  • A video set to the hymn Dear Lord and Father of Mankind.
    The soundtrack was recorded live at the NBA Big Sing in Newcastle upon Tyne.
    Dear Lord and Father of mankind,
    Forgive our foolish ways;
    Reclothe us in our rightful mind,
    In purer lives Thy service find,
    In deeper reverence, praise.
    In simple trust like theirs who heard,
    Beside the Syrian sea,
    The gracious calling of the Lord,
    Let us, like them, without a word,
    Rise up and follow Thee.
    O Sabbath rest by Galilee,
    O calm of hills above,
    Where Jesus knelt to share with Thee
    The silence of eternity,
    Interpreted by love!
    With that deep hush subduing all
    Our words and works that drown
    The tender whisper of Thy call,
    As noiseless let Thy blessing fall
    As fell Thy manna down.
    Drop Thy still dews of quietness,
    Till all our strivings cease;
    Take from our souls the strain and stress,
    And let our ordered lives confess
    The beauty of Thy peace.
    Breathe through the heats of our desire
    Thy coolness and Thy balm;
    Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
    Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire,
    O still, small voice of calm.

    I always remember my girlfriend singing this hymn when she came through my back gate when I lived I Markham Street, York in 1974. She was singing this beautiful hymn of faith as she walked up the garden path. It was so special those moments I listened to her sing. I married her the following year.

      Amen. It is the Spirit of the Lord drawing you. Read His Word: Jesus is the Word of God; He is the Rock beneath our feet; His Word is the Rock we stand on (as did He). Ask, seek, knock; it will be given; you will find; the door will be opened. Jesus is the door. His Word is a fathomless deep but we begin by dipping our toes in. He is also the Truth and, yes, His Word is truth. He cannot lie. He never has; He never will. "Whosoever comes to Me, I will in no wise cast out." He is also "Jehovah Shammah" - the God who is there. That's why we can go to Him. We go with all our doubts, questions, fears: He gives us Himself and we 'taste and see that the LORD is good.' May He bless you richly and if you have already been brought to know Him may He continue to bless and keep you! He is able! He alone.

    1 Kings 19
    11. And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake:
    12. And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
    13. And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?
    Psalm 29:
    11. The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace. Psalm 37
    11. But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. Hebrews12
    28. Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: To God Alone Be All The Glory. Hallelujah. Amen. Oh Come LORD Jesus.

      how does one get jesus by simply asking? I asked for jesus and there was no jesus came to me that I could recognise as any jesus. could it be that jesus is simply your own state of mind? could it be that for jesus to come we must change our state of mind? not really putting my point across very well... but we think of this jesus as being some external spiritual being, but what if it's our own spiritual being and no amount of asking will bring it... therefore we can only rely on our own strength to be that christ consciousness we ask for guidance from. fuck life... just fuck life.

    Beautiful words. I never really paid attention to them before, but they are fitting for this age of constant distractions and entertainment. If we keep our lives quiet and simple, God can speak to and comfort us with a still, small voice. All the noise that surrounds us (physically, mentally, digitally, emotionally, spiritually) is just the earthquake, wind, and fire Elijah heard - God is not in them. We have to drink the "still dews of quietness" to hear him.
    Coming from a musician, this is hard to do ;-)

    Many of these Hymns, like this one, were written by patriarchs of a great nation . They have stood the test of time, and are still sung today. My encouragement is that these songs of praise written by divinely inspired composers, by those drawn close to Father God have not faded away.They still remain with us. When the breath of our lungs throw out these songs of praise we should be ever thankful that the Lord God has allowed us, to be, right from conception,

      I am sorry Friend John to contradict you, but these words were written by an American Quaker J. G. Whittier who also wrote the hymn 'O Brother Man Fold to Thy Heart Thy Brother'. The hymn is full of allusion to the Quaker practice of silent waiting upon the divine presence. Those who have experienced the profound 'silence of eternity' in the 'covered meeting' will intimately know that 'deep hush subduing all our words and works', which arises from communion with the 'still small voice' of the inward Light of Christ. The hymn may well resonate with Christians but it is a Quaker's creation.

    Loved singing this as a choir member, solo on O Sabbath rest bu Galillee. When it came to a hymn for our wedding, this jumped back into my brain, so fitting. My wife to be did not know it, but loved the melody and the serene words. She had her choice too, but the older people in the congregation, lots of them, was not married until my mid thirties, were familiar with this and loved it. Once again it has become special to me.

    I have now found out why its best to stay alive... after my deepest dark days of a few years ago, I have found someone very very special . She has listened to my problems , talked me through some really bad times...NEVER judged me... , Even cried down the phone to me and said "goodbye" as I was planning to end my life... she really has been my saviour .. I love her to bits... I still listen to this hyme as it helped me ( and still does ).. .I was "shipahoy 1000". So a big thankyou for all the kind messages you lot out there sent me ...

    I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (July 11), I played this for Sunday School assembly. However, it was to the tune, REST, composed by Frederick C. Maker, 1844-1927.

    "Dear Lord and Father of Mankind" is a hymn with words taken from a longer poem, The Brewing of Soma by American Quaker poet - John Greenleaf Whittier. The poem describes drug taking as a way of getting closer to God but ends with these words stating that closeness to God can only be achieved by quietness.
