New Caledonia: Fires burn in the streets during riots over voting reforms

- Riots erupted on the French-ruled Pacific island of New Caledonia over proposed voting reforms.
Authorities put a curfew in place, shut the international airport and called for police reinforcements after protests turned violent.
Under the new law, French residents who have lived in New Caledonia for 10 years would be allowed to vote in provincial elections.
Local leaders have expressed concerns that the new law would dilute the vote of indigenous Kanak.

This incident has nothing to do with colonialism. The indigenous people there protested over new rule of the election there which allowed french people in new caledonia to vote in local election there. They didnt protest for independence.

@@Bill-lg1xy like i said before, new caledonians didn't come to the street and protest for independence from france. They against new election law that allowed french people in new Caledonia to vote ini new caledonians local election. And yes, it will become the issue for new caledonians who wants independence from france when many new caledonians choose to remain part of France. But the majority of new caledonian vote to remain part of france in referendum.So who cares with those minority new caledonians who want to be independence from france.
