Pinaka III : India’s attempt to match long range artillery force of China

  • PLA’s Artillery threat
China has deployed advanced long-range rocket launcher near LAC. One of the Chinese artillery brigade is stationed 5,200 metres (17,000 feet) above sea level in Xinjiang military district. It is expected to be a long-range rocket launcher that can carry multiple 300mm [12-inch] or even bigger rockets with more than 100km of firing range. Over the years, China has developed several rocket systems with different ranges and the journey began in late 1990s.
    Chinese Smerch - A100
In 1997 China received a small number of Soviet Smerch multiple launch artillery rocket systems which was the most powerful multi-rocket system of its time. Eventually, China reversed engineered Smerch to develop its own indigenous rocket system which is called A100. The A100 artillery rocket system has 10 launch tubes for 300 mm artillery rockets. It is claimed that the A100 MLRS has a maximum range of 120 km, versus 90 km of improved Russian Smerch. It takes 8 minutes to prepare a launcher vehicle for firing. Once the rockets are launched it leaves its firing position within 2 minutes. Launcher vehicle is fitted with a satellite navigation system, to provide a real-time positioning data. This system can launch single rockets or full salvo. The A100 has underwent trial by the Chinese army, however PHL03 rocket system was selected which is also a close copy of the Smerch. The PHL03 is also a 300mm rocket with 12 launch tubes and range between 70-130 km. It is being replaced by new version PHL-16.
The Pakistan army has 450 plus Chinese A100 systems, mostly produced in Pakistan under its Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO).
    Chinese A200
The A200 is China’s Precision Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System(GMLRS) and upgraded version of A100. It is equipped with strapdown inertial navigation and GPS, and adds a front wing to control the flight trajectory. The rocket has maximum range of 290 km.
    Chinese A300 rocket
The Chinese A300 rocket is one of the latest artillery rocket systems of China. It is capable of firing rockets of different calibres which means it can also use pods of A200 and possibly other calibers. The A200 rockets have maximum range of 200 km. The A300 rocket has a maximum range to 290 km and can carry a 150 kg warhead. The rocket uses inertial and GPS guidance systems with CEP between 30 to 45 meters.
The launcher vehicle carries 2 pods with four 300 mm rockets each. Launcher is capable of single or salvo firing. It takes 50 seconds to launch a full salvo of 8 rockets. China also claims that each rocket can be targeted individually which means the A300 can hit up to 8 different targets simultaneously.
    PHL-16 : Chinese HIMARS
The Chinese Type PCL-191 or PHL-16 is the most advanced long-range multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) of China and can be considered has Chinese HIMARS. It is a modular system, and can use pods with 370 mm or 300 mm guided rockets.
The system can carry two 750mm Fire Dragon 480 tactical ballistic missiles, each with a range of up to 500km, or eight 370mm (1412 inch) rockets, each with a range of 350 km (220 miles)
    300mm Long Range Guided Rocket
At present India does not have indigenous 300mm rocket but has an imported one. Indian Army (IA) has 62 x BM-30 Smerch systems. The erstwhile Ordnance Factory Board has produces several rocket variants for the system.
Smerch is a 300mm single stage rocket with a larger payload and smaller range. Indian army uses 4 variants of these rockets which are having maximum range between 70-90 km. In January 2023, Indian army has released an RFI for the life extension of these rockets by private firms.Join this channel to get access to perks:

When our late Defence Minister Mr. George Fernandes said either in 1999 or in 2000, that our real enemy is China and not Pakistan, the entire country laughed at him and made fun of him. Irrespective of any political party, all called him a person who has lost his mind. Now, who is laughing looking at this hectic project being launched? Just imagine had Galwan not happened, whatever progress we are seeing now, even that would not have happened. The entire 90's and till mid 2000s, China has gone so far ahead of us that it will be very, very difficult to catch up with them in the long run. In every aspect, the Chinese military is far ahead in terms of military hardware. I am not sure when it comes to actual battle how much guts they will have to face death like our boys, but still, even if we win against them, it will come at a very heavy cost 😢😢😢.

The Chinese, being stupid people, have reverse engineered every single Russian/Soviet weapon system from guns and artillery to submarines, jet fighters, jet engines and even spacecraft. As a result, they have the full line of weapons that outrange anything India has. These weapons are available to Pakistan. India's DRDO/DPSUs, being superior intelligent "scientists", refused to reverse engineer anything, preferring to re-invent everything from screws and bolts to the full system. As a result, we don't have our own engines, submarines, guns, long range rocket systems, UAVs---the bread and butter war fighting requirements, making us the world's largest importer of weapons. The only successes we have had are from the private industry that produced the ATAGS and fast patrol boats but gorment refuses to allow them to compete. What to do.

Vayu Sena should be looking to retire Smerch and Grad, which are now obsolete. The future is Pinaka/Pralay/Prahaar. Maheshwarastra 1&2 being developed by Solar Group seem to fill the same niche as DRDO 300km range Pinaka, are they both the same project or two different ones? What with Israeli LORA missile and existing indigenous missiles, Rossiya's rockets should be sold off. There is no news about Prahaar, has that been inducted? With IIT Madra's ramjet shell, and long range glide bombs, the short distance seems to be well covered. Even loitering munitions are also effective in this range. Even against the PHL-16 : Chinese HIMARS which can carry two 750mm Fire Dragon 480 tactical ballistic missiles, each with a range of up to 500km, or eight 370mm rockets, each with a range of 350 km. Existing drones with 500km range or Pralay can answer this particular HIMARS style rocket wagon.

China has more superior logistics. They are building for a war against US and EU. India is a weaker opponent for them. India needs to not only come with new weapons but increase production to 3-4 times the current levels. Moreover we are limited by our limited funding. Also current government is weakening the social fabric by making hate comments etc. So we are weak internally. We are a great civilization culture wise but have failed in protecting our borders historically. Our military personnel are noble but our bureaucrats and politicians are not.

Indians are passionate about comparing weapons, but in fact, India has never experienced a real war. In war, weapons are secondary. The true strength is the supply in war and the fighting will of soldiers. In China, military personnel are known as the "cutest people". There is a Chinese proverb: without a country, there is no home, and military personnel are the backbone of the country. Thank you to our brave soldiers of the People's Liberation Army who are always ready to defend the border of our motherland. No matter how India develops its military, it cannot surpass China. Whether in the past, present, or future, China can always defeat India. This is determined by the history and culture of both countries. There are too many arguments to prove, and I don't need to elaborate. You can refer to the history of both countries. Chinese people value the spirit of dedication and sacrifice. Do not surrender, do not yield, resist to the death, and face death as if returning on the battlefield. If Chinese soldiers surrender on the battlefield, it is a great shame, and the spirit of dying rather than yielding is deeply engraved in the bones of every Chinese person. These are all things that Indians do not possess.

@@AB001DRegarding the Vietnam War - A: Since modern times, Vietnam has become a colony of French colonizers, China has become a semi colony, and the destinies of the two countries are closely related. As neighboring countries with a strip of water, they are interdependent and brotherly. A group of revolutionaries from the Vietnamese Communist Party have all had experiences of fighting in China, and the Communist Party of China and Vietnam have formed a deep fighting friendship in their respective struggles for national independence and liberation.
During the US invasion of Vietnam and the Vietnam War, both China and the Soviet Union provided assistance to Vietnam and jointly opposed the US. China sent air defense forces and engineering forces into Vietnam. After three years of fighting, it shot down and injured more than 3000 US aircraft. The People's Liberation Army sacrificed more than 1000 people and also provided a large amount of materials to Vietnam. During the thirty years of Vietnam's resistance against the United States, France, and the country, China provided approximately 20 billion US dollars in aid to Vietnam, strongly supporting Vietnam's liberation struggle.

@@AB001DRegarding the Vietnam War - B: After the end of the Vietnam War of Resistance Against the United States in 1975, leaders such as Lai Sung did not seize the opportunity to focus on healing the war wounds, restoring and developing the economy. Instead, they were carried away by victory and completely deviated from Ho Chi Minh's line. Li and his group had forcibly implemented leftist socialist transformation in the inner south, relying on the support of the Soviet Union to vigorously promote regional hegemony and attempting to piece together the "Indochinese Federation". Guided by this erroneous path, Vietnam openly opposes China. Vietnam began to exclude Chinese crazily, suppressed the normal life of overseas Chinese, and led to a large number of Vietnamese overseas Chinese returning to China. At the border between China and Vietnam, armed conflicts were provoked, and armed personnel were dispatched to cross the border to invade, injure border residents, demolish boundary markers, devour the Chinese border, and create incidents such as Punian Ridge and Tingmo Mountain. The relationship between China and Vietnam has become severe. Tear up the statement made by the Government of Vietnam in 1958 that the the Dongsha Islands, the Xisha Islands, Zhongsha Islands and the Nansha Islands belong to China, and occupy more than 96% of China's the Nansha Islands.
In order to maintain border security, on February 14, 1979, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China publicly issued a notice to the whole country: preparing to start self-defense and counterattack operations. This is neither a declaration of war nor a surprise attack, which is unique in the world and demonstrates to the world that China's war against Vietnam is a self-defense counterattack. On February 17, 1979, along the Sino Vietnamese border, ten thousand guns fired in unison, marking the official start of the self-defense counterattack against Vietnam.

@@AB001DAbout the Vietnam War C: In the 1979 self-defense and counterattack war against Vietnam, China achieved the expected objectives of the war, disrupted the strategic deployment of the Soviet Union and Vietnam, destroyed the industry and mining industry in northern Northern Vietnam, which is of great significance for protecting China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as the peace and stability of Southeast Asia and the world. China's self-defense and counterattack against Vietnam took two months, and its strategic goal was safely achieved. On May 17, 1979, the Vietnamese People's Daily published a statistical table titled "Preliminary Statistical Table of Some Visible Losses as of the End of March 1979", with excerpts as follows:
      (1) Destroyed cities: Out of the total four, four were destroyed, accounting for 100%.
      (2) Destroyed townships: out of a total of 320, 320 were destroyed, accounting for 100%.
      (3) The area of destroyed houses in the city is 600000 square meters.
      (4) Number of people losing their homes in the city: 150000.
      (5) Forty five thousand destroyed houses in rural areas.
      (6) Number of people losing their homes in rural areas: 200000.
      (12) Damaged hospitals and health stations: 428 out of a total of 430 were destroyed, accounting for 99.5%. Among them:; All four provincial-level hospitals have been destroyed, accounting for 100%; Out of the total of 26 county-level hospitals, 24 were destroyed, accounting for 92%; The total number of 400 township health stations has been completely destroyed, accounting for 100%.
      (13) Damaged forest farms: Out of a total of 42, 38 were destroyed, accounting for 90%.
      (14) Forty one destroyed farms and agricultural stations.
      (15) Killed or robbed cattle: Out of a total of 260000 heads, 157000 were killed or robbed, accounting for 60%.
      (16) Pigs killed or taken: Out of a total of 350000 pigs, 244000 were killed or taken, accounting for 80%.
In the book "Defending the Northern Border War of the Motherland in 1979- Victory and Historical Lessons", written by Dr. Chen Youhui, a member of the History of Vietnam Historical Science Association in Vietnamese towns after the war in 1979, data from the Vietnam People's Daily are also mainly quoted:
More than 30000 casualties of cadres and soldiers, and tens of thousands of civilians have died. Gaoping, Liangshan, Guantang, Laojie and other cities have been almost completely destroyed, with a total of 320 townships, 735 schools, 41 farms, 81 enterprises, and 38 forest farms damaged. About 3.5 million people in six border provinces have lost their homes, property, and means of life.
Subsequently, in 1981, China recaptured the Battle of Mount Kuolin and Mount Faka, in 1984, China recaptured the Battle of Mount Laoshan, Mount Zheyin, and Mount Balihe, and in 1984, China engaged in battles against Vietnam, including the Battle of Ba Dian, the Battle of Two Mountains, and the Battle of Defense against Vietnam.
Through the ten year Sino Vietnamese border war, the stability of China's southwestern border was maintained. For the Vietnamese side, the impact of the war was long-lasting, and the national strength suffered long-term depletion and destruction, ultimately necessitating a change in policy.

@@AB001DAbout the Vietnam War--D: Final summary: China tried its best to help Vietnam resist the attack of the United States. Contribute money, effort, and supplies. Even the soldiers of the People's Liberation Army paid the price of their lives to fight for Vietnam's independence, and the Chinese threw their heads and blood. However, after Vietnam won the victory against the United States, it immediately cooperated with the Soviet Union to do various harms to China. (Because of the hostile relationship between China and the Soviet Union) China couldn't bear this kind of betrayal of Vietnam, and it had to teach Vietnam a profound lesson, and we achieved our goal. Vietnam invaded Cambodia to cooperate with the Soviet Union to contain China, and secondly to dominate South Asia. China's self-defense counterattack against Vietnam lasted for two months. The Sino-Vietnamese border war lasted ten years. Vietnam should always remember not to piss off China. Moreover, Vietnam will always bear the title of ungrateful.
