Yup, more like this please. There are tons of channels of guys flying down flowy trails, but your running (riding) commentary explaining the moves you hit (or missed) in this video is extremely useful for anyone struggling to move their skills to the next level.
If you know this section, you know how hard it is to pull this off. This is the best video I've seen that shows how much work it takes for a skilled rider to clean it. Definitely watch the other video of him nailing the descent on this same hardtail; it will inspire you to try it, and it's doable (especially with suspension). But this climb is nearly impossible without MAD skills and showing the sessions figuring out the line and the moves is gold. This guy rules! Can't wait to see the full round-trip video!
Awesome work, Jeff. I really did enjoy this format - breaking down what you need to do to clean the climb. And hey, it shows that you’re human after all! 😃
Thanks for sharing. I think I might have learned more from your commentary struggling with it then I would have learned if you cleaned it. Props for determination!
Heroic effort, one of my favorite vids. Trail clips/tips are great but watching you session is inspirational. I had stopped asking for more trials videos as I didn't want to be a pest, but MORE TRIALS!!!
I love stuff like this that shows the reality, not the polished version, of mountain biking. Seeing the amount of skill, effort, & most of all perseverance needed to accomplish a climb like this is more inspirational than any shredit edit hands down!
Now this...this is something. Struggling towards a genuinely impressive goal is the stuff good stories are made of. Really excited for your follow-up video.
Such a great and honest breakdown of an incredibly technical undertaking. Makes me appreciate, even more, how difficult this kind of riding is. Love this type of video! Keep 'em coming.
More please. Can't believe you do that stuff clipped in. That's a climb to do just before sunrise, no sun, a little moisture on the ground, would make a huge difference.
@@kelp0223 Of course it is possible. Brumotti does that same type of stuff on a road bike with flats. Clips is a preference. Point was the penalty for failure is much greater with clips.
Nice work Jeff. I felt how exhausting that was while watching the shredit. I remember, getting on close to 20 years ago, hopping my way through an exhausting section at some comp in PA and then watching JJ clean the whole thing in what seemed like three huge moves. I don't envy the interval work you'll have to do to get there, but I look forward to watching the vid where you clean this.
Super happy with this video. Maybe one of my favorites. It's great to see the actual effort it takes to take on such an ambitious climb that only a few could even attempt.
I think it's an excellent video, nice to see that even very talented riders don't/can't always make stuff first time like in edits. Always tell people I like to be fit, because I love tech climbing and the biggest thing to that is fitness, as all the little moves just wear you out. Looking forward to seeing the un-edited, 1 time, no dabs clear video of this section.
I don’t know that I’d enjoy riding as much without your tech climb walkthrough videos like this one. I came to the sport with tons of bike control but no fitness so realizing I could outclimb the fitness guys when stuff got rough was very cool.
This just showed up in my feed ... AMAZING Jeff!! I wish I could ride this down never even thinking of up ... very cool video as well, thanks for sharing!
Absolutely excellent! Seeing a skilled rider do something that doesn t quite look possible is always impressive and maybe even educational, but getting a totally honest look at what it takes and how the fail happens is many times more useful. On some of the sections I try to ride that are technical for me, the gear you start in is not rhe gear you need to be in later. It can be perplexing. Seeing you struggle and learn with this right gear problem and be totally honest about it is highly informative. More like this, please!
I have been there and wondered if anyone could actually ride down it as you did and then ride up like you tried. Your anaerobic load must have been incredible. I am so impressed with your ability and effort. I really enjoyed the break down. Wonderful video!
Jeff, I have so much to say to you after watching this video! 1. It was an awesome video and I enjoyed watching every bit of it. Great work! 2. I would love to see more videos like that. Perhaps many people are not as interested in all the details as I am, but as an engineer and 25 years mtb'er, I'm a very detailed-oriented person. 3. I think the way the video was produced was perfect because you did the initial part in the Shredit mode which would satisfy most people for the simple entertainment value, but those of us that understand trials and tribulations, understand that there's a lot more to meets the eye when getting a truthful look at the full effort & elapsed time of an event. I love watching your videos and your style because of your honesty and humbleness. 4. Sorry, I feel I'm too old to be inspired to get out and challenge myself in this manner with a conventional pedal bike :-) At 60, I'm now looking back at my younger years of mountain biking with great fascination trying to understand where the hell I got so much energy to do some very challenging things that no longer have appeal or reasonable expectation of performance. 5. As a Testament to my age and deteriorating performance, I got a Specialized Turbo Levo 2 months ago. I've been riding the hell out of it and enjoying every opportunity I have to get more technical in the sense of Trail profiles that I used to ride or at least have the heart rate to attack. This is not to say that I am no longer fit, but I'm just being honest and recognize the change with age. To put this in perspective, I totally understand what you're going through when you're trying to manage your energy on a sustained technical, trials, Trail challenge like Horsethief Bench. 6. Coincidentally, this past weekend a friend of mine invited me to hike a trail that I used to ride on my mountain bike years ago. When I was riding it 25 years ago, I didn't have the perspective of comparison that is available today by virtue of RUclips and social media. So in hindsight I look back on this Trail (Iron Mountain, Poway, CA near San Diego) as a very challenging feat, but didn't know it at the time. I wasn't aware of the sport of trials riding at the time, but now that I'm a RUclipsr, a follower of yours and so much more aware of the many trials riding stars out there, I see this Trail as a great opportunity for someone like yourself to ride. I would love to come see you do it along with some other trails in the immediate vicinity. The other trails(including Mount Woodson Trail from Lake Poway) are in the same small mountain range so they have similar rocks characteristics. Many people hike Iron Mountain and take the straight shot up to it, but there is a connecting trail, Ellie Lane with generous amounts of technical climbing involved. This Trail is not so heavily used nor heavily maintained as the Iron Mountain trail that it connects to. When I would ride it, I would make a clockwise Loop up Ellie Lane, then go up Iron Mountain as an out-and-back, and continue back down the most direct way to form a loop because I would be so spent on energy that I would not consider doing it as a pure out and back. Maybe you would like to do it as an out-and-back to make another video and challenge for yourself? 6. In 2017, as part of my nostalgic quest, I retraced most of the mtb route of my youth on my eMoto. What I call my eMoto is a 6000 watt electric motorcycle that his not too much different in size from a mountain bike. It actually uses DH mountain bike components including wheels tires, brakes handlebars and suspension (fork/shock). The following playlist documents my visit on my eMoto: Iron Mountain Rockumentary Trail Ride (4 sequential parts): ruclips.net/p/PLZEb8ngMuMU3uqmvbBwtfb0KSg2pbeyJH In 2018 I tackled Mount Woodson and documented this ride in the following playlist: my Mt. Woodson eMoto: ruclips.net/p/PLZEb8ngMuMU30KypRka-LicCU_uc8a8lC I put these playlist in here so you could preview the trails I'm referring to. Please let me know if you're ever interested in attempting these trails that are very close to my home.
thank you so much, that's awesome you got an ebike ands are still having fun. When I started the channel a big part about it was trying to inspire people. I feel like it might have in a round about way with you!
@@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss No doubt, yes I'm inspired by you and so often as I ride your name and the name Pat Smage comes to my mind, lips, and GoPro as I challenge myself on tech trail features.
Got to this video through my suggested videos, this is the first video I have seen from you, I have to say I really like this style of video, I like seeing people try hard things and fail a little but try again and to improve and break down their challenges. Hope to see you make it all the way up there, definitely feels within reach.
Great commitment to actually finish getting to the top even with dabs & rests especially in that heat, as mentioned already probably best just before or at sunrise & you have a better knowledge on how to attack/ride the route, it may take a couple of attempts similar to climbers on a rock climb working a route, I’m sure you can do it if anyone can 😅👍
Love it! Side note, that guy said, people want to see you fail? Not me! You give me bad ideas to try on the trails behind the house. I'm on my way out there now. Thanks for the inspiration.
