It's because she's not a soubrette. Her voice is WAY bigger than this role, and I believe that can be said for most of the roles Mozart wrote for women. They required agility in the voice that some bigger instruments can't accommodate. Netrebko needs lyric lines that hit their highest point in the middle of the phrase. I still think she sounds beautiful, but she's built for Romantic era operas.

wow it is amazing to see the opinions about Anna...she in my opinion is one of the best sopranos out there right now, but you either love or hate her. I love her, but I don't agree with every role she does. But don't forget that opera companies are asking her to do these things...at least she is not trying to sing Tosca and Turandot...that would be ridiculous!
By the way I am a 30 yo soprano who has similar size and color of voice as Anna... so I definitely understand some of her rep not being always right for her. She is a lyric to full lyric (not spinto) and even at my stage of the game I get differing opinions on what I should sing. some say the lighter stuff (like Susanna and Zerlina) and then some ask when I sing that stuff why the hell I'm singing it. And in this economy how can one turn down something though while not right won't hurt a voice.

By that standard, unless you, Erik, are a professional opera singer, you can't have an opinion about this music. Unless you can do something as good as this, why should your opinion be more valid than the critics' opinions? Praise is as much an opinion as criticism.

But if you listen to anything else, it is mostly fantastic, so for me Anna is an excellent singer and I will admire her until I will sing as well as she.

She makes a few mistakes put tries to correct them right away making them worse. Her timing is off also when singing duets. But I love her anyway and can hear her all day long, (also forget the coloratura).

She isn't really cut out for comic roles. The role I'd love to hear her in is the Queen of the Night. Here, in "Batti, Batti," Zerlina has to be just excruciatingly sweet--and that isn't Anna Netrebko. Fire, passion--that's Anna Netrebko.
Unfortunately she thinks differently. In fact she keeps "singing" coloratura roles with the results we all know. Of course we are just envious loosers though LOL God I'm always wondering how much money her label pays magazines newspapers and award academies.
Stylistically her dark big voice doesn't suit this soubrette role, the tone is very dramatic, heroic and serious whereas it should be fun, light, playful with shimmering quality in sound, still it is not awful. Personally I'm not a big fan of thin and light soubrette voices, such experiments when bigger voices sing such roles sometimes turn to be successful, for example Anna's Susanna was great, although her voice sounded very velvety and dark in Deh Vieni, still I found it a great rendition. Her current dramatic repertoire efforts are horrible, but surely not this.

She's built for Donna Anna or Donna Elvira. Zerlina is a role that calls for a light voice.
