There's definitely something to be said for just having everything mechanically coupled and most of all SIMPLE. Modern versions of this system like the F5 are better in almost every respect except for three things. 1) They can't be as robust as purely mechanical systems because electronics tend to have a shelf-life. 2) They're never going to be as tactile and satisfying because the buttons and controls are all electronic rather than being mechanically coupled. 3) If the battery fails, they still function just fine. Bonus) They don't have as much style as the old systems. I'd still pick the F5 (or just stick with my Sony A7iii), but I'm playing around with an F2 I just inherited, and it's VERY satisfying.
I'm so glad I bought mine before they become lost to history. Got mine along with a 55mm F1.2 lens. Had it professionally CLA'd and is now ready to go. Last of the hand built Nikons. Expensive, but the best money I ever spent.
So now I know what that notch sticking out the side of my F2AS head is all about. It’s for that far out auto aperture motor. How in the hell does it override the clicking f stops in the aperture ring of the ai Lens????
I'm not sure to be honest. I don't know if the clicks stop sounding, or just the motor sound overlaps the sound of the lens aperture. Have a good day sir!
i got a NIKON F2 Black body and the 2 Parts Motor drives and DS-12 pack and i need to get a exposure meter head for it and also get the camera REPAID and i only paid £10.00 for all of them from a second hand camera shop in London in 2023 and the video recording looks good AND WHEN I GET MY CAMERA FIXED I AM SURE IT WILL WORTH SOME MONEY FROM WHAT I PAID £10.00 to as much £500.00 or so
This looks borderline sci-fi... I remember I've tried to find decent F2AS copy, but ended up buying F4s (sadly). What's DS-12 release date by the way? Couldn't find any info online...
They had amazing engineering, then, all lost and forgotten, incapable of repairing and producing - Nikon‘s gone forever… the digital mirrorless commodity. If I ever go back to buy a real non-Leica camera, it‘ll be a Pentax. They‘ve not forgotten Photography and replaced it with digital imagery.
The Nikon F2 system was an amazing piece of engineering. Thanks for posting this.
Masterpiece!
Great demo, wonderful to see how well engineered the system was all those years ago...amazing!

That’s some truly wild technology when you think the entire process is 100% analog 😮
Absolutely. A masterpiece.

Certainly an excellent machine.
I had both of my F2as black bodies basically rebuilt by Sover Wong. best money I've ever spent.
Is Mr. Wong paying you for advertising here? 😀
Thanks for the video, could not figure out how to install everything on my new F2.
Lo mejor……..las pilas del Mercadona jeje. Buen vídeo.
Me alegra saber que presta atención a los detalles del vídeo. Muchas gracias! 😉
@@nikon-filmvintagecameras2630 y a mi encontrarme con un aficionado español de Nikon como usted. Un saludo muy grande.

Hi, sorry for the delay. The DS-12 only fits in the F2AS so I guess it is from 1977, as that was the year the Nikon F2AS was released.
Wow…
😍😍😍
