In the late 70's my little brother was given a YZ-80, a small bike but packed w/ some serious power for so small a package. And when ya jumped on it you'd hear the motor whine out but that was the thing about this bike ; the power band inside delivered a screaming climb of power & sounds but right when you thought it was all used up >> > you found she kicked up another notch that just rocked/rolled. I can't properly describe it like when you got to the top of an octave in music, you found another one right on top of the octave you just left...... the powerband was like two octaves & b/c of her small stature she was great at ripping thru the woods/trees. She could beat larger bikes in those conditions & my cousin had a 250 at the time and he could never beat the little bike. Thanks for this video , reminds me of the old days & you've given me a list of bikes to research in the event I come across one of them sitting in a garage or field. When ya miss the good ole' days does that mean you are old? Lol, I still wouldn't trade them back - just be a little more wise. thanks man, chat soon
The, "sounds" of that machine was one that when it sounded like it was over/done with, she was just getting started! I do appreciate the video, you're getting good at locating this stuff. You be safe out there. peace
So when I first arrived here I was looking at dual-sports which I'm still doing but because of your passion & another channel I've started "digging" history..... nothing I ever learned at school so now you've broadened my focus and I like that. You have a great one as well & you keep on surprising me as I learn I'm interested in what you've got. peace man & I'll be chatting you up later, the Lord willing.
Great video. I was never courageous enough or skilled enough to ride a two stroke 500 and don’t mind admitting it. Looking forward to the thumper video. 👍🇦🇺
In the 80's a friend had a Yamaha YZ 465, we had to push it a mile to the neatest field where we could ride it, some times I was happy if it didn't start as it was scary fast and wheelied in any gear.
had cr500 in the 90's until hyper extending my knee 45 degrees, down to 250cc, nice Not to have the bike catapulted forward between your legs once the tire found rock while uphill ! bought an xr650 frame in Ensenada, Baja California for $20 and rode the Tecate 500 next year...smooth as hell in the desert, was able to complete !

I have a 1991 KX500 that I converted into a snowbike and have been running the last 6 years. Ported, cut head, etc. It makes insane amounts of torque and has no problem spinning up a long track in deep snow. Love the power and the sound, will never sell this bike and it will only rest when parts are no longer attainable.
now im going out on a limb here, because ill be honest and say i cant remember if it was the US or European results, but one year in particular, ALL the 250 races were actually faster than the 500's. you can only get so much power down to the ground in sand and mud 🙂
@@barebonesmc Decades ago I was invited along with my good friend and his family to a race, his 80cc class had the hottest lap times over the 125, 250 and open. The young kids were fast and fearless on those little bikes. Mind you, the self preservation & life-protecting genes had not kicked in yet.
@@rotaxtwin there is some footage from an MX meet in Spain here ruclips.net/video/YsTOSegxsHE/видео.html the kids were awesome, they start them young there 🙂
At 53 I still have a love of the two stoke, however the modern four stroke has just as much power and same weight with an easier (controllable) power curve. Many videos out there comparing the latest made 500 2 strokes against factory produced 450's. The only thing the two strokes have on the modern race bikes is the simplicity of maintenance.
yet in the races they are allowed, they can still win (the modern 2 strokes) no one would argue the running gear is better, but a fast rider on a 2 stroke is always hard to beat on a level playing field
The intro reminds me why I could never go back in time. Watching blurry standard definition video would be torture and people would wonder what my problem is. I guess early days investing in Apple and Nvidia, etc would compensate though 😆
Thank you for another brilliant video. No one makes a vid like you mate. Keep well brother and ride free! Please could you do a video on one of my favourite bikes the Honda CB400 Superfour? A friend of mine had an 81 Kawasaki 420, it was an unruly beast for country roads. Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t that the 500’s predecessor? I transferred the sale to my friend from a guy who used to ride with the Husqvarna dealer. First time I had ever heard of the name as a dirt bike. Has to still be some of those around in Southern Sask.
Another great look back at some proper old school bikes. If I could just say one thing though, at the transitions between video clips why does the video stop suddenly? Although not annoying I do find it slightly irritating.
The reputation of the Suzuki TM 400? I only remember the terrible reputation it had and how disappointed riders were that it only looked similar to the factory bikes. It was heavy, had lousy suspension, handled terrible, and had a crazy powerband. But I never rode one and only knew one kid who had one. Four strokes of mention you said and I thought immediately of the Husky, the Husaberg, and the Vermatti. But the Honda XR 500R I had was heavy but good handling, and the Yamaha was the real game changer when it came out.
the bit at the end was a quick intro to what will be the thumpers video after i am bback, as to the terrible reputation of the TM400. that was part of its charm, as with many. more people remember the TM than will ever remember the RM, that is for sure. does that make the TM better, no, it wasnt, but it broke new ground for the rest to follow
