My advice to solving this problem is to force yourself to get new hobbies and try new things, or go back to old forgotten hobbies.
I used to draw/design buildings and rooms for fun but now that I'm getting my degree in architecture it feels like weird practice. I mean its still fun, but it feels like if I'm drawing buildings anyway I should just actually do my homework. I went back to rollerblading and since it's so different it feels refreshing. I'm also trying to learn how to do a back handspring finally, and going back to gymnastics and exercising.
Idk I've just felt like branching out helped me, but then again our situations aren't exactly the same so 🤷

I can relate to this so much: "flying was fun before I started doing it for a living," sums this up really well. It's nice to see people talking about this because it's never really discussed that much. Don't be afraid to take breaks man, because you should never have to push yourself to where you stop enjoying art because it's become so much of a chore.

The protagonist of the movie is a little witch called Kiki, who leaves home to complete her training and become independent, like all young witches her age have to. She settles in a little town and opens a delivery service, because flying is what she loves to do and does best. But as the story progresses, she slowly stops to enjoy flying to the point where she can`t fly at all...

It definitely helps to take breaks, watch and read and listen to lots of other content, shows, music, etc. Especially if you're into storytelling w/ art, it's very difficult to create if you don't consume to fuel tht creativity. This is super relatable omg. I plan applying for art school in december, and I've been thinking about this a lot. I love art, I love making comics, they're basically all I do, but its been a bit stressful. I'm making my portfolio rn and whenever I try to draw for fun, I think "is this good enough for a school? is this good enough to add to my portfolio? i need to make this look as composed and interesting and good as possible" and analyzing it for flaws instead of having fun with it. I've been trying to pick up my old hobbies as a way to cope. Which is hard, bc my old hobbies were mostly team sports and corona is still a thing, but its a work in progress.

I felt the same thing when I started professionally publishing my novels. What I dis to keep the divide between work and play was to get a new hobby (for me that was art) and when it comes to writing, I write by hand when I'm having fun designing worlds and characters and I type on the computer when I'm doing the actual work of writing. Having that clear divide between mediums helps a lot to keep work and play separate. Having a daily goal also helped because once I hit that word count, I'm done. Anything else is just for fun. Pet projects help too. Projects that have no goal or end date and that doesn't even have to be good. I have a project that is intentionally insane just because it amuses me.
    BTW, love the drawing.

Sometimes I feel the same while giving classes. I'm studyig to become a teacher one day in the future. Because I like langugages I decided to study my carrea. However, sometimes it is difficult to come up with material, lessons or even the mood to teach. Or, in the other hand, when I read there is a voice telling me "hey, don't you have to read more serious things?", but I give a faq about it :'V Watching youtube videos, drawing and watching series are my "happy place" where I can enjoy and take a little brake.
Hope you continue doing well. I know how stressfull could it be but, at those times, we should just breath and make another thing. That guilty feeling must ended.

Thank you so much for talking about this. As an author, I struggle a lot with writing in my free time because I have to write massive amounts for school about topics I don't really like, and it just creates this huge burn out that makes it very, very difficult to find joy in creating something for myself. (The perfectionist mindset probably doesn't help.) What I've found so far is that if the content is different that what I'm supposed to write for classes, I can try to find moments of inspiration to indulge myself in. I really admire you for mentioning this struggle, because in art it's extremely relevant.

I have procrastinator disease so l haven't made videos in a hot minute but I definitely felt this sorta pressure when I was doing grade 11/12 art, because I had to do so much work and was pretty much constantly either doing art or having to make my journals look nice and neat so my overly-critical teacher wouldn't mark me down, and I really noticed the blurring of lines between doing personal art and working (especially since I was making very guilty pleasure art for school since we could choose whatever we wanted as our theme)

It's really good art! I've only seen a couple of your videos, but the issues you're facing remind me of another youtuber called Lavender Towne. Her and other's videos discussing being a pro artist help put what you're saying in context. I can't be a pro artist right now, or even post much of my art but I'll reach a balance eventually. I don't know if you've already tried this or how effective it is, but going off of your dog walking idea, if you designated certain days for script writing or comics (Idk if you do them) and designated certain days, like Saturday, for only drawing non-work art and certain days, like Sunday or Thursday, for not doing any art then it might help space things out more so that you can dedicate specific days to publicly shared art. Again I don't know if that would really work because following a strict schedule might not be for everybody.

I can definitely relate to the "I should've filmed this" struggle and yeah it's hard.
I have the oposite problem with fan art. I draw my characters a lot but I know people don't care about them, whilst people don't care about my fanart either, unless it was my mob psycho 100 fan art but on tumblr. One thing I've noticed is that people don't care about certain fandoms on insta. I've started scheduling a lot of posts to go on instagram lately because I draw a lot and there were a lot of drawings I've done last year that i was too chicken to post because they were drawings of my ocs but scheduling a big buffer of art gives me more time to do other things and I don't have to worry about posting consistently and I don't have the time to watch my likes and follows like a hawk from the minute I post because the minute I schedule a post, I just forget it exists which is good for me. idk where this ramble went so yeah
