      I think that's just because they're a European band. Sometimes they slip through the cracks and have an overseas hit, and then disappear again. But back home their popularity never stopped.

    So weird to think that Madness are a 1 or 2 hit wonder in the US. But here in the UK they still sell out arenas. And i can vouch for how awesome it is to see them in that setting. Just pure happiness and love from thousands of people who are singing along to every word in every song.

  • @lh757
    @lh757 3 года назад +96

    As a UK watcher, I appreciate you sticking up for Madness here, Crash. I get the impression they're viewed as nothing more than a novelty stateside but they were so much more. Without Madness, there might not have been bands like Less Than Jake or Sublime but they get unfairly judged as the jokesters who did Our House and as much as I love that song, they have a lot of other great songs too. Songs like One Step Beyond, My Girl, Embarrassment, Baggy Trousers, Wings of a Dove, Michael Caine, The Sun and the Rain, The Prince, Night Boat to Cairo and especially House of Fun are very fondly remembered in the UK so hopefully you've encouraged a few people to dig into the band beyond their entry level US hits.

They deserve way more love than just that one SNL skit, especially since I found out not long ago that they have a new album coming out this October.

    Thank you so much for giving love to Turnstall, Madness, PUSA, Vega (although I'm surprised you didn't mention her 'I can't believe she produced this' album 99.9F), and BNL. I will say in regards to the latter that I think the band did start to suffer after MAROON, and has never been the same once Page 'left' the group. There's a bite to BNL prior to the departure that just isn't there anymore, and I mourn the passing of that band that made those first six or seven albums....

    My dad was in college in the 80s, so he got pretty into stuff like English Beat, The Specials, Madness, and other 2-tone ska groups, as well as stuff like Television and Talking Heads. I actually first learned about “college rock” from him

    • @evanwright9016
      @evanwright9016 9 месяцев назад

      You're extremely lucky. My dad was a bluegrass player (was since the age of 14). So my earliest memories of music were the last thing anyone outside of 70 year-olds in Kentucky in 2001-2005 was hip to (he was in his early-30s at the time, surprisingly). Walking into my house was like stepping into a time warp. But then again, if I had a father that was deep into the college scene, I would've resented him for it, too.

    As someone who has had to deal with depression pretty much all my life, "Pinch Me" is a very important song to me. I have always read it as a song about fatigue and apathy and just having problems getting up and trying to be productive on a day-by-day basis. It's not just "One Week" 2.0 for me. But we all read different things in any given piece of media.

    • @beautifulmidnight
      @beautifulmidnight Год назад

      ‘A Choppy, Yet Sincere Apology’ by Riverboat Gamblers is my depression song. I’ve actually never thought of Pinch Me in that way but gave it a listen and I can definitely see it. BNL did a song called When I Fall off their (ridiculously underappreciated) album Born on a Pirate Ship that hits those same notes too.

    I almost had a heart attack when Crowded House came up as I truly love that band but yeah, I really recommend people also check out Crowded House's 2007 album "Time On Earth" and their 2010 album "Intriguer" along with the four earlier albums..check out all six studio albums..lol... I rate "Woodface" as Crowded House's best album (The band brought Neil Finn's brother Tim on board for that one) just ahead of the debut album.
    Deepcuts from Crowded House albums I recommend, one from each album:
    "Love You Til the Day I Die" (from "Crowded House")
    "Whispers and Moans" (from "Woodface")
    "In My Command" (From "Together Alone")
    "Never Be The Same" (From "Temple of Low Men")
    "Silent House" (The song Neil co wrote for the Dixie Chicks but it also ended up on "Time On Earth")
    "Archer's Arrows" (from "Intriguer")
    Fun Fact "Better Be Home Soon" was Crowded House's biggest hit in Australia, it peaked at number two on the Australian singles chart in 1988. Beaten to number one by John Farnham's "Age of Reason". "Don't Dream It's Over" would only peak at number eight in 1987.
    I think there was some talk of new music from the band a few months ago, they were hinting at it when they announced their now sadly postponed European tour dates due to the pandemic so yeah Crowded House are still around.
    Also worth pointing out another Aussie act called Icehouse had a hit in the late 80s with "Electric Blue"

    Keeping up with the subject of Madness, I have to mention their song The Liberty of Norton Folgate which honestly at 10 minutes proved to me that they were more than an novelty act. The fact that this song and it's equally great album of the same title came out decades after their prime showed how great they could still be.

    Technically Fuel are a two hit wonder because both Shimmer and Hemorrhage (In My Hands) were highly successful songs. But they also had Bad Day and Falls On Me which were moderately known, and also Won't Back Down, Quarter and Sunburn which were featured in the soundtracks to Daredevil, Need For Speed Underground, NASCAR Thunder and Scream 3. But those two songs still ended up being their most popular.

    When I heard Blue Öyster Cult had another hit beyond Don't Fear The Reaper, I thought it'd be Godzilla. That seems to be the other song by them that most people know. Heck, it even got a cover for the Godzilla: King Of The Monsters soundtrack... with Serj Tankian of System of a Down doing the vocals! Seriously, look that cover up, it's one of those I'd say can compete with the original.
    And then I looked it up and... it never even charted at all. Yea, this seems to be a similar situation with Modern English's I Melt With You, where everyone knows that song and remembers it as a classic, yet it wasn't actually a hit when it was released.
