This was driving me crazy. It switched to the external once after monitor changes and reboots, but when trying to switch back to a different monitor, I could not get it to work again. This trick, did the trick :) Thank you, 5-stars

First it didn't work for my. Win10 said that it can't project to another screen and I need to update video drivers or replace videocard. (My screen is flickering, but I still can see a bit what is on it. Probably needs a new display cable).
But when I hit Esc during the start up to get into Bios and AFTER that hit FN-F4 - it did work! Unfortunately it didn't cured the flickering problem as I was hoping. But thanks for the tip!

Honestly the best thing to do is get another bad laptop around the house if you have one and use it and replace the screen. If you can replace the screen yourself carefully you should able to use it as a sub to at least get into your settings
