Tony Sirico on the otherhand (Paulie), I think it's because he was a legit 'mob hand,' just a regular guy who probably never once in his life thought he'd be an actor until way down the line; he was arrested on drug and weapons charges before, and was clearly acting as muscle for the Mafia, on some level, after his time in the Army (where he also became an amateur pro boxer). There's an old interview with him on here from the 90s, he talks about his past a bit but specifically about the time he was driven to murder over this broad that he fell in love with and even left his own wife for, I can't remember all the details but either some guy was hitting on her or he did something to her so he just went off on this guy, and he all but admits that he killed him. But the “gay mobster storyline” was a real thing that happened in Jersey with the DeCavalcante Crime Family and David Chase used that to write Vito storyline
Let me tell you something. Nowadays everybody's got to make a drama on internet, and write huge wall text of a posts on all their socials, and make exposés on each other on RUclips that conveniently go beyond 10 minutes even if most of the video is just empty and a waste of time. Whatever happened to telephone tough guy? The strong, silent type; that was a true tech connoisseur. He wasn’t in touch with his target audience , he just gave the most abominable slurs and curses and threw the phone away. So what they didn’t know, once they got Telephone Tough Guy in touch with his feelings, that they wouldn’t be able to make everything about his brand! And then it’s ‘(Insert Twitter drama)is huge, '(Insert Twitter Microcelebrity) situation is horrible, (Insert trivial internet drama) vaffanculo!’

I ran into Mr. Gannascoli in the smoking lounge at the Las Vegas in March. We were both trying to get our last smoke in before our planes left. I call him Gino from the bakery though. He laughed a bit at that. And that was it. Seemed ok to me.
Scharipa was the worst part of the talking Sopranos podcast. Imperioli was a good host but Steve would constantly interrupt and talk over everyone. It was difficult to get though some of the episodes it was so annoying
Very much this. I watched maybe the first 2 episodes then had to quit. It was unbearable. I would rather Imperioli and maybe one of the other younger cast members.
He’d make the worst takes like saying Tony lived at the end and if he didn’t find a convo interesting he’d just interrupt and say it wasn’t important. Very tough guy to get along with it seems.
Gannascoli seems like a moderately weird guy. Schirripa is an obviously petty prick and full of shit. There's enough weirdness around Gannascoli that people will find something to judge but it's obvious to me who the bad guy is here.
@@shanemac1646 i just meant the stuff from the previous video, the minor weird stories people have about him being pushy about merch and stuff. we don't know that stuff is true, so that's why i said "seems."
On one hand, I also thought Vito's Maine adventure storyline went on too long. On the other hand, I thought Eugene's whole arc being done in one episode was really well done.
Eugene and Vito should have just ended in one episode and held hands as they off'd themselves, walking into the ocean just like in the movie "the boy." You ever seen that, how the old couple off's themselves by walking into the ocean holding hands? it is so stupid.
hard to blame the guy for trying to further his own career, he got a lot of airtime over the vito storyline .. unfortunately he was never able to parlay this into any concrete showbusiness endeavor
A lot of the cast isn’t really known for much more than the show. The larger actors were pretty famous before the Sopranos (aka the bunch from Goodfellas, etc).
Baccala seemed like a jerk too. Tried listening to the pod he did with Christopher but he just talked over him the whole time. Guests too. Insufferable
I was a feature extra in "To Kill the Irishman" as a 1960's Hells Angel who gets into a fight with Shirripa and the Irishman's gang. It was a complete rip off of the biker bar brawl scene in "Bronx Tale." But anyway, Steve grabbed my leather's collar to pull me INTO the camera's shot. He was doing this guy who was just starting in movies a favor. The point is, that was a very cool move by Schirrpa. It got me my SAG card!
I would love for u to do a deep dive into the Meadow character (Jamie Lynn Seigler). Also, the real-life relationship with Gandolfini when she confided to him about her having MS. I have read Jim was FIERCELY protective of her (I also have MS). An MS diagnosis can destroy a career in acting (see Christina Applegate and Selma Blair).
Met a guy at a bar a few months ago who said he met Gannascoli at a convention, allegedly he was talking trash on the other actors and how he never got paid as much as them or something to that effect. I don't remember too many pertinent details seeing as I was at a bar and had a few drinks but I do remember the guy saying how he got a weird vibe from him, apparently this is a common occurrence.
I was chef at a french restaurant in Brooklyn that was next door to Soup as Art restaurant. Every thursday a cast member would come to promote the restaurant. I got to meet lot of the cast which was a blessing.
I tried to watch the Michael Imperioli Steve Schirripa podcast. But I found Steve to be surprisingly insufferable. Not at all like his character on the show. He was obnoxious and I bailed.
It looks to me like Gannascoli's biggest sin in all this is...he isn't as rich as the other cast members, and has to kind of hustle for money in a way the others would not. "Grandstanding" or selling stuff out of the trunk...okay. Not admirable, but let's call it a forgivable sin. And as the video makes clear, some of the allegations are plenty suspect. Feuding with Schirripa over attention or whatever...that's Hollywood! Just part of that world. You need that kind of ego to show up to audition after audition and be told you're not the guy, and you walk out of there convincing yourself that the people you desperately wanted to work for were wrong, and that next time it's going to happen for you. Without that kind of ego, you can't make it in show biz...and then when you put guys like that together in a room, sometimes they clash. It doesn't mean much in the end compared to being big parts of what some say is the greatest TV show of all time. I hope they mend fences.
I've meet Joseph at a Italian restaurant called Vincent's in Carle Place on long Island NY. He had a table selling off pictures of him and selling of pictures of him and whoever stand next to him. He was pleasant and not really pushy about asking for money when I approached him and asked him questions about the show. This was about eight year ago. But more recently my good friend seeing him all the time in Oceanside NY sitting in his car doing scratch offs
Yup. He used to be around Vincent's all of the time back in the day. Oceanside too, I believe he lives there or at least used to. Not sure if he still is-does, moved out of Nassau a few years ago. Bumped into him a few times myself, seemed a little off, but totally harmless.
I'll tell you all something right now and I am not ashamed to say it: my estimation of Joseph Gannascoli as a bus tour chaser and peddler of cheap crudely made pictures out of the back of his car just fucking plummeted!! I mean, if he wanted to chase tour bus every time, be rude to people, send creepy messages on Instagram, be impolite to the fans and make a point that he's into broads - he should've done so quietly. He should've pursued that lifestyle quietly and not attracting any attention!!
This one girl who was cyber stalking me managed to meet her. She told me that she and him spoke, she told him how I liked sopranos and exaggerated that I was a huge fan of Vito just so she can get the most from him for me, (which I even told her was a good call and appreciated it) but when she said that he started to hit on her I was like "Really? Cool!" She expected me to I guess defend her honor, but it's Vito. I love all the cast. Vito being a bit of a scuzz ball makes me feel like Joseph is just more closer to his character which I love. Ultimately, she said that he was a very nice guy, just a bit too strong and eager when it came to opportunities, but who wouldn't?
During the Schirripa and Imperioli podcast run, fans were telling Steve to STFU and let Michael talk. Always cutting him off. I had no problem with Gannascoli. Man's got to eat. Self-promotion, vying for bigger parts? Nothing wrong with that. I think Schirripa was just jealous. Also, Bobby, WTF were you that night? Why was the skip babysitting junior??
Schirripa literally made the show unlistenable for me. I listened to a bunch of episodes, trying really hard to tune him out, but I just couldn't. He derailed every interesting line of thought Imperioli tried to explore and was pathologically incapable of having a serious conversation about anything. Nor was he funny or remotely interesting as a person. It's not just that he had nothing to add to the show, it's that he actively sabotaged it. I was so interested in so many things Imperioli had to say. He was a serious, thoughtful guy who could provide endless interesting thoughts about the artistry of the show in particular and of theater, film, etc. in general. Schirripa would have none of it. Like it pained him allow Imperioli to offer substantive, reflective, thoughtful commentary. It's a real pity too because the show could have been great. God, the man was insufferable.
Some of what you say is true. I also thought Imperioli had the personality of cardboard. I just couldn't get into it with either of them, unless they had a very good guest.
@@kikxxx I mean, I'm not exaggerating, I'm literally reporting a fact: I stopped watching the podcast because at a certain point I just could not stand him. I don't know what else to say. I'm just speaking from my own experience. If you didn't think he was *that* bad, then great! I'm glad you were able to enjoy the show! And like I say, I stopped watching so I can't speak to whether he got better or not; I take your word that he did!
@@babylonian.captivity I called Schirripa out on his lack of personal implication and he insulted me which I reuploaded to my channel because it was hilarious,😂😂 Now, Imperioli is a horrible, no good pretentious leftist, but with all his flaws he is a smart and cultivated dude and his psychological and philosophical takes on the meaning of some of the deepest scenes (specially the dreams) were really worth exploring for a fan like me. UNFORTUNATELY every time something like that would came up, Schirripa would brush it off with a lewd joke or something to that effect and go straight to the next scene. These episodes came out during lockdowns so I really had nothing better to do, but it was extremely frustrating indeed. Schirripa felt genuinely offended when I called him out on his BS so I don't think he was actively trying to sabotage the discussion (as in, bad intentions), it's just that the IQ discrepancy between the two made the dialogue impossible. Sub 100 IQ people like Schirripa literally CAN NOT understand let alone discuss abstract concepts and reasoning. That's just noise to them, and if you try too hard to make them understand or point it out to them they can become violent, so at some point Imperioli just gave up on the scenarios and started making lewd jokes too. Sad !

Watching Chase's terribly misdirected Saints of Newark and seeing lots of his co-stars being either pretentious douches or simply assholes, I'm more and more convinced that James was the glue holding the show together
This is a feud between two actors that would get minimal roles in theater or TV outside of the Sopranos. They have the ethnicity and accent that made them perfect for the Sopranos, along with so many others. They both did extremely well in their character arcs, and one wonders what the writers or Chase saw in them to give them so much screen time. They both did the best with the acting skills, and it was obvious to both of them after their on-screen deaths that they would never amount to anything in their future acting careers. The Sopranos gave the opportunities to so many who would only play stereotypical Italian-American tough guys and let them flesh out their characters. Coming down from a series like the Sopranos and maybe their own insecurities as bona fide actors, it’s only natural that these men would be so bitter. Still, kudos on doing an amazing job. Your roles were unforgettable parts on the best series I have ever seen.
I hated Vito the most on the show and being homosexual wasn’t the main reason I disliked him. Him shooting that innocent civilian on the side of the road and always kissing ass to Tony. Plus he was so sloppy and fat.
I was at HBO, covering Sopranos for the entire production run - Joe was the one cast member who used to call me for advances on his payment for upcoming episodes. He'd say "Yo! It's Joe Gannascoli buddy, hey listen, I'm gonna be in episode _____, and I could really use an advance on my payment!" - and I'd have to call the line producer and ask of he really was in the episode and then I'd get finance to cut the payment to him. I got the sense that he was pretty desperate for $. Another cast member bought a race horse & I remember thinking "You may not get a lot more work, you're kinda type-cast, you should probably go with safer investment..." but you can't say it.
@@AshleySpeaks09 - Lorraine was a little high maintenance from my perspective, but she & my boss were friends, so things went fairly ok. Edie was an absolute professional: showed up on time, knew her lines, ready to go - and no drama from what I recall.
awhile ago there was a news report of a book coming out from a HBO employee that goes into lengths about gandalfini's coke habit. i have seen in interviews the cast saying he was a great guy and paid them out of his pocket, then I seen the execs say he only did that because he would be missing for two weeks on a bender and they would have to shut production until he came back to work
I met gandolfini in 2007 just as the sopranos was concluding filming. I didn't find him to be nice at all. I think he just hated all the attention but it came off as being very nasty to his fans.

Gannascoli and Schrripa are like two guys still fighting each other at the fire exit, while everyone has already left the building that is just about to collapse.
It seems like Gannascoli just hit gold and found a show that can pay for the rest of his life and he got lazy and just wanted to juice that. After gandolfini died i’m guessing he didn’t want to profit off of his death, i don’t think anyone really wants to do that, he just got carried away. Schrippa probably saw him getting carried away and figured it was like every other time he grifted and assumed the worst. I don’t think either are awful people just two flawed humans with misunderstandings.
Gannascoli did nothing wrong. Gannascoli proposed a great story idea and the writers went with it. I doubt Scrippa would have wanted his character gay to get the screentime, so he just needs to get over it at this point. The arguing over who really knew James Gandolfini was lame - obviously Gannascoli shared a lot of scenes with the guy so probably did feel crushed by the death.
I thought Steve and Michael were both hilarious ... I've listened to every episode 50 times (I''m in the car all day long). Steve's blow ups were especially entertaining. Almost drove off the road laughing many times ... I love them all don't care what grudges they have against each other.
What about that house that pitched itself to the writers as Phil Leotardo's twin brother? "Housey" Leotardo was a great character, they should have done more with him.
Lol, glad you called out Feech; in the original weekly watch, he was made to be a major obstacle to be dealt with. In the binge, it's mainly one episode, and he's out 1/3rd of the way into the season.
It wasn’t Joe selling script leaks. Federico- the actor who played Furio- either accidentally or intentionally- revealed news that Tony and Carmella would be getting a divorce in season 4 to a TV journalist and that contributed to Chase writing him off the show by the end of the season. Even tho they were already planning for Furio to leave, initially the way he left was different than what actually happened. Hence Furios dismissal being so abrupt.
I worked with Steve and Michael at an autograph signing. I worked as someone who directed people and took photos of them It was about 3 hrs. I'll put it like this...they are serious when it comes to their time, pay, and putting on a good event. They were great! They were very nice, shook hands, told jokes, took time to talk with fans and they were very good to my team working that day. I appreciated their professionalism. Michael was a bit more reserved, Steve was the funny guy and they were very authentic. Wish all the people we worked with were as great as Steve and Michael.
Does anyone remember the episode when Vito breaks Adriana’s chair? There’s a clip on RUclips where it doesn’t look planned (on Vito’s part lol) at all, & Ralphie, Patsy, the other guys in the scene are laughing & immediately drop their Jersey accents before Patsy walks over to help him up, but Vito stays in character, & they obviously kept that scene in, but now it really makes me wonder if he wasn’t too well liked long before S6, just based off the reaction. Might have just been an accident / coincidence, but it definitely didn’t look like it was in the script.
Damn fine police-work, CineRanter. Damn fine... great research and sleuthing. Respect. (edit: you should probably put "part 2" on this and "part 1" on the first video. other than that great job as always)
you know, it is weird all this bad talking about Steve Schirripa - I lived in the same neighbourhood as him and he was always a nice, stand up guy. He always was cool when we spoke on social media as well. that's my experience.
Who else was really weird? Michael Imperioli is like some kind of spiritual alternative rock guy but that doesn't make him wierd, it's just not what people are expecting based off his character. Actors in real life are more likely to be artistic/creative types who have unusual or niche interests. They're not all average joe working class guys even if that's what they portray.
Good video you changed my mind. I never found any media of Vito saying he was close to Tony either. It was jealousy, like hating on a coworker because he asked for a raise and got it
Worked with him on an independent film he was a cool dude we called him Vito the whole time.. He never spoke about the cast just told stories about the writers and producers.. 4:23 is exactly what he told us out of his own mouth. He said he was simply telling the story next thing he knew they wrote it for him as a jokes on you thing because he initially didn’t wanna play a gay role
The Vito storyline was brilliant no matter how many episodes it lasted, those insisting otherwise are (just going to say, non writers without any awards).
I personally hate Steve. He was stupid and unable to understand Michael's CLEAR analysis of the show and contributed nothing other than talking about who he doesn't like. I thought the Bobby character was annoying in the show too just saying "hey come on" after being the butt of every other joke.
I'm honestly surprised to hear that stuff about Steve. I knew Steve years ago before he was acting. We both worked at the same casino I'm Vegas for a time and I always thought he was a great guy. Funny, super easy to chat with and get along with. I feel like I've been stabbed in the heart!
Yeah I recently rewatched and was surprised by how many storylines I assumed were spread over a few episodes but on rewatching realised the entire storylines were all wrapped up in single episodes
Comedian Otto Peterson (Otto & George) once told a story on Opie and Anthony that Steve Schirripa used to be his booking manager or something for when he did shows in Vegas, and one time Otto was angry that Schirripa booked another puppet act on the same night or weekend or something, and he said Schirripa yelled at him that he would fill the whole hotel with puppets if Otto didn't step off, then they both laughed at the absurdity of the idea. I might be getting some of the details slightly wrong as I haven't listened to the story in a while, but that's the gist of it. And this isn't to throw shade at Schirripa, as it sounds like there was no resentment between him and Otto over it - just that he does seem to be a big personality who doesn't have a problem expressing when he's angry about something, and some people really can't handle that.
They all legends at the end of the day. Look at most art groups like all these older legendary rock bands members who hold grudges to the point they cannot play shows ever again even though everyone wants it. Sopranos had so many awesome characters similar to having a 25 member band. It's obvious they all weren't going to mesh together years later. Much love to them all
When you put it like that now I know why I felt relief when he finally got beat up, I knew it was finally over and we could move on. I think it's pitiful that these people get these great jobs one of the best shows ever made and they fight over time like kids over a toy.
Am I the only one who really liked the Vito story line? Plus with him being outed it allowed the writers to hint that Phil was closeted. I can agree it was a but more drawn out than it needed to be but I still enjoyed it. Plus back then that was pretty groundbreaking.
@@marielollini9958 There was no inclination that Phil was closeted, it was just a funny scene. I would've preferred if Phil lets it slip that maybe his father or uncle might've been gay, and they had him killed for it. And all he could think of was how that ruined his family growing up. And instead of blaming the killing on the mobster's he blamed it on the relative for being gay. "How dare he be gay and get himself killed" kind of victim blaming mentality that he did to Vito's son.
1:33 -- hahahaha, you mean "Gannascoli created *dissent* in the ranks" (which is people disagreeing with each other), not DYSENTERY (which is diarrhea and fever). (Although, maybe his cooking of Johnny Cakes caused dysentery, I dunno...)
You got no right to say these things. It's a reference, in part, to use a line from the show ANYONE would recognize and twist it for comedic humor. Sorry. Not here to explain jokes but I used to be a legal legit debt collector. Ha ha. Right.

Now, Imperioli is a horrible, no good pretentious leftist, but with all his flaws he is a smart and cultivated dude and his psychological and philosophical takes on the meaning of some of the deepest scenes (specially the dreams) were really worth exploring for a fan like me.

The Vito storyline was brilliant no matter how many episodes it lasted, those insisting otherwise are (just going to say, non writers without any awards).
You're trying too hard.
@@AffectedArea how so?
The best was when Michael would read the letters from "A.S." to Steve on the air. Steve's freaking flipped over those letters.

He was on Celebrity Fit Club on VH1 2005.

1:28 The Sopranos podcast with Chrissy and Bobby got us right through Covid. Every Monday here in UK. ❤
I never understood why Adriana wasn’t on the podcast. Michael was on hers.
She highatted Steve
You are right, Otto was a legend. Funny story
He's regretting ghosting you on that interview.
Let's hope for a part 3. 😊

Pretty laughable he was “playing ball”
@@Ditka-89I'm sure he was, he's a real come from behind kinda guy
Maybe you're a flambe
Hint that Phil was closeted--bc he came out the closet to kill Vito?! I thought that gif a sec too but then I thought the actor wouldn’t go for that!
Yeah it was boring
Great follow up video CineRanter, I enjoy all your videos, but especially your Sopranos videos!
I still wanna know why they didnt interview Vincent Curatola in the trainwreck that was the Sopranos podcast.
Ha ha. Right.
@@michaelbernard6220 -- If you're gonna use a Carmine Jnr malapropism, you gotta know WHEN AND HOW to employ it.
You jogged my memory just then, but the narrator used it in such a way that, without any foreshadowing or context, it sounded like a mistake.
Let us all join hands and go down to the lake.
