Saved by LORO PARQUE: Lear's macaw (Anodorhynchus leari)

Lear's macaw (Anodorhynchus leari) is also one of the species that was saved thanks to the work of the Loro Parque Foundation. The species could be downgraded in its threat status because a turnaround in the stock numbers was achieved. The Brazilian parrot is one of nine species that have been saved thanks to the work by the expert of Loro Parque on Tenerife.
Local partners of the project are Instituto Chico Mendes para la Conservación de la Biodiversidad (ICMBio) and Centro Nacional de Investigación y Conservación de Aves Silvestres (CEMAVE). Also involved are the Universidad de Sao Paulo, Arara Azul Institute and Fundaçao Biodiversitas.
Loro Parque has invested nearly half a million dollars in the project since 2006, and was instrumental in making sure that this species, of which there were only 22 in 1999, survived and did not have to become extinct.
We talked about the project to protect these magnificent macaws in Brazil with the foundation's Scientific Director, Rafael Zamora Padrón, and Curator of Birds, Márcia Weinzettl, who have many years of experience in protecting and caring for these beautiful Lear's Macaws.
This project shows once more how important modern zoos and aquariums, such as the Loro Parque in Tenerife, are. Already many species could only be saved from extinction thanks to modern zoological facilities. This is an important and irreplaceable contribution to the urgent need for species and nature conservation. Loro Parque Fundación, founded in 1994, has dedicated itself to conservation and has invested over $ 18 million in this important work.
