In my head canon, Kanye retired after Graduation and never released any other record afterwards. He is now living in the forest, with a loving family and he occasionally punches a nazi every now and then.
Like even 10 years ago when Kanye was becoming even more of a hateable and polarizing public figure, at least he was pumping out excellent music so I can see why he still had fans. Now his his music has also completely gone down the shitter quality wise, so it’s insane to me that there are still Kanye stans out there willing to put up with his BS
I'm glad you were so respectful to Amy in your section about her. She is one of few people where just thinking about her is enough to bring me to tears. She deserved so much better than she got. 'Back to Black' still gets multiple playthroughs in my house every year. I hope wherever she ended up, she's happy and comfortable.
Back in my strictly indie rock days I came across Lady Gaga’s myspace page shortly before she released The Fame and sent it to my friend who lived and died by Pitchfork Media’s album reviews. I was like, “Normally this isn’t my thing but she’s kinda good right?” I will never forget my friend’s response: “She’ll never go anywhere.” Months later this very friend was listening to The Fame on repeat and to this day denies that she ever dismissed Lady Gaga.
Man, the Duffy segment… as someone who was really into her during her peak and only heard pieces about the crazy thing that happened to her after she disappeared… that sounds like something out of a true crime thriller or even a horror movie. And the fact that all that actually happened… and to DUFFY of all people, who was a big name pop star for a while… that’s beyond insane.
@@rikimaru700 I'd say in general, the RockFerry album still holds up pretty well. Songs like Syrup and Honey and Warwick Avenue are also really good tracks. Even her big hit, Mercy, is a fun one. It's a shame that's her only hit, at least in America (and considering what happened to her afterwards, the song's chorus literally being "I'm begging you for Mercy, why won't you release me" is... one of the most darkly ironic things about any one-hit wonder song). I've wondered what would happen if Todd In The Shadows would cover Mercy for One-Hit Wonderland, especially since I wonder how he'd talk about... well, the elephant in the room. I think one thing that really hurt Duffy's sophomore album was trying too hard to recapture the success of her biggest hit. The lead-off single, Well Well Well, seems like it's trying to be Mercy Part 2, when her voice worked better on slower songs like the two I mentioned before. It seemed like, for a while, it was between Duffy and Adele were almost competing for who'd be the successor to Amy Winehouse, and... I think it's easy to see why Adele won that by a landslide.

Yea, unfortunately there are emotional traumas that some people are never able to fully recover from. I’ve known some people for whom their mothers were their biggest emotional support systems and anchors, and losing them caused them to really spiral. Especially if they never get any sort of emotional support or help for their grief, they just get worse with time. I think Kanye’s mother’s death was one of the things that kicked his descent down the rabbit hole off. I have to wonder if he ever went to any kind of grief counseling or anything to help him cope with it, because it seems like that’s probably a shadow that’s hung over him for most of his life, and especially his career.

I think some people are going to see Taylor Swift nominated the same year as Amy Winehouse, and similar to Shania Twain on one of those other years, ask how on earth she didn’t win. I think it’s two things: 1. Amy was just that big at the time, in terms of critical and commercial success. 2. This was Taylor’s debut album. I’m pretty sure those who aren’t die-hard Swifties or went to multiple Eras Tour dates can’t name any songs off that album besides Teardrops On My Guitar. 41:38 Rob Swire from Pendulum co-produced Rude Boy for Rihanna’s album Rated R. As a lifelong fan of all of Rob’s work, in and outside of pendulum, still shocked me when I first learned about it.
MATISYAHU! Thank you for remembering him, my "wait, what am I listening to and why do I think it's not half bad?" artist of the 2004/5 period. That said, I actually *had* a copy of the Segal album (just for 'seriously it exists' - I also have a copy of Pat Boone's In a Metal Mood, don't @ me) and I might have to check out the Minnie Driver one, didn't know about that one.
Damn, this video had it all. Abusers, nazi sympathizers, boring milquetoast ballad singers, offensive puppets, Crazy Frog. What a ride the mid to late 2000s were.
15:37 this might be the biggest example of the Grammy’s dateline for a album/artist to be nominated being wacky. Maroon 5’s debut came out in 2002, how tf did they get nominated in the 2005 Grammys for BNA??
One thing about Kanye that makes it so difficult to talk about him is that his first 7 albums(College Dropout all the way to TLOP) have gotten so much praise and love from the hip hop/music community and also that he was already a polarizing figure when he first started rapping that he garnered so much goodwill from audiences and people in the industry to the point where they would completely ignore any of his problematic tendencies(like his bipolar disorder for example). Another example is that even if you erased all of his rap records from history, he would still be considered one of the best hip hop producers of all time. Just listen to some of the beats he made in the early 2000s, and they’re fantastic(and honestly some of my favorite beats of all time comes from his work in the early 2000s, like the Scarface song “Guess Who’s Back”)
100% agree on the Imogen Heap opinion, but the shenanigans really in full effect with her because she had another album before Speak For Yourself in Details by Frou Frou (her side band)
Nowadays, I feel like most people who know Duffy are JoJo fans, as Distant Dreamer was the JoJo Part 6 ending. …and after what happened to her, I really hope that’s resulted in good things happening for her to help her heal from that horrifying experience she went through.
I did have peaks into the actual list itself after the first half dropped and yeah I knew instantly that this would make for a real toughie for Crash to make. I do really like how it’s the complete polar opposite in terms of the first half where most of these artists (the nominees and winners) were cursed. That transition was like the formation from a casual Storm into a Category 5 Hurricane.
steven seagal's jamaican dance hall recognition? in my pop music history video? probably still more interesting than anything he did in the following years
Dying Fetus album in the background for absolutely no reason *chef's kiss* Also when i hear Duffy I just immediately think "Oh, closing theme to Stone Ocean!"
For me, the big shenanigan with Maroon 5 was that it was a reedition (or maybe it was a deluxe verison of the album, I don't remember) of Songs About Jane who got them the nomination due to having released in the entry window of the '04 Grammy's (as a reminder, Song about Jane got originally released in 2002). Happy holidays to you and your dog!
I just realized most of these nominees were retail-core. Like almost one artist of each year had a song in the playlist at my workplace. I honestly miss them now that 2/3 of the playlist is Christmas music. 🙃 Just 1.5 weeks left, and I'll be free from my curse soon!
I actually vividly remember constantly blasting that los lonely boys album. They were so not the pick for best new artists, but holy damm- that album with "Heaven" on it is a ten for me. They definitely fall into "dad rock" but shit- they have so much passion in that joint beginning to end. My parents went to see them when I was in the womb, which is always great to half-heartedly brag about. I've definitely gone back to that well many times as a young adult (me today) Amazing video. I can tell you worked so hard making this entire series. I loved finally hearing SOMEONES thoughts on them. Obviously, not a lot of people know them. Hell, I live on the West Coast, so I surely wouldn't if I didn't come from a family of guitar enthusiasts. I also think you gave them a great and amusing analysis as always. That was just very neat to me.
Sounds like Head's "weird Christian pivot" was what helped him get off the drugs and focus on being a dad, so that's good for him at least. And that first solo album of his is critical of believers who use their faith to justify being terrible people, which honestly is the kind of message I would expect to hear from a Korn member who found Jesus.
Imogen Heap has an international career, I had never heard of Carrie Underwood before now. Country just barely have any relevance outside of the US and Canada.
@@FrankCastle-ki9euDixie Chicks toured in the UK, but they where never significant in the charts. I did use the word "barely" intentionally. There are a couple of country acts that did cross the Atlantic and actually score hits but there are far in between, and usually the ones that do are singers like Shanaia Twain or Johnny Cash that really transcend the genre of country. And all of the examples we gave are more than a decade old.
Meanwhile I only ever knew from Lady A in the late 2000s because Need You Now, which doesn't even sound much like their usual stuff, became a moderate crossover hit. And while I did know about Carrie because American Idol, Country is quite certainly a nonentity outside North America.
Hi, person who made an hour long video defending Songs About Jane here, the deep cuts on that album go harder than anyone realizes. The musical chops are real.
I'm shocked there was no mention of Lupe Fiasco in 2006. You wanna talk about breathes of fresh air in hip hop that helped usher in new waves? Sure he didn't reach his commercial peak until the early 2010s, but Food & Liquor is an undeniable classic.
I didn't have to look up The Good, The Bad, and The Queen, cause I have their first album and recently had 2 of the songs off it pop up on random when I was listening to my music library. Really solid record! I also remembered they released a second album a decade later.
My kid was watching with me when Crash was talking about The Good, the Bad, and the Queen and gave me side eye when I named the band instantly upon being asked to name them.

Years and years ago my local rock station had a weird listener request anything goes weekend (maybe a charity drive) so I heard it for the first and only full time then. But like you, the song just pops back into my head.
1:07:06 "And only recently has the momentum for (Carrie Underwood's) career started to die down..." Yea, given the recent news about Carrie, I think it's safe to say things have hit a SCREECHING halt for her, and tainted her for even a lot of her die-hards.
@@gracecarpinter8623 And the crazy thing is, in the statement she provided in response to this, she said she's doing it as a symbol of unity for the country, for everyone to come together or something like that. Part of me wants to give her the benefit of the doubt and want to believe she's being sincere with her message and that she doesn't actually support the MAGA-F*cker and what he stands for... but even still, I feel like there was probably a better way she could've gotten that point across than performing at the inauguration of the man many people in this country, including those in her LGBTQIA+ fanbase (at least the one she had until this) view as Public Enemy #1!
You were absolutely right about the late 00s being the dumb era of music. That's when I started being in my old metal phase and stopped caring about new music for years.
Regarding Maroon 5, I will say that I’m one of those people who defends the first three albums (yes, even Hands All Over), and I completely disagree about Songs About Jane being a “singles album.” Deep cuts like “Shiver,” “Tangled,” “Through with You,” and “Not Coming Home” are fantastic. Still, great to see you back!
Agreed. I was really surprised with Crash's take. There are so many hidden gems on "Songs About Jane" and I find the album flows remarkably well front-to-back.
I’m not gonna lie, if you ever plan on coming back to this series, jumping straight to the pandemic years and post pandemic years would be very interesting. The 2023 Best New Artist group resembles the really bad years from the early 90’s. It’d be interesting to see how COVID impacted the Grammys.
1:28:30 2024 was not only globally a year with way too much happening but it seems like it was in everyone's personal life aswell (at least everyone seems to tell that and my life def was)😅😅
The Cheeky Gurls are actually from the UK (not born here obviously but they live here). They got famous from appearing on a British TV talent show (Popstars) and being memorably terrible. Because of that they got a record deal and became kind of ironic/camp pop culture 'icons' here for a while. They still pop up on British TV every now and again
This one was a lot darker than the last two, but I'm glad that it ended on a good note! And as much as I would love another one of these videos, I'd also say it's best to take a break for a little while haha 😅
As a die hard Jonas Brothers fan it was interesting to hear your perspective on them. And you giving vailed reasons to why their second album aka the one that shot them threw super stardom a second time sounded the way it did. Yes second time their debut album it’s about time came out in 2006 but did horrible sales wise. And it was the third album from 2008 A Little Bit Longer that got them the Grammy nomination. Even then Adele was the right choice to win. But it was cool to witness them being the first act from Hollywood Records to be nominated by the academy. By the way if anyone likes the busted version of Year 3000 this year there’s a 2.0 version with Busted and the Jonas Brothers singing the original lyrics. Thanks again Crash and please take as long as you need before you do another list like this.
Dallas Green's song Hello, I'm in Delaware is named that way because he fell in love with a girl when he played with his band Alexisonfire, at a local fun venue close to me called the Grange, which was big for up and coming emo type musicians in the 2000s. Unfortunately, they closed down. Paramore also played one of their first-ever sets at the Grange
About Duffy…Jesus H Christ of Nazareth, I truly hope she is recovering. Seriously, between her and Cassie, which other 2000’s one-hit wonder has suffered horrific sexual abuse? …is Vanessa Carlton doing fine?

I will not tolerate this Keane hate, but welcome back Crash, and prayers to Duffy.
Eyyyy, a fellow Keane enjoyer! Under the Iron Sea hits me right in the nostalgia!
I like Keane too. I don’t care what anyone else says
Damn, this video had it all. Abusers, nazi sympathizers, boring milquetoast ballad singers, offensive puppets, Crazy Frog. What a ride the mid to late 2000s were.
That part of the 2005 section with the curling monkey's paw had me CACKLING rotflmao 😆
Well thankfully Duffy has been remembered after one of her songs from the album she was nominated was used in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 6
A 2007-8 snub I don’t think you mentioned was Lupe Fiasco debut Food & Liquor
Why is nobody talking about Crash's five jars of mayo 😭 😭
Because he's an ignorant white boy, of course he has loads of mayo!
not enough mayo if you ask me
15:37 this might be the biggest example of the Grammy’s dateline for a album/artist to be nominated being wacky. Maroon 5’s debut came out in 2002, how tf did they get nominated in the 2005 Grammys for BNA??
Songs About Jane was a sleeper album so it didn't get big/chart till like 2004 if I remember correctly
Harder to Breathe was a TOP 20 HIT in 2003, and I'm certain that was BEFORE the Songs About Jane reissue, so major SHENANIGANS!
Glad to see you Crash. It had been so long since your last video that I was starting to worry something bad happened.
Just listen to some of the beats he made in the early 2000s, and they’re fantastic(and honestly some of my favorite beats of all time comes from his work in the early 2000s, like the Scarface song “Guess Who’s Back”)
"It's me, hi, I'm the Bottom it's me"
Good lord I didn't expect to wake up to the longest Crash Thompson video ever, Merry Christmas everybody :D
40:09
I'm SO glad you mentioned Karnivool, that band doesn't get enough attention! Their first two records are incredible!
UK here, The Cheeky Girls were kind of our fault. Sorry about that.
100% agree on the Imogen Heap opinion, but the shenanigans really in full effect with her because she had another album before Speak For Yourself in Details by Frou Frou (her side band)
Ayyy nice Alexisonfire vinyl you got in the background Crash!
Good to have you back Crash!
23:38 Look, if you lived under the reign of Nicolae Ceausescu, it'd come out in weird ways.
Nowadays, I feel like most people who know Duffy are JoJo fans, as Distant Dreamer was the JoJo Part 6 ending. …and after what happened to her, I really hope that’s resulted in good things happening for her to help her heal from that horrifying experience she went through.
I, for one, can’t wait to hear crash’s take on Bob Newhart winning best new artist.
I was just thinking "I hope crash is still alive and we will get an end of the year list"... time to dive into this one
WELCOME BACK CRASH I MISSED YOU
Hell yeah I've been waiting for this and in December what a Christmas gift
I did have peaks into the actual list itself after the first half dropped and yeah I knew instantly that this would make for a real toughie for Crash to make.
I do really like how it’s the complete polar opposite in terms of the first half where most of these artists (the nominees and winners) were cursed. That transition was like the formation from a casual Storm into a Category 5 Hurricane.
steven seagal's jamaican dance hall recognition? in my pop music history video? probably still more interesting than anything he did in the following years
Dying Fetus album in the background for absolutely no reason *chef's kiss*
Also when i hear Duffy I just immediately think "Oh, closing theme to Stone Ocean!"
23:30 The Cheeky Girls...now that's a name I have not heard from in a looooong time.
to be honest, the biggest curse on Adele is the fact that she's a Tottenham Hotspur fan
I was not expecting hear "Acceptable in the 80's". A can of Coke to you Crash,
And for my fellow fans who get this, what BAR is Crash Thompson?
Well Reaperseeker, Crash is in red and white with some black in there as well, so he is a Kit Kat Dark 70%.
Somewhere, OOC feels. Cold chill and he knows why
This is my favorite comment so far. A winner is all of you.
I just realized most of these nominees were retail-core. Like almost one artist of each year had a song in the playlist at my workplace. I honestly miss them now that 2/3 of the playlist is Christmas music. 🙃
Just 1.5 weeks left, and I'll be free from my curse soon!
Great job brother...I'm really impressed
I actually vividly remember constantly blasting that los lonely boys album. They were so not the pick for best new artists, but holy damm- that album with "Heaven" on it is a ten for me. They definitely fall into "dad rock" but shit- they have so much passion in that joint beginning to end. My parents went to see them when I was in the womb, which is always great to half-heartedly brag about. I've definitely gone back to that well many times as a young adult (me today)
Amazing video.
I just discovered Speak For Yourself earlier this year and Imogen Heap deserved awards that year.
For reference, Steven Segal describes his band as jazz and blues.
YOU LISTEN TO "POONANI" AND TELL ME WHERE THE BLUES IS!!!
A new video from Crash. Best Birthday Ever!!!
I love this series. That is all.
I will always appreciate the effort you put into these videos.
🤘😎🤘
I didn't have to look up The Good, The Bad, and The Queen, cause I have their first album and recently had 2 of the songs off it pop up on random when I was listening to my music library. Really solid record! I also remembered they released a second album a decade later.
My kid was watching with me when Crash was talking about The Good, the Bad, and the Queen and gave me side eye when I named the band instantly upon being asked to name them.
Did not expect Karnivool to get a shout out, cool band for sure, I also didn't realize they were around for that long lol.

This is also the year when Scott Grimes, the voice of Steve Smith on American Dad, releases his second album, Livin' on the Run, which surprisingly has some bangers on it.

YO i forgot this hadn't come out yet. I know what i'm doing for the next 2 hours
Edit: Ah man I'm sorry to hear how rough this video was for you to make Crash. It's a travesty we may never see another one of these as this is in my humble opinion one of the best series of videos on the platform. Hopefully we see this return one day but hope your next video isn't as stressful for you to make.
Aaaaand welcome back, young youth!!
Can't wait for the 80s vids
You know what drives me nuts? The Jonas Brothers song Year 3000 has been like popping onto my head randomly for the last 15 years and i don't even know where I would have heard it
Not to "um actually you" because I could be wrong as I don't know all the Jonas bro's discog but did you mean the song year 3000 by busted?
*edit* turns out there was a jonas brothers song I wasn't aware off with the same title 😅 my bad
Lately on many 2000’s playlists I’ve been hearing Year 3000 more and more when I’m out and about.
Years and years ago my local rock station had a weird listener request anything goes weekend (maybe a charity drive) so I heard it for the first and only full time then. But like you, the song just pops back into my head.
Thanks for giving emery a know! My boys don't get enough love
1:07:06 "And only recently has the momentum for (Carrie Underwood's) career started to die down..."
Yea, given the recent news about Carrie, I think it's safe to say things have hit a SCREECHING halt for her, and tainted her for even a lot of her die-hards.
Yeah indeed. I just feel so sorry for Crash, giving Carrie Underwood such effusive praise only for her to effectively give him the middle finger.
Please do the next part of 2010s ❤ thanks for this video 🙌
45:55 I legitimately thought I got some Alert notification in my phone when the vid started to vibrate LOL
I always love this videos. I find so many new stuff to listen
In the UK 2004/05 was absolute the year for Scissor Sisters. Three Brit awards including album of the year.
You were absolutely right about the late 00s being the dumb era of music. That's when I started being in my old metal phase and stopped caring about new music for years.
40:21 Mannnn, that Jack’s Mannequin album is one of my all time favorites
Regarding Maroon 5, I will say that I’m one of those people who defends the first three albums (yes, even Hands All Over), and I completely disagree about Songs About Jane being a “singles album.” Deep cuts like “Shiver,” “Tangled,” “Through with You,” and “Not Coming Home” are fantastic.
Still, great to see you back!
Agreed. I was really surprised with Crash's take. There are so many hidden gems on "Songs About Jane" and I find the album flows remarkably well front-to-back.
Agreed tbh
I’m not gonna lie, if you ever plan on coming back to this series, jumping straight to the pandemic years and post pandemic years would be very interesting. The 2023 Best New Artist group resembles the really bad years from the early 90’s. It’d be interesting to see how COVID impacted the Grammys.
Sara Bareilles seems exactly like the sort of good and safe that the Grammys would like. Is she less their vibe than Nora Jones?
1:28:30 2024 was not only globally a year with way too much happening but it seems like it was in everyone's personal life aswell (at least everyone seems to tell that and my life def was)😅😅
The Cheeky Gurls are actually from the UK (not born here obviously but they live here). They got famous from appearing on a British TV talent show (Popstars) and being memorably terrible. Because of that they got a record deal and became kind of ironic/camp pop culture 'icons' here for a while.
They still pop up on British TV every now and again
The legend returns
This one was a lot darker than the last two, but I'm glad that it ended on a good note! And as much as I would love another one of these videos, I'd also say it's best to take a break for a little while haha 😅
I was born in 1996, watched Disney Channel as a kid, somehow I don’t think I ever knew that Lindsey Lohan made music. Maybe I did and forgot? Idk
Most of her music came out in the early 00s and wasn't necessarily connected to the Disney Channel in the way ppl think.
@ makes sense
We need a "success sanded them down" tier. For people who weren't cursed to fail, but cursed to succeed
I remember Gretchen Wilson. I enjoyed that album around the time it was relevant but haven't relistened recently.
About Duffy…Jesus H Christ of Nazareth, I truly hope she is recovering. Seriously, between her and Cassie, which other 2000’s one-hit wonder has suffered horrific sexual abuse?
…is Vanessa Carlton doing fine?
