Originality is important when u r making a remake, because there must be a reason as to why someone would appreciate a remake, and that reason is that the remake is at least somewhat different from the original project. Because otherwise there would be more reason to settle with the original project over the remake. Why watch the remake, if the remake is exactly like the original? 😅😅😅 but ofc elitist movie goers want everyone to be convinced that the best way to make a remake of a movie, is to make it exactly like the original master pice. Because originality is dead, and that people would just rather watch the same exact movies over and over again.
That’s why this movie is so horrifying to me. Let me tell you a little story. My grandpa shows me a lot of old classic shows and films he grew up with. And i remember as a little kid probably 5 or 7 he showed me The Blob from 1958. And back then that movie scared me. This simple old movie scared the heck out of me as a kid so much so I used to sleep with the bed covers over me out of hope that it would protect me from the Blob if it came for me while i was sleeping. Now of course as I grew up I realized how cheesy and phoney the movie actually is. And then he showed me the 1988 remake. Yeah at age 17 or so my grandpa and I sat down to watch the remake and I thought it wouldn’t be too bad but as we watched it I realized that this movie basically took whatever fears 5 to 7 year old me had towards the blob and basically multiplied it by 10 because this movie not only scared me but disgusted me. The way the humans are digested by the blob was so sickening after my grandpa and I finished the movie I had a hard time eating lunch! I know this sounds silly but I don’t do well with horror movies. I always recommend both versions of the blob to people because I firmly believe The Blob 1988 is a great example on how to redo a classic movie while doing your own thing with it.
Back in 1988 this movie was a sleeper. I recall seeing this in the multiplex in Michigan. Summertime in Michigan is the season of outdoor activities..so sitting in a dark cinema was not a big draw. Had this film been released in the fall..I'm sure they might have had a bigger hit. But, all in all...this movie was a real thrill. Great special effects and a diverse cast. I must have viewed it about 6 or 7 times in the theater. But the Blockbuster era was where it really took off....a real treat to watch on a rainy night on your home Sony TV...those were the days. Thanks for the recap...love the channel..great perspective of one of my favorite flicks.
The Blob, both the original and the 88 reboot, were two of my favorite horror movies growing up (Along with Creature from the Black Lagoon, which has yet to be remade thank god). The original still has the idealistic 50s charm, But this is one of the best remakes of all time, with loads of 80s swagger. so frickin cool.
Not sure what happened to that comment.... But yes, I was going to add an asterisk, that Del Toros "Shape of Water" is sort of a spiritual homage to "Creature", and while he did toy with the notion of remaking the original for many years, "Shape of Water" is not a direct remake. That being said, it is a masterpiece in it's own right.
This is how remakes are meant to be done.... not a frame by frame copy, just enough ‘similarities’ to the source material while also giving it a feeling all its own...
I recently re-watched this movie this week and to this day I still love it! I always remember the game I used to play with my siblings where we would chase one another around the house in a large blanket we pretended was the titular creature. It definitely is an example of a remake done right in an age where remakes fall short of the original.
The Thing and the Blob were both my childhood favorites, they blew my mind about potential dangers beyond claw and fangs, things so alien they lack a true form.
The Theatre in the original film has a festival every year called “The Blobfest” in Phoenixville, PA. It’s crazy popular. Everyone gets to run out of the theatre at the end of the showing of the movie. It’s worth the trip, but tickets sell out within hours.
Seems like in the 80s they nailed 3 remakes of the most popular 50s horror films. The Fly, The Thing and The Blob. The answer to why they were so good is simply because they had updated them in the right way, by not copying everything shot for shot. Oh and the special effects on all these movies were incredible and still look great. Practical Is photorealistic, CGI always looks off, the lighting and movement is inorganic and on top of that the actors aren’t reacting to anything and it shows.
The 80s actually nailed a few 50s remakes. Some I'm still discovering were actually remakes. And totally agree with practical effects. I loathe CGI and hollywoods overuse of it. Especially since now most movies look more like videogames than actual movies.
This is hands down one of THE examples of what and how a remake should be. Not just cheap cash in or "they didn't have cell phones or cgi back then" lazy updating. Sadly I've only seen it maybe twice when I was younger. I remember liking it, but it just wasn't one of the flicks I caught in heavy rotation on cable back in the day.
When the child died in the sewer, I got really scared for the other characters because it broke a rule for me. Once that happened, it was a free for all--anyone could die in this movie.
One of the best horror remakes ever made. Part of a nice lineup with _King Kong_ 1976, _Invasion of the Body Snatchers_ 1978, _The Thing_ 1982, _The Fly_ 1986, and _Little Shop of Horrors_ 1986. _Invaders From Mars_ 1985 was decent and I also heard _Cat People_ 1982 was pretty good too, so I gotta see it.
I'm glad you included Invaders from Mars. I loved that movie as a kid and rewatched it recently. It still holds up. And Cat people is actually pretty good. Not spectacular but definitely worth a watch.
The Blob remake is my favorite of the 3 great remakes of the 1980s. The Thing and The Fly are great but The Blob is just special to me for a few reasons, some personal.
One of the most underrated remakes of all time. This film is how you honor an original and make it your own film as well/something a tad different. Another good example is the evil dead remake (2013) or continuation/sequel.

1988 Blob is how you remake a film. Just like The Thing. You give them something new while respecting the property and not going in a more wild direction than the already wild premise.
Just watched this again after not having seen it since it's theatrical release. Absolutely top to bottom fantastic. I can't believe it had just kind of slipped from my brain for decades.
The blob 1988 and evil Dead 2013 both share the top spot for my all-time favorite remakes. And yes, I know that evil Dead technically isn't a remake, but let's not split hairs here. The blob was one of the first film's that genuinely scared the s*** out of me when I was a kid.
@@jimbowlan5804 I fully agree but I disagree at the same time. Sam Raimi, Robert Tapert, and Bruce Campbell along with the film's director Fede Alvarez say that the movie is Canon 2 the original trilogy and takes place in the same universe, as merely a new entry. It is extremely similar in characters and structure to the original, it even uses dialogue and audio clips from the original, but it is not a remake. Not according to the creators and producers and the shepherds of this franchise. But one could say that it is technically a remake. So like I said, I agree and I disagree. You are both right and wrong. Either way, it's still my favorite of any remake or reboot. Like I said, this and the blob 1988.
I burned this movie into my mind, nine times in 40 days on HBO, another 12 times in the next year on HBO, CINEMAX, and broadcast TV, and into my DVD collection as soon as I got a job and started making money in 1999. Simple and very good to see regardless of the time of day.
One of the greatest underrated horror remakes of all time and a classic 80s B monster movie. I remember watching this scary film when it made its broadcast premiere on TV and boy it was scary & fun to watch. I had a great time. Too bad there won't be a sequel to this wonderful remake, which I and many others was hoping there will be a sequel judging from the ending.
The 50's original movie is so painfully boring and the 80's version is so incredible and jaw dropping grotesque I had my first nightmares as a child because of how terrifying it was.

For me anyway. And before everyone starts sounding off about how evil Dead 2013 is not a remake, yes I know this. It's one of those movies that is a remake and is not a remake. But splitting hairs aside, let's face it, it's a remake. But it's a sequel. And that's why I love it. But I'm here to talk about the blob, so I digress! I love the blob 88 remake for the simple fact I am from Abbeville,Louisiana! I was 4 at the time of release so I didnt even realize until a few years later when I watched it that a lot of scenes were filmed here. seeing places that are still here like the courthouse and old theatre and ppl I know that were extras was cool to see! definitely a fan of all the nostalgia.
The 1980s horror got incredible remakes like John Carpenter’s The Thing, David Cronenberg’s The Fly and now that Blob remake is remarkable. Got classic fun with terror especially the make up effects of killing people by the vicious blob. So sad it didn’t make any money but thanks to cult status, it became a classic. Also I loved the end credits soundtrack called Brave New World by Alien. People, you need to watch this movie. It’s a classic.
I remember first watching this film with my parents years ago. We knew of the Blob story because of the first film from the 50s, and we didn't know it was rated R because it wasn't listed at the time. Still, I found the movie enjoyable and watch it from time to time.
Both films are honestly classics. The originals effects still impress me even if they are simple. In the modern era I know it would just be CGI. Not insulting cgi of course, but an actor has an easier time playing a role if they can actually see the thing.
Loved this move as a kid at 5 my mom was a big king and horror fan.it's one of the last memories I have of her before I walked in to her in middle of a heart attack as a kid
Without these monster movies, we wouldn't have them as inspiration for B.O.B.(The Blob), Missing Link(Creature From The Black Lagoon), Dr. Cockroach(The Fly 1956), Ginormica(Attack of the 50 Ft Woman), and Insectosaurus(Godzilla) in Monsters Vs Aliens.
I still own the DVD of the 1988 film. When I was a kid back in the late 90s and early 2000s, Sci Fi used to show old movies and shows. There was one movie or show I'm trying to find. Its plot involves this woman searching for her father, and when she finds him, she finds out he is the leader of a colony of mutant women, and he impregnated several of them, and while she tries to escape, she witnesses a woman giving birth. And you can see the baby's hand coming out. I forgot what the movie or show is called.
This remake scard me so bad as a kid. It was the sink sceen, I couldn't hardly take a shower for weeks. I'd be too scared to get under the water above the drain hole. So I had to tilt the water head to shoot as far as possible and wash in a hurry staring at the drain terrified. Lol
The blob needs a sequel. I would love a sequel to the 80s remake but have it connect to the 50s blob movie (it can be possible: have the remake take place in a different town). My idea would be that the blob was thawed out in the 70s sequel ( son of blob). They escaped but was captured again then meadows captured it (which leads into the 80s remake) . Have the new sequel take place in CA.
I hear this so many times about marketing films, specifically older films, that the reason they didn't do well was because the studio didn't market it very much. How does that even happen? Any film that a studio makes, big or small, should be properly marketed so they can return on their investment. It's just common sense. If you make a film, market the hell out of it. And that goes for all the films that your studio makes. I just don't understand how stuff like this has ever or continues to still happen.
something i still dont get about the 1988 Blob remake. the preacher has a piece of the blob in a small mason jar. Wouldnt the piece of the blob like squeeze through between the lid and jar pretty much anyway?
And you can say whatever you want about Rob Zombie, but I'm a huge fan of both his music and his films. The Munsters was the first film of his that I absolutely did not care for. Once upon a Time, he was attached to do his own version of The blob. It would have revolved around a monolith and all kinds of cool stuff. I would have liked to have seen his version. I think Rob Zombie needs to do a Children of the corn movie. I feel like he would absolutely slay with that material. But I always wanted to see his version of The blob.
Hopefully I'll be able to get the scream release, they seem to be expanding into retailers and making larger print runs to bring down those "boutique" prices. It's a delicious Blob for sure.
I always wanted to see "The Blob vs. The Thing." Working its way through all of humanity and all wildlife, The Thing eventually makes it to the Arctic and accidentally awakens The Blob. Who would win that fight?
This movie is one of the gold standards of how to do a good remake, that honors the original, but does it own thing
it is one of the best remakes i have seen
It even flips the script. Kill a child! Make main characters only to quickly kill them off

Fantastic remake. Classic.
One of the best remakes ever
This remake scard me so bad as a kid. It was the sink sceen, I couldn't hardly take a shower for weeks. I'd be too scared to get under the water above the drain hole. So I had to tilt the water head to shoot as far as possible and wash in a hurry staring at the drain terrified. Lol
Jason Hewlett's choppy, immensely annoying narration drags this clip down but still, as a Blob fan, I do enjoy it.
Glad I wasn’t the only that had a hard time getting through this video due to the narrator
Great movie! The Blob is right up there with The Thing as one of the greatest remakes ever.
We need a WTF happened to THE STUFF!
Just couldn't get enough
🎶 "Beware of the Joblo. It creeps
And leaps and glides and slides
Across the floor
Right through the door."
Love this series! So interesting
love both versions of the movie. 58 and remake! so good. both cheese
Fell in love with Shawnee Smith watching this movie. 😊
Of all the constant remakes someone needs to remake the Blob again
One of my favourite movies
I still remember my dad renting this and the scene in the sewer is still etched in my mind.
Good underrated horror movie
I still find it funny that Sony(Columbia/Tri-star) used some clips from the Blob 88 in Ghostbusters 2.
Highly recommend the Scream Factory blu ray!
This was a fantastic remake
Hopefully I'll be able to get the scream release, they seem to be expanding into retailers and making larger print runs to bring down those "boutique" prices. It's a delicious Blob for sure.
The Blob is godlike in my Heart.
I HAVE THIS MOVIE ON DVD AND IT'S SO MUCH FUN.
Love this movie!! So glad I got to see it in the theater back in’88!! Shawnee Smith looks a little different? Wonder what that is?? 🍍🍍
Yeah but think how badass the special effects will be in the new one next year.
I like to watch this movie the first snow of the year.
I always wanted to see "The Blob vs. The Thing."
Working its way through all of humanity and all wildlife, The Thing eventually makes it to the Arctic and accidentally awakens The Blob. Who would win that fight?
This is up there with The Thing (82), The Fly (86), & Night of the Living Dead (90) as a remake that actually surpasses the original.
I loved the sequel by Larry Hagman.
This movie always gave me nightmares
I actually enjoyed that movie. I watched it a few months ago again.
Love both movies. ❤
I actually believe this movie is okay for an 8-9 year old to watch.
Probably because my dad let me watch it back in 88-89 when I was 8-9. 😂
Grew up watching horror
This movie is a triumph in SFX!
