This demonstration takes a look at a cut sequence involving the trio of rocket scientists who were originally intended to be found alive in Half-Life's launch center, the location where Gordon launches a satellite in the chapter On A Rail.

I kinda wish Half-Life had more moments of scientists recognizing and mourning their fallen coworkers, this makes them feel more human
At least Half-Life 2 had "Winston's been hit"
Shane Smith that was in OP4 and we had more human activities in Blue shift with scientists playing games, eating, and doing Laundry
Shane Smith Winston!!!!!:(
We got more scientist using dying animations instead lol
And poor Lazlo...The finest mind of his generation....to come to such and end.... ;-;
Actually in HL2, sometimes, when Freeman dies, the citizens in his squad will actually say things like "Freeman! Don't go into the light!" or "Dibs on the suit". I've actually seen it happen, it just isn't common
I think I prefer this sequence over the final cut, assuming the scientists would've had some dialogue and maybe even have helped launch the rocket. I've always felt like it'd have been interesting to see a little more of the science team's survival and involvement with stopping the invasion.
In this scene specifically I think seeing the scientists successfully strike back a little would've amplified the rocket's significance a bit, like a small accomplishment to celebrate before delving back into some of the game's more lonely segments.
Luigi You sound like one of the valve devs in the half life 2 developper commentaries
they probably removed it because you needed the scientists to open the door for you
That would've been cool.
This was a wonderful read.
It does add even more story through the few dialogue/interactions which I think could have been pretty cool. Even though the Lambda team (and rocket) is mentioned before, it would have been nice to see them launch the rocket, and let a brief sigh of relief that they're making progress, and wishing the Lambda team the absolute best in their mission to eventually close the portal.
A lot of weird things never made it in this map. For some reason, the source VMF has a large elevator that doesn't fit anywhere in the map.
This is being covered in the full On A Rail chapter article on the OverWiki which is currently being wrapped up. The WIP article can be viewed here: combineoverwiki.net/wiki/User:Barnz/On_A_Rail_(chapter)

It's interesting how after all this time, not all of the cut content was found. Good find.
To be fair, "cut content" is a very relative term. Some consider anything that ended up as someone's discarded brainfart during a meeting "cut content" or anything that was altered or removed for simple balancing reasons at some point during development.
People will look at random developer placeholders and tests and shout on internet forums THIS IS HOW THE GAME WAS ORINGINALLY MEANT TO BE!
Fucking idiots.
@Geeeee8 that's exactly why I'm tired of the so-called "HL2 beta"
especially when there are assholes who assume that cut = better (and there always are)
The idea that cut content is good is highly justified due to the fact that many times, content is cut simply because the sample group they brought in for playtesting didn't like it or didn't interact with it in the way that was expected -- regardless of whether or not the playtest group is representative of their target demographic or even video game players as a whole. That also happened with Half-Life. Quake is another example, although Quake was not due to playtesting and it was purely due to Carmack and the rest of the staff thinking that Romero's original idea wasn't "safe" enough. It was originally going to be a first person action RPG, hence the Gothic themes. Honestly, I can't blame Romero for wanting to leave after that, especially since the team at that time was easily talented enough to take on almost any project. Sorry for that tangent, I just wish that Quake could have been something truly different even though it's still an amazing game.
BlueShit199 did you play sven co op today on some wacky server with sound in chat my name was barney calhoun i quess i changed it couple of times
Funnily enough we are getting more new info on HL1 then we got on HL3 ever since.

Happy Limbo 3 (Sometimes referred to as Happy Limbo 3: Lower the Bar)
If they had kept this in, it would had made the scientists look less incompetent.

That damn song.
Also in the retail disc version(published by sierra) the hologram globe in the control room bleeds yellow goo like the aliens when you shoot at it
The only thing that seems off with this recreation is the retinal scanner still looking screwed up (constantly on and blinking), which makes sense in the finished game since the door is open. I also assume the original scene would have had dialogue from the scientists specifically for this encounter, but you obviously can't recreate that.
I've talked about this with Barnz, and the retinal scanner here in the launch center is identical (meaning the map brushes and entities were directly copied from one to another) to the scanner found in the lobby of the biological research lab in Questionable Ethics. The one there is also constantly blinking yet initially locked. Whatever the purpose is of the pre-blinking scanners, it's not meant to reflect the unlocked state of its accompanying door.
Maybe those scanners were in the process of being unlocked, but then the scientist on them was shot or had to run?
@@staryoshi06 I think that is true, the scientist was trying to open the door but the soldiers broke in and he tried to run away while he was operating the retinal scanner.
The scientists have a "scared" state, where they cower and won't help you do anything and sometimes, they get stuck in it. They should react to you killing the soldiers outside the door and that could break the game, because you need to get through that door to continue. (Also, would they panic when they see the soldier's dead bodies and get stuck in a "scared" loop?) I also had problems playing the game where, in about 1 out of 10 play throughs, the scientist you chose to help you couldn't navigate his way to the retinal scanner.
it's like glass is an indestructible force in the half life universe
There's plenty of Glass that's breakable.
func_breakable_surf
Hehe
Bulletproof one is pretty stable tbh
In Blue Shift you encounter HECU marines shooting a scientist named Harold through glass who tells you to find Dr. Rosenberg.
Research before making a comment.
I like this scene, because it gives a lot of depth to that dialogue of the grunts. It seems that they had to kill one of the scientists, who probably tried to fight back against the HECU. However, one of them would refuse to kill the other one, due to it being an inmoral action to him. He would probably start a debate on what to do, and that's when Freeman would show up. A really interesting thing that they cut.
I just thought the dialogue was added in after the fact.

should really make a Half-Life:Directors cut, add in some little scenes like this into the main story i also read early on in development Half Life had multiple endings compared to the two options we get at the climax. I think it'd be neat to have a cut of Half Life that was still in the retail universe but had alternate routes and maybe a few endings where Gordon either gets out of Black Mesa, reaches a potential dead end and perishes or is recruited by the G-man elsewhere. it'd be pushing Goldsource to it's true potential.
A good idea.
Tbh, some of ideas are uncut in HL1-MMod (like vortigaunt ressurection or water in the beginning of 'Power up') but of course it's only a part of all cut content
At 1:15, they say: "I didn't sign up for this shit. Monsters? sure! But civilian? who ordered this operation?"
They got hearts too.
i feel bad killing them
Well, that one does. Who knows about the others.
The dude clearly hates killing innocent people because he thought his order was to kill monsters but once he arrived he was given orders to kill innocent people which was something he wasn't expecting same goes for adrian shepard if the helicopter he was in was never destroyed he would've been also killing innocent people because his ordered to do that and then he may even would've been killed by one of the innocent people who are now fighting back may have killed him too we know one of them a dude with glasses
They just got done executing multiple scientists lmao
@@shyguy85There are 2 soldiers, so for all we know only one of them was responsible for killing the scientists while the other was conflicted as to whether or not the whole thing was even justified
it breaks my heart to see that scientist kneeling and mourning the death of his fellow scientist
I was thinking of some Voices for this scene. Here's my thoughts:
*S1:* Thank God, a member of the science team! When we heard the gunshots, we locked the doors almost immediately. They were trying to get in for almost 2 hours, but thank heavens for the bulletproof glass and the reinforced doors, otherwise it would be our doom! You should meet the others, we are all that's left of this division.
*S2:* If your looking for the launch button, we can open the terminal to it. It's right next door. We locked it manually here in the command center because they were trying to break in to disable the launch. You can ask one if us to open it if your ready. The head of the division, Magnusson is In the back if you wish to speak with him. But let me warm you, he can be kind of rude.
(Optional Chatter)
*S3 (Different VA):* So your Dr.Freeman. It's a miracle you survived, especially with that Hazardous Environment Suit. We will hold out here until we get some actual help who can deal with some form of escape. But thank you for helping us, especially defending our rocket. Good luck on your mission. We would tag along, but most of us are not experienced with weapons. Take what ever you need from us, but in our circumstances, we are not in your debt as it is the last thing we need, now hurry along. We have not got much time. (Optional chatter) And to be truthfully honest, I was preparing a decadent Beef and Potato microwave casserole before this whole mess went down, and only to hear from one of the interns who was going to deliver it that it was horribly burnt before this went down, I am not in a good mood. Now hurry along, before more come and make this a even worse situation.
*S1:* Oh, Mark...He was only 2 weeks from Retiring...
That dialogue is awesome
Poor mark
Oh Mark, finest mind of his generation, to come to such an end...
I think the first few lines are accurate but I doubt they would of named a scientist that only appears for one room. Here's my alteration:
*S1:* Thank God, a member of the science team! When we heard the gunshots, we locked the doors almost immediately. Those guys were trying to get in here for almost 2 hours, but thank heavens for the bulletproof glass and the reinforced doors, otherwise we would be doomed!
*S2:* If your looking for the launch button, we can open the terminal to it. It's right next door. We locked it manually here, in the command center, because *they* were trying to break in to disable the launch. You can ask one if us to open it if your ready.

But thanks for the input.
i have a box where the cover shows soldiers holding scientist by the throat,i guess that too didn't make it in to the game

Half Life Restored adds a bunch of this cut content back into the game.
This is now my new favorite channel.
A sequence with surviving scientists would be less goofy than "Ooh, a big red button! I should press it!"
...The downside is that it would be less goofy.
Well, Gordon knows at this points that he has to launch the rocket. Someone told him.
Yes, Gordon is told about the rocket and launch site by a guard right before going down to railing system at the very end of Power Up chapter, after killing Gargantua.
Everything is well explained in Half-Life, at least in case of what player is supposed to do. Well, as long as you understand what NPCs say to you. It was definitely easier in HL2, though, as you get subtitles there and usually it's easier to read than listen.
@@ThePangia also in half life there's friendly fire, so that's an issue too
@@rey4874 there is no enemy near said guard, only a few barnacles and you can't even move barney there cause there is a barrier gate behind him and it's too narrow for him to go past it
You're a fucking gaming historian. I love it.
Cut content that is actually better. No surprise then! Nice to see this kind of thing after nearly 20 years.
Interesting, really shows how times change.
I just listened to Military precision and you bring it in again god damn it
Love how the 357 magnum shots line up with the Freemans Mind (and Freemans Mind 2) theme song.
Its called Military Precision

same, I thought I clicked on the wrong episode
TryHardGamr Ross Scott still makes great content
Love the stuff you're doing man.
I wish they had kept this, and maybe added a security guard hiding with them.
Another fun fact from video from you. You're the best Half-lifer!
The scientists being executed scene is in uplink so, as you get into the area you must hear the soldirrs talk about it but also can see it happen you need to save atleast one scientist for the retinal scanner to launch the rocket. I would imagine atleast one of them is killed I would also guess the burning vorts were meant for the area too from uplink as was the bombtrap gag with the TNT.
I always feel like watching Freeman's mind after listen this song. :)
great video as always

Here plays my favorite soundtrack and my favorite part ^_^
I wish we could have a proper version of this with custom voices and the scientists opening the door for you instead of you leading a scientist to the panel. It was probably what was going to happen but valve scraped it.
Is nobody gonna talk about the perfect timing with the title card?
Wow. They should have kept this instead of leaving them dead.
man I love your videos they're so informative and we'll made :)
Mind blowing. Maybe the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.
Oh no that's so sad. I don't think I ever noticed the scientists had been executed
I do think they removed that scene because it seems to be unpointless, at leats how it is shown here, anyway all the scientists were able to press the button for themselves, Freeman would only have to rescue them in that case.
I thought a bug was the reason this never happened in the final game.
The miment at 2:0i where the scientist is blessing his dead collegue in his last journey is truely hurting.
It's really a person who is almost complete stranger to death. Like me and all of us used to be until February 24th.
if you think logically the reason why valve remove this sequence is because it make a lot of sense :
- Why didn't the scienetist launch the rocket already instead of waiting for gordon arrival
- Lets just say they have to wait for gordon to attach a tracking device on him, but that would make the military job so much easier, cause they could just kills all the scientist and disguised as a fake sciencetist than attach their military tracking device
+ but how the military gonna kill them, they are in the safe room with eye scanner
- in half life uplink the military liteally broke down a door using a blowtourch
@@krowta2062 uplink was a literal half life demo, there is no later thing in other half life game, also the first part, you seen to misunderstand me, its just a theory, you don't have to be so aggressive about it, gee
WE MISSED YOU MARPHY
That is how the launch scene should have been.
So this is where the Cut space sky box would have come in!
How about the hidden elevators visgroup in the computer room? It seems that there was originally more to the player path, perhaps with the scientists, before launching the rocket.
Such a nice guy.
They most likely cut this because there was little reason to just escort a scientist a few feet to open a single door. If you compare this to escorting the scientist in Questionable Ethics you have long stretches of hallway that you have to navigate while protecting him from HECU/headcrabs.
Problem: The HECU. Furthermore they could of added useful things such as a first-aid kit.
"I didn't sign up for this shit. Monsters? Sure, but civilians? Who the hell ordered this operation- MOVE. IN!"
This seems interesting. Kinda wish this made it in. Of course, I would have preferred it if the level had more to it.
How are you always so up-to-date on these things?
Song name: Military Prrcision
Good idea and cut lable D
Hello, Fluttershy...
I hate the fact that Gordon Freeman keeps violently shaking the pistol.
Problem: Extremely important person who clearly knows what they are doing cannot open a door, even to get to their lab.
Problem: The HECU. Furthermore they could of added useful things such as a first-aid kit.
But it would looking really strange, that scientist lets any unauthorized person (like the player) to launch the rocket.
Did you even play Half-Life? The player is a scientist just like everyone else. The scientists know him and it's an emergency situation

Good video my friend =)
this certainly was a good ending
Well, even if more npc interaction is interesting, the final cut makes more sense - why would freeman had to go there in the first place, if there are scientists who would launch the rocket themselves. Still, there are hecu commandos roaming, guess the scientists could've been cut off then.
Problem: The HECU. Furthermore they could of added useful things such as a first-aid kit.
