I'm saying this since the remake of HQ was released. But they would've to change the Space Marines design, including the enemies, to something not WH40Kish, though that shouldn't be a problem.
Talisman is one of those games where you just have to go along for the ride and laugh at the highs and lows along the way. It's been a fair few years since I last played!
When I started playing D&D in the 80's, I had to get the Dungeon game, of course, but a friend of mine soon got Talisman, with some expansion sets, and we played it a lot. I loved it. I'm glad it's still around and making a comeback.
I'm looking that the miniatures for Talisman and imagining them in the HeroQuest Board. And those plastic coins and stackable cones can be of great use. Oh and maybe... (mindlessly empties Talisman game into HeroQuest box)
I have already seen other people who plan to use this stuff for HeroQuest. I realise you are being tongue in cheek here, but these days I think it's so easy to get miniatures and gaming accessories it probably isn't worth getting Talisman for that purpose if you don't plan on playing the game too. It's also doing a classic old game a disservice.
Great commentary. Thank you 2nd original. I can't wait to see how this will play into the world of HQ. Loving that, we are getting new characters for Zargon (Morcar) to work with in the arsenal for heroes to go through. So many thoughts on this, but i guess we have to wait for more to be revealed. Yes, this is the second time the designers have had a chance to go wild on an original retail release, without being constrained by the core set contents or what was done previously. It's going to be really interesting to see what they have come up with.

Really excited for the HQ expansion. I assume the gorilla will be something along the lines of yetis and polar warbears from Frozen Horror. Really hyped to see the mini for that giant snake too. I'm sure it'll be a blast to paint. Never actually heard of Talisman before, but the cards and the minis look real good. Perhaps I should give that one a try too.
I'll be attending Gencon in early August... just in time for the new Talisman and Jungles of Delthrak... of which I'm playing in demos for both :) Can't wait.
I have so much speculation for Wizards of Morcar/Zorgon. To sum up my basic predictions, I think we may see a new related hero pack just before it releases (Original Knights came before FH, Rouge Hair before MOTM, & Monk before ATOH) Ogres Hord definitely messed with my predictions as we didn't get a Female Dwarf or a new Dwarf Class. Instead we got the Monk & new version's of the Druid so who knows what we will get before Wizards. I think my original prediction of getting a new mage class expansion & a female Wizard will likely be subverted after what we got in the last one but this is likely for the best as there keeping us guessing. I expect it will be fun regardless of what they do.
Game question for HQ since there are so many fans here. How have you gone into the expansions? Have you taken your veterans of the original box in with all of their equipment, or do you start fresh alternative characters? Do you always use 4 or do you sometimes use less? I know that some of them require “solo” quests, so I’m not talking about those.
The intention is to continue with the same heroes. For expansions like Frozen Horror you will have a tough time if you don't as the difficulty ramps. But there's nothing stopping you from swapping in new heroes whenever you want. If you have a human Zargon player they can adjust the difficulty if they need to.
Really excited by JoD my hope is that the Quests are played 1-10 with three different 2 Quest endings with different difficulty levels. You didn’t mention “HQ First Light” which is definitely a thing as it was leaked on Hasbro product placement page, there’s a few theory’s “new slimline starter box” New Expansion” or small hero pack like the Monk or Rouge. Anyway always enjoy your content especially HQ & Warhammer CC
We haven't had anything but a name for First Light. I'm assuming a character pack - paladin or similar faith build - but until I have something to say I don't worry about putting it into videos. This video was specifically about the official news out of Modena. Plenty of time for me to yap my jaw off when I have something to say, and lots of other things to cover in the meantime!
I'm happy to give Avalon Hill the benefit of the doubt for now. Hopefully anything in there will be the kind of thing regular HeroQuest players won't even realise is an Easter egg.
If we just go by the top drawing, I would say the snake might be a three by one square creature, gorilla will be more standard size like the dread warriors, and the spiders could be as small as the goblins. As for the heroes, it be interesting to see if the characters are really the same class but different races.
If I had to guess I reckon they would make the snake coiled on a 2X2 base. In the comments there are some people saying its two dwarfs and some saying its two humans. So all bets are off at the moment!
I'm not all that certain that the two heroes are different species. At first glance, it just appears the female adventurer is kneeling by the chest. That said, I would like to see a new dwarf hero character that isn't a re-skin of the base Dwarf hero.
I said in another comment it's certainly possible, and I am usually wrong, but it seems very dwarf-like to me with the overall stockiness and the shortness of the arm. And considering it's a quest that is about finding a dwarven artifact, and rumours suggest dwarves are involved in the quest line, I'm going to stick with my first thought for now.
Yea, every dungeon crawler needs giant spiders, and it's great after all this time some are on the way! They don't look as cute as the ones from Warhammer Quest, though.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring The minis for the missing quest packs were prototyped out and Lucas has photos of them. A 3d designer has been replicating them so people can get copies of their own. You can see the pics if you check out the yeoldeinn thread. The Hero Quest spiders were a bit derpy, but fit the style of the time. I love the Warhammer Quest minis, I still have all the minis but the rest of the game vanished tragically.
I was going to pass on talisman but those minis look awesome! I wonder which one will show up first for me, the endlessly wandering monk or this new expansion...

As they have done Against the Ogre Horde, we should see Wizards of Morcar (Zargon). Avalon Hill added a lot of new content to Ogre Horde, and Wizards has even fewer missions so we can expect them to add more. However, they have said they are moving away from character-specific quests like Frozen Horror.
I was surprised to see Talisman pop up in the Avalon Hill stables. But, as I have 1st, 2nd, and 4th editions, and I only got 4th because of the board which I thought looked really nice, I don't think I'll be getting this one, I think 3 copies is enough 😁 (4 if one counts the TTRPG). I'll be interested in seeing the complete board from Avalon, from the corner I saw, I thought it didn't look as good as the 4th, although there were some obvious layout differences. It is good to see more HQ modules. I am beginning to suspect I may regret no investing in the new set. But I'll will endeavour to improvise.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring yes , my favourite is the 3rd ed style(for nostalgia sake). I've bought the complete 4th ed, and my biggest complaint was on the size and quality of FFG miniatures, love the callback to the 2nd ed illustration and sculpt reflecting the art, but the size was too small and plastic too cheap. 5th ed looks gorgeous even if the art style is far away from the classics. The minis are outstanding and recall the original characters features. 9.5/10 for me
I don't think they could ever recapture the wonder of the original art, but what they have done here is pretty darned special from what I have seen so far.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring the only thing about this expansion that is a little lack luster is I already have giant snakes and spiders. So, I hope there's more to it.
You may personally have snakes and spiders, but HeroQuest has officially never had them, so I don't see that as lacklustre at all. I see that as finally getting some new classic monster types in the dungeon.
As an aside, I was really hoping for Wizards of Mor/gon, but brand new stuff is always good, too. I picked up Spirit Queen, Telor, and Ogre Horde for a combined steal of $90 a few weeks ago,I was hoping I'd get to complete the original expansion lineup. But a new questbook, and some minis and furniture is also great.
As at one point both Talisman and DungeonQuest were being produced by FFG, it's not outside the realms of possibility that if Talisman works out for Avalon Hill they may get a crack at DungeonQuest too. As long as they took it back to the original design it would be a winner.
My initial thought is it will just be a big snake. At a guess, with snakes and spiders, I think venom is going to become a bigger threat in this expansion.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Oooh maybe my players will finally be able to use all those "Ant-Poison Quills" they've accumulated from the first two expansions! 😆
Although i couldnt ever see a Space Crusade redone by AH, i do wonder if they would pay a licensing fee to have an updated version of Advanced Heroquest, or if they could do it on their own and skirt around the whole GW intellectual property minefield? That's where the big money opportunity would be looking at the prices copies go for these days.
I don't really see them ever doing that. Advanced Heroquest was very much its own game and I don't think the market would be there for it on a large scale, especially not without the Old World setting. As we move into all-new expansions like Delthrak I suspect we will start to see more and more "advanced" concepts in HeroQuest though. That way they aren't going to split their audience either.
Fury of Dracula and DungeonQuest are the two other GW titles that were at once stage all under FFG's control. I would like to see both titles get new releases.
Could this be the Avalon Hill version of the Dwarf Quest? The unreleased Wizard and Dwarf quests had Giant Spider enemies and a female Dwarf hero respectively, so that would possibly rule out a 1:1 remake of those unreleased packs if they are releasing Giant Spiders in a box that isn't themed around the wizard. The Dwarf Quest was also supposed to have a Caveworm and Stone Golem enemy type, I could see that giant snake and the gorilla filling those roles. I believe you are right though that this could be a new class being represented on the box, but I am in the line of thinking that they are both Dwarves.
I would say its very unlikely to be anything to do with the previously unreleased quest as they got in Levi Combs as a freelancer to create it and it sounds like he very much did his own thing.
Unless it's changed behind closed doors, Avalon Hill's current stance is they wouldn't do it. Personally, I don't think that will change. If I say that, maybe it will, because companies like to prove me wrong.
That talisman seems awesome in so many ways but I'm really not a fan of that board design. It looks a little small and I really dislike all that white space on the board. very excited for the new HQ expansion though!
The Talisman board has always had those border scrolls, and I think this board might be bigger than the old second edition one I used to play with. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it.
It's certainly possible. It seems very dwarf-like to me with the overall stockiness and the shortness of the arm. And considering it's a quest that is about finding a dwarven artifact, and rumours suggest dwarves are involved in the quest line, I'm sticking with my assumption for now. As I have said many times before though... I am usually wrong.
It's funny, because other people are saying both characters are human, you are saying they are both dwarves, and I think there's one of each! I just don't "read" that male character as having dwarfish traits at all. It's possibly not the best rendering of two characters if it isn't that obvious what they are.
I think you are right they are both dwarves. It’s just the male looks larger because of the perspective of the art work I think! But I would definitely say that this is the dwarf adventurer pack like we had with the barbarian and elf packs! Not sure if I like the idea of the giant spiders though 😩
Ha. Yeah. It's almost certain that even if I get this edition, one day I will end up with a second edition on my shelf too. Can't get enough of that Chalk art!
I really like what AH have done with the new version of HQ. I much prefer the setting, minis and art of the original (Warhammer Fantasy, GW, Old World etc) but they’ve done a fantastic job despite that. However, I’m not sure how I feel about this new expansion. It’s straying too far from the original setting and I don’t like that personally. I was a bit undecided about Veil of the Dread Moon for the same reason, as good an expansion as it is. But this just strays too far I think. When I look at that lizard and gorilla I don’t see HeroQuest anymore.
I think that's fair enough, but from my perspective Avalon Hill have already recreated the game as faithfully as they can with the original IP. We got a high quality new edition of the game faithfully recreating the original experience, and we have had almost every old expansion updated. At this point, I feel it's time for HeroQuest to start doing something new. The nostalgia hand is all but played out. Also, I don't personally feel the gorilla is much different to yetis and polar war bears.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I see a lot of excitement online for it, which is great for the future of HQ in general (assuming it translates into sales). I just can’t dig it myself. I think I’m too stuck in my ways as I lay here in my bed of nostalgia 🤣
Well there's nothing wrong with nostalgia. You may have picked up some subtle hints that I'm quite fond of that myself! So I can't knock you for feeling that way at all. But for me personally, I feel Avalon Hill have fulfilled the promise to nostalgia fans and now they can start breaking new ground.
Everybody thinks everything is AI these days. It looks the same as all the other HeroQuest art and I don't personally have any reason to believe it's AI, but I wouldn't know.
The cover art on the HQ expansion box looks like a Saturday morning cartoon...a far cry from the brutal, metal, dark S&S theme from the original 80s game. I can't even call this HeroQuest anymore. Nauseating.
That is the style they have had for everything released under Avalon Hill. Funny you should say Saturday morning cartoons, because I have said a number of times HeroQuest feels exactly like one of those shows with its big bad guy organising different plots and the "villain of the week" bosses.
The new version is too….American.It’s like Warcraft.Needs more spit and sawdust Old England style. Also Talisman is now £60 and has less heroes than 4th Ed
I think AI art is turning up in so many places people are defaulting to thinking everything is AI. When the back of the Ogre Horde box was revealed people thought that was AI too. I'm not saying this isn't AI art, but from what I have seen nothing has particularly stood out as having tell-tale signs. It's Hasbro though, and I am sure the art will be closely scrutinised by people with a better eye for spotting AI than I have.
I don't disagree with that - I always prefer to have the names of the decks on the reverse - but I don't think it's too bad with Talisman, as you basically only have one massive adventure deck which is way bigger than any other deck, and then a small deck of items to buy and a small deck of spells. I think the sword on the items and the eye on the spells are distinctive enough.
Well, I cannot agree with you concerning Talisman. Artwork is very generic, like AI generated. Cards are especially ugly with text poorly placed. The graphic on the board is quite nice, but its a very strange design choice to have everything directed towards the centre of the board. Basically you see the part of the board closest to you upside down. So I was excited about the new edition but now I’m rather thinking about skipping it.
Little ramble - in no way meant as an attack on you - but something that has been on my mind for the past few days. I would hate to be an artist these days. Talentless hacks steal and manipulate your work, while everyone else accuses you of using AI anyway. I don't know if Talisman is or isn't using AI - I hope it isn't - and I think being wary of AI creep is reasonable and we should push back against it, but I also think we need to be careful about when we label art as "probably AI". For example, when Deck of Lost Souls came out I saw people saying "this art is weird, it's probably AI," now for Talisman I am seeing people saying "this art is generic, it's probably AI." Again, caution isn't a bad thing, but I do think we need to be careful that we don't end up making things harder for real artists by labeling work without just cause or evidence. Of course, if someone can dig up the evidence then that's fair game as far as I am concerned and should be called out.
Just to add, second edition is still my jam. Nothing is going to top Chalk's artwork for me. I hadn't really considered the orientation of the perspective on the board. I don't dislike it - making everything face the important central part of the board does make a kind of sense - but it's certainly a departure. I will have to study a more detailed image of the whole board.
As long as the content is good, I'm happy. This is only their second try at a completely new quest pack, so I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with it.
Talisman is ok, it was never a game that had the juices flowing for me...having said that though, I do own two different editions of the game and have played it dozens of times over the years...not sure I'll pick this new edition up, however I absolutely love seeing the support these games are getting, and AH are doing a fantastic job in that endeavour...especially with HerQuest. I wish so much that the original WHQ game got such a revised treatment with the same level of enthusiasm that AH are showing for HQ...GW defiling of that magnificent game with the AoS setting was criminal, to say the least. Agreed on the thoughts about dragging other concepts into HQ that don't belong, that was my problem with the Kung Fu Monks...
If AH can do it with Heroquest………I’m confident they can do it with Space Crusade. 🤩 . Other companies have shown it can be done.💯🔥👍.
That would be amazing
That would be awesome.
I'm saying this since the remake of HQ was released.
But they would've to change the Space Marines design, including the enemies, to something not WH40Kish, though that shouldn't be a problem.
@@eldritchmorgasm4018 i would be fine with that. I would just end up gathering some 40k minature off the market to take their proper place.
They would have to change their stance from when they stated they wouldn't do it because Space Crusade leans too heavily into the 40K setting.
This is super exciting news, more HeroQuest is always a good thing!

As at one point both Talisman and DungeonQuest were being produced by FFG, it's not outside the realms of possibility that if Talisman works out for Avalon Hill they may get a crack at DungeonQuest too. As long as they took it back to the original design it would be a winner.
Ooh! Chance to use the Jungle HQ map from Lost Maps..??
Yeah. A nice jungle-themed map would really help with immersion for this one.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I'm kinda hoping that giant snake isn't just a giant snake, but like a Basilisk or something.
The BEST piece of equipment ever added to the game, surely.
Now they only have the make a new version of Fury of Dracula... 🧛♂
Fury of Dracula and DungeonQuest are the two other GW titles that were at once stage all under FFG's control. I would like to see both titles get new releases.
It will be a Banana, always will be a banana, it’s a long yellow fruit that you unzip and eat the squishy part.
It is time for Space Crusade to get rebooted.
Unless it's changed behind closed doors, Avalon Hill's current stance is they wouldn't do it. Personally, I don't think that will change. If I say that, maybe it will, because companies like to prove me wrong.
At $60 the Talisman game components seem almost like a bonus for buying the twelve minis.
You mean you would be happy to pay $60 just for the 12 board game pieces?
It's all about the cones.
Got to love cones.
I must say.. I am not entirely convinced that this is a female dwarf.. this could very well be e kneeling stout human as the one in the background.
HUZZAH!!!!
those are both dwarves, the female is down on one knee so she look smaller
It's funny, because other people are saying both characters are human, you are saying they are both dwarves, and I think there's one of each! I just don't "read" that male character as having dwarfish traits at all. It's possibly not the best rendering of two characters if it isn't that obvious what they are.
I think you are right they are both dwarves. It’s just the male looks larger because of the perspective of the art work I think! But I would definitely say that this is the dwarf adventurer pack like we had with the barbarian and elf packs! Not sure if I like the idea of the giant spiders though 😩
Idk, I still prefer the artwork on the Talisman 4th Edition.
I still prefer the art on second edition, but I think Avalon Hill have done a great job here as well.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring yep, it is not bad indeed.
You know that the old GW edition is the only one that will complete you.
Ha. Yeah. It's almost certain that even if I get this edition, one day I will end up with a second edition on my shelf too. Can't get enough of that Chalk art!
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I'm surprised they didn't do something with AoS art.
Did you see GW is trying to flog that Mount Doom game again?
@@johnmiddleton4291 I saw that pop up in the previews. I can’t believe they are reprinting it, must just have found a warehouse full of unsold stock.
They need a cleric class.
I have a suspicion the leaked "First Light" expansion might be a hero pack for some kind of faith-based character.
But is the box art AI or not? Or both?
Everybody thinks everything is AI these days. It looks the same as all the other HeroQuest art and I don't personally have any reason to believe it's AI, but I wouldn't know.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring that is because AI is used more often.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Wondering what an "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons" cartoon re-skin could look like...
Can't help it, but the art in Talisman looks like it's about 80% AI generated.
I think AI art is turning up in so many places people are defaulting to thinking everything is AI. When the back of the Ogre Horde box was revealed people thought that was AI too. I'm not saying this isn't AI art, but from what I have seen nothing has particularly stood out as having tell-tale signs. It's Hasbro though, and I am sure the art will be closely scrutinised by people with a better eye for spotting AI than I have.
so this real not AI imagery...ok
It's the real box art for the expansion.
I hate card backs without text telling which card pile is which. It might look beautiful, but its not helpful in gameplay!
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Maybe you’re right. But I liked the old school vibe of older editions.
Hasbro Herquest is starting to resemble Descent Second Edition to me. Cartoony content bloat. No thanks.
Avalon Hill are knocking everything out the park at the moment.
