    Just so you know, Crispy - "harem anime" is the very base concept behind the TTRPG "Maid". Of course, it is a comedy game, where the characters are randomly rolled and can be anything from a yakuza princess to an actual bona fide catgirl to a boy in drag - with the only proviso that they are ALL maids. They work for the "master of the mansion", and often don't even see him for whole sessions, but the fact that they're Maids (capital M) makes them literally invincible. They can do anything, they can BE anything... but mostly they can make each other's life a living hell. And that's fun.
    Because the game is not supposed to be taken seriously - and the Master, being just as a mysterious figure as Charlie (from Charlie's Angels) has absolutely no say on that. He might show up, he might hug a maid, he might scold another - but when push comes to shove he's an absolute and total wimp. Why else would he need a whole troop of maids that can take on Godzilla and WIN?
    So yeah, harem TTRPGs can be done... if they're done the right way.

      Also in Maid the Master doesn't have to be a wimp however in the book (at least the pdf I got) it says that should only be with experienced DMs also you forgot the main mission of the TTRPG for the Master to get with one of the maids this leads to many hijinks cause if your character is on a date with the master they can sabotage and its pretty funny.
      Highlights from games of mine.
      1: One maid tried to convince a gullable and Naive maid that the Master was gay and wouldn't go with her. the Naive maid then went got drunk and basically Made a death trap/conversion therapy the master which was basically the plot of a rick and morty episode. The maids had to stop it.
      2: A maid had a date with the Master. The maids made a whole FAKE resturant for the master to see and to so a date there. The maids had disguises and fake names but the employees all thought it was real and kind of confused why a rotund Italian man is geeking over a bishonen.
      3: Alien queen got the master as he was basically space jesus. Whole saga happened and then the master decided that he will marry everyone because he used a clone machine on board.

    From what I've heard, the thing about Phoenix and Miles is that the writers "accidentally" made one of the gayest stories ever between them in the first game (to the point that there are rumors it's a copy paste from a yaoi manga, no idea whether they're true or not) and when players took notice of it, the writers then went "ooooh. that's funny. let's add material to that in every game." so anyway, between Phoenix calling Miles "daddy" at some point and them going to Phoenix's adopted daughter's shows together they're clearly meant to be shown as having a domestic life together that's hinted as being romantic but never explicitly.
    However it is true that Franziska and Miles are adopted siblings and never show any romantic inclination towards one another and I think the issue is more that ; it's that the guy will see a relationship hinted as being gay by the writers and nope out of it so hard he will instead go straight to incest so it's 'at least' not gay.

    Of the numerous problems in the Harem Anime game I think the most interesting was the OP's lack of buy in on the concept which caused them to act like a bad player.
    It was explained that this would be a campaign with a central mechanic that operated off of a zero sum game where PC's competed for an NPC's affection. And they played a character who was both incapable and uninterested in engaging in those activities. I would liken this to the player who insists on being the humble librarian in a standard D&D campaign. Sure, they're a wizard, but they're a wizard who never wants to leave their library and they're describing the horror story of how the party keeps going on adventures. They didn't play the game they signed up for, but rather hoped that the DM would redirect his campaign into a different genre where they would be the chosen one.

    • @GreatestRedPanda
      @GreatestRedPanda 3 месяца назад +34

      I was thinking this too. Regardless of what you think of the campaign concept, the fact that OP joined and agreed to play, then proceeded to do everything in their power to avoid engaging with the core concept of the game, then became upset that the game didn't adjust for them is a bit ridiculous.

    • @ItsJustLom
      @ItsJustLom 3 месяца назад +26

      This. I'm sorry that they had a bad time, but I don’t advise making a character that doesn't have a reason to engage in the plot, much less one that has reasons to *avoid* the plot.
      It still sucks they were getting talked over. It's hard to say if, honestly, even if they played a more proactive character that they wouldn't have run jnto the same problems of being overshadowed.
      Edit: Also, I am glad Sydney got a chance to be fleshed out in a story - sometimes characters might not be great for rp, but are still good characters that would fit more in a novel/short story. :)

    For the griffins...
    Persuasion is not mind control. Even with a natural 20. A perfect persuasion roll means your character is as persuasive as they can be given the circumstances. If keeping her griffins safe is a core value of the NPC, no level of persuasion not involving magical brainwashing is going to convince her to send them into battle.
    ...on the other hand, the DM decides where the lines are, so if they think that coming up with flying combat mechanics on the fly is a good challenge and might lead to some epic and memorable moments for the whole table? Go for it! Maybe the griffin keeper always secretly dreamed of seeing her babies do something grand and heroic and the bard convinced her to let that win out over her protectiveness.

    I ran a game where the PCs were also doing a role-play. One of my old old characters had been ascended to godhood like 15 years ago real-time, and we had a number of characters from that era we wanted to play with again. So... here's what happened.
    My divine character was stressing the fuck out. She was not enjoying her divine status. The pressure was putting her in a bad mental place. She wanted to go back to the "good old days" (which in itself is humorous because during those old days she was often more frustrated with events, but rose-tinted glasses and all). So, she gathered her old friends together and put forward an idea. Everyone who be able to create avatars they would embody, starting at level 1, and go on an adventure on this other world they had no connections to. She would herself join them (as an NPC as far as I was concerned, and as a PC as far as she was concerned) with her own abilities locked down to a similar level 1 character, and everyone else could either make themselves as level 1 PCs, or she could make new characters with different classes and/or races for them. Their pick. Some of the PCs chose to go as themselves, and others created new characters for them to be. They even could create some back-stories for themselves and the god would "adjust" that world's recent history slightly to fit them in. If they died in the game, they popped back to their original bodies to either wait for a rez to get back in or create a new character and re-enter the game as someone else.
    It was fun. The big difference between this and the story in the video is that the characters remembered their own lives. What was funny was that sometimes the PCs who role-played different classes would go into battle forgetting they had swapped classes in the game. So you had some of them going off of "muscle memory" charging in when they weren't fighters anymore. Or you'd have the party at a locked door with one of them saying "Gee, it's a shame we don't have anybody who knows how to pick locks." They'd then look at the now-party rogue who would just nod for a few minutes before getting hit off the back of the head and had to be reminded. The comedy was fun as hell, and it was great to play with old characters in a completely new set of situations with different abilities, which made it fresh at the same time.
    Even though that goddess finished that campaign. The concept of "the game" in the game is still going. There have been more spins done on it. For example, a bunch of characters signed up to go in, but they did so separately, so when the game started, the PCs "in game" met, but they didn't know who they were outside of the game, and several actually knew each other - but they didn't realize that during the adventure, at least for a long while. I even had one PC of mine (from when I was a player years ago) that was hiding from powers outside of the game sneak into one game as a PC, but to keep his head low, he pretended to be an NPC in the adventure. It was only just this week that his identity was discovered by another PC in the game. That was fun, since I spent a year and a half out-of-game pretending he was literally an NPC from a pre-fab adventure, while occasionally dropping a hint or two (like when a PC died and popped out of the game briefly, the number of PCs mentioned to him being in the game was off). Another issue is that some NPCs in the world are picking up on that something is off with these adventurers coming in various places. Also former PC characters continue to live on the world after their "players" leave. One figured things out to the point of starting to hunt down her player ("wait, why did my friends often call me by a wrong name, and why for the last five months have I not called them out on it?"). There's been a ton of potential with this concept, and with real-world players that are into it, it works very well.
    I know some of this sounds confusing, but that's because I have three layers to describe things to you with: the real-world, the characters in the game, and the game in the game. But when you're playing it, your characters just have themselves and the game, and most of the time they're just playing the game while occasionally making what (for them) are meta comments. In practice, it really isn't confusing at all.

    @chaindragon886 3 месяца назад +4

    As for the Harem story I actually had to go back and relisten to the story to get my thoughts together on this, I understand that the OP was new and not very comfortable with the concept and there were definitely issues with the DM. But OP literally made a "that character" that refuses to engage with the party or what passed for an "adventure".
    Fish out of water characters are fine but require constant work on the part of the player actively working with the DM and other players to keep the character involved. You can't just leave it all on the DM to cater the whole story to constantly throwing out hooks to drag your character kicking and screaming back into the plot. It's honestly not fair to the other players who are actively in and out of character engaging with the story and world.
    I have considered playing those types of characters myself. But realized that the amount of work and emotional drain of playing the character against the story while keeping them firmly a part of it not apart from it, would kill my motivation to play the character.

No matter how weird one might find the premise. Though, the true fail in all that is the DM not vetoing that character right from the start and making it clear that it simply didn't fit the idea they were going for. From there, it was both sides ignoring the issue and try to force the other side to accept how they wanted things to go. How things then went down in the end was completely wrong, of course. Leaving the player just hanging and waste their time by not communicating things is just bad form. Though it fits the theme of both sides not properly talking with each other...

I'm the kinda guy who tries to give players openings to say "hey something came up, cant make it" by making like several announcements on session days (think "session begins in X hours") on discord. So imagine the frustration of doing that and still have several situations where 2 or 3 people don't show up or mention anything before hand.

    The "On The Fly" segment struck home for me. We've been nearly exclusively theater of the mind for almost four decades and I have learned to become very good at the rule of cool and making things work in such a way that the players enjoy.
    The "seven hour games" comment made me laugh because we've played games that long or longer. The systems were AD&D editions 1 and 2. I once DM a completely improved game that lasted 15 hours, starting at midnight. Man, I miss being young and irresponsible...

    You know, I learned early on when I took up dnd as a hobby to insist that my fellow players and dm run the session without me. So long as my character wasn’t at the center of the current events (like their own arc is in progress) or it wasn’t something that we desperately needed everyone to participate in, I really pushed for making sure a session went on anyway and handed over my character for the dm, or some other trusted player, to run. And yes, I would trust another person with my character in the event my character and their skills and magic was needed. I tend to build my characters very solidly into a niche the party tends to need so this is something that means my character needs to be run anyway, regardless of me being there. Honestly the only time this was an issue was when I handed my cleric over to the dm and….he forgot I never gave my character guidance….and he let the entire party use guidance during the session I wasn’t there. Honestly it was more hilarious than anything. I turn up the next session and someone asks me for guidance and I was like “…what are you talking about? I don’t have that cantrip.” And this is when I learn what the dm did. He was pretty embarrassed because he is a very experienced dm and I did clear all of my spell list and choices by him. I get it though. It’s pretty routine to take that cantrip but I had chosen a different one for flavor reasons and so, with all the spinning plates he has to run in a session, he fell back on the idea of what is “normal” to take for a cleric. Anyway! Usually my DM’s prefer I not miss a session and I get it. While I am the chaotic one who always has some mischief up my sleeves, I’m also the one who adds some sanity to the group, keeps things from going too crazy and off the rails, and am the main note taker. Sure, I have my schemes but I tend to have them well laid out that the dm isn’t scrambling and other players have their reminders to, oh I don’t know, remember they have high insight or perception and get prodded into asking for a check? Or that they have this or that spell? I don’t run anyone else’s character ever but I’m usually the one who offers up knowledge on command. Uh…this is because I’m adhd and I tend to deep dive into my hobbies so…know them pretty thoroughly and…um…😅 also I can memorize pretty much anything I read? It doesn’t always work perfectly because adhd but you would probably be surprised but how much I still retain and can recall on command. And since more of the rule book is reading (I say most because there is also that unspoken rules aspect to playing) and I take good notes and pretty much memorize how my DMs tend to prefer to lean in their rulings, well…yeah, I’m used as a resource more often than not. Honestly, the one time I missed an entire week of sessions (I play at multiple tables a week, yes I know how insane I sound) I returned to absolute mayhem for every single one. I did eavesdrop on a few but I wasn’t really able to jump online for any beyond that (spending time out and about with someone in public who was visiting so I would use headphones while I would wait or stuff like that, times where I wasn’t needed for full attention). Anyway, one of the craziest was probably the group who just…stumbled straight into combat because they leapt before they looked. My dm luckily knows how to run my character so they took the brunt of it but I came back to my fighter without his action surge and second wind, and missing some fighting spirits and a good chunk of health. And considering I heard later about tanking some major crits because I was covering for the cleric, that was pretty good. Exactly how the character is meant to be run in combat. But yeah, I may have had a talk to the player who did that to clarify he could easily have had me return to a totally dead character which seems to have stuck with him as we are both legacy players of this campaign and are around level 9 now (almost 10) and he really adores my character both in combat and rp. He seems to have taken to heart to be more careful. I did play off, in character, that my character chased his around for a bit before grappling him for a noogie in revenge for the lack of caution which seems to have shown him no hard feelings. And there isn’t. I just worry when I’m gone because I’m usually the insightful and high perception person and have an irl 6th sense about storybeats that slip past others but my dm’s tend to rely on for me to use for the party. Anyway, enough babble from me.

    The 7 hour long sessions feel like a very German thing to do. Like. If we play, we might as well play for the whole day.
    I've actually started with The Dark Eye, we played Saturdays and some sessions could go up to 12 hours. One of the players fell asleep regularly (we let him sleep, he's in IT). That was when we were all in our 20s and still all living close-by.
    My group is playing sessions of around 7-9 hours for the Strahd campaign rn (with breaks). It's probably so we don't have to cut the story up too much, but we also have one player who cooks for us every time. So it's a lot like a nice get-together. With me trying not to brutally slaughter my players.

    I think The first story premise, with the futuristic and fantasy version concept, was kinda based on isekai stories and the "Media Transmigration" trope. or at least that is what i think
    Many isekai's are involve character traveling to a game like world. the most similar example i can think of is Sword Art Online, a quite.. lets say... Infamous anime, where the characters are actually playing a videogame, but the game is kinda done with this futuristic vr machine, that allows you to basically manipulates your brain to let you experience the game, also if you die in the game you die in real life.
    Think like the matrix, but if it was a mmorpg.
    it seemed they tried to emulate that, but didn't know how to make it work, and honestly it doesn't work that well for dnd. it's kinda like playing a character that in game plays dungeons and dragons, it's kinda weird and adds another layer between you and your character. Maybe you can do it, but like you said it's complicated, and difficult to do well.

    I'm not an expert in Ace Attorney, but I know enough to say that thing is mostly just a shipping thing due to how close both characters are and their dynamics/interactions, so yes, not cannon, I'm even kind of positive they were both straight so it might not make sense (Don't take my word on that though), but it's a popular ship nonetheless, and it doesn't harm anyone unless they take it a little too serious, but the fact that they preferred the pseudo incest one over the one of two grown adults with an interesting dynamic is..... not telling necessarily, due to Fran being one of the most popular female characters in the franchise, and also being one of the more suggestive characters (Her exaggerated poses, plus her whip, plus she looks really nice), but to be in favor of the pseudo incest one with characters that to my knowledge don't show much besides a sibling bond, and also bad mouthing the other one is just kind of weird is all (Specially cause it sounds like they hate it for being gay, while they're ok with the other for being straight even though it's incest, so....)

    I feel like the Avatar idea could work, but you have to integrate it better. I have ideas for a setting called Paradisio, who's thing is that its a VR MMO similar to the World from .Hack// (or I guess Sword Art Online, but I prefer .Hack//), which would work on similar rules of characters controlling Avatars in a game, but I'd want to integrate the two worlds much better than this.
    The tactical strike at the top of the highest point of the tower reminds me a bit of a moment from the Actual Play show Forge of Lore, only the big boss was actually at the top as he was the target. Steve, the DM, scrambled to get as many enemies up there as quickly as they could, until a certain viewer (okay, it was me) used a chat feature that could literally call in one of the Norse Gods to help the party, so Thor showed up and started fighting off the enemies on the lower floors, completely ruining Steve's plans... great guy, we all had a bit of a chuckle about it afterwards, and more enemies wound up coming in next session anyway.
    I swear I had something snarky to say, but I can't remember what it was.

      Now you got me thinking out how to play/write a story about an MMO. Like maybe have the "real" world be a simulation genre section where the human earns money to augment their in-game avatars or look up hints/strategies to the game online. Time management could also be a factor like balancing how much players "play" without penalties of during the "game".

    God, I hate the "I want to play a unique character" and the "I want to give you debuffs for playing that character."
    Granted, I as the DM will outline what I'm comfortable with, but it's never OK to just debuff or punish a player even if it "realistic." I have a thing for eyepatches and battle scarred veterans/pirates. Should they all be unable to participate in the adventure? One DM suggested I should have *disadvantage* on all attack rolls and skill checks because I'm missing an eye and I was like "Dude, I might have limited depth perception, but I'm not *blinded*. I'm not saying that it shouldn't be narratively apropriate, I didn't make a one-eyed character who's power is that he can see better than everyone else. Just let the fantastic fantasy be playable or at least give me something cool to make up for that which you mechanically punish on character creation.
    Fuggin', I even had one DM say that because I described my greatsword as "Worn, chipped and scratched from various battles with beasts of all sizes" that I should get a -1 to all attack rolls with it! I think that was the same guy I mentioned before. It's just thtat neither of those were mentioned until *after* we started session 1.
