    This concert film was played once - ONCE - at AMC on 42nd in nyc. It was almost an impromtu Rush concert with fans from all over the tri-state area attending, AND I bumped into the violin player from the show, John Dinklage (Peter's brother) and he gave an autograph.
    It's truly the most beautiful song. Painfully bittersweet, as life often is.

    The Garden is an allegory for a person's life. A garden needs tending, nurturing, protecting and love for it to blossom and grow. Failure to look after the garden can lead to ruin and instability. Success or failure, rich or poor, happy or sad, at the end of the day, you are your biggest critic on how well you tended to your garden.

      Well said, JeromeDukes! It turns out to have been Neil Peart's parting lyrics (last song on Rush's last album) on his own life, which was well and truly lived to the fullest. The metaphor describes how one should evaluate one's short time, and contains one of the most beautiful and profound stanzas I've ever heard: "The future disappears into memory/With only a moment between/Forever dwells in that moment/Hope is what remains to be seen." RIP, Mr. Peart!

    This is one of Rush's simplest but for Rush fans sentimental songs. Their last song, on their last album. While they toured a few years more, Neil Peart wanted to retire to spend time with his second family but was sadly struck down by cancer. Three masters of their intricate musicianship and incredibly deep lyrics from Neil. Their music changes through the decades. Tom Sawyer & Spirit of Radio are must listens as are the live versions of Xanadu, Working Man, YYZed & La Villa Strangiato.

    To end a 40 + year career with this song represents a band who ended on the very top of their game and not relying on decades old successes. With the possible exception of the Beatles, I can think of no other band ending at their peak rather than playing beyond it. Knowing the tragedies that neil had endured and had yet to face gives a melancholy and somber mood of this song. But if listened to properly and in context, what a map towards being a good and decent human. Something every metric said he was.
    I shall never hear this song without getting choked up. I truly miss these guys.

    The lyrics were written by Neil Peart (drums) for the last Rush album 'Clockwork Angels' in 2012 - a concept story record about the travels of the 'Watchmaker' in his world... The album concluded w/ 'The Garden'... which depicts the 'Watchmaker' settling down in a home and tending to his "garden"... Perhaps, Neil Peart was referring to his final destination in life and caring for the people and things close to him at home.
    It was a parallel to Neil Peart's life after being on tour w/ Rush since 1974... not to mention his 2 years on his motorbike after the tragic deaths of his daughter Selena in 1997 and 1st wife Jackie a year later... He remarried around 2000 and welcomed a daughter some years later... Peart returned to Rush in 2002 and fully intended to end his tenure w/ the band after their 2013 tour.
    However, Peart was urged to complete one last Rush 40th anniversary tour in 2015 before announcing his retirement... He spent the last years of his life being a husband... raising his daughter... Neil Peart was diagnosed w/ cancer and quietly passed away in 2020.

    In the mid to late seventies, there were Zeppelin fans, Boston fans, blondie, Ted Nugent, REO Speedwagon, Cheap Trick, BOC, Van Halen, Pat Travis, AC-DC, and Aerosmith fans (among many others). Then Rush started going from a warm up band, to a headline band. Music critics hated it, for Rush didn't fit the aforementioned mold. After seeing all these bands, Rush was the only band that truly inspired me. After FTK tour in 1978, I bought a drum set. Rush outlasted, outplayed, outdid, every band I'd ever heard of in this great musical time period. Weird how they just played music and forgot about all the BS that comes with the industry. What a timeless, Majic, fucking bunch of individuals that never comprised their craft. If only we could all be like them...

    The song was the conclusion of the Clockwork Angels story which spanned the whole album where the main character looks back on his life. It was influenced by the novel 'Candide' by Voltaire

    Hey Maddy, nice to see you've tuned in to Rush. I know you will enjoy the ride. Everything Rush did in the studio is the same as their live performance. All three; Geddy, Alex, and Neil (RIP), are masters of their art and instrument. They are the best band for the last 40 years (and the soundtrack of my Canadian youth) that the world has yet to experience.

  • @daveterret3958
    @daveterret3958 2 месяца назад

    You're not thinking too deep, there's a lot to think about here, as in most Rush songs. This album was a concept album that was built as a steampunk riff off of Voltaire's Candide. On the last page of that novel, the main character says, "One must cultivate one's garden." In context, this is the philosophical conclusion: Take care of the things you can take care of in life, and keep the rest from bringing you down. The drummer and lyricist Neil Peart apparently wrote a whole series of novels as a back story to this album, in collaboration with an established sci-fi author.

    One of the great song to show off Geddy Lee ([vocals, keyboards, bassist]. One of the bands songs that really shows off Geddy's voice is the "Spirit Of Radio". The drummer Neil Peart was considered if not the greatest rock drummers of all times! He also wrote all the band's lyrics. To see his greatness, search U tube for his |Live In Frankfurt drum solo. It's 9 minutes long and his drum kit has like 70 plus pieces and he uses everyone of them. Oh and they hold the 2nd place record without a line-up change at 41 yrs. 1st place is The Rolling Stones at 60 yrs and counting.

      Neil’s daughter and wife died in 1997/98. This song was released in 2012 on the “Clockwork Angels” album which was a concept album of a young man’s life adventures in a Steampunk world. “The Garden” closes out the album and his story. (And as others said, is the group’s very last song of their career. Their final tour was in 2015, their first together as a trio was 1974!
