      Imagine if Sony got serious about colour science, user experience and weather sealing. Good to see brands can still distinguish themselves uniquely.

    I don't have time to watch every video in B&H, sadly.
    However.
    If it's Hugh, I will find a way to make time. Your content is in my opinion simply the best there is on photography gear, in no small part to how expertly executed the presentation is. Webby well deserved. If you did a video on a pinhole camera made of cardboard, I'd still watch it.

    Informative video, thanks. I have ordered the SL3 and I wonder if the AF is good enough so that I can drop my EOS R5? I am not an action sports shooter, but I need to be able to shoot events. My SL2 was just falling a little short, hence I had to work with 2 camera systems, which I hope I can avoid with my SL3.

      I’m pondering the same, I have an R3 and it’s an amazing machine, but I barely use it, I like having it in my bag incase a job comes up that needs some speedy reactions, but if couldn switch it for an SL3 I could use my beaut selection of M lenses as well as an all rounder 24-70 😍

      So far I’d say the AF is indeed improved over SL2 but it’s more similar to my LUMIX S5ii than to the Canon R5. That is to say when it has enough light it is fast and confident but in lower light it struggles on low contrast subjects. For example something like a window treatment in a darker room. Most people would say that’s asking too much from any camera but the R5 was truly amazing for any static subjects into basically total darkness. The Sl3 is not like that.

    • @goldfinch2283
      @goldfinch2283 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@jiggyb21 Sounds promising. I don’t need 15 frames when tracking an object/person, but it would be great- and sufficient for me - to be able to reliably track an object at 4fs/s for a duration of 3-4 seconds.

      How was this informative vs looking at a spec sheet? Because a salesman at heart told you so. I mean even what he says about the SL2 being his longest owning camera (screams GAS problem) and after the Q3 came out it kind of fell short and his photography skills suddenly evolved past the capabilities of the SL2.... he is full of walking contradictions.
      All this guy does is try and sell stuff including himself. He does it well, articulates well and I think he and his wife are certainly good photographers, but don't take his word for anything more than that of a salesman.
      From all I hear if you need R5 AF to the max for sports etc you will need to keep it.
      This seems to be better than SL2 by quite a bit, but still lacking far behind Sony/Canon for dynamic moving subjects. Seems lateral movement tracks quite well but forwards and back it has serious issues.
      None of us need this camera, the SL2 will do more than 95% of us can or ever need from a camera, but if you like the upgrades, have the money and then by all means go for the upgrade. I am certainly in the latter group and certainly contemplating the upgrade. I have no issues saying this and admitting that it will make me feel good for a bit and my photography will still be okish at best until I actually work on my photography. Just wish this guy would say it as it is.

    Thanks, but with all due respect, it's Because I'm a photographer that I prefer a fully-articulating "flippy" screen to a simple tilt one, as I often use cameras in unusual positions. Only a flippy screen allows one to see the monitor in certain situations, such as laying the camera on the ground while shooting in portrait mode, especially as that generally involves some vertical tilt (where it's awkward to impossible use the viewfinder). Lack of such essential functionality is a quasi-dealbreaker for me (at least for a primary camera). I'm also curious as to how the production SL3 will compare to the Lumix S1 and S5 II--just how much is that red dot really worth in this case?

      When I see this camera, I think of a vid seen with an Asian shooting with a camera (I think a Sony) tethered to a tablet (ipad) but what caught my eye was, it was in a mount that was strapped to the inside of his forearm which along with the palm of his hand was facing up of course. He was shooting a female model out in front of some building in public & never took his eye off the tablet while shooting.

    • @ddsdss256
      @ddsdss256 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@thomastuorto9929 If you're referring to the possibility of using a "remote monitor" to use in those admittedly rare circumstances where a tilt (v. flippy) screen just doesn't work, then I suppose that would be possible. I don't have an iPad but could presumably use the Leica app (assuming it's Android-friendly) to compose (and even shoot). I'd rather not go to that bother, but that would be an alternative. It's just easier with a flippy screen (although I prefer an EVF whenever possible). Thanks for the idea. My question remains if a red dot on the body is worth it. I do use Leica lenses on my Lumix cameras, but 3x the price for a body that's not as comfortable to use is worth contemplation.

      @@ddsdss256 Different strokes. I liked what I saw in the vid & if i shot moving portraits / fashion type photos or even for low handheld nature & close-up & macro that I do, I would like one. If you seen the vid, you might not think of it as a bother or any type of hindrance. If only walking around & taking a few photos here there over the coarse of a day or afternoon of whatever catches your eye, might not be worth it for you. Happy shooting.

      @@thomastuorto9929 Thanks, you to. I get the "Leica thing" (which, one could argue, includes using the rangefinder models), but I don't shoot fashion/portraits either (my "subjects" are rarely people) and there's little else I don't photograph (anything can be an interesting subject). Therefore, I need a more versatile system than any "FF" (or MF) rig can provide. I can see using an SL3 for some of my work (primarily "abstract" with an emphasis on close-up/macro--mainly "nature" as well) and it would be fun to use in some situations (plus another couple of stops of DR can come in handy at times), but it wouldn't work as a daily driver. MFT is the only practical alternative for me, as I routinely carry lenses ranging from 12-800mm EFL, so I'm ready for practically anything. I routinely produce over 1,000 images per month and it's daunting enough curating/editing/printing 20MP RAWs--60MP would slow things down even more and there's rarely a need for that kind of res (plus the G9 can do up to 80MP and the G9 II 100MP). I know I could "dumb it down" to 30 or even 18MP, but that would be like driving a Ferrari to the neighborhood grocery store. As you say, different strokes and I'm not ruling out the SL3.

      @@ddsdss256 You mean driving a Ferrari to the grocery store store in first gear? Rite?😉 Yup, one advantage of your 4/3 system is the extended mm range you get besides the weight & size thing. Nobody needs a Leica SL3 - except you really want the best available glass. But the expensive body will be outdated in about two years, when cameras with global shutter will have become the standard. I love my Canon R 6 MkII - which beats the SL3 in many aspects, and of course especially in the price-performance ratio.

      @jockslifeatliftvideoproduc8528 9 месяцев назад +1

      Its not that they couldnt, its that they didnt want to. I'm no Leica fan boy or even user, the only Leica I own is my grandfathers M2 from 1958, however, articulated displays are a liability for weather sealing and Leica has some of the best weather sealing in the world. Theres a reason most extreme high-end photography cameras only have a pull out screen rather than fully articulating... theyre a weakness and not regularly used by professional photographers. Different cameras for different markets, if you need fully articulated display then Leica isnt for you.
