Do you have a type of chord voicing you use most?
    Content:
    0:00 Intro
0:10 It's more than just the Chords
0:28 Be flexible with what you already use
    0:58 #1 Basic Shell-voicings
    1:37 #2 Shells without a root
1:54 Adding more options for melody notes
2:08 #3 More options for the Autumn Leaves Chords
2:36 Be Practical - It is not an exact science
    3:26 #4 Comping Example
3:48 From two notes to triad based voicings
    4:01 Expanding into Drop2 voicings
4:08 #5 More Melody options for each chord
6:13 #6 Comping Example using melodies across 3 strings

I like this approach. I know those shell voicings quite well, but I've never worked that much on expanding them. One thing that I've been looking at lately is the book about Lenny Breau's actual music (Visions) and he uses those voices but on the next lower (in pitch) set of strings. It feels a little odd, but it expands the pallete even further. Thanks for all your good stuff!

Hello jens! In one of your lessons on exercises on songs you mentioned playing a solo only in one position! When comping I was trying to do the same thing but because I only use drop 2 voicings on the last 4 strings , nothing much happened in terms of melody. In this lesson you helped me figure out how to keep the melody of my comping interesting without having to move a lot on the neck! Thanks!

    Hi Jens,
In order to choose which melody notes to play over each shell chord, are you visualizing a 'scale box' on top of each chord or maybe a wider scale pattern in the background as a safeguard in the same time?
    Thanks!

    • @JensLarsen
      @JensLarsen  4 года назад

I am not really thinking about it like that, but that would be fine as a way to have that overview. As long as you know what notes are in your scale pattern :)

@@JensLarsen Yes! My problem being i can hear what would sound good but i don't always know where that good note is for sure (and one fret too many can sound horrible...)

Such a great lesson, thank you Jens! I tried starting Aimee Nolte's Tune a Week workout (another RUclips video), but was running out of comping ideas. This looks like it will be great help, and will help make a solid foundation.
Question: I understand the shell voicings for straight M7, 7, and m7. Do you suggest different shells for things like 6ths, 9ths, m7b5, etc., or should I just stick with the 3rds and the 7ths? Some tunes appear to almost require the extra notes for the melody.
ps - these videos are amazingly sharp. I was looking at some older material, and these are very crisp and succinct. In addition to the awesome content, your presentation is super sharp, and much appreciated. I _especially_ like that they give solid content with a minimum of preamble or self-promotion -- the quality really shines though. Thanks and regards! jz

In addition to creating ascending lines, another dimension might be to create desending lines. For example, in the video of the Cm7, line was ascending through the scale tones from the Eb. Another possibility is to descend from the Bb. Although, this tends be a little darker sounding with the additional chord tones being in a lower register.
