I like having multiple sketchbooks, so I can pick out which one I want to draw in depending on what I feel. I have a main sketchbook, where I want to make things look interesting and full or finished. And then I have a lot of loose sketchbooks where I just doodle and allow myself to be messy and scribble.
If anyone is reading this, I'd like to present an idea. Allow yourself to use random scrap paper and rip them apart and glue them to a page. If you mess up, paint over it or glue something over it or use sticky notes. I like making my pages look as interesting as I can this way. Right now I'm making a spread out of crayons , I messed up and glued a ripped page of a book over it . It makes it feel less intimidating and more interesting

I have a sketchbook I started in 2020 that I kinda gave up on so I'm trying to finish it finally. It has a lot of unfinished drawings/failed drawings that I really hate so I like putting sticky notes over those drawings and drawing something new

@@redbengal16 ohh that sounds fun :0 I had a sketchbook like that once, and it took a year to finish it because what I would do was cover up the drawings with construction paper and just cut out drawings from my doodle books. I don't recommend I feel like melting everytime I look at that sketchbook . Sticky notes are more interesting :D

Personally, my sketchbook has become like a diary to me. I have a problem with keeping rubbish like sweet wrappers, pieces of boxes, labels and receipts, so I just slap em into my sketchbook, doodle around them, make some scribbles and bam there's my whole mood for the day. My sketchbook is a representation of my mental status, and I consider it a window into my imagination :D

That's why I think is good to keep many sketchbooks depending on the skills or stuff you want to work on. For me it works like this, I hope it helps somebody:
    - cheap sketchbooks for FULL anatomy practice and line practice. Don't ever finish a drawing here! I also limit myself to use pens or force myself to never erase if I use pencils (the thing is to train focus and practice, not making "beautiful" drawings).
    - medium quality sketchbooks for finished drawings, wether they're colored or not. I use them for my character concepts.
    - mix of these on iPad for digital practice and finished works. I do recommend trying many drawing apps!
In my experience, you don't need expensive sketchbooks, unless you use watercolor, copics, etc., which usually need a specific type of paper.

I used to be kind of jealous of those beautiful sketchbooks you always see on youtube. But I knew it would be a lot of work to make every page look good, and then I'd get lost in that rather than just drawing for fun. So what did I do? I keep 2 sketchbooks now. One I call the "artbook" and one is the "sketchbook". My last "artbook" took over a year to complete, and I spent a lot of time making it look neat. It's one of those more expensive sketchbooks with thick paper and a hard cover. I'll add things like washi tape, watercolor and stickers to make pages look cool. I'll make finished illustrations and spreads. Even the more messy sketches I'll take time to refine. It's something closer to what you will see on youtube. And It's the kind of book I would feel comfortable showing other people.
While the "sketchbook" is just for some free non serious sketching for myself. It will often be one of those cheap sketchbooks with thin paper you can get in random stores. I'll make random doodles, thumbnails, warmup sketches and just draw whatever I feel like. None of the pages will look necessarily "pretty" but that doesn't matter, it's just somewhere I can chill out for a bit. It will be chaotic and messy, and I rarely have any sort of finished drawings or color in it, compared to the "artbook" where I have a lot. And though I don't know if this is a method that will necessarily fit everyone, it has been working out for me. Now I have a space where I don't need to worry about everything looking good, but also a good looking book that I can be proud to show off from time to time.

Problem is, sometimes I don't end up finishing a sketchbook because it fills me with that dread of not having one and trying to keep it for a little while longer before it's filled out.

I’m having a really hard time with my art. I’m practicing and improving but everything just feels so empty and dead. I want to be able to look at my sketchbook and see creativity, emotion and art but all I see is empty pages. There’s paintings and drawing on all the pages but it’s like they aren’t even there. They aren’t bad and I don’t hate them but I’m starting to hate art and I don’t know what to do. I’ve taken breaks and experimented with new things but nothings working.

    • @42lexicon

this could be because your drawings dont have "meaning". so if your drawing a person that just looks cool, instead make it a charater. or if your drawing a cool building or castle/bedroom etc, instead make the building have a 'story' for example; not just a castle but an evil castle, then you can draw who would live in that evil castle, draw what the gaurds would look like, draw a scene that happens in this castle (eg a ball, a fight scene etc). or for person think of this persons personality or draw what they do on the daily,, draw what kind of friends you think this person may have. and for animal; think of where it likes sleep or how it hunts its food and draw that. or if your showing emotion in an art piece so for eg, if its sadness and its of a person crying, think of what this person is crying about and draw this person with something that shows the sadness (if there lonely, you could have them in a room with people having fun outside the window and have the lonely person looking longingly at them) and if you want, you can even start getting metaphorical- so a person who had a breakup but the painting is of this person holding a broken vase of dead flowers. the idea here is adding a story/context makes you have more direction with what you want to draw and what you want to practice. atleast it helped me (ur comment sounded alot with what i was struggling with once, my drawings looked cool/pretty but felt empty/un inspiring) (soz 4 the long comment) :)))

I finally have been drawing in my sketchbook alot more. I am currently using HIQ
Watercolor Fine Stroke that I got from Five Below, and when I tell you I am not disappointed in how I kept going back and just do doodles and gradually becomes more detailed drawings. The sketchbook itself is a ring one but it's small and doesn't give me anxiety that I'm not doing enough. Yeah there some blank pages but they could always be filled with random stuff. I plan on using scrap paper that is used for paint sloshes that will be pasted in there for a collage.
Granted some, if not most of the pages are Vegeta, from Dragon Ball, and tbh drawing him is fun and makes me happy. If I have a new style I want to try, I draw him. I am expanding myself to drawing my ics again but hey, 😏✋🏾 I gotta eat my vegetables.
I love sketchbook tours and just drawing, painting, etc. in mine along side who ever I'm watching is just a great feeling. Even if mines isn't fabulous, it's mine. And it great.
It's yours, practice the way you want and have fun. Use glitter glue, paste photos, laminate your favorite characters on pages and make notes on the with doodles....do you. ✨🌈💕

So as an old person(tm) on the internet I remember the ye old days where there wasn't sketchbook tours. it's a blessing and a curse. I think it's funny that we're even having this conversation. I don't know I didn't have to think about what the purpose of it was I knew it was for me and only me. I kept so many of them just to look back on how far I've come and I love them all even my beginner work. They're like a beautiful little time capsule into my mind seeing what I was obsessed with, what OCs I started to develop I'm kinda glad I didn't grow up around this Era of exposure. At the same time though I love watching sketchbook tours and sketch with me streams or videos. It's like having a friend chat while you draw. I've even learned a hell of a lot more from the younger generation than I did with the old heads! They kept all the good stuff hidden away unless you had actual art classes or college level courses. There wasn't shit I'm glad I'm in the future now it's a much kinder environment that's willing to be open. They have opened my mind up and I'm glad. I just wish there was a better balance but I suppose that comes from the proverbial you and how you handle your social media use. Mental health is so important to me and I just want the youth(tm) to be alright and not give up just because it doesn't have perfect composition or they feel their skill level isn't up to par. Sorry old person rant but I just care that the kids are alright.

I get the smallest size of portrait strathmores, and then I draw in 10 dollar medium boy portrait sketchbooks and actually draw in those, and then I collage those drawings into the baby sketchbooks. I love it, and if I wanna do a big drawing, I do a big drawing baby. Then I fold it up and write “There is dude in here” on it and tape it in there. It’s great, I’m 9 pages into my most recent one, I’ve got a lot more pages to go, and the 9 pages are so thick that it’s thicker than the like 91 other pages. It’s thin paper but that doesn’t matter cause the 10 dollar medium ones are really nice paper.

I agree with you. A sketchbook is what you decide to make in it. I keep 2 sketchbooks at once. One has tan paper in it. Sometimes I just feel like drawing on tan paper.

My sketch books usually contain the things that i like/ care about theyre not usually meant for anyone else except myself unless im drawing for that person. I wouldn't usually draw anything i dont like unless it was for someone else. And thats rare cause most of my peices are for 100% me. It may sound kinda selfish but its my sketch book so i can do whatever the frick i want with it. Honestly at this point if a drawing looks like shit i look at and go "it is what it is" and move on. Cause no one else but me sees it.

I don't mind having mutilpe sketchbooks it just takes up alot of space, i have one that's just for class acrylic paint work, i have one thats a mix of random sketchings from high school and now for class pencil work and i have one for "im in the mood to draw but dont feel like using my drawing tablet" each sketch books has a diffrent purpose and look to it but i like to look through all of them because i can picture where my head was at at the time of drawing! None of them are perfect and thats fine by me because it give me a break from digital art

my sketchbook is quite honestly my only safe space, so i really had to stop myself from being so hard on my sketchbook. because what's the point of a safe space if even then im being so negative to myself?

one of my favourite things about doing art at uni is that it forces me to keep two sketchbooks. one where I simply draw gay shit, aka my regular sketchbook where I draw finished stuff, sketch, draw steam engines because that's where my brain is right now. and then there's one where I do stuff I'm forced to do for class that I don't like and also stick fifty pictures of whatever the hell as inspiration and write down my process and honestly it's freeing

Love the idea Purple Sketchbook, Pink sketchbook etc. I may steal it hihi. Page 3 is my favorite, I really like the design of that character of yours. Also, how much time did you spend to finish those pages? I feel I am really slow at drawing and I would like to improve my speed, don't know how tho.. Well, I am waiting for a full sketchbook tour. And obviously I have to go find your pink sketchbook tour right now. See you around ^θ^

How long I spend on a spread really depends on what it is. The last drawing took me about 30 minutes, but the page of studies took me about an hour. Also, feel free to use the color sketchbook idea!

I found watching sketchbook tours kinda counterproductive. My skill level is nowhere near to those artists and my sketchbook currently is for studies, experiment, practice and a whole lot of frustration, but watching those amazing, tidy structured sketchbook videos mostly just taking away time from me actually drawing and gave me the feeling how inadequate my skill is. My sketchbook is for learning, building a visual library and figuring things out. Nowadays I watch free art/anatomy videos, tutorials of gesture drawings and beginner watercolour videos.

I literally have 2 sketchbooks goin on at the same time all the time
    I have a Din A3 sketchbook and a Din A5 usually
The bigger one (A3) is just for figure studies MOSTLY sometimes I do just randomly draw my oc's or make fanart but with the stuff I learnt from those studies
And the smaller one is both for a Manga I'm currently working on and all of the above, sort of a very messy whatever the fuck I feel like doing at the time sketchbook
BUT another one of their purposes are: Sometimes I feel like drawing B I G and sometimes I feel like drawing smol because I hate wasting space on a big ass sheet of paper when I feel like drawing small but I usually just end up drawing like 4 things max and so the smaller sketchbook is better for that in my case
Also sketchbook doesn't look nor sound like a word anymore what have we done-
