I have become a SEVERE minimalist. You tubers and others make you believe you need the latest and greatest new gear. I'm about to turn 60 and realized I never needed 7/8's of the stuff that is hustled on people. I carry a small light clip, an on3 edc or my Bowman og Clovis. My bic lighter with a lighter bro attached, a nalgene canteen and Sawyer wf and a poncho. If I can't make S*** happen with all that, then I'm straight up good with the man upstairs. EDC: I no longer carry some of the basic girl gear: comb, mirror, lip gloss. I replaced those things with hair ties, small fire starter and guitar pick as tinder, Carmex.
One of the best for me? Fence Pliers. Its a hanmer Its a wedge/awl(that can even be used for digging small holes in soils like a hoe Its a couple of different types of pliers. A wire cutter A wire twister.
I love the first 2 mins of this video where you talk aboout now that you have everything dialed in changes happen really slow. that resonated with me, ive been using the same stuff for over a decade now and the only reason i swap things out is if they break or i find something lighter in weight that offers modern performance but it takes me a long time test and choose. great video
Ditched my sawyer(mine and my nephews both failed) for a Katadyn Befree .6L, I usually only carry one bottle now and use the befree as my extra bottle.
As I have become much older, simple and lightweight is everything! I find myself setting stuff aside even though I tell myself I must carry it. I finally settled for a nice outside the waist Lea the holster for my band Ruger LCP II with a couple of mags in my front pocket or a S&W 442 the same way. My John Rambo days are long gone!😂😂😂 The same with knives and flashlights for my everyday carry. Luckily we live in a time where light weight gear is available to us all. I have several boxes of items like you do of stuff I use to carry. They are all good kit, but way too bulky or heavy. Many of the items you showed in this video, I own and have used. I found that the Swiss Army knife with the loose blade you showed sucked at piercing anything. Great knife though, but I find I use the point of a knife more than I thought. I really like the pack you now carry, but it cost too much for my budget right now, or I would give it a go! I have a stack of backpacks and haversacks in my closet right now!😂
haven't carried axe in 30yrs. i always use my british army issue bush knife. otherwise known as the MOD knife. can cut small trees down with it, baton wood. prepped squirrels for cooking with it. if you put small bearing in handle it works as bearing block for bow drill set. loads of uses.
I used to carry a Solo Stove lite or the Chinese knockoff and also a Trangia but not anymore. it took a lot of space and heavy. I don't carry any cooking gears. What I use now is a pathfinder military cooking kit. For just boiling water to reconstitute mountain house meals or MRE's, carrying all that gear is totally nuts. I am a bad cook that even the bears refuse to eat my cooking. 🙂 With the pathfinder canteen kit, you get a stove, a canteen cup and a canteen water bottle that follows you everywhere. You don't need anything else. Thanks
I did basically same things as you i ditched hatchet for the smallest bush craft silky saw, but of course kept my fixed blade. I do still keep the lifestraw, and water purification tablets in my water kit, but my main water container is a steel single wall nalgene bottle with wide mouth which is easy to scoop water and use the straw in. The water bottle is heavy but i dont ever have to worry about it breaking and i can boil water in it as backup. Maybe ill look into the sawyer mini filter though.
No longer carry 1. Mountain house reason: low calories per pouch moved to Peak Refuel 800-1000 a bag vs. under 500 2. A map, I used ON X much better and I only turn it on when I need it. 3. Cheap packs, I now where a fitted Eberlestock makes 30-lbs feel like 10. 4. Space blankets they are far less warm than what people want to make them out to be and they easily tear when shifting in sleep making heat entrapment even worse. They might make a decent table cloth or ground cover for pulling everything out of the pack. 5. Crapload of ammo for pistol and rifle. Couple mags plus another box or two of 50 in the pack, found that ammo rattles and I want a silent pack. 6. Hard plastic water bottles I now use mass produce 12 oz water, only time water is silent is when the bottle is full or 100% empty then I can crumple them up to small size then blow them out to original size.
I'm old school, so I will always carry a good sheath knife, small folding saw, and a tomahawk. You never know. Better to have it and not need it, then the other way around. I still prefer a external frame pack. They have great air flow.

Best thing I’ve done is eliminate almost all the stuff sacks my gear came in to shed weight. You’d be surprised how much useless weight these sacks have when you add them all up
if you can't solve your problem, or at least, get to cover, with 7 shots, you'll never make it anyway. So the spare mag can go in an ankle pouch, with your other cards and the AA light. Put the gun in a velcroed-in kydex front pants pocket.. Have the option of velco or buttons to seal shut the pocket if you have to low crawl. Comfortable, CONCEALED, out of the way of the rifle (slung or not) and the pack harness. It's super fast to draw (starting hand in pocket). and out of the elements. In your other front pocket, have a money clip, currency, ID and your main credit card. No wallet, cause the pistol looks like a wallet-bulge.
This is probably going to sound funny, but I've been wanting to get into some solo camping and know I'm gonna be a little spooked being out there in a dark bush alone. I've heard some interesting stories. With all your time out there in the bush have you encountered any odd things? Possibly paranormal?
Better carry an axe or a hatchet. For "DEFENCE" if you dont carry. better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. But, to each his own.

Not because it isnt important but its only useful if you have followup prepared or available. I dp carry things like gauze and bandages but everything else is a bandaid solution that requires professional help

I have never carried and actual tourniquet (not even in my pack), but rely on being able to improvise one if needed, from a belt, scarf, etc, etc.

If I’m going out to build something I bring an ax. My pocket edc is the leatherman skeletool. I always have a fixed blade knife within reach.
