- Here is my review of the Ryobi 3,100 PSI 2.5 GPM Pressure Washer with Idle Down review after having it for 3 years.
Watch to video to find out why I cannot suggest anyone buy it.
I have the same one. It works great so far. Its 5 years old. No issues yet.
Now you can buy just the pump for 110 bucks online if it fails.
I was thinking of buying this same model but after seeing your review I think I will go with another brand. Thank you for your review.
the part that guy's talking about doesn't even come with that as original equipment
I've also had the same unit for almost 3 years now and I use the crap out of it. I PW both of my driveways every spring because of all the mold and mildew that builds up every winter. I just finished this year's cleaning this last weekend and still need to get to my house. I use this machine wash all of my desert toys, vehicles, and solar panels. It gets used a lot through the year and the only problem or issue I have is the idle down function. If you are mechanical inclined, you can figure out how to adjust the cable. Other than that it's been flawless. I use pump saver (doesn't matter brand) after every use. I also run the hose for several minutes after I shut down the machine to cool the pump. I don't doubt your machine had a flaw that ended up in disaster but maybe you should have contacted Ryobi before putting up a negative review. It doesn't matter the brand these days. Everything is assembled so fast with the cheapest materials to meet customer demand and budget. This could have happened to any machine but you have to give the manufacturer a chance to make it right.
Jason Kubitz you quibble.
This was an excellent honest review. I wish MORE consumers would “put up negative reviews”. This wasn’t a negative review.
I am still going to buy this washer, BECAUSE of this review. In a nutshell, he said ‘everything about this pressure washer worked like a dream for 3 years, but be cautious when tipping it back’
Thats because there great pressure washers!
They are fantastic pressure washers. I have fixed four of these (returned) washers in the last week. These are the newer models with the new Hondas The only problem is this clogged carburetors because people run crap ethanol gasoline in them and don’t store them properly. No problems with the pumps so far. I understand ethanol-free gasoline is not available in all areas. In this case, run a well-known brand like, Exxon, BP or Shell and only get 93 octane. Use a fuel stabilizer as well.
I'm guessing the reason the bolts sheared off is probably the bolts weren't tighten. Somebody from the factory forgot to tighten it to specs. And eventually from the vibration, it sheared off. Well thank you for making the video. That way I can check on it. I might even put lock tight
I’ve not had anything drop off yet, but taking this machine backwards down some
steps, a valve snapped off flush to the body. A machine shop got the rest out. Works
fine now, but, yep, the design...Hobbes thinks it just wasn’t well thought out.
Owned for 7 years and never had a problem.
Thanks for posting this. I have the PowerStroke version of this pressure washer and in the instructions they warn about tilting the unit too far while transporting. Now I know why.
Waaaaao...
I have the same problem...after 3 years
Thanks for advice ...

Wow was thinking about buying this mdl, thanks for sharing
It is a great pressure washer performance wise. It was just the design and coming apart after three years that soured it.
Thanks for sharing your review. I too was thinking of purchasing that model but a poor design is a poor design and I’m not waisting my money. ☠️
Great video, thanks for the warning.
Mine is fantastic! Two years and going strong.
thanks for the review....I'm looking for a good gas pressure washer
Awesome review! Thanks bud! 👏👏👏
Thanks for commenting Rob. If you like, please subscribe as I have more reviews on the way.
I agree 100%!
Great video.
I need help. Pull start cord rips out of my hand when i attempt to pull / start it.
Does anyone know why and the fix? Its been a year and I'm still at a dead end.
Ryobi GCV 190 3100psi 2.5 GPM
Is it fair to say that had you been more careful/mindful, you would stil be using that Ryobi? Based on your review, I wouldn't hesitate to buy the same machine.
I have this same unit and found a better way not to have to drag it all around the yard because of the hose length. Buy another hose and connect the two hoses together. That way you can set the unit at one place and leave it and drag your new hose length where you need it. The hose that comes with this unit sucks in that it can get twisted. Best to unroll it competely before hooking it up. If it gets twisted, then turn off the unit and remove the gun and hose and straighten it out. Commercial units have better made hoses that don't twist up like this.
My problem was mainly the 20 feet from my shed to the driveway. Nowadays I would not have as mush of a problem as we have put in paving stones rather close together with gravel in between, so there would not be that drop when going over them. I really do like my DeWalt horizontal pressure washer I bought that has rubber tires.
Is there a easy solution to stop this from happening? It seems like a great pressure washer
It was indeed a great pressure washer until it died. The only thing I would have done different is carried it more over non-flat terrain so that the intakes on the bottom never touch anything, which is difficult unless you are on totally level pavement or something like that. I only used 100% gas with no ethanol to help the engine stay in the best shape.
There is a product category for each price point. Maybe look at it like cost per use vs cost to hire a professional. I have this model and the 1200 dewalt. Problems occur on maintenance and quality on all scales. 3 years 100 buck a year 25 dollars a use maybe.. Not terrible.. But yes these lower end models use lower grade quality materials.
Try to find you a skid plate and bolt it to the bottom of your washers if you use them for offroading
Hahaha
You are not the first to have this problem in the reviews I've read. Poor quality pot metal is what is typically blamed. You can buy the whole pump unit for ~$100-120, stings but better than $400 for a new unit. I may get it anyway as I want Honda Engine, Storability (like the folding handle) & Idle Down Function. Could you comment on the last two. Like Gil mentioned below, the other I'm considering is the Generac as it is similarly priced but it doesn't have a Honda engine, the smaller storage space of the folding handle or Idle down. BTW, wow, people are kind of jerky in those comments. Thanks for taking the time to film & publish your review.
Thanks for the comment - as for the folding down handle and Idle down function, both items I liked when I bought it. Recently I finally bought a new pressure washer and ended up buying a DeWalt 3400 psi for $599 (USD). I've got about 3 hours on it now and I love it. I don't miss or even think about the idle down, and it is fairly short and stores easily. One of the biggest things I like is that it has actual inflated tires and it goes over my step stones easily, as before with the Ryobi, it would just "bounce" off every stone with those hard plastic tires. The tires alone was almost worth the extra $200. I'll probably do a review of the DeWalt pressure washer when I get about 10 hours. Thanks again for commenting.
Great review....scratch that model off my list
Yeah, these should last a lot longer, and that looks like defect. My old Excel lasted a good 10 years. I'm looking at MegaShot 3200 PSI at 2.5 GPM HONDA GC190 Premium Gas Pressure Washer at Home Depot, for $379. But I wonder how that compares to the Generac...
Did you buy the MegaShot 3200 PSI? If so, how do you like it? Does the MegaShot move around alot when the wand is engaged?
@@michaelwelker3595 Yes, I bought the "Simpson Megashot MS60968-S - Honda GC190 Engine $379" and it works well. It's got plenty of power, significantly more than the 2600PSI Excel I had for so long. I prefer an adjustable nozzle but it's hard to find one that accepts that much pressure so I use the individual nozzles that come with it and they are ok. I don't think the Honda engine is any better than the Kohler, but Honda has a loyal following that might debate. Like any small engine it may take a half-dozen pulls to start the Honda, or the first pull--no telling. I like the small size because 99% of the time it's stored away waiting for the next usage.
Does it move around? It's small and lightweight so I like to put it in the grass with the exhaust facing away, and then it doesn't move. I also use a longer hose than the one that came with it. Lowes had a nice 40' hose and I've never used the 25' hose that came with the unit.
I do recommend the Simpson, and have no experience with the Ryobi.
So you admitted to damaging the unit by hit the bottom on stones, and you gave the washer a bad review? Smh #negligence
Kind of hard not to hit something that design unless you are only taking it on paved surfaces. The bad review is mostly the design, I loved its performance. Now I have a Dewalt horizontal pressure washer with actual inflated tires (not plastic ones like the Ryobi). It is very much worth the extra money for the horizontal design so there is no chance to hit anything. The Honda engine was great, easy to start, if only the intakes were not on the bottom so close to the ground.
@@HallidaysKitchen But this Ryobi is super light and has a strong frame for lifting. I have one and just take the extra seconds to put down the wand and carefully move it to my next work area.
I was gonna but this tomorrow thanks to your video forget it thanks . I thought Honda engine great machine I was excited to get it tomorrow morning I saw this video not getting it now . Gonna get the dewalt. Thanks
Honda makes the motor/engine,it’s the pump that broke and totally different maker/manufacture...just FYI!
I have the same unit and it works great, almost 3 years. Yes the water hookups are not in the best position but I have not had any issues. You broke your pressure washer and are blaming it on Ryobi ...
I am just giving my opinion based upon the performance of their product.
No. I think they suck. Their electric one gave out on me after 3 years. Their 1800 psi gave out on me 2 months in. They just suck.
Just got one!
maybe don't apply pressure where there's not meant too be?
are all the ryobi w/ honda engine models the same? theres a 3000 and a 3300 psi model also? same issue anyone?
Used my 3000psi ryobi for the first time took it down my steps and sheared off the intake. Cheap pot metal. Idk what to do with this thing now. Super bummed
Replace the pump. They are 110 bucks online.
Better than paying 379 bucks for a new one.
The honda engine will last a long time.
Anton Chigurh yes sir it’s at Home Depot. Getting fixed they said it will take 6 weeks.
6 weeks to put in a new pump...
You can do it yourself. Its not hard.
Did the bolts just shear off? Just wondering if I should replace my bolts with stronger grade bolts before this happens.....
Yes, it was the bolts that just came off. If you replace, do one at a time as the system seemed to be sealed.
@@HallidaysKitchen sounds good, thanks for your reply!
I don't know what you expect manufactures to do at a price point of $430. If you want a unit you can drag all over the place and beat the crap out of, you're going to have to pay A LOT more, in the $1100-$1500 range. You wouldn't drive your car over rocks and expect it to be fine after you bottom out 3 or 4 times. It's a cast aluminum pump and you shouldn't blame a manufacturer for your negligence.
I have the same washer and don’t have any issue with hitting things because I pay attention to what I’m rolling it over. Just sayin
Yeah, I ended up actually having to lift and carry it over my pavers to get it over areas that were not flat. Don't have to do that now with my DeWalt horizontal pressure washer. It is definitely worth the extra money and it has air filled tires, not hard plastic ones and it easily goes over any terrain with a lot of clearance room - I love it.
@@HallidaysReviews your high! Ryobi is way better then dewalt!
So you dragged the unit over rocks, and most likely pulled too hard on the high pressure hose. I would suggest purchasing a commercial grade machine. The 3100 is residential quality.
Hi there, yes I finally bought a DeWalt pressure washer with real tires and it is great (I have a video on that one here).
@@HallidaysReviews dewalt price 200 hundred more. For what your paying it better be good
@@yenghang1609 Yes, it is worth it. You get what you pay.
Purchased the Ryobi from Home Depot to replace a Husky 1550 that I had for about 15 years🌼 allabout.wiki/RY141900 I've only used the Ryobi once so far, but it works as advertised. There's a big difference in cleaning ability between the 1550psi and the 1600psi.
umm... why didn't you just get a replacement ....? they have 3 year warranties , at the very least you could have sold the replacement and gotten some of your money back
Hi there, it was just out of warranty (as always happens).
I ended up getting the DeWalt vertical pressure washer which I should have bought in the first place, put I went cheap with the Ryobi, won't do that again.
A couple broken bolts is not that difficult of a fix. Fish them out with a left hand drill and replace them
Yeah. what is a couple of broken bolts to a man with tools? Fix it.
You shouldn’t have to be drilling out bolts and re threading a 3 year old peace of equipment. If it broke once it’s gonna break again. Just a poor design and not worth waisting money on. ☠️
the engines are honda only change the brands
My wife's has the same design 🤔
Its unbreakable. I figure if it breaks I can replace it
Great long term review!! I won't be buying!!!
Should’ve brought the extended warranty.
Extended warranty offered was 3 years, which would have expired just before the pressure washer failed.
That would have been added insult to injury when it breaks right after the extra warranty you purchased expired.
Plus thats not covered under warranty
When you get another pressure washer, get some shoes , who washes with sandals on ?
get a life
I do
I wear dress shoes and a tux
Sounds like you broke it dragging it around lazily. Judging by your other comments, it didn’t break during the 3 years you had it. You broke it right after your warranty expired and you were probably salty that your store wouldn’t let you return or exchange the unit. Next time, call Ryobi directly so they can address the issue before crying about something YOU broke.
Actually I ended up carrying it over the stepping stones to the stamped concrete driveway to help protect its delicate underbelly and then carrying it back over the stones to the shed where it was protected. I only used 100% gasoline with no ethanol to help protect the engine. I did not call the store I bought it from (Home Depot) as I respect warranties and their time frames. Besides, the best they could do is get me another vertical shaft pressure washer which through this experience I found was not right for me. I loved the engine and the performance of the pressure washer, just not the vertical shaft and cheap plastic tires.
I made this video in the hopes that those thinking of getting it, could decide if this type of pressure washer was right for them. I ended up buying a DeWalt horizontal shaft pressure washer with rubber tires and I really love it. If I had seen a video like the one I made before I bought the Ryobi, I may have spent the extra money for the horizontal shaft and rubber inflatable tires.
I do my best to baby my equipment and to put the least amount of stress on them that I can, but sometimes, life and design happen.
I have this same unit and agree the placement of the hose attachment is absolutely ridiculous. It is designed so that if you grab the handle to move the unit as designed, the water line and pressure line drag on the ground. No matter how well it works I will never buy another one. This is a very poorly designed unit.
Jist got it today guys doing presuerewash in jax fl hit me up for jobdone
You got a lemon
I surely hope that is the case. I would love to hear from others who have had this same unit for years to see how it is doing for them.
can I have that one lol
a rather stupid review. No disrespect. its a personal use issues not design issues, be careful next time you pull it. Cheers.
All I can do is tell how is performed and worked for me. Don't know what I could have done better (kept it in a shed, only used no ethanol gas and did not abuse it).
I know I would have wanted to know that the bottom can just "blow out", that is why I shared. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
I was kind of thinking the same thing. The guy got pissed off cuz you went 4-wheeling in his pressure washer and fucked it up. Take better care of your equipment
Your review is terrible!! I own a pressure washing company in Cincinnati and ow. 12 of these going on 3 years each doing over 100 house washes a year each never EVER 1 issue i highly recommend
Biggest garbage I bought. I used mine for two hrs and did not work after that
More like watch where you’re going and you won’t break shit!!!
