are fluent in Chinese have higher ancient cultural knowledge than the foreign teacher.
      Yes, I do think she is inferior to Chinese students in ancient Chinese culture because she is 老外. As I said earlier, I won't repeat here. Is this racim? I don't think so, because: 老外 is not a race. As long as she comes from a foreign country, she hasn't lived in China since she was a child, whether white, black or East Asian.. Even if he is Chinese, as long as he grew up abroad when he was a child and has not received Chinese Education... I think their ancient Chinese cultural level is not as good as that of Chinese local students

      @@RayCromwell By your same logic, I should also ask why are there degree courses and post-graduate courses in English language or English Literature, when both are taught in High School or Secondary school levels?
      She was just probably teaching one credit unit of the Chinese Literature course - comparative studies, cross-cultural studies, critical thinking skills or something similar. Good for developing more awareness and appreciation of the subject. The video title is a click-bait.
