This is an excellent explanation on what Vocal Rider does and how it is best used for vocals. I've been using it for a while on dialogue editing for podcasts and it's a godsend for podcast editors like me. Combining this with Clarity vx, I almost don't have to use a gate anymore, but the processing time on Clarity can be a monster when bouncing out an hour long chat. My question to you is, what plugins, in what order, would you mix and process a podcast? How would you set up a music sidechain on ProTools for adding theme music? What would your template be for a podcast. I've been doing it one way for years and I would love to have an update in skills and best practices for podcasting from you specifically. You are one of the only ProTools RUclipsrs who actually know how to teach this stuff properly.

Thought I’d share - Just tried this (first in the chain) side by side against Waves Maxx Vol (just raising the lower level comp then dropping the lower level gain accordingly) & feel like Maxx Vol won. I know it’s comp, but since it’s only lower level it’s super transparent

Tried this. The Waves NS1 plug-in will help suppress noise in the recording phase.
Realize it's probably important for the performance to be captured with the artist/instrument mouth aligned with the microphone capsule/diaphragm. It's obvious but a skill for beginner performers to learn. Then, experiment with creative mic placement later.
Poor transient performances become more obvious after following these steps; limiter, eq, compressor, vocal rider.
It's relevant to capture accurate transients first before aiming for percise transients (probably with a sony c800G or higher quality sound reproduction microphone). I'm just saying.
A plug-in like transgressor 2 will help engineers isolate transients. Download your favorite songs and the demo of this plug-in. Turn off the sustain and listen to just the transients of your favorite song.
My philosophy; Sometimes, there is less transient information, but it sounds better.
For a project, Decided to re-record artist and will extract and edit transients of vocal performance by deleting and lowering the volume of transients for a finer tune.
Some transient spikes are so loud and some just low-end thumps, so I hope this will inspire the nerds to edit and be concerned about transients before vocal riding. 😅

Cause using vocal rider on multiple VOX tracks uses up my CPU so fast, and I noticed it has an automation feature but is there a way to “COMMIT” the Vocal Rider and then just use your vocal chain plugins on it after? 🤔

    • @LixienXIII

Before. The whole point of Vocal Rider (and this tutorial) is to make the vocal less dynamic so your compressor doesnt have to work as hard.
And yeah, use 2 compressors so you dont have 1 compressor doing all the work. But again use your ears, if it sound good to you with one then you dont need a second one.
