Remembering Bushwacker

  • Bushwacker, the bucking bull many consider the greatest of all time, calmly laid down yesterday, closed his eyes and passed away.He was 18 years old and had been enjoying the past decade in retirement on Julio Moreno’s ranch in California. Before that, there was of course a truly legendary PBR Brand of Honor career including three world championships (2011, 2013, 2014), 64 buck offs in 66 outs, and the infamous 42-out buckoff streak finally broken by JB Mauney.
He was a smart-ultracompetitive heavyweight. In fact, Julio compared him to Muhammad Ali. He knew he was the greatest, and strutted around the arena as such.Off the dirt, no bull before or since has received as much attention...or relished it as much. The proud chocolate bovine who never met a camera he didn’t like was a mainstream pop culture superstar - certainly the most popular PBR athlete during his reign.
Newsweek likened him to Michael Jordan. ESPN the Magazine made him the first animal featured in their popular “Body” issue. He transcended our sport. In the arena, Bushwacker was king and he lived that way until the end. He will forever be a symbol of strength, power, determination, raw athleticism and greatness. Rest in Peace, Champ

What’s scary was that how calm Bushwhacker was. Just stood in the chute and just let the riders sit on him. Most riders get a feel how the bull is going to act when it tries to get them off when they first sit on him. But Bushwhacker just stood there, then became a force of explosive energy the millisecond that door opened. He was unpredictable.

The sport is truly dependent on both the bull AND the rider. Must have been some crazy, bored cowboys who created this sport. Remember, though, the bulls have a strap to make them buck and move. A great bull learns to get the job done and get back to being pampered. 😅

Hearing all these Cowboys talking about Bushwacker in such high regards and rereferring to him as an "Athlete" was astonishing. Never thought past the face value of the sport, always thought the bulls were just bucking, realizing how every movement is calculated by the bull just gave me an appreciation for Bushwacker. RIP Bushwacker✊

It's always tough to lose an individual we love of whatever species. I'm glad Bushwacker passed in his own time without needing intervention. It is always kinder on those of us left behind when we don't need to make that most difficult, compassionate decision at the sharp end of caring for our beloved animals. So sorry for your loss, Mr. Moreno and family.

Outside of the riders, Bushwhacker was the bull that got me into the sport, after researching and getting into it bones, reindeer, bushwhacker, and now cool whip are the bulls that kept/keep me addicted to the sport.
I was lucky enough to be traveling with my cousin for his pro boxing debut, i was blessed to see Cool Whip break the buckoff record at 43 buckoffs, previously held by BushWhacker at 42. I almost missed my cousins pro debut to see CoolWhip get that 43rd buck off 😂
