  • Dr. L Subramaniam plays RTP (Raga, Thanam Pallavi) in Raga Shanmukhapriya at the Sydney Music Festival, Sydney presented by Swaralaya Fine Arts Society.
    Special thanks to them for getting this on the video.
    Accompanied by DSR Murthy (Mridangam) & Ghantasala Satya Sai (Morsing)
    About the Raga :
    Shanmukhapriya is a rāgam in Carnatic music (musical scale of South Indian classical music). It is the 56th melakarta rāgam (parent scale) in the 72 melakarta rāgam system of Carnatic music. It is called Chāmaram in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music. It is said to be borrowed into Hindustani music from Carnatic music. A lot of compositions on Lord Murugan and Lord Shiva are based on this raaga.
    It is the 2nd rāgam in the 10th chakra Disi. The mnemonic name is Disi-Sri. The mnemonic phrase is sa ri gi mi pa dha ni. Its ārohaṇa-avarohaṇa structure (ascending and descending scale) is as follows (see swaras in Carnatic music for details on below notation and terms):
    ārohaṇa: S R₂ G₂ M₂ P D₁ N₂ Ṡ
    avarohaṇa: Ṡ N₂ D₁ P M₂ G₂ R₂ S
    About Ragam Thanam Pallavi:
    Ragam Tanam Pallavi is a form of singing in Carnatic music which allows the musicians to improvise to a great extent. It is one of the most complete aspects of Indian classical music, demonstrating the entire gamut of talents and the depth of knowledge of the musician. It incorporates raga alapana, tanam, niraval, and kalpanaswara. In more elaborate ragam tanam pallavis, a tani avartanam may follow.

      Pl. correct it as 'it' instead of what has been given above. It is a typing error. - "M.K. Subramanian."

    Sir wanted to understand if rag Madhuvanti is the hindustani classical equivalent of Shanmugapriya ragam?

    • @vinodknofgec
      @vinodknofgec 3 года назад +1

      It is hindustani equivalent of dharmavati.

    • @ganesaniyer813
      @ganesaniyer813 3 года назад +1

      Madhuvanthi is the derivative of Dharmavathi, which is Melakartha Raga.

    It would have been useful to students of music if the structure of the Pallavi were given such as the sahityam or bandish talam eduppu and Arudhi of the Pallavi.

    Why should accompanying musicians sit with the principal performer for so long, poor fellows? Why not join the main performer when required, in this case some 25 min. from start?

      @@tansuaksu Probably is the one responsible for the down vote too. And I can almost guarantee never listened to the whole piece. Very restrained mridangam playing.

      I'm taking a guess that he's mistaking the depth in the violin sound + Shruthi in the background as Hiss
