I realize you did this video a couple years ago but wow, this is impressive! What a beautiful vase! I really like how you actually explain your process as you work. Thanks for sharing your talent!
Jim, this piece is absolutely beautiful. I love seeing the entire process from start to finish. The little imperfections make the piece even more beautiful, because they prove that this was entirely handmade, not something from an assembly line. Keep up the good work.
OMG! Another favorite piece. The colors, depth and dimensions on this piece compliment each other so well that it’s hard to describe how beautiful it came out. It looks like a bunch of small creatures captured in a time. Again, the incredible colors, depth and dimensions on this piece are perfect. Love these videos! 😁👍🏼🤍

For me the key to resin/wood turning is the amount of resin vs. wood. Usually with banksia pods there is more resin than pods, because they use whole pods. By cutting them into chunks the relationship and the look is entirely different. Great choice on your part. Thanks again for a great video.
Hi Jim. Banksia is pronounced as BANK C AH. .. You have done a beautiful job of one of our national botanical treasures. Banksia plants were named after Sir Joseph Banks , botanist on HMS Endeavour captained by James Cook in 1770.
BTW, by the time that the damaged Endeavour limped into what is now known as Botany Bay, the crew were on "hard tack" rations, having run out of fresh & preserved meat and vegetables. At that time "Botany Bay " was very different Sir Joseph Banks, the official Botanist was ashore collecting plant specimens, Captain Cook had the task of feeding his men as quickly as possible. He saw thousands of Stingrays in the shallows, easy targets for boat-hooks and had not yet named it Botany Bay. In his original journal, you can see where "Stingray Bay" was replaced with "Botany Bay", due to the "other world" Flora & Fauna being found! Interesting!
i love this piece! the biomorphic explosions and are fascinating, and the colors are fantastic. the shape lacks a little grace, but that’s not critical, just not a masterpiece. thanks for all your careful attention and patience. love, david
Lovely piece, just shows what can be done without a limit on one’s imagination. Good to see the dried out banksia pods being used for something other than fire starters. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺
@@MeadowDay There used to be 3 trees on a walk I used to do with the dog, the woody remains of the flower cone used to end up being littered on the ground, we do have some fabulous native trees and flora. Sadly those trees succumbed to flooding, got waterlogged and died. I did polish up the woody seed cones/pods to add to native display, yes I agree they are very unusual wood.
I like the fact that you use carbide tools and do such a beautiful job. It seems so many turners look down their noses at carbide tools, but you show it's not the tool but the artist that makes a project. What a beautiful project it is too.
You are 100% correct, carbide is an aid, it’s up to the turner to make it happen. I am a firm believer that if your going to be a turner you need to master the gouge but when it comes to resin, carbide is where it at! Thanks!
@Sprague Wood turning, l liked the Banksia Pod Vase video and I tried Pinecones as a vase & I'm very happy how it came out & gave it to my wife so she could give it to her grandma as a birthday present! Her grandma had a beautiful vase and someone broke into her home & stole everything and even the vase her late husband gave her & found old photo scrap book pictures and saw the same vase that was taken from her! And I spent many nights planning on how to recreate the same vase and that was a lot of work & my wife wasn't even upset or mad that I spended more time in my workshop and to make it short!!...the vase came out beautiful and it's sitting in the dining room in our home! Her grandma is now living with us and she can't continue being by herself and I suggested that she lives with us and my wife thought that was a great idea and loves spending time with her & going shopping and going to the hair salon and what ever makes her happy & it's totally fine with me!!
What a wonderful human soul! Ppl likeu in these comments give me hope. I'm 40. Dad died in my arms, cancer, 2018. Grandmaw in my dadsold house which is now mine in 2021. I grew up woodworking in the shop still behind my house. Wth my grandpaw, dad, and others. Much love everyone! ☝️☝️🙏🙏💪💪
I could see this in a museum. It is deep and rich and the palette is truly gorgeous and harmonious. I wonder what it would look like if lit from within? It's just beautiful!
This piece makes me think of what Earth must have been going through when the "Big Bang" was on the cooling side of creation. Still remnants of lava-like heat ready to get upset if it wasn't able to be left alone to just chill, and cool down in it's own way, in it's own time. As if there was life still perculating ...much like a fine cup of coffee in old fashioned coffee pot, on a campfire. Just let it finish "brewing", and Viola!! This is what you'd see. Creation on the chilling side of what just happened. LoL grin 😊. Yer making me think and see so many different things in your artwork, it's great to imagine such things. Thanks again for sharing Cap'n!! Full steam ahead, engage!! lol.
At one point during this video you mentioned the possibility of using this piece as a pencil holder. You are a very modest man, which is so sweet. But although your creations could be utilitarian, they are foremost works of art. They can stand alone and be admired for their aesthetic. A pencil holder! Good lord, no! ☺

Absolutely Stunning vase! Bravo! I find your videos not only fascinating but oddly satisfying. It's almost hypnotic watching you create, and seeing the results as you work instantly.
You are a real artist, doing a better job than many doctors, journalists and politicians this days. You are building up. They are destroying, killing and stealing. Please continue and perfect your awesome skills.
I'm totally diggin' the way the resin colors are playing off of each other. The red takes on an orange color in some areas. This is the coolest thing I've seen you do so far.
I am 70 years of age here in the UK and very active. I like to keep myself busy with both work (I'm not yet retired) and leisure activities. I think your work is so beautiful. Why didn't I discover this skill years ago? I have been reading up about taking it up as a hobby but it seems the abilities at your skill level take years of experience. Tell me I'm wrong..
It really depends on the individual. I’ve seen people take to it right away an produce works as good as mine or better, then I’ve seen others take more time to develop. Your passion for Woodturning will be the determining factor. Keep in mind, I’ve got 10s of thousands of hours at the lathe. Thanks for watching!
Well if this isn’t just the best random RUclips recommendation, love your work. I’m from Sydney, Australia and these are pronounced bank-see-ya, these are the flowers/seed pods of a really robust native bush species which is famous for needing fire (bush fires) to germinate the seeds.
Hi I'm an Aussie and you can get larger pods from older bushes. I have turned them and they look great with the pod holes showing through. Small vases or ornamental balls, eggs etc look really cool. Thank you again for sharing. Btw love your vase and having the little pockets I'd be happy with giving it a different texture. 👍
Hi absolutely love the beautiful work that you do, turning what seems like pieces of nothing into works of art. I have seen wood turning before but this has taken it to a whole new level of interest and respect for those who have the skill to master this craft. I'm a fan
I agree. The iridescent sheen created by the pearl colors is fantastic and makes everything you create look even more amazing with a little touch of magical. I like how the resin settled and made the green float all through the red and just create a really organic transition between the two colors. Btw, the voids were not caused by the seeds not being there, they were caused by material obstruction in the pods. Basically, the pods had holes surrounded by pod. You'll find that a lot with parts of the plants that aren't weight-bearing like stems, trunks and branches. Chances are, those voids were much more wet than other parts of the pod, so the drying process shrunk the material down so much that a noticeable void was created. Btw, trimming a foam piece can cause it to leave pieces behind. There is a much rarer risk of factory-fresh foam pieces doing this, but a home trim will increase that risk by a LOT. I think part of the problem is that the exterior of a foam piece always looks different from the interior, and exposing that interior exposes a weaker, more void-filled part of the foam and causes it to fail more.
Love how this vase looks! Beautiful colors & great design! I watch several similar channels & I appreciate the information, tips & advice you give viewers. Thank you!
It's interesting how the red color seemed to dominate the whole piece over the green. The craftsman in you knows there are flaws to fix, but the artist in you has to know when to stop. It's a stunning piece of work and not everyone can see what you think are flaws.
And the best part is, he is not satisfied. He wants to make it better. How to make the best still better? Wow. That's the most gorgeous vase I have ever seen.
Spectacular! I love the colours as they represent the red of some Banksia flowers and green of the foliage. Swapping out the red for an orangey-yellow if you ever do one of these again, would also look lovely :-)
Seeing this finished it is gorgeous. You should consider doing something similar and make a lamp out or it. Like the base of a lamp and put a shade on it and everything like a table lamp. But put some lighting inside the base or vase of the lamp. With a non dense reins and not thick walls, then put some led lighting or the old flicker bulbs inside it. I am just seeing the resin illuminated as a night light on a bedroom night stand. I mean it is a stunning vase and you are very talented. I certainly do not mean to turn this one into a lamp but to make one along the lines. I think it would pop at night just as much as the day. I have made a few knives in the past and I have seen people make knife scales out of pine cones too using resin like this. I only have a very amuture Shopsmith lathe(don't laugh) but you are making me to want to get back into this hobby. Using resin your mind really is the only limit on what you could turn. I did come across a large old school pressure cooker at a thrift store a while back and I grabbed it thinking I might want to make a pressure or vacuum chamber to stabilize some spalted almost rotten wood for knife handles and turning. You can get some real pretty wood out of a old piece of firewood left laying on the ground. Really this came out amazing.
@@SpragueWoodturning banksia only grow in Australia (it seemed like you said Austria) The pods are large, with a circumference of around 5 1/2- 6 1/2 inches, and a nearly solid central core. What you have appear to be banksia pods cut in half or quarters Whole pods are sometimes turned individually in Australia, l have one in front of me turned/hollowed into a toothpick holder You would love the (extremely expensive) display room l bought it from in Albarny,Western Australia. Wonderful wood work (dining tables, beds, chairs) useing many different wonderful native australian woods Your vase is wonderful too 💖
My experience, from building a 23' wood and epoxy boat, is that foam and epoxy application don't mix. Microfiber applicator is required. Try applying with a chip brush and then smooth with microfiber cloth. I used a microfiber roller and then tipped smooth with a brush. Also, you might want to thin the top coat of epoxy as it self levels without bubbles a lot easier.
Of the pieces you've done, I believe this to be my favorite so far. Your creativity and expertise are wonderful. I hope to have one of your works of art for my own. ❤

Banksia has overtones of red brown when wet ,that could contribute to the effect
You got it backwards, artists are never satisfied with their work.

@@SpragueWoodturning banksia only grow in Australia (it seemed like you said Austria)
The pods are large, with a circumference of around 5 1/2- 6 1/2 inches, and a nearly solid central core. What you have appear to be banksia pods cut in half or quarters
Whole pods are sometimes turned individually in Australia, l have one in front of me turned/hollowed into a toothpick holder
You would love the (extremely expensive) display room l bought it from in Albarny,Western Australia. Wonderful wood work (dining tables, beds, chairs) useing many different wonderful native australian woods
Your vase is wonderful too 💖
My experience, from building a 23' wood and epoxy boat, is that foam and epoxy application don't mix. Microfiber applicator is required. Try applying with a chip brush and then smooth with microfiber cloth. I used a microfiber roller and then tipped smooth with a brush. Also, you might want to thin the top coat of epoxy as it self levels without bubbles a lot easier.
Thanks for the advice, not sure what a chip brush is tho?

Of the pieces you've done, I believe this to be my favorite so far. Your creativity and expertise are wonderful. I hope to have one of your works of art for my own. ❤
Thank you so much!
