👴 Old Composer Reactions 🤘
There’s not many groups that I can say after 20+ years of making music still manage to surprise me, but Within Temptation just feels like they’re ALWAYS evolving and it’s just amazing! This song feels like a cumulation of so much of their history-the grand symphonic sound of The Heart of Everything meshed perfectly with the anthemic, industrial sound of Resist.
All the singles they’ve put out in the past few years have been so unique and just stunning in their quality, and I’m SO excited for the new album next year if this sound is the direction they’re going.
If you do more of them soon, I’d recommend Shed My Skin. It has a truly *massive* cinematic sound and features two male vocalists from Annisokay. It was the single that came out before this one and was also preceded by Entertain You and The Purge.
ATMOSPHERE.. When talking about the keyboard contribution I think the word you were looking for was "such a powerful atmosphere"
Please do "Within Temptation - Promise". It is one of the first song I have heard from them, and her voice in that song is truly angelic.
Boring music with female vocals.
Great band, she is a self taught singer too which gives her a more unique style too.

I have been aware of this band and listened a bit on and off for 20 years now, but I will give it to them that they have become better and better thought the years. Instead of just re hashing their hit singles from the first album they keep evolving and staying relevant. I’ve gone from thinking they are ok to really being a fan the last few albums.

Within Temptation have a great producer, he always nails it it… I think he’s with the band since early 2000s, and has managed to shape all the musical changes in every album.. and he is also co-writer of most of the songs, such as this one btw…

It's nice that they reverted on their "pop-ization" trend... I like this significantly more than much of their more recent stuff.

Your comment about where metal is heading now I think you're on to something because it seems to me that it is becoming less symphonic heavy metal and more synth metal.
It fills in the space of an orchestra ethereally and can even mimic orchestra and chorus, But it cost a whole lot less than hiring an orchestra for record production. Besides that, Within temptation has a Morse all along and after their heavy symphonic phase, They had Gone retro rock and collaborative performances, But now appear to be more emphasis on post apocalyptic type Metal, So mood is extremely important.
most "symphonic" metal is done with synths or vst's, very rarely has it ever been done with live orchestras, especially for the cd recording. there are some that have done it, but its rare.

Knowing one of the few songs I might like is locked behind a patreon pay wall lessens my interest to tune in to be honest. It's like waiting in a line all day for a ride only to find out that when you get to the front you needed to buy the upgraded pass. But that's is just my loser opinion. This band sounds like evanescence and apparently then went on tour together.

Can't say I ever got into Within Temptation, a bit too poppy for me. This song sounds like it could have been an Evanescence hit from 2005 (that's not a compliment). If you are interested in some more traditional symphonic metal I highly suggest some of the late 90s early 00s bands like Tristania, Theatre of Tragedy, Sirenia, and Penumbra. Over time, even though bands went from super heavy and dark to slightly pop or electronica, so stick with the first five albums of Tristania, first three of Theatre of Tragedy, first three of Sirenia, and first two of Penumbra. Therion is also a classic band that started as death metal, evolved into symphonic metal, then evolved again to something else.
Might try listening to WTs first album. A bit doomy and goth but a lot of symphonic elements too. After that they got more and more into mainstream but not as radio friendly as Evanescene i'd say. But there are similarities for sure, that's why they do a tour together.

Yeah, kinda sucks that all reaction channels ignore Therion. Instead of it they react to Nightwish or Epica over and over again. Or even worse like Within Temptation, lol.
Listen to the The Silent Force and The Heart of Everything. Their best work and amazing symphonic metal. Their later album do become more mainstream but they are still nice.
tristania, theatre of tragedy, etc arent symphonic metal, theyre gothic metal. they may use a violin, but thats a far cry from symphonic. haggard is the only TRULY symphonic metal band, with live classical musicians as members of the band. most bands like nightwish, epica, within temptation, visions of atlantis, etc just add some symphonic elements with synths to round out the sound. theres a few bands that add full symphonic sounds, though, such as therion, lacrimosa, and mechina. but thats rarer.
i agree, though, would love to see him check out some classic gothic metal.
