  • Adam welcomes Alison Hughes and Nate Barefield--the founders of Beatrice Forms--to the cave to learn how his custom dress form was made with a 3D scan of his body. Using one of Adam's favorite shirts and dinner jackets, they demonstrate why a good fit is so important to costuming and tailoring, and even surprise Adam with a miniature body-double mannequin created to his measurements!

That's why bespoke clothing has a wonderful, comfortable fit. It's not made from 8 or 10 generic measurements like made-to-measure which are just alterations to a form. It's a whole constellation of measurements that capture your posture and how the neck and upper torso drape...and how your arms and legs move.

    1) Adam's model starts at $2500. Steep for the hobbyist, but on a professional level it's a solid investment.
    2) Did they mention where "Beatrice" comes from?
    3) Would've loved to see more about the photogrammetry stuff. I understand the process in general, but to have a specific outfit and then stand in a specific way are both new to me

Yeah i mentioned this when he posted the first video. It's just not realistic for the typical; cosplayer to spend $2500 or more when for about $30 you can do the exact same thing making the classic 'duct tape mannequin'. You need a helper and a couple of hrs but the result is a remarkable replica of yourself - ask me how I know. My Mandalorian, 10th Dr Who and now Halo Master Chief outfits fit me perfectly once they fit my 'DT mannequin" correctly

I've yet to watch (don't worry, I definitely will), but the thumbnail brings up a real annoyance of mine, in terms of the cut of a suit jacket in this current era: who took the poll that said every jacket must look a half a size too small on someone, even when tailored to that specific body?
As an example, look at 'Casino Royale' and Craig's tailored formal wear (fits wonderfully, I think) ... then, take a look at every other suit the man wears throughout the rest of his tenure as Bond: looks like they used the original measurements for that formal wear, without accounting for 'life' (ie: diet, training regimen for a film shoot, etc.) taking place. Always looked way too tight and uncomfortable to wear to these eyes.
Now, look at Connery's suits in his era: all tailored by hand on Saville Row, if I'm not mistaken, and not a single one looks too small on that mass.
Apart from that, I think - being a person who makes moulds and casts a fair bit of stuff, as a fun sideline in life - I'd still rather cast and mould a person's duplicate 'self' and make a form out of any number of the current thermoplastics available on the market these days, though pinning to those items would be a slight problem, although I'd be willing to do some testing on mixing and matching on them.

As a fashion designer I have some problems with this:
    1. This dress form only works for those who want to maintain the same body type, not for someone who ages, loses/gains weight, and/or went under body modification.
2.Even for the price of $15.99 it also would take up space if you had multiple different forms.
    3. Alison's comment comparing apparel making to cosplay felt snide, especially towards people like me who went to University in order to learn the basics (both traditionally and digitally) for patternmaking. She acted like doing the traditional way is somehow wrong or that cosplayers are better whether she meant it or not.🤨
    4. Not only was Alison being unintentionally rude towards apperal people (like me), but she also spread the myth of corsets "constricting" the body when in reality that's not how they work.🤦‍♀️
    5. In a post-Lizzo world body positivity is considered not only cringy, but also toxic and a lie. This is why body neutrality has become so prevalent now since people like me are so tired of how to feel about our bodies by others wether it be negative or positive.😬
