  • When the same flaws continue to show up in our work, then they may be holding us back from fully enjoying our creative experience and from growing toward a higher level of work we could do.
In this discussion, we talk about how flaws can affect our positive approach to our work and have a negative impact on both the current project and future projects.

I never really drew much as a kid, I'm 20 years old now and just now started to get into drawing (digitally). Is there any chance I can get good? Or would I generally just need that 10 years+ of experience?
(I don't wanna be amazing, I just wanna be able to make like.. cartoons confidently and accurately.)

Hi Mr. Succ. I think we can only become as good at something based on the level of interest and commitment we are willing to put into it. Whether that's cooking, playing guitar, drawing, or even athletics. My daughter just picked up the guitar in December and is now writing full songs and playing chords. She is passionate and spends 2-3 hours every day playing. She's 21 and never played before. I've seen adults who never drew beyond doodles at work become full-fledged artists because they had an interest that grew into a passion. The more we invest, the better we'll get. Will you ever get "good?" There's no guarantee. But, if your interest is there, then feed it and you'll find out. Cheers! Mark

Thank you for that kind word, @sharpmountaingames! One of my flaws is being a perfectionist and being too self-critical. While I enjoy the work I do, I often look at some pieces and think, "I could've done it so much better." The one for this video is that kind of painting. I just think I was too "gung ho!" and didn't listen to that voice inside telling me to step away and look at it later. Ahh, even at this age I'm still too stubborn to listen to myself! lol!!! Thank you again and cheers! ~ Mark

hey Mark, I was on the fence about an art challenge I undertook but I hit snagged and i was contemplating abandoning the challenge when your video came along. The snagged that I hit was I on my last challenge I dont think the art piece came out great and it made me sad and because of that "bad drawing" i am considering not completing the challenge. Your words are so inspiring. I know that I was attempting a story that maybe I was beyond my current skill level but i convinced myself that i can do it and when it does not comes out great it depressed me. I have about 5 more drawings to go, i think i should atleast finished the challenge, I never worked on tones paper before, I am in the mood of embracing my illustrative cartoony style, and accepting it. It is my style and should not be ashame it, Some days I am, because a lot people around me paint amazing work with acrylic and in a realistic style, then here I come cartoony illustrative and in WATERCOLOUR, you would not expect a woman to have this style but i do. It is a kind of style that should be simple enough that I should not draw with mistakes but sometimes it happens. Then i am hard on myself because it I should not make mistakes. for year I call myself a fraud because of my art style it is cartoony, it is in watercolour, then late last year I acknowledge that I am artist, it is like for me to accept my style is in baby steps. I am rambling. the core of the issues is that I am in the process of accepting my art style after listening you to on this video I think that I can finish those last five drawings. Thanks Mark.

Made by Dawn, I appreciate and respect your honesty and reflection, and thank you for sharing your experience with me. I know your style and have enjoyed watching you explore it for some time. I often find myself in the exact same scenario where I am surrounded by brilliant, traditional watercolor artists, yet here I am - with my cartoony style using watercolor in a coloring book fashion. You know what? That's who I am and I celebrate the successes of my style and the work I do. My weakness is actually feeling like I have to do what those other artist's do, as though I have to measure up. But again, you know what? I don't. I need to nurture my weakness and in that, I need to simply remind myself that I am not those other artists. This is my journey. My work is mine and is not in any way comparable to anyone else's. In celebrating and nurturing, at the same time, I am caring for my creative spirit and allowing it to be free of restrictions and judgement. If a challenge isn't working for me - I don't do it. I will never disappoint myself by caring for my creative spirit. I know what's good for it and I trust myself to treat it with respect, love, and compassion. Always. I hope these words make sense, because maybe, they might apply to you as well. Keep going with who you are... because you are amazing. ~ Mark

I love your fun, colourful characters! I think flaws add to the charm of an artwork, and make it feel more authentic and personal to the artist, like a signature. Making mistakes is also a great way to learn and improve one's art on a long term basis. At least, I tell myself this, otherwise I'd have given up a long time ago, lol. And if all else fails, cover it all with washi tape! 😂

    • @MDCampbell

That is such a fantastic, wonderful reminder, Becky! I wish I had mentioned that in the video - to see flaws as a charm and an appeal. That's why I love the old Ray Harryhausen stop motion films, especially compared to the modern CGI films of today. His work was obvious and clear that it was stop motion. He made no apology and we accepted it fully for exactly what it was. It was spectacular. I think of the original "Clash of the Titans." Brilliant. But, that charm is lost in the Marvel universe, where the CGI is so perfectly rendered and polished, that it often falls flat because it's, perhaps, too much. Sometimes, I'd like to take some of those Transformer-type movies and cover them all with washi tape! lol!!! Thank you for taking a moment to check this out and for your thoughts. Always a treat! ~ Mark

Mark, this video is super important. I have take to quotes:
The first is: I still make mistakes
The second is: acknowledging and nurturing our weaknesses just as important as celebrating our strength.

Thanks Mark so much for this video.

I'm glad this resonated with you and I'm so fortunate for your feedback. Thank you! ~ Mark

this was sooo interesting to watch, and even more so , to listen to !!! sooo many thoughts on this .. one thing that happens to me is getting lost in the moment ( which is definitely a wonderful thing !!!), but losing track of what I'm doing .. I have gotten into the habit, for my pieces that take a longer time ( commissions, especially) , to make myself stop , take pic of the painting, and walk away .. I have a few wonderful artist/ friends, and I ask them their opinions.. They tell me the truth , make suggestions , etc( they won't say some bs to stroke my ego lol) .. that helps me a lot, and I've definitely gotten better at accepting their advice.. I think we artists just stop " seeing" at a certain point , because of being immersed in it , ego, and losing the perspective of distance ( physical and emotional and visual) .. I also agree that ego is at the core of everything with this process, not to mention it being at the core of most of the problems in society .. we are the only species that make decisions , good bad and ugly, based on our egos 😳😳 By the way, I love that mottling effect a lot, for you, Mark!!! It adds sooo much depth and texture ( which I always love) .. Hope you enjoyed that effect too !! love your videos and thoughts so much!! Norakag 😁😁

As always, you say things that I wish I had added to the video. Taking a step back and _talking to other people whom we trust to give us straight truth_ is so important. While I agree that it is a huge challenge to accept the advice shared with us, I think it may be harder to get others to actually BE brutally honest with us, running the risk of damaging our ego. And yes, I agree completely about not being able to "see" at a certain point. Every, single time I step away from a piece and come back to it days later, it's far more appealing to work on than when I've spent hours straight working on it. Thank you for the kind words about the mottling effect. It's something I've been merging into lately especially with certain paints. I will continue to explore it for a while. Thank you so much and please know how much your time and thoughts mean to me! So grateful!! ~ Mark

Thank you, Shadow Guard, for taking your time to comment. Because I overworked the purple character, the value became too heavy and the same weight as the two characters around it, making the piece too heavy - visually - on the left side. It's not really a huge issue, but it's something I was fully aware of. I just try to celebrate the idea that I was able to sit down and find time to paint. That, in itself, is a miracle in these busy times! lol! Cheers!

I’m currently into watercolors. I’m heavy handed, I overwork my paintings, and I’m not bothered. When I paint I’m trying to create something I’m happy with. I’m not trying to create light ethereal layers. A more seasoned artist might think my paintings are overworked, but it’s OK.

That blue added to purple guy imho makes him look dirty or sick especially with the vivid brown right next to him.
And it’s eating away the Linework a bit too much. Would have tried a little pink or light red instead…
Mr. Stripes to me looks a bit too smooth compared to the others. But that’s just my two cents.

Soldier Twoface, isn't that the ultimate downfall with watercolor? Watching our work slowly turn to mud or sick looking when we overwork it or make wrong-turn decisions? I want to say it's an amateur mistake, but it's a flaw caused by overthinking, rushing, and a desire to push where pushing isn't necessary... and I still do it, even after all these years. Thank you for making me laugh with the "crayon up the nose" comment! lol! Thanks for your feedback and taking the time to watch! Cheers! ~ Mark
