First todd in the shadows releases his man of the woods trainwreckords video and now this? Oh man, I'm living in heaven
We are living in the heaven
All we need now is doseofbuckley to release the top 10 worst songs of the 2000s.
My thoughts exactly. My two favorite RUclipsrs
(Fun fact: Crash appears on "song vs song," Todd's podcast. We should expect the two to collab soon hopefully?)
On a fairly uninteresting, boring Monday, Todd, Crash, & Jim Cornette have been the highlight of the day for me.
@@mjolden Jim cornette released something today?
1:22:00 The greatest flex of any content creator.
Nothing can shock me more than learning that Robert Christgau gave Devil Without A Cause an A-.
He has a handful of weeeeeeird takes.
Ok, haven't watched the video yet but HE WHAT?!?!
I mean, his undying praise of late-career black eyed peas is even weirder to me. I remember he would even use “not as good/fun as the BEP” as a reason for giving certain pop albums bad reviews.
It doesn't surprise me - Christgau has bad taste.
@@8bitdiedieLet this be a sign to never give up on your dreams. If Robert Christgau can become a legendary music critic despite having insane taste in music, you can do anything.
The Evanescence thing: The curse was not only put on them, but in Nu Metal in general. I think the Grammy win was the genre's final nail in the coffin. The Nu Metal moment ended right there.
It's weird no one from the early half of the decade was technically cursed, and then Evanescence came and it was all downhill from here
evanescence went on to make banger after banger for like 10 years straight lol
I agree cause the only nu metal band to still be pop famous and pop popular after 2003 was Linkin Park and MM was in no way a Nu Metal album outside of like 3 or so songs so correct you are
I saw the Songs In A Minorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr gag coming and it still had me cracking up.
imo evanescence can’t be that cursed when the greatest fanfiction ever written was named after one of their songs. truly the mark of success.
they had two more no.1 albums and their latest album hit the top spot on rock album chart. This is "kinda cursed" compared to that Shelby Lyme?
I had no idea who Katy Hudson was so I looked it up and when I say my jaw dropped when THAT info hit me eyeballs. Cannot wait to see how the next chapter of this retrospective plays out.
You're the first person i've seen who didn't know who she turned into
What’s crazy to me is she was never nominated for best new artist and she has yet to win a single Grammy
There's always a first time for everything, I guess
Did the same thing happen with "Kara's Flowers"?
@@stephenpaules3543 I have no clue if maroon 5 has any Grammy nominations or wins nor do i care
"Yeah man, this like a not racist Eric Clapton, I can vibe to this" is an incredible endorsement of early Susan Tedeschi.
FYI, Susan's politics are the exact opposite of Clapton's
Coincidentally I just learned who Susan Tedeschi was this week because Fender just released a signature Telecaster for her, based on that green one right there.
I found out about her thanks to this video & she honestly doesn't seem like a bad artist. I might check out her music after watching this
@@rayanna7188 Check out the Tedeschi Trucks Band, with Derek trucks
I've been aware of Susan Tedeschi for a while now...
...not because of her music, but because she does a lot of stuff with my favourite NFL team
I was wondering the whole 2001 segment why Linkin Park wasn't being mentioned since Hybrid Theory came out in 2000, but when they came up in the 2002 segment, I was like "I knew you'd make a good call nominating them since that album defined the early 00's".
And I also gave a standing ovation when Bring Me to Life started playing.
The 2000s are a massive blind spot for me because I was in music school. When you're a music major, you don't listen to new popular music because you're way too busy learning about every other type of music and playing the same pieces over and over again until you get them right. I have had to learn about this decade almost entirely via video essays.
Didn’t really miss out lol
@@mike04574 Most of the good songs millennials are so nostalgic for and the few artists here I love (Linkin Park, Gorillaz, Evanescence, Nelly Furtado) probably didn’t play much at the time. 99% of the time it would probably play NickelBack or some slow boring ballad songs made by One Hit Wonder bands (think The Reason, or Wherever

(Less Outkast, more Ja Rule 😔)
@@jasminealce834 I worked for a hotel shortly after I graduated and I remember the lobby speakers had way too much Nickelback. I think they played one every hour at minimum. And this wasn't even in Canada.
@@cyanmanta Just goes to show how much I understand the Nickelback hate after finding out how overplayed they actually were.
I’ll say this: the Michelle Branch Santana song written by the New Radicals’ Gregg A. (Which was supposed to have been sang originally by Tina Turner and later Macy Gray) is pretty good
That song is the only one I ever knew from Branch tbh. It was everywhere in my country back then
@@KremBotop Yeah, I wasn’t yet in existence, but it’s the only song I’ve ever heard by her, that was played here

*Hits subscribe button so hard I may have cracked my screen protector on my phone!* 🤣
An entire video with only one Kinda Cursed is a pretty good run
I’ve already seen the BNA winners for 05-09 and hooooo boy… that’s gonna get… interesting…
Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé weren't eligible for obvious reasons bro hahaha. Beyoncé had already won Grammys before her solo career. Great video!
ashanti and ja rule were HUGE in urban areas that year. my high school could not get enough of ashanti. that sound being everywhere, they basically popularized it.
Ja Rule cracked the "thugs need love too" code. Guys like Crash and Todd really show their blindspots when it comes to hiphop.
I paused the video. I'm guessing by the footage, shelby lynn debuted in the late 80s. Which is insane already.
Edit: ARE YOU KIDDING? I GOT IT RIGHT?
By the way, i understand your confusion over Jill Scott, Macy Gray, India Arie, Heather Headley nominations but Ashanti dominated her rookie year. Foolish was everywhere.
Can you believe that The Grammys had the balls not to nominate a Karen?
Come on, I had to make that joke.
I love Yeah Yeah Yeahs too.
The BIGGEST 2000 (99) Best New Artist snub: EMINEM
As a Canadian who lived through the Freedumb Convoy, I deeply appreciated the Ram Ranch reference!
It wasn't their debut, but I was kinda surprised you didn't mention that SOAD dropped Toxicity in 2001, for as stinky as that year may have been, that's one of the albums that kept it from being a true stinker.
Hey, it's not like non-debuting artists stopped the Grammys from nominating people before, so it could've had a chance
Toxicity was actually slated to be a nominee, but they turned down the nomination
Counterpoint: 2001 wasn't all dross. That was also the year we got _Toxicity, Amnesiac,_ and motherf**king _Lateralus._
However, to your points about Norah Jones... I'm not going to argue that she's the most exciting artist in the world, or that she necessarily deserved to sweep the Grammys like that. Hell, that's not my type of music either. But I do think it's worth remembering the context of the culture during that time period. See, there's a _reason_ that the sonic equivalent of Ambien was so appealing in 2002, of all years. I distinctly remember what things were like immediately post-9/11. I remember the American flags everywhere. I remember the genuine sense of togetherness (at least until it was squandered in the Iraq War and the polarization worsened in the decades since). And I also remember the way that, for a period of about 1-2 years, Americans' popular culture tastes suddenly became (in general) a _lot_ more reserved, introspective, and in need of some sense of stability. The party of the 80s and 90s was over, and 2002 was the hangover. So we got both Enrique Iglesias *and* the duo of Chad Kroeger/Josey Scott each having a massive hit titled "Hero", and even _Enya_ had her biggest hit in over a decade. People were in shock and in mourning, and gentle, calming music was a big part of the healing process for a lot of them. So it really doesn't surprise me one bit that an album like _Come Away with Me_ would sweep the Grammys that year-- that album is about as inoffensive and nonconfrontational as they get. If there was _any_ year in recent American history that I genuinely don't fault the Grammys for playing it safe, it's 2002.
💯💯💯 I see that explanation it makes sense
@@tylerhackner9731 2001 was not a great year for music, but I’ll thank it for giving Linkin Park, Gorillaz, and my personal favorite artist of all time Nelly Furtado ⭐️

I feel you Crash, with your Yeah Yeah Yeah pick. TV On The Radio’s debut album was also in 2004.
Man, seeing Crash talk about Crazy Town after finding out about Shifty today...
My god was the wait WORTH IT Crash. This series of videos is one of if not the best and most underrated series on RUclips PERIOD. Seriously if this became the only series of videos you ever did i'd be here for ALL OF IT.
I’m still into Michelle Branch honestly
Olivia Rodrigo reminds me how much I miss her. Like her, she's ANOTHER half-Asian American pop rock chick who ALSO released HER debut single about romance that became the biggest hit of her career AND songwriting AND album debut at just 18, which was just 20 YEARS PRIOR!!! Not to mention, Michelle ALSO paved the path for other pop rock teen artists to follow, including Avril a year later! She's the only Asian American music act I can think of who crossed over between pop, country and adult contemporary charts. And I just finished listening to what should've been her 2010s follow-up album West Coast Time and it sounded like we were robbed of hearing her natural evolution into a music vet. I then listened to her most recent album which was pretty good! Imo, talent means nothing to have a successful career if you don't have just as strong of a management team. Taylor should bless her lucky stars she has one. Especially since she herself idolized Michelle Branch, owning a blue guitar because of her and even covering THIS SONG at Michelle's birthstate of Arizona!
Screw her label for ruining her career!
Todd in the Shadows released his last Song Vs Song episode on RUclips. And I wanted to make some suggestions.
Two of my suggestions were All You Wanted Vs I'm With You or Are You Happy Now? vs My Happy Ending
Two great songs from two different rocker girls who were growing from teenhood to adulthood at the same time but fell off for different but still sad reasons.
As someone who followed Crash since around 2016, it is crazy to see him say something nice about Papa Roach...
But as someone who likes a lot of Papa Roach's music, I am happy to hear it.
BABE WAKE UP!
CRASH IS BACK!

WHY DID I LITERALLY PREDICT EXACTLY WHAT SONG IT WAS LMAO
Awesome to see you again, dude. Awesome doggo too.
I know you mentioned it in the last one, but the White Stripes “broke through” in 2001 with White Blood Cells, and I think they would’ve been a good contender, especially in a year with “Is This It”. I just really love the White Stripes
Norah Jones won so hard, she passed the curse to Avril Lavigne
😂But seriously, is there a bigger "The Grammys are out of touch" moment than Norah Jones dominating the field in 2002-2003. Justified, The Eminem Show, Talib's Quality, Vanessa Carlton's debut, The Dixie Chicks and so much more that received acclaim and captured the zeitgeist and they went with the safe jazz record.
No hate to Norah Jones, but c'mon.
@@joeynoname3109 I'd argue Eminem, Vanessa Carlton and even Dixie Chicks in hindsight would have been cursed picks. Em has fallen off hard since, The Chicks would wind up being blacklisted by country music establishment for daring to speak out against a war in Iraq and Vanessa Carlton hasn't been relevant since 2002
@@juliekeast6175 yeah that's a fair argument. But that's hindsight being 20/20. We would know what we knew is 2003. Just like how nobody in 1999 could've predicted how Lauryn Hill would've turned out.
@@joeynoname3109norahs better than Vanessa Carlton and Dixie chicks
Watching this the day after it was released. On 2000. All I have to say, RIP Shifty Shell Shock. May not be a huge fan of Crazy Town, but 49 is too young and a reminder that life’s too short.
Drugs can be a real ass-kicker. Not saying that's what caused his death, but knowing his history, it wouldn't surprise me if, after years of drug ab*se, his health was just shot and couldn't support him.
Okay, as someone who LOVES Evanescence to pieces… calling Amy a “Ren-Fair Goth Mom” is pretty funny to me.
Also, I don’t really call them “nu-metal”. They’re more goth metal to me.
I'd at least call them nu metal-adjacent, or nu with a goth twist. Whatever the case I'm pretty sure just about every teen with The Sickness and Hybrid Theory in their CD collection also had Fallen in there too.
- Hybrid Theory was absolutely a cultural reset, on the level of Nevermind imho.
- I maintain that Michelle Branch was most interesting when she was making country music.
- I actually have heard that Katy Hudson album and believe it or not it's not bad? Kind of Fiona Apple vibes iirc, and the lyrics aren't too cringeworthy by CCM standards
If 7:44 doesn’t convince you people to like this video then we have failed humanity.
Anyway all joking aside the Second half of the 2000’s decade is going to be an even more interesting (& sometimes tragic) one to follow up with. Crash is back!

Re: Sufjan
If anyone tells you that A Sun Came is not his worst record, you are talking to a liar. However, I would howl with laughter if the album with ‘super sexy woman’ on it would have been nominated for a Grammy. I wanna live in that world so bad.
A Sun Came is a solid album, arguably underrated, but it's easily one of Sufjan's strangest and was and is far too experimental and rough around the edges to have gotten that kind of Grammy nod, especially in 2000. Like, let's set aside how goofy "Super Sexy Woman" is and talk about how this record has one of his darkest songs ("Kill") as the second half of its big emotional climax and ends with "Satan's Saxophones". Or how there are like four different pitched-up joke interludes. It's a very odd record!
Very odd record for sure, and honestly I’d say it’s one of the strangest debut albums from any artist I think I have ever heard. He really did throw everything at the wall for his first go at it, and even when compared to the rest of his discography it really does stand out.
Is it sad that I kinda like super sexy woman. It’s awful, for sure, but it sounds like a Ween deep cut.
Oh so it's like a case of Pablo Honey effect except for real?
@@eliasmg9144 It’s more like… Pablo Honey is a pretty normal alt-rock record for the time with a handful of really solid tunes and one insane standout single, whereas A Sun Came is a highly experimental record with both some of the funniest and most depressing songs said artist would ever release but also doesn’t quite live up to the extremely high standards that that artist would set later. It’s arguably more comparable to David Bowie’s first self-titled or Sonic Youth’s really early work: There is some classic material in there, but it’s all over the place and very weird. (Hell, Sufjan even has the same “two non-indicative early records which nonetheless echo throughout a musician’s career” thing going on that Bowie and SY do: His sophomore record, Enjoy Your Rabbit, is a symphonic breakcore/IDM/glitch record with almost no vocals.)
Norah Jones is still amazing to this day & she’s one of my favorite artists. And I’m an older millennial
Finally Finally I been waiting for this 3rd part for a long time love this series
I'm that Norah Jones fan! I'm genuinely excited when she drops new music and I even check out her podcast! I unapologetically love her stuff and she consistently makes my top twenty five songs of the year!
Hell yeah
shit, how have i not discovered this channel before? really cool idea for a series and it shows that you put a lot of effort into this!
seeing love addict made me realize it's probably my worst guilty pleasure ever, thanks Crash
Thank you so much for this! I was so excited when I saw this and it was fantastic. Definitely worth the wait. Also, I like the restructuring of the format where you hold off on saying who won, it's really fun!
The fact that Ill Nino's debut wasn't even considered for the 2002 BNA is absolutely unforgivable.
always happy to see the lovable Crash again in my sub feed :D

The way I almost *SHIT MY PANTS* when I heard this come up at work... I've been singing FoW's praises for literal years and they were honestly one of the last acts I expected to get a Grammy nomination, but I am 100% here for it.
Jill Scott and India Arie both deserved their nominations. Calling them a safe choice is so lame. Everything doesn’t have to be rock or yt hip hop. They sang NeoSoul records. Old yt men have to be stopped 🤦♂️
Alfo media falls under this too, shit's annoying
Hey crash, I’ve been a fan since 2015 on different accounts. Before I even start the video, I wanna tell you that your sets have ALWAYS been on point. I don’t think I can recall any other music content creator with as good of sets as you’ve consistently had throughout your time on RUclips. Thank you for your effort, it is NOT unnoticed.
The TBS mentions made me very, very happy. Thank you so much for mentioning my face band, they deserve more recognition! ❤
Great video but the mic quality was rough on this one
I am very happy that you mentioned Shinedown debut in 2003. I am very surprised that they have never been nominated for Grammy.
New Crash Thompson content?!?! Sooo innnn
Not what this video is about but I wanted to say that I appreciate your openness. It is always comforting to discover that a creator I like is like me in that regard. I am still seeking the courage to open that door.
I actually got introduced to Norah Jones when she did the song Everybody Needs a Best Friend from Ted and I actually got into her music from there.
Also saying Sean Paul sounds like King Julien from Madagascar 😂
Not gonna lie, Avril Lavigne was one of my first childhood crushes and I quickly got into Let Go despite being quite younger than the album's target audience. So I'm glad she got that nomination.
R.I.P. shifty shellshock from crazy town
I actually screamed when I saw that puppy.
How the hell Crash Thompson forgot about Foolish by Ashanti? Baby, Baby, Baby wasn't even her biggest song , Foolish was.
1:02:38 IIRC ppl being mad at Alicia for the makeup thing was moreso about her attitude than the act itself. She came off “holier than thou” & when ppl noticed that she actually was wearing a bit of “no makeup-makeup” the whole time they were quick to call her dishonest. There was also some decent discussion on colorism in the music industry & how lightskinned women are allotted more space to make decisions like Alicia’s (tho this ofc isn’t her fault). Even taking all that into account it was admittedly overblown in hindsight
NEW FOUND GLORY MENTIONED 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Being Ravi Shankar's kid, I feel it was a nepo-baby award when Norah Jones got all her awards that year.
Welcome back Crash‼️💯😎🎧👍🏾🔥
You need to do more of these!!
35:11 You just blew my mind, this is insane
I have a few comments to make about the 03 Grammys. First of all, I’m not surprised at all that Ashanti was nominated. She was all over the top 40 radio in 2002, both with her own stuff and as a featured artist on other rapper’s songs. She actually saved a couple of Ja Rule’s Cormier radio jits just by being there.
Also, “Be Not Nobody” was a really good debut for Vanessa Carlton. I agree she definitely deserved a nod that year.
Yes, i missed your videos Crash. I hope you'll do 2010's next. That was the real curse of the Grammys.
Love the channel bruh. MORE.
Just wanted to say this is a really well done video, really love this series. Hope whatever series you do next has as good a qualify as these Grammy Curse videos has.
Hm. It feels like there's a big blindspot for R&B in your videos. The Jill Scott, India Arie and Ashanti comments kind of bear this out.
2001-02 was a big year for Ashanti. She ended up with 3 songs in the top 10 at the same time(damn near unheard of before streaming) and her album sold gangbusters. Ashanti was so huge that when Beyoncé released her solo debut in 03', a critic famously named his review "Solo Beyoncé: She's No Ashanti".
Great videos otherwise.
Thank you for pointing this out. I love Crash but yeah it’s clear he’s not very into the genre, or at least wasn’t at the time
@@tylerhackner9731 Yea. I'm finding that to be pretty common with music critics in this space. Still like hearing the critiques and all that though.
Foolish is a classic, and honestly one of the most unique hit songs of the time!
Crash makes great videos but most of the youtube music critics seem to...lack a lot of the knowledge of R&B of that period.
Welcome back, you have been missed.
59:38 No, you're not wrong. Sinner is leagues above every other Drowning Pool album.
In 2002/2003 I got down with both Norah Jones' Come Away With Me and Bad Religion's Process of Belief. We exist Crash, oh we exist. Additionally, how can we discuss 2001 without mentioning Jimmy Eat World's Bleed American, Thursday's Full Collapse, Saves the Day's Stay What You Are, Further Seems Forever's debut The Moon is Down, Dashboard's Places You Have Come to Fear the Most (what a year for Chris Carrabba), hell even give notorious scene creep Jesse Lacey and Brand New's Your Favorite Weapon some mention for blowing the fuck up that year. 2001 emo walked to '02 could soar. Welcome back, always a good day when I get to spend some quality time with Crash.
Welcome back, just in time for Pride, missed ya lots
I was rewatching in loop the previous videos. I'm happy that I can now watch this new video for at least 100000 times.
That said, thank you. You're one of the people that made me obsess to music even further
This is going to sound wild coming from me if you know me, but Norah Jones' Come Away With Me actually has a very special place in my heart. My mom used to play it in the car a lot when I was in late elementary/early middle school, and it's stuck with me on a very deep personal level in a way that I never really thought about until you started playing those instrumentals in the background and I *immediately* got in my feelings realising how many lyrics I knew by heart. Excellent little comfort record. I should listen to more of her work.
love ya Crash, i've been watching for I think 7 years now, and it always makes my day whenever you drop a new vid, worth the wait every single time
"she's not even an ashanti" sounds like quite the insult
not sure if it is, but it feels ike one :D
that had me gigglin'
My Shelby Lynn guess is funny because at first I thought 1989 but then I figured that was too recent so I pushed back to 1982
Edit: and turns out my first guess was correct! Isn't it funny how the gut feeling can be better than the second guess sometimes. Really funny how I overshot (undershot?) that one.
I wonder if that's a record, regardless. The one other artist I can think of off the top of my head who starting making music long before their Best New Artist nod is Japanese Breakfast, Michelle Zauner's project which started in 2013 and released its debut in 2016, five years before Jubilee (which, granted, was JB's first album to chart on the Billboard 200) garnered her a Best New Artist nod.
The legend returns 🔥
I was a longtime Shelby Lynne fan and I was like "New Artist?"
Alright, if you can make a living off flipping off your old highschool, you know you’re doing something right.
Great to see you again Crash! We missed you man. And the Spiritual Machines in the back is peak class
It feels weird to have it there in a video about "new artists" when it's take number four, though. Same with The Amalgamut on the other side.
Some of the greatest albums of all time came out in 2001 too, very mixed year
If you got that Drab Majesty shirt at a recent Slowdive show… hell yeah brother, gang
I really hate the "aughts" and "noughties" as names,
With the exception of maybe the 1920s we don't give decades dumb neat nicknames so why did the 2000s get 2 popular dumb nicknames?
So glad you’re back!
I was -3 in 99, and an early 2000s baby, and I wish I could’ve been older around this time
I laughed so hard when he started making fun of his school!
I love this series so much. So happy to see it continue

Crash, I think your microphone is off or something, there's a lot of static in your voice.
Yep, it's called clipping. It happens when your microphone is too high and it distorts your voice. That's the very basic description anyway.
Great. 9/11 is officially cannon in the Crash Cinematic Universe 🥺
Another great video. You're totally underrated ma dude☺️ love the videos.
Regarding Evanescence, I'm reminded of the meme that more or less goes like "God made me unwell because he knew I would be too powerful if I was stable." Amy and the band have been successful, sure, but think of the potential if they weren't dealing with all that turbulence over the years.
Ayy i'm late but i'm finally here, after a soulcrushing day at work. Thanks, Crash, i needed this.
i was so ready to be mad at Linkin Park not getting the Grammy, but then i was like "yeah, i can't be mad at this."
