- Labor MP Daniel Mulino says solutions need to be found for people less suited to digital-only as branches continue to close across Australia.
Mr Mulino’s comments come as Bankwest announced Wednesday that they would be closing all branches and transitioning to a digital only bank by October 2024.
“Here in metropolitan Melbourne, there is a lot of cold communities and a lot of elderly people who actually need to go into a branch, they don’t feel comfortable using digital banking.
“While the proportion of people in the digital community is really high and continues to rise, I think we do need to find solutions for that group of the community for whom that doesn’t work.
“I do think this is a policy issue that governments are going to have to grapple with over the next 10 to 20 years.”

Solution required? We already have a solution, it's called cash!
But some banks don’t want small businesses to bring coins into the bank to be counted even though they have machines to do the counting for them…and then deposit the money into their accounts because it hold up other customers….banks have an excuse for everything..even working with their customers is an effort.

The best solution might be for people to close their accounts at banks that close all their branches. Nothing talks like money walking out the door.

People need to keep cash alive, by using it more. I have started to withdraw cash and use it when shopping. This will help slow the push to a cashless society.
Businesses don't want your cash.
Counting and reconciling is a pain not to mention cost of security.
Once the world goes digital we could be surcharged on every transaction which is currently free with cash

The Reserve Bank have no problems printing and making new fiat money out of thin air... but of course going cashless will bring them in even more filthy lucre than that.

Anyone with a Bankwest account, *close it immediately and move banks.* We have to send a clear message that this is unacceptable. This is an attempt to move to a fully digital, cashless society, and regardless of how often you actually use cash, we need it in order for many people to survive, and to have greater autonomy with our money away from government and big business/big banking.
Baby boomers, disabilities and people who live in remote area are the most disadvantage in this decision.😰

Have been an it worker from the early2000. No way in the world my money gets connected to the internet
Australia Post Offices are privately owned franchises. Not at all like the days when you could access your bank account from the nationally owned Commonwealth Bank. I don't feel comfortable having to deal with yet another layer of outsourced (franchised) privately owed franchises. Try complaining to an Australia Post office if an Express delivery package isn't delivered or goes AWOL. They'll tell you that it's not their business .. even though they are trading on the once good name of Australia Post. They won't even help you, beyond handing out the parcel delivery complaints phone number. Not sure if that department is also outsourced .. thing is the responsibility trail is becoming thinner and thinner every year. Customer service is almost non existent and heavily Indian accented people who are extremely difficult to understand are expected to help you with your problem .. and that's just concerning a missing parcel delivery let alone the trials you'd be facing if you have trouble with your new digital bank account. Good luck with that!
