      it's basically losless file format. JPEG is compressed and pre-processed, RAW is losless and gives you oppurtunity to improve image on your own with use of software (like for example Photoshop).

    • @peoplez129
      @peoplez129 6 лет назад +17

      This is exactly why I chose the B700 over the P900. The extra zoom capability of the P900 is nice but not dramatically different, and extra zoom isn't going to mean anything if the shot isn't properly exposed. Meanwhile, I can under expose a shot with the B700, and fix it in post processing. I mean you can take shots that are soo underexposed they look almost pitch black, then bring the exposure back up in post processing and still have it be usable. But it's more useful for photo's that only have minor bad exposure. RAW can mean the difference between saving a photo or having no workable photo at all.
      I absolutely hate in-camera sharpening and effects, you have way more control in photoshop. When people say RAW is lossless, most people don't realize exactly what that means. Well with JPEG, it means that all the light data is scrubbed. JPEG stores the colors of an image (and does some processing to average them out), while in RAW each pixel doesn't just have a color value, it has a more precise color value (able to distinguish more colors) and a brightness value too that affects colors and helps with post processing.
      Even if you're an amateur, RAW can help bring your images to the next level.

    • @peoplez129
      @peoplez129 6 лет назад +8

      I think it's really a shame you didn't exhibit the difference of a properly post processed image from the B700, or show the actual pixel per pixel difference in the size of an object. All things considered, the P900 only actually makes objects 5% larger than the B700. Those images that looked better on the P900, could easily be matched or outdone by the B700 if post processed correctly, and I'm not talking extensive processing either, just a minute or so worth of work. In Photoshop RAW you can even set custom defaults for most of the settings, meaning the post processing will be applied as soon as you open the RAW file. So what I do is set the general range of things I want, like lens correction, defringing, sharpening, etc.....then I tweak it from there, and in a minute or less I can have the image fully post processed the way I like it.

    Great Video - thank-you. I may be able to contribute here as my wife and I have just spent 3 months birding in Singapore using both of these cameras on a daily basis. I use the P900 and she uses the B700, so we have many instances of near identical shots taken with these cameras, and often at maximum zoom. My conclusion, after studying these, is that the B700 has a very slight edge in image quality, on account of the BSI-CMOS sensor. It is only slight, but this and the 20 MP (versus 16) enables cropping to the same zoom level as the P900, with approximately equivalent final results. However, as you point out, the build quality and ease of zooming are considerably better in the P900. Both of these cameras are awesome though. The image stabilisation capability of both is truly remarkable, enabling steady shots at maximum zoom. I even have centred hand-held shots that are not blurred by movement way into the digital zoom range, although when you leave the optical zoom domain into the digital one, the image begins to deteriorate, as you would expect. One thing that you didn't mention was the 'burst' capability of each camera. The P900 wins here with 7 shots/second, vs 5 for the B700. If anyone intends to use this feature (highly recommended for birding or sport at maximum zoom), one big negative of both of these cameras is the almost non-existent buffer, so that the camera is inoperable for several seconds whilst the 'burst' images are written to the card. That is one big difference from a DLSR, although no DSLR can come anywhere close to the image that can be produced by either of these cameras at maximum optical zoom, in good light. In poor light it's a different story. Both the P900 and B700 can have problems focusing in poor light and the image from both tends to deteriorate due to noise from the high ISO that the small sensor requires. The larger aperture of the P900 doesn't help much in this regard, as it only applies at the short end of the zoom, so the two cameras are fairly equal in that regard. Weight and size-wise, the B700 wins hands down. It packs approximately equivalent capability into a much smaller lighter package. If you want a hugely capable camera light enough to throw in a rucsack just in case you need it, get the B700. If you want to shoot all day with a camera that has a really professional feel and is a sheer joy to use, need the continuous shooting rate, don't care about RAW or movies, then get the P900. Hope this helps someone.

    I watched your video a few times to help me decide which camera to get for my son (I use the P950 myself). I ended up ordering both (used) and returned both due to the condition being much worse than the seller described. Here are my impressions, in case anyone is still interested in 2021! lol
    B700 seems to have a better build. The P900 had loose fittings, not sure if it's due to wear. But the flash, dials, wheels were all shaky and had some give.
    They both supposedly have the same quality of viewfinder but somehow the B700 one looked a little better. The P900 one wasn't a perfect rectangle; it was strangely curved. But neither of the viewfinders even come close to the amazing one on the P950.
    I love the size of the B700. It's so compact, and feels beautiful in the hand. And even fits in my pocket!! B700 button layout is also superior. Two Fn buttons instead of one. The P900 has a dedicated button for connecting to the phone. What a waste of real estate.
    The P900 pros are longer zoom (not that much longer in daily use, IMO, not worth making a decision just based on that), wider aperture (I think that is important) and a threaded lens. The B700 doesn't have a threaded lens for filters. You can buy an adapter though. I think the image quality and optical stabilization of the P900 is a little better. I didn't test extensively since mine arrived stinking of cigarette smoke. :/ All I know is that the low light photography is really bad on the B700, while it's great on the P950.
    If I had to choose one, it would be the B700.

    For a person who's more interested in astrophotography like me, I highly recommend the P900. I first bought the B700 and was pleasantly surprised with its zooming capabilities. Little did I know about the P900 at the time. After watching some P900 review videos, I got rid of the B700 and bought the P900. I know the B700 has RAW, 4K function and 20 MP, but I love my P900.

    I was looking for a Nikon superzoom for the eclipse to run video side-car to my Canon 400mm still camera. I seriously considered the P900 because *zoom* right? Then I read the specifications for its images. No rivals? Really? It shoots *jpg only* and no 4K. The B700 shoots RAW and 4k video and... seriously how can you say the P900 has no rivals? The *only* thing it has going for it is the increased zoom. RAW image quality will absolutely crush any jpg ever taken so... ?

      @peoplez129 6 лет назад +2

      Not exactly. I remember doing the math a while ago, but basically, while the zoom makes objects ~20% larger, due to the resolution difference, the actual pixel makeup of an object is only about ~5% larger on the P900, making the P900 almost trivial. It does mean the P900 could technically deliver sharper images by default, especially at its maximum zoom. But post processing with RAW on the B700 can deliver superior sharpening and other superior post processing techniques.

    • @ragicalshorties
      @ragicalshorties 6 лет назад +1

      I would add to that, the lens of the P900 isn't exactly sharp at it's maximum "zoom". Not to mention for video the B700 can actually record in 4K, kinda giving you a 2x crop option without loss of quality vs the P900's 1080p
      To be quite honest the P900 is more marketing fluff than it can actually deliver, heck my FZ1000 with I.Zoom+digital zoom can even compete with it... The upcoming P1000 is quite interesting though...

    chyba lepiej poczekać na następcę P900, oby miał RAW... w ogóle powinni zacząć wreszcie używać większych sensorów do tych megazoomów, 1/1.7" zrobiłby lepszą robotę, a skoro Nikon opatentował nowy obiektyw o jeszcze dłuższej ogniskowej niż w P900, to z większym sensorem współczynnik zoomu nie byłby aż tak drastycznie niższy...

  • @andreawars

    i've always heard anywhere that the B700 quality picture is a little bit better. I'd prefer to sacrifice a few zooming power to a better quality picture. Anyway we are atalking about a 1 2/3 sensor size, what's needed all that zoom?. Plus as already said one. RAW pictures are another featuer in it. I think that Nikon had preferred to sacrifice some zoom to a better quality picture and better videos. Build quality i've never had hands on p900 but i trust on you as you are not the first one saying it....b700 anyway is not that bad as build quality considering his weight and ingumbrance. maibe the p900 focus better and the 2.8 f helps a little little bit more but.....picture quality i think is a little bit better anyway on b700....If i do have to give a fair rate for them. is 55% to B700 vs 45% to P900. Both has pro and cons, but to be honest, sacrifice some zoom for more quality and features it is way more interesting, and cost a little bit less. From who has a P900 is not worth to upgrade to b700, but as you said, to wait another one! I give you a like anyway for the efforts, pics and tests done. ....I'm a b700 owner

      Oby1 Oby1
      I am really trying to figure out which one to choose. Money is a think to have in mind. Where I live the B700 is €400, while the P900 is about €530-550. But I guess the extra zoom might be worth the extra cost. However, as you said photo quality is the top priority for the final result. At the moment I shoot some macros of insects and flowers, but I would like to be able to get some better macro photography and also be able to photograph a bird from a distance, as sharp as possible and with clarity! Also it would be nice to get some quality videos of the same things. I know a DSLR might be the ideal, but that would cost a fortune for me! So, to conclude, what are your views on the Coolpix B700, as you own it? Is the result of the photos actually good for clear macro photography and distant-tele photography, as well as the videos quality? The extra zoom that P900 provides sounds amazing, but if that will be with less photo/video quality then that's a think!.. I would be very thankful if you replied.

    • @andreawars
      @andreawars 6 лет назад

      B700 have slighter better detail. Off course the ISO can be set more on p900 but both work horrible after 800 for night photography.
      With Raw format you can catch details and colors that allow you to edit the pictures way more better.
      You can catch things on distance even with b700 and it is enough! I've shot a bell Tower at 12 Km but the picture came bad because at such distances any picture goes bad if weather Conditions are "best".
      You can catch the moon, and somewhere I've seen one catching the ISS space station....off course with horrible details, but let you know the power of it.
      Plus it's lighter

    • @andreawars
      @andreawars 6 лет назад

      On Google i can't find nothing about this p1100. But since a while there are rumors about the successor of the p900 and it would be for sure even better than those in this video. But for an higher price, and these camera will drop their price a few. But you must consider that if that camera will be released, maibe will be priced around 600 euros. And in that time it would be better buying a lumix fx2000 that actually cost 2000 euros, and within 1 year will drop its price a lot, but if there is going to be a difference even of 200 euros between a "p1100" and a fz2000, then the second would be better anyway.
      Because changing from a 1.2/3 sensor to a 1.7 there's big difference. Ok, not a big zoom but....for sure greatest photos on a bridge camera.
      Tra, maibe it would be better an older model with an higher sensor rather than a New one with a smaller sensor

    I have the P900. I use it for shooting birds using different settings in aperture mode , mostly using spot focus I get great pictures. I think it does a good job. Just take it out of Auto mode and learn about ISO , shutter speed and aperture settings. Sometimes I have to re- focus ( auto) but that's no big deal. The more I use it the more I like it. One more thing, most of the time I don't use the live view screen do every thing through the viewfinder even reviewing the pictures when I'm in the field. This saves on the battery and protected the screen.

      Personally I find manual focus on these camera's give a sharper image. When I shoot birds on my B700 and I want to take a really good shot, I'll pre-focus the area, or hope they stay in one spot long enough to manually focus. Never gotten an image as sharp with auto focus settings. The auto focus is decent in general though and can be sharpened good in post processing, but I've gotten images that look straight out of national geographic, where you can see every single detail of the birds individual feathers.

      M-Galaxy P1000 Vs b700:- P1000 doesn't have RAW and its much heavier, in comparison to the b700, which still has a good zooming range for it size. The b700 is lower priced, smaller and much lighter in weight, one would be more inclined use it more often, for that reason alone. Lugging around a heavier camera will take its toll on you after a few hours walking around believe me I know, having been a Professional Photographer for 10 years.

    I have b700. Now I can say if you want zoom then obviously should go through p900. You will be satisfied. Otherwise go for DSLR. Its matter in iso, sensor and pic quality. But both camera nice unless you don't want to be go professionally. Low light pic in manual mode I'm not satisfied.

    • @peoplez129
      @peoplez129 6 лет назад

      Of course low light is going to suck. The sensor is smaller than your fingernail. These are not low light camera's at all. That's when you have to decrease shutter speed for more exposure. Then the problem with that is motion. You need a much more steady hand or tripod for longer exposure. The B700 beats the P900 here because of RAW. You can slightly under or over expose a shot with the B700, but fix it in post processing. You might get more noise with a slight under exposure, but you can get blown out highlights with a slight over exposure.

    P900 is the better photo camera, B700 is the better video camera. I would have liked to have heard how the microphones sounded on each of them. The reason I use a Sony HX300 instead of my Nikon P510 is the mic has too much hiss and the focus tracking is aweful, but I keep it around because it takes much sharper photos than the Sony. Nikon's ED glass is the best on consumer grade cameras.

    THANK YOU, or should I say "dziekuje"! I've been reading reviews all day, but this answered some questions that the others did not. Like: do you get better image quality with the B700 by giving up some of the zoom length? And yours is the first review to show side by side shots with the two cameras, which shows me that NO, the B700 does not produce sharper images, and in fact I preferred the brighter P900 shots in some cases. That helps me out so much. But also seeing the two cameras side by side helps put the size difference in perspective. I'm still a little torn and need to look into some other cameras, but the questions you answered here helped me out so much. Thanks again!

    Really wanted the extra zoom but after testing 1440mm to 2000mm i thought i could probably live with 1440. Its not like 600 on my old camera to 1440, that's pretty big,like double the size on your lcd.
    Got some beans and tuna out of the cupboard that weighed almost the same as the p900 and decided on the spot to get the b700 instead :)

  • @MrElloAnton

    P900....Not 83x. Only 27x.
    This is info for all newbees.
    The camera states that focus length goes from 24mm to 2000mm.
    That is true.
    Therefore total magnification is 83x (as 2000/24=83).
    However the human eye sees objects with 75mm.
    Therefore true magnification is only 27x (as 2000/75=27).
    So for a camera marketed as a ZOOM camera it is wrong to state 83x.
    Unfortunately (in this price range) there are no other cameras that go beyond 2000mm.
    And sadly all manufacturers (and sellers) start counting their magnification from 20,22 or 24mm.
    Because of this widespread lie i wrote this to all newbees. I lost a lot of time figuring out why my camera does not give me 83x, because I looked into the camera and looked outside and saw that the bloody camera zoomed backwards more than forwards. So only when I zoomed past half way on the camera did I see the same size as I seen with my eyes. It pissed me off.

    • @MGalaxy
      @MGalaxy  6 лет назад +2

      It's not a lie. Camera definetley has 83x optical zoom (24-2000mm), how human eye sees maginifcation have nothing to do with camera zoom, but with human eye. What would you want? Camera manufacturers to provide human eye zoom equivalent? I don't see a point. Word would change, not zoom.

    • @MrElloAnton
      @MrElloAnton 6 лет назад

      In order to obtain 80X zoom you would need a 75-6000 lens :-) take your camera, put an object on a floor such as a shoe and then zoom in til it reaches the size you see with your own eyes.

    • @MGalaxy
      @MGalaxy  6 лет назад +1

      Okay but I don't see a problem with this camera and Nikon. It's generally standard to provide zoom information in such way.

    Guy's please....these are "Superzoom"-camera's...with tiny sensors...(only.about...6mm x 4,5mm)..if you want quality-picture or video....you got to get a camera with "APS-C" or "Full Frame sensor"...These sensors are about ..."APS-C" = 23mm x 15mm ..and.."Full Frame" = 36mm x 24mm....the bigger the sensor...the more light it can catch...a Superzoomcamera with bigger sensor would need a much bigger... "too big"..lens..that's why Superzoomcamera's have tiny sensors...and that's the reason why they are only good in brite light...it's as simple as that...

But if i buy a p900 i don't have to think about expensive lens, bc it does it job. And also i wonder with this camera, can i get money from it picture, if the results of its picture is good enough, i would prefer to buy this camera than a lens that cost too much.

    I'm currently asking myself these questions
    Do I need 4k ? No and are big files anyway will take up alot of memory and will most probably be doing more still photography than videos
    Do I need raw support ?
    Is 335g alot of difference ?
    Do I need the extra 4MP ?
    Do I need the extra 23x zoom ?
    The B700 is smaller and lighter to carry around
    The P900 main selling point is the extra zoom and 2.8 f-stop better focus
    Like the idea of taking photos of birds and planes and astrophotography but most likely birds
    Hmmm

Plus if you crop a pic to the p900 size you get a little extra zoom. Its a nice camera. Might have to get the P1000 or whatever they will call it if its better.

    • @peoplez129
      @peoplez129 6 лет назад

      Not true. The difference you're seeing is probably because the P900 applies all of the post processing on the camera before it goes to JPEG. But a well post processed RAW image on a computer from the B700 will be superior due to more advanced techniques and controls available in post processing programs on the computer. The P900 still does a decent job though, especially if someone just wants a usable image without putting any work into it. But without RAW, it also means that if you don't get the ISO/Aperature/F-stop/Exposure settings perfect, you could get a bad unusable photo that can't be fixed.
