Thank god that triple j unearthed is still around, still the traditional way most of these young and upcoming bands can get some airtime.

In my opinion, Triple J began its cultural decline when it stopped being an Alternative music station and decided to lean heavily on its reputation as a "Youth" station. For much of its run over the decades Triple J served as an outlet for the type of music that was often being ignored by the mainstream radio stations. Sometimes a Triple J song (or artist) would end up being played on commercial radio, but usually a few months later after it had proven to be a hit with the alternative crowd. In this way, Triple J was a trendsetter, and while it appealed mostly to a young audience, it still catered to people of all ages who wanted something different from the mainstream. Once they pivoted to chasing the youth market and telling a large portion of their existing audience that they were "too old" and had "aged out" of the target demographic, they lost much of their cultural relevance. They pretty much ended up chasing trends rather than setting them, and these days don't sound much different from Nova or any other commercial station. About the only thing the station has going for it is its promotion of Aussie music, and even then there are a whole lot of great Aussie artists and musicians being ignored because JJJ management decided they don't appeal to the station's "core demographic" (e.g. they are over 30 years old and therefore don't appeal to the youth, or they play a type of music that is different from the usual middle-of-the-road indie rock/pop).

    JJJ Docos would be great,
I love the podcasts idea too, The Big Day Out Double J podcast they did was pretty good.

    Great video Liam.
I completely agree with you about trying to move to a broader media brand. I think they could be putting most of their content in video form on RUclips to grow and slowly transition to that.

From my perspective their biggest issue is devisive music that they have started to embrace a lot more in the last 8 or so years. I feel like it used to be 60-70% Aussie artists playing to the tastes of the majority of Aussies. Nowadays whenever I flick on the radio for a change of pace its more often than not an American hip hop artist, a genre I mostly cannot stand. These days I flick over for the news hour, if the next song is trashy hip hop or just a bad song in general then I immediately go back to my podcast or Spotify.
The way I find new songs and bands is I listen Hottest 100 every year and make a little list of the bands I liked and do I deeper dive on their catalogue afterwards. May favourites were all coming in around 60-90th place with only a few straying into the top 20.
In my opinion, because viral TikTok songs are likely going to win every year from now on, I think this may be the beginning of the end of this station for around 50% of their listenership.

Great video. Disagree on the increasing LAV though, lacks creativity but cool. Maybe find better music and learn how to target and understand your audience. Just do better essentially lol
