Whereas Christopher Lee's request had more to do with him being more comfortable with European swordsmanship (which he was already experienced with) rather than Chinese and Japanese which Lucas was going for.

    With a curved hilt a saber can take the best advantage of Makashi, as it can turn a thrust into a short slash without much effort, and that's what Makashi is about, economy of movement and energy.

      DouglassRobert I can see why to when you thrust you can use the pinky finger to give the blade a short little tug with can be used to as you say make a cut example: you thrust the blade at the upper body just below the neck since your body is stretched that far out you can use the hilt to your advantage by pulling the blade downward with the bottom part of the hand to strike through the center mass of target and then finish with a full pull downward to cut through your opponent.

    • @hailhydreigon2700
      @hailhydreigon2700 4 года назад +11

      @@jerlogston The word Fencing came from Defence.
      At one point, Fencing referred to any complete martial arts system that contained weapons, unarmed combat and wrestling.
      Eventually all of those split up into sports and got their own names (Boxing, types of Wrestling, etc.) while weapons combat was still known as Fencing.
      Eventually, Fencing became a sport and dropped the unarmed combat and moved to using simulated swords. This was the birth of Modern Olympic Fencing.
      Some martial arts like Escrima (which literally means Fencing) still equate the term to a complete martial art with weapons, wrestling, striking, etc.
      And there's currently a movement to resurrect dead Fencing styles called Historical European Martial Arts.
      So, it's safe to use the term Fencing for multiple things now. But it usually always related to weapons training.

      They aren't very compatible since you'd have to constantly switch form, grip, and footwork. The biggest problem is that going from attacking with makashi to defending with soresu would take more time than defending in a makashi style, leaving you open to attack. You'd be better off honing one to the pinnacle to reach the level of Obi Wan or Dooku than trying to use both. Ironically, Juyo and soresu are far more compatible despite being polar opposites (one having no offense and the other having no defense). Juyo uses false openings and misdirection which would be especially unexpected from a soresu user and therefore extremely effective. If you compare the juyo and soresu forms, you'll see that the dirty tricks and misdirection of juyo can be performed while still maintaining soresu form.

      @azearaazymoto461 Actually, you'd cery suprised how easy it is to blend forms and flow from one to another. As a Fencer and Practioner of HEMA and Kenjutsu I find they compliment each other very well.
      The issue you think of is when you get to caught up on the particulars and rules of a single style. When you remove certain thoughts like, keep one hand off the blade, don't rotate your feet, stay in kne lane of motion, it becomes clear how much they mirror each other.
      The most annoying thing I do in sparring matches is fight Fencers with Kendo/Iado and Kendo/Iado Practioners with Fencing. They are usually so accustomed to fighting against their own style with each other following the same rules that they have no idea how to react.
      HEMA Practioners though? Those guys are nuts 😆. Nothing is scary then a armored gauntlet backhanding your blade then flying at your stomach.

It brilliantly utilizes your weapon's reach to maintain a defensive distance, however it demands high environmental awareness as to one's position and footing to successfuly evade and counter. As Im practicing this move, I feel that while I have the advantage of precision, particularly with the confined box defensive moves and the precise attack directions, theres a bit of vulnerability to the user of this form. What I mean by this relates with the lore, in which Form 2 was designed in a way that allowed users to counter enemies that showed more errors or deficiencies in their attacks. Its power came from how, at the forms core, the user was both physiological and mentally in a balanced position, perfect for defeating Sith and Jedi who showed the slightest impatience or imbalance in their focus. However, the vulnerabilities of this form come when your fighting either an enemy who not only might have a more aggressive fighting form, but is able to concentrate all their aggression without making those feelings slip. So what I think happens is that Form 2 users are basically on a trip rope when in combat and they're performing a balancing act. So when they see an enemy, Form 2 users are either A) end that opponents career due to an error, or B) either stumble upon an equally skilled fighter using either the same or different form. If the later is true, the Form 2 user will realize that they are now being pushed off the trip rope, and the way the battle ends is if the Form 2 user faces the risk of dismemberment (not IRL), retreats from the scene, or perhaps somehow winning the fight either due to changes in the setting or opponent. This is why Anakin Skywalker defeated Dooku on the Invisible Hand, as that was a moment where Anakin's aggression after seeing an injured Obi Wan was focused enough to push Dooku off that rope. Of course their was the force aiding in that fight, but considering the spacing of the wizard tower interior and the uneven angles that Dooku would see himself fighting on, I bet Anakin could have won due to him being focused and angry.
    So overall, I would say that this move is good for sporting at best, just like its influence, Fencing. In actual combat, your basically an opportunist, as you can pick off clumsier opponents and have elegant/beautiful fighting moves at the same time. Against opponents with more self control, focus, and either similar or different attack forms, your looking at an eventual retreat or death sentence, or at least an attritional battle in general

Put less effort in this one. Basically 🤣
    My favorite is the defense part. If I duel my cousin and he would swing rotated I would use the 6th move if you ask me. But it will be lots of effort in it as it would be. Dooku probably another reason he lost to ani, it could be that anakin used Djem So (3rd Form) And dooku used Form 2. Obi wan you must know he was skilled teacher and a duel guy.

    I have fenced for years now. A faster paced version of this plus some more fencing theory to it should look like a proper fencing match. My personal fencing style is more defensive (properly defending myself and forcing the opponent to try to overcome me - then as soon as they make a single mistake lash out and score a point), I see this as the perfect lightsaber form for me. Also, Christopher Lee was a fencer.

      Shaak Ti used that combination, my speed and movements of Ataru and the accuracy and stamina of Makashi, going full speed at the start and once tired, falling back on Makashi till you catch your breath, main weakness being defensive vulnerability and over extending

    • @thewarriorrlsh
      @thewarriorrlsh 4 года назад

      This is exactly what I use. It requires extremely precise movement and rapid attacks. the best way I can describe it is like playing chess with 0.00001 seconds to make your move, and when you do make a move you're mentally and physically tired and then you have to make that move at least once every second. It requires dedication that's for damn sure

    • @Jojaderr
      @Jojaderr 4 года назад

      @@thewarriorrlsh To me, using Makashi and Ataru feels kind of like a glass cannon, since both forms lack defensive capabilities and rely on ending the battle quickly as to not prolong it. Yet if you're outnumbered, this is not the combo you'd wanna use.

    So I like this form and all, and I’ve been using it for years, but the main problems with it as a lightsaber technique is that anyone with just an ounce more strength than you could easily knock you off guard and counter attack. Another is that the hand itself is so vulnerable without cross guards. All in all this form is best used when fighting another form 2.

      So they issue is your trying to out strength an opponent with a form designed around parry and repost, not blocking. While there are a few blocks in historical fencing, the primary form of defense is parrying. Using your blade and the opponents momentum to create openings to capatalize on. "But what if they go to strike your blade or block your attacks? That's where they foot work comes into play. The Fencing stance is desinged to keep the body weight centered and have the upper body stationary as the lower body moves (think of it as a tank in the desert, the turret stays still and on target, while the treads bounce up and all around). You maneuver the blade with small percise wrist motions while retreating just enough with the footwork, so that you can be safe but without opening up to much distance.
      As a Fencer and a Practioners of HEMA and Kenjutsu, I find that people have a harder time dealing with the small, percise, and quick movements of fencing the most. Unless your up against another Fencer, then its easy to mix it up and throw them off.
      Basically making sure you don't become to ridgid in one discipline and making sure you spar with others outside of your normal style.
