  • Years before I ventured onto the RUclips platform, I was watching a Munich-based artist known as "Iraville" paint the most wonderful, immersive scenes with her watercolors and soft-spoken narratives.
In those years, I've had the pleasure of engaging with Iraville (Ira Sluyterman van Langeweyde) on occasion and have been captivated by her unique style and densely filled worlds of color, value, and composition.
If there is an artist on social media whom I aspire to be more like, it's her. The dedication to her skills and work is nothing short of humbling.
And in this book, "Hideaways: More Art from Iraville," I was able to bring home a one-on-one conversation where reading her perspectives is like sitting over a cup of tea and learning the secrets of a true pro.
You can find her work on Instagram at ‪@iraville‬ or on RUclips, as well.
Come take a sneak peak at her new book as I discuss some of the reasons why, for me, this will be a fantastic reference tool I'll come back to time and time again!
Cheers and thank you for visiting.

Great book review Mark! I didn’t even know Iraville came out with her second book. Like you I find the complexity and harmony in her work fascinating and stunning. 🧡

Thank you so much, @AlyonasWatercolourCreations! I appreciate the kind words! And yes, I think "fascinating" and "stunning" are both great ways to describe her work. I hope all is well on your end! ~ Mark

I've loved Iraville for *years*. She's the reason I had the confidence to do literally anything not related to scrapbooking. "actual art" I sometimes say.

Long time no see! Her designs remind me a bit of scrapbook paper and character stamps... echo park mixed with a bit of lawn fawn 😂 its like a modern primative look. Would love to see how you use the info she provides in your own work... i find translating what i read into what I do difficult

Thank you so much, @battygirlrachel! I really like your assessment of Echo Park & Lawn Fawn! And yes, "modern primitive" is an excellent description (wish I'd thought of that! Lol!) I look forward to exploring the words in the book as much as the imagery. But, in the end, I'm like you and find it a challenge to take what I read or see on RUclips or TikTok and bring it into my own work. Of course, I love trying! hehe!! Be well and again, thank you! ~ Mark

Wow. I had no idea this artist existed. What incredible art. You are right, her layering technique is amazing. I will definitely have to check her out. I don't see a whole lot of book reviews from you so I knew this had to be a good one. :)

I'm so happy to introduce you to Iraville. She's been very kind in our past engagements and I was thrilled to learn of her new book coming out. As for reviews, I usually only reference books when they really impact what I do or that may impact the art community, as a whole. Thank you for checking this video out and I hope you enjoy her work as much as I do! Cheers! ~ Mark

Mark it is very nice to see you with this nice video. I was waiting for your inktober 2023 video but it did not come. Again it is very nice to see you back and inspiring

Thank you so much, my friend. Yes, after seven years of doing Inktober, I decided that I no longer wanted to participate and chose to apply my time to personal projects, instead. It was a very wise decision for me and I felt relieved not to be under pressure to produce work at such an intense pace. It was wonderful to produce work for myself and at my own speed. I really appreciate your kind words and most of all, your support! I hope you are doing well! ~ Mark

Yes, @MadebyDawn23! "simple complexity" is what I see when I look at her work. So much thought goes into it, yet the execution looks so carefree and liberating. Hoping all is well in your world! ~ Mark

So good to see you, my friend. I wish I could look at my art book collection through your eyes. What I enjoyed most is that you show us what you like, but you are so good at explaining what it is about the ibook and mages that pull you in.

    • @MDCampbell

Thank you C0raBr0wn!!! It's just as good to hear from you, as well! I hope all is going well and you're enjoying the new year, so far! I appreciate your kind words and how I presented the book. I had a ton of art books throughout the years, but got rid of most of them (sold or donated), because I just wasn't revering them the way I used to. I hope that the people who have those books now are enjoying them the way I did when I first got them. These days, when I buy an art book, I really have to connect with the art _and_ the artist, enough to be influenced or moved. That's how I know the book is a keeper! Anyhow, I'm blathering! lol! Stay well, my friend and again, thank you! ~ Mark

I have to limit my book collection to what fits on my bookshelves, but I have a lot of them. Remember Scandinavian Design? The next time I need to make space,, I'm going to try asking myself, "if I didn't already have this book, would I buy it again?"@@MDCampbell

@@C0raBr0wn I always loved Scandinavian furniture design - so whimsical and colorful! As for books, like I said, I purged a while back and was so glad that I did. I still have a few storage boxes of books, but I rarely ever look to them, nowadays. Those are the one's I just cannot part with. :)
