Great breakdown on Squirrel, thx! I always felt he was hurt as much as anyone by the shift ban, but your focus on the sweet spot stat (say that three times fast) makes sense to me. Also sounds like something he can address with his swing, somebody below noted he's a gamer, gotta love having players like that. Hoskins? Woulda been nice having him on the roster when we have to watch Pete leaving with his bag (hopefully not in July).
wasn't really a injury that wrecked David Wrights career it was maybe a disease or more accurately a medical condition ..suffering from the same spinal problems I think it was amazing doing as well as he did ... anytime there is a discussion about Mets and Hall of Fame it should be mentioned that the best defensive first baseman EVER and one of the best clutch hitting team leaders of his time if not all time Keith Hernández not being there is bullshit..I hope that he and us that lived through and seen everyday how great he was live long enough to see this farce corrected
Hernandez overall numbers just aren’t great enough for the hall; if you include him than there are a lot that would need be in there. Hernandez was good but not hall of fame worthy

Yes, was thinking this as well. One has to wonder if ths is altering his swing. They rushed to extend McNeil's contract out to like age 34-35, but not for Pete. Doesn't make sense. Glad Eppler is gone.
2022 and 2023 were only 16 hits less; so it is not crazy to think he could not .300 for the year. Problem is he is mostly a singles hitter so he should either be batting 2nd or 9th as get his singles.
Jeff McNeil suffers from what I call The HOJO syndrome.. Good season numbers every other year… Howard Johnson was like that.. one year 30/30 guy then numbers slumped the following year then a 30/30 guy again.. etc. if true to form McNeil should have a good year in 2024..
Not sure that McNeil is going benefit that much from him as Jeff is a slap non power hitter. The new defense non shift means a lot more balls that 2-3 years ago were getting through don’t.
I continuously say that Jeff McNeil loves golf so much that he has incorporated his golf swing to the batters box..... and its killing him. Yes....hes good at using his bat as a pitching wedge.....but it destroys his power and without the shift hes now got to be much more accurate in finding holes. Give up the pitching wedge.... Jeff!!! Theres time for golf after the game!!!!
@@explosivediarrhea4671 I think he just needs to stop approaching hitting like hes golfing. Hes not bad at it but he doesn't have the power he had before he started directing chipshots over the infield and the change in shift rules means smaller gaps to chip his wedge. I can appreciate his defensive flexibility......i think he has plenty of talent.....but i think he has fallen in love with his pitching wedge to a fault and i honestly don't know if he can change his approach because hes used that wedge far too long now.
McNeil is a head case. You can see him yelling at himself out loud every time he makes an out. He cracks under pressure. He is very flexible and can hit for average, but we don't need a 10-5 million player that is a super utility player.
you are right when he's is doing well, so are the Mets, his 1st (3) seasons thought we had Wade Boggs or something, amazing, then those 2 not so good years sandwiched by a batting title, make you scratch your game, or did Manfred change the game so much the Mets couldn't win? And how is it the Mets took til he was AGE 26, not 16-17 or even 20-21 to identify his skills, were it not for an injury, JM would still be playing for our AA teams.
He is entering his age 32 season will be that age in April. What if the shift and the age got just a little bit more of a drag in his swing. Be curious at his 2022 season how many of those hits would have been ours now with the non shift.
I predict 4 maybe 5 players that will have really good season 1 pete Alonzo 2 Jeff McNeil 3 Francisco Alvarez 4 Francisco lindor 5 starling marte This year the mets will shock alot of people and they will go to the playoffs
Most all impact roomie season players like Alvarez have a tougher second year slump; Marte injuries have slowed him and his game way down. The Mets line up has too many holes; there are too many questions with the starting rotation and the bullpen. I think the days you get the offense the pitching won’t be there and the days you get the pitching the rotation won’t be there. It’s fine to have hope but to date the Mets haven’t done much to improve this team from 2023 second half to now. To lead you to believe they are a better team. I predict the Mets season is over by end of may and they listen to offers on many players. First two month schedule is just too crazy hard too many really good teams the Mets have to face
Perhaps the time leading up to and after the birth of his first child shifted the dynamics of his performance. Big change to his, and his wife's personal life. He is human. As much as anyone tries, home life can affect work life. Just saying. 🤷♀️
Therein lies the problem, reminded me of the WS championships Bochy won for SF Giants only on even years, but not odd. To me it goes to - does this guy fit? There are a lot of positives regarding Jeff McNeil on the Mets he is versatile and adaptable, but is he the right all-around fit for the Mets? Or is there a future unknown Met within the system or outside of it, who can do a better job in taking his place as he ages. He is home-grown, but such a late, late bloomer.
Well you would think that if the Mets fall out of the race for post season this year that you allow some rookies to get at bats and maybe Jeff becomes a utility type player and not a everyday player. Baseball in general right now loves the baseball players who hit for more power
I think Jeff McNeil tries so hard to not strike out, that when he gets 2 strikes he just tries to put the ball in play sometimes and that leads to pop ups and grounders . And? it always felt great to hit that line drive right over 2nd base or even a homer to dead center . As far as David Wright goes, I think he got injured his back in that damned home run derby .I don't remember the year but he was blasting homers until the final round and he hit 3. Maybe Eppler's oversized ego had something to do with that. Maybe Eppler dictated roster moves to Buck that ultimately resulted in what we saw last year. A complete 180 from the previous year in philosophy, in-game decisions and management.
