I heard the following true story about 8 years ago from an old Italian villager (90+ years old) in Tuscany who knew the parties involved.
A local Italian butcher originally made Mortadella Sausage out of their excess number of wild donkeys after the war that were wandering all over the countryside. There was also a shortage of meat after the war because most of the livestock had been killed and people were very poor. The butcher would hunt the animals at night, so the local people were initially unaware of what meat was used in the sausage. It became very popular with the locals.
However people began to notice the decrease in the wild donkey population and began to have suspicions, so they spied on and followed the butcher during his night hunting trips and caught him hunting a wild donkey. The locals became upset and were going to ly*h him, so he managed to escape on the next ship bound for Venezuela and lived there for the rest of his life, working as a butcher there.
