Prop stick tip was worth watching to the end! Disabled female pepper here so I'll use a little already made container for my cotton balls, but the PROP STICK idea is golden.
This takes me back to the Tom Hanks movie Castaway and how hard he had to work to just make fire. Then towards the end of the movie after being rescued him picking up a simple Bic lighter and igniting it was a powerful scene. I had sort of the same experience living off the grid for over a year after losing our home during the housing crash. I had to truck water up a steep grade in gallon containers from a creek on a sled in the snow too the camper then pump the water into the camper so we could take showers .cook etc. Finally I got to go visit my parents states a way and upon turning on the faucet and watching water coming out of it was mind blowing because I knew how hard I had to work just have water at the camper. I will never forget that.
@VintageGearMan We moved into a place that had running water, but it was well water and extremely dirty and undrinkable. When we got hooked up to city water, to this day, I say it's one of the biggest miracles I've experienced. I didn't think it would ever happen. When we live without modern conveniences, and then they come back, we have a whole new appreciation for them. That's a fact.
So many people went through what you had to, losing your home, having to live with friends, family, living in their car, all because the banks wouldn’t work with you for a few months. I would like to see the bankers and their families endure the same and see if they would be more compassionate. Hats off to you for surviving. God bless.
I lived the same way for ten years here in the north east. What it taught me is to appreciate just what it takes for one to survive and to realize that modern conveniences are just that a conveyance. Living that way makes you appreciate the cost of your life to yourself and the environment.
I’m a DIY’er for sure. I didn’t test this out (it was for a back up emergency kit) so I don’t know how long it pre-burns for a fire, but this is what I made. I used the paper egg carton, cup parts, put in a little dryer lint into each one and poured a little melted wax on it. You can stack them individually with a rubber band on it to make it smaller to pack - but it’s still not the smallest. My dad always made a fire every evening in Kentucky once he retired. A fire always reminds me of great memories.
I make firestarters but I'm told they're too pretty to burn lol They're for froo froo fires 😂 I intend to make some more utilitarian ones. Thanks for teaching me so much! ❤
I've got to brag and say that I do make the best most compact Bic and Mini Bic covers out there too. They don't take up any extra room in you pocket and keep the button from being depressed and losing all of the butane. Usually a Mini Bic would last close to a year maybe. I'm over 2 years in on this one and still have plenty of fuel. Another MarkGyver Creation. If you want one you got it.
I like the Shot container... I'll be using that. I keep a lighter in my pack or pocket, but a small ferro rod is always on my person (usually the necklace) because I know it'll never fail. Nice video.
i've made a lot of cotton balls and vaseline. but i like the make up pads. i put a little lighter fluid on them, then dip them in melted wax. to use just break one open, fluff it a little, hit it with a bic, ferro rod or matches. they burn for a few minutes, long enough to get the fire going. i use old candles, and usually have some kind of lighter fluid, get the pads from the dollar store.
I’ve made similar ones out of paper egg carton cups (the part the egg sits in) put a little dryer lint in each cup, and drizzle a little melted wax on it. You can tear each cup off as you need to use it. Your idea seems similar and wouldn’t take up as much room, lol, great idea using the make up pads:-) I guess I’m a DYI’er as well:-)
That's very elegant and nice to display to friends. But I just keep my Vaseline soaked cotton balls in a ZipLok baggie, and all is good. Yes, I *DO* use them for starting my woodstove. A spare baggie in my EDC bag. Thanks for the video!
3:41 , the different "payloads" you can send . My personal opinion is that a shotgun is the most versatile firearm available. In an apocalypse scenario, I would prefer a shotgun , because of the wide range of functionality , depending on the shell you load.
DIY and BUY. I buy where it makes sense and the price is right and when I know I can make it, I do so. I just recently made a tarp out of a king sized bed sheet, some wax and mineral oil. Sewed on the tie out loops on each side and across the middle and it turned out great.
As an Explorer scout in northern Colorado late 1970's. We premade fire starters from powder and acetone, and addtionally all of us carried 2 or more 12 ga shells in our packs.. I can't tell you any of the details but , we have been known to go backpacking deep deep into the rocky mountains during extreme winter for 3 weeks or more.
Absolutely agree, thee ol 12G is the most versatile firearm if you think of all the different types of rounds they make fkr them there isn't a whole lot you can't do with a good scattergun...
I like to make my own fire starters. I make the wafer type by soaking the cotton make-up remover pads in lighter fluid and then coating them in paraffin wax. I keep them in metal tins in my pack along with a ferro rod and high carbon striker. I started with the cotton balls though, decades ago when I was a Boy Scout. Kept those in a pill bottle, with a paper clip bent at the end to get them out. And its pronounce DEE-ZEL in our neck of the woods.
When I was a young teen. Took a shell and cut it down to just the brass and took a screwdriver or something and a hammer to the primer face down on a desk. Not smart. Thankfully I’m a lucky guy.
That's a nice little container but I just use an Altoids tin and a rubber band. Holds 15-20 cotton balls no problem and can even house a mini Bic lighter too. Easy.
In preparing a fire, Abraham Lincoln 's words come to mind: "If given 4 hours to chop down a tree, i'd spend 3 hours sharpening my axe." (A variation of the 7P Principle ). ☆
I’ve been DIYing/repurposing my gear since childhood (‘50s). But I’m interested in your boots. Brand/model? Btw your channel is the most realistic of the bushcraft/survival/prepper channels on YT.
LOL, before plastic shells we had paper shells impregnated with wax and all we had to do is slit them from the top to the brass a few times and bingo, you had a hell of a hand warmer when lit. they would burn a long time and very well. we didn't like it when the plastic came out and would hoard the used paper shells.
Great video 👍🏼👍🏼 Hey Jason, have you made a tonteldoos yet? They’re easy and fun to make. Anyone who uses flint and steel should have one. I make mine with lampwick instead of cotton, and I’ll store jute twine in the bottom (for obvious purpose)
You should drop your stuff and post more about them people in the flood I live in illinois I'm hurt can't do shit but saw your post about the flooded people we don't see that if you have time post more about them God bless
A 1' x 1' foam pad can be a good sit pad. With a square hole on two opposing edges for a waist strap, It can be carried attached to a belt. Use your imagination, it'll keep the butt end dry!
Had to laugh at your 'old' petroleum jelly. I am still using a one pound tin that my Grandmother bought for when she was babysitting me and my sisters ..... in the early 1950s. it is as good today as the day she bought it.
That's cool what you made but the only thing having a fire that big and that close to all them lives it's not like you have a garden hose next to you to be able to put out the fire fast axsadnts happen all the time. It be better if you clean a bigger area and have at least a XXL fire blanket with you so you can put it over the fire and put it out
your like a bushcraft/survival ryan reynolds lol ... i myself also do bushcraft and teach my kid survival when i can get him out of the house lol but i gotta say i do prefer a good quality Ferro rod over a lighter... just dont fully trust a lighter in the wild when u NEED something 100% that wont let u down
Hope those shotgun shells didn’t come out of your recycling barrel because they are not recyclable with the metal and plastic attached to each other. That’s wish recycling.
For me shotgun shooting is therapeutic. Rifles is scientific. Pistol is more adrenaline based. Since I started training, just plinking has lost its thrill
30 min video to say soak cotton in vaseline stick in hollowed out shotgun shell. Thought you were gonna create a one stop device incorporating the SG shell so that the tender/fuel and ignition source were all one thing. Grab an empty altoid tin and put 10X cotton fire starters in and it is water proof. No crafting needed. Title was a bit misleading. Wanted leave a comment not a thumbs down b/c I like your other videos.

The shotty is just so all purpose. I've done the straw fire starter, but the easiest is the duct tape and tire innertube on the lighter.

No need for a loop inside the shell. Coulda tied a not at bottom and saved room inside.
I’ve tried that. Didn’t work as well for me.
Gotta get me a vise
How long will the cotton balls keep before they wick the Vaseline into the center, or is that even a problem?
