Thanks for this short Gingery update. I am one of those following the Gingery lathe with more interest than all your other stuff. (I watch and click like on all your stuff, but the Gingery lathe is the big thing for me.)
I really need to focus on this thing a bit more or it won't be done before 2035 🤣
Same for me. Hello Paul
I'm one of those who can't wait for more Gingery content. I like it significantly more than 3d printing 😅
awesome! it'll keep coming, but kinda slowly. And i use printing in the gingery build, too 😉
Yay, Gingery time!
I made some chips in this video, that's "lathe-related", right? 🤣 someday the chips will be made *with* the lathe
Great to see an update, im planning on starting my gingery lathe soon so its nice to see someone else interested in it still
Go for it! and be sure to document it as you make it. videos or a blog or something.
Wow! I didn't think you were still doing this...Really great!!
Yep still going! I had a big project over the winter that really slowed down my progress but I'm back at it!
@@PaulsGarage I commented above that I saw a VHS video from David Gingery and you were correct in pronouncing his name correctly way back when. It is pronounced as in ginger like "ginger-ee". Also I am gearing up to build a benchhtop miling machine that I am designing. I have been assembling a small machine shop to support my channel that I will be starting very soon. I found a Southbend lathe that needs work. A neighbor who was moving offered his 1957 Atlas 6 inch Lathe that has a ton of tooling and was in a barn inn controlled atmosphere for its life. I also found a Burke number 4 that I need to find a work table for and possibly other parts. My project is a 1928 Morgan Brooklands style GN special race car of which only one exists. I am using an aircraft opposed twin engine as the power plant connected to an MG 4 speed power plant through a hand cast two piece adapter that I have to make and then to an MG differential with wire wheels. I am going to need a milling machine right away so I have plans that I drew up after a really technical dream one night so I it should be better than I can do while awake..lol I am getting the foundry built and am going to use a cast iron 5 quart pot to melt the aluminum or whatever I am going to use. You inspired me to finally do this. I am recovering from getting hit while on my 1957 Harley Panhead so when I am back on my feet and it is warmer here in PA I am going to start. Thanks for your inspiration Paul...
that sounds like a lot of fun! good luck and I hope recovery goes well. getting hit doesn't sound fun at all.
@@PaulsGarage Thank you. It has been over 18 months and I am finally up on my feet however I had my right leg nearly crushed in two and that is what is taking the longest to heal. I get to keep it though which is really great. It was touch and go for quite a while. I am really pscyched to start building the bennchtop milling machine and then jump into the big stuff. I will let you know so we can compare notes on the melting and stuff. I am going to use cast aluminum because I have access to that.
A base! A good place to start to be sure.
only 5 years after starting haha
Looks Great. Now let's see you keep that momentum.
No promises 🤣
Nicely done! It’s progress, and some cool progress at that! Seriously, the base looks great.
Thanks! Finally time to move on to the *lathe* part next
Also following along. Thanks for the update. Can’t wait for more.
Great to see this “shelf” assembled! Always excited to see your lathe build vids 😁
More to come! I hope soon
Great to see you again. I remember when you started this project 👍
The first time or this last time? Eventually it will be done I promise
@@PaulsGarage i saw both 🙂
What a journey...
Finally.. an update :)
hopefully not the last!
There's only one other channel I know of doing the Gingery lathe - Makercise - and I have (technically) started my own. It's really great to see yours progressing!
Makercise is a great guy, i'm kinda bummed he didn't finish the mill but i think he's moving on from RUclips. I stole the bed/feet dimensions and the ways attachment method from him
@@PaulsGarage I was stoked he did the shaper too. Was really cool to watch it go from a stock gingery lathe and see all his learnings go into the shaper. Maybe you can do the mill ;)
@dman8734 I plan to go to the shaper then mill, yeah, but at my current rate of progress it will take a while haha
That Monkey Wards drill press brings back memories. My sister and brother-in-law gave me one about 15 years ago, but it was orange or red. They had gotten alot of use out of it. I used it some, it was maybe better then the hand drill, but a $50 big box store lumber yard drill press put it to shame.
Looking ahead to the carriage and cross slide stuff i might need to get one of those cheap $50 ones lol
@PaulsGarage Yep, but those cheap $50 ones are probably double that now!
Great work Paul!
Even on the other side of the world (yes, its summer, 40degC and daytime here...) this is stilll good fun to watch and follow along.
I already have a lathe, so I don't know why...
Kkeep up the good work mate!
Thank you! And enjoy summer. Our winter has barely been a winter at all. It's oddly warm. I don't even have the garage heater on
Following along there Mr Paul, just hope it's finished before too old to remember to watch for it 😂
Just giving you a hard time there.
I hope it's finished before I'm too old to use it!
Hopes and Dreams? Thoughts and Prayers!
I have a feeling "hopes and dreams" are far less effective lol
It looks really good!
Thank you!!
👍👍 yep - see you next time
Looking good! The lathe bed is alright too I guess.
Haha thanks!
Nice going Let me know when your ready to turn my rotors 😁
only if you sign a waiver saying i'm not liable when the rotors explode the next time you hit the brakes 🤣
@@PaulsGarage hmmm. We can start with my moped rotors as a trial run.
no worries, they'll self adjust if needed@@PaulsGarage
for you drill press - drill 4 holes into your desk where you can tie it down =)
you can plug the holes in your desk when not using
Good update!
Thanks!
I'd honestly like more frequent, shorter updates :D
That might motivate me to work faster too 🤔
you might even be able to mount your drill press onto that extra aluminum casting and use the lathe base as a solid place to mount your Montgomery Ward Drill press. =D
longest way around to a better drill press ever 🤣 I love it
You could even replace the motor while you're at it, and maybe even the spindle bearings, and...
Hm. Drill press of Theseus.
as long as i keep the plastic shell with the Wards sticker on it, it's the same one
Truly a great philosopher of our time
Making progress.
Slow but sure-ish
Always love your vids.... Never know what you're going to do & say!😜😎
Me neither
@@PaulsGarage 😂😂😂😂😂
I think that countersink may be dull... a good honing would likely help
I have barely used it but almost all the use has been abuse. I likely wrecked it
@@PaulsGarage for metal you may prefer the Zero flute countersinks, The kinds with the large angled hole drilled in them.
Paul, I just stumbled upon your video's. Nice work with all of your casting info. I live in the frozen north also, Minnesota. How could I get in touch with you. I've always wanted to do some of my own casting. I have a Bridgeport mill, and two lathes. I want to be able to make some of my own car parts.
Let's all hope, for Paul's sake, that the "Drill Press" immolates itself, forcing him to get a real drill press.
YAAAAAY!
Can't let you get too far ahead of me
I had to laugh after all the previous tedious hand scraping on the ways, then in this eps nicking it up on the drill press! I give it two more eps before you do an unboxing video of a "cheap Chinese lathe". :) Still, this is as far as I've got with the Gingery build as well!
Haha the cheap Chinese lathes out there eliminate half the fun! Who wants a dumpy lathe you have to fix up when you could *make* a dumpy lathe and *then* fix it up!
By the way I saw a video from David Gingery and you were correct pronouncing his name like Ginger as in "Ginger-ee"......
I've heard first hand accounts that all contradict lol I don't know what to think anymore
@@PaulsGarage We'll just go with the crowd. if I come across that video again I'll send you the link.
hey mate if you want a really nice old drill press that just needs some parts cast for it let me know. free and all
o.O lathe!
or a very sturdy step
@@PaulsGarageWhy not both? ;)
and a really really short balance beam?
even if the drill press doesn't have rigidity, atleast it has a genuine "Jacobs" chuck... so some quality parts for a custom built drill press as another side project? rebuild?
i've taken this thing apart, it's probably not possible to beef this one up. I could totally steal the chuck, though.
see you in 8 months XD
🤣🤣
Both. Yep, I said it. It's both :P
Haha you're probably right
Lol. Could of been worse? Could of drilled them by hand? I built the majority of the lathe like that. I don't own a drill press. Imagine the headache I went through.😅
everything could always be worse, that's for sure. At least it's attached!
@@PaulsGarage no doubt. If you think it can't be worse, it will be worse. I have learned to appreciate everything much more than when I was a kid. I learned no matter how bad it seems, there is always worse.
Paul, whilst I admire your determination to build a lathe using stoneage tools, couldn't you use some of your RUclips millions to buy a new drill press? It could help you build a better lathe. Or perhaps you are emotionally attached to your drill press? I get that. have you given it a name? I call my drill press "Bendy".
Lol I have no emotional attachment, but I know a guy who wants to sell me his dad's old drill press, we just haven't had time to meet up yet
